the way Haseeb sir is explaining the different types of circuits is like the digestive system of the animal. Food in , stool and urine out. In between the two working of other parts of heart liver and kidneys etc.
ordinary machenics like me learning a lot of things from you. without any degree of engineering we feel like we are the one who could do any thing. ..like in repairing and projecting some programing some circuits like fm. .amplifier. .radio frequency etc. ...

Great explanation! I have used capacitors in series before in a tube audio amp and found that unless capacitors are perfectly match one capacitor can have much more voltage than the other. I'm not referring to this project, but in general. My project involved having to use balancing resistors to get the voltages across the capacitors to match. Best regards!

i believe you are right even when you say you increased too much the capacity... i dont tink there will be surge current because you have the NTC before limiting the current and its a low amperage psu so i think we are safe
You can always measure if theres any surge!
thx for one more great explanation never thought 110v worked like that also

The parallel combination is much more useful than the series connection for the following reasons. If you make the capacitor values small enough, but have many, you now can use several SMT capacitor rather than a large thru hole device, which will reduce assembly time. Also, capacitors in parallel, depending on the PCB design (minimizing inductance) and assuming the use of SMT devices, allows a paralleling of capacitor ESR which reduces the overall value. There is one condition in having many parallel capacitors in close proximity, that is of the required airflow around each device for cooling. So, preferred is to have the capacitor bank have only two rows of devices with a small spacing between each (which occurs even if you butt the SMD footprints).

Dear Sir, I take care about the Energy stored and ESR of series or single capacitor used. That defines stability of the system and voltage stress over power transistor.

sir does it working as voltage doubler circuit principle so that it convert 110(155 pp) to 311 voltage by using 2 capacitor s. sir if i m wrong please pardon me.

I am not sure I will agree with the argument of ESR matters here. Given the application of these high voltage capacitor mainly filtering 50 or 60Hz main AC current after rectification, whether the ESR value is important or not is up to debate. I don't think ESR values matter too much here, rather the ripple current rating of these capacitors is important. High capacitance capacitor tends to have higher ripple current rating, so I think two 330uF/200V capacitors connected in series has its advantage as well.
The fundamental question here is why Microsoft designed this 110/120V power supply with two 330uF/200V capacitors, instead of just a single 330uF/200V with a full bridge rectifier configuration. This is a typical voltage doubler circuit, reminded me the old, dual voltage SMPS in many PC power suppliers and home appliances. Without any proof, I only can guess that Microsoft intended to have the same design for both 110v and 220V configuration, with minimal changes during the production process, just few jumper wires and a MOV. If such guess is true, the two 330uF/200V capacitors connected in series, with equivalent of 165uF/400V, is perfectly within the design specification for 220V application for this power supply.

The original circuit, using the two 330uF caps in series, is a classic voltage doubler circuit. Each half period charges one of the two caps only. Then their total voltage/energy is fed to the circuit. If we apply the formula for the energy stored in each capacitor, this will be 3,983 Joules, for 110V mains voltage, making a total of 7,986 Joules of energy offered to the circuit. This means that if we use full wave rectification, but with a line voltage of 220V, according to the same formula, we simply need a single capacitor at the half capacitance of the originals, that is 165uf. This cap will store the exact amount of energy as before (7,986 J). Now, as this value (165uF) is not a standard one, we need to choose the next higher capacitance value, that is 180uF, working this time at 400V of course.
The same modification, but in reverse way, can be done on a European psu, working on 230V, to work on 110V. Simply we instal a voltage doubler at its input, after removing the full wave rectifier, installing now two caps in series, having double capacitance value than that of the single one used originally. The key point in such modifications is the energy storage of the input circuit, which should always be the same (as it was originally designed, before the modification).
This process has nothing to do with parasitic inductances. The primary side capacitors work on low (line) frequency and do not suffer in the way the secondary side caps do.
