  • Not so quick video showing the Pixel Slate vs iPad Pro 2018. The Pixel is a great very capable tablet. So much so that I'm switching over to ChromeOS

    Nice review!! As an i5 Slate owner and Ipad pro owner, it is nice to see a review that doesn't exploit the limitations but rather shows the capabilities of this machine.

      Most of the problems were people's expectations. They love iPads, overlook it's failings and expect all tablets to operate like iPads or they're trash. You get a proper desktop browser that works well with your finger. IPad with IPadOS still doesn't offer this.

    I think Pixel Slate is like 2 years ahead of everything and itself. I mean all the concepts are placed strategically but yet not realised.
    The world is moving towards the Cloud. Thus entire operating system is based on cloud.
    With Crostini, it becomes a great OS for both web devs as well as other devs.
    With Android apps, it has opened a host of services and I could see full desktop class games and other apps coming to Google Play.
    But, you probably shouldn't buy this device now. Why? Because all these concepts are not yet fully baked and not matured at all.
    It would take at least two years when almost every native/desktop based task will be migrated to the cloud. Cloud gaming is coming, I think in at least two years, it could go mainstream. Chrome OS would be the best OS for a cloud based gaming service. Google could also push gaming on Chromebooks and ARM chips are getting better as well.
    Heavy duty video, audio and photo editing has yet to come to mobile devices as well as these services getting entirely moved to the cloud. Google Cloud has paid services which even allows huge studios to design and render Blockbuster quality movies, entirely in the cloud. This could come to professional market pretty soon, after that.
    Android apps are still buggy, it would take at least two years for them to be properly optimized for Chromebooks, given that consumers adopt Chromebooks rapidly.
    Microsoft is coming up with Chrome OS like Windows lite OS. Apple is moving towards one app platform for their entire lineup of devices. These all concepts are nothing new but Chrome OS is strategically placed to gain the most in a cloud and mobile first world.

    Excellent videos thank you for all the information. Only question I have is why not buy a Macbook Air 13 (2018) for $1049 right now at Best Buy or another powerful laptop like the Razer Stealth 13 instead of spending $1,500 for the Slate w/ i7? I am just asking to see if there are any benefits that I am missing because I also love using tablets instead of laptops when possible. I am also in IT so it is important for me to remote into my workstation for more power from anywhere.

    • @flowingcolor
      @flowingcolor  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The benefit is that its that the OS is super optimized it has no Fans.... Its small, I know the Air is small too. But this can handle IT/Photo culling which are my main uses. It tethers automatically via bluetooth to my phone the second I power it on. It just works (for me)

    It's nice to see a review on the slate a couple of months later through updates. The one that got the most critique was the m3 processor version which isn't available to buy anymore. The i5 and i7 versions were much better.

    People keep saying the iPad is faster but the problem is... How does that extra speed and power benefit the end user day to day? If it doesn't, it's a mute point.
    I think what the slate, specifically chrome os, represents is the evolution necessary to make tablets viable laptop replacements.

    • @flowingcolor
      @flowingcolor  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, the CPU/GPU on the iPad are great.... but you cant really use them. The apps are limited, you cant hook up two monitors and run apps on them. I think the lower-end ipads make more sense.

    Spotify is very buggy on ChromeOS (can take ages to load, freezes) in tablet or laptop mode. Facebook looks terrible, it's stuck in a phone shape and won't expand to fill the screen. Wikipedia the text has gaps because it forced into a tablet shape. Yes lots run well, Netflix in particular, but lots don't. I'm a fan of ChromeOS but Android apps still need work. ChromeOS is still best with its original intention: Web Apps.

    Hi, A couple of questions, I’m looking to switch from my iPad Pro 12.9 2017 to the i5 or i7 Slate (mainly due to hard drive access etc). What kind of battery life are you getting with the i5 and i7? Also, is the version of Lightroom for the Slate a Chrome Os version, or the Android version, and how does the version compare to the iPad Pro version. This will be the software I’d use the most. Many thanks for your time. :) Cheers, Shane.

    • @flowingcolor
      @flowingcolor  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Shane, the battery life is a little less than the iPad Pro. Around a full day of work. It uses the Android version of Lightroom but I thinks a special build for the Slate. The iPad Pro graphics engine seems a little faster. But if you need to use peripherals and have more software choices the Slate is great. It replaced my laptops and tablet. What are your main uses?

    • @shaneferguson2856
      @shaneferguson2856 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alberto - thanks for responding so quick. I use my iPad Pro for everything - so the main apps on it that I would need are Google Docs or MS Word, Adobe Lightroom CC mobile, Adobe Photoshop Mix and Fix, Polarr, Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr. I use Affinity Designer and Photo - but can live without them. I use Adobe Lightroom the most - that is the key app. As long as it’s as fast on the Slate than the iPad than it sounds good. I use Pixelrights for my website, I can do most of the layout on the iPad but for a few things I still have to use a device with a full browser right than a ‘mobile’ version. That along with the lack of a full file structure is why I was looking at a device like the Slate. I prefer the tablet form rather than a laptop, and ideally don’t want to go to Windows, I work in IT Support and have enough of Windows in my day job :)
