  • Hi friends, today I have a quick overview of the HIMI twin jelly gouache available in sets of 36 or 48 colors: amzn.to/48tQTOR (affiliate link)
I have gone more in-depth in the past on this gouache, here are the reviews if you want more info on the quality of this paint:
    • Really Great Gouache i...
    • Himi 24 Jelly Gouache ...
Comparing jelly gouache paints: • Comparing and Reviewin...
I like how you get more colors in a smaller footprint with this set vs the standard jelly gouache size cups, The quality of the paint seems the same as previous HIMI sets so if you already have them you know what you are getting. Some colors are more transparent so keep that in mind if you like working on dark paper. Overall its a nice product.

For anyone who's interested in lightfast tests, Sarah Burns did a big gouache light fast testing project of multiple student grade and professional grade gouaches that was really informative and interesting. She also did some mold tests for anyone who's concerned about that issue.

Just a comment about opening the individual gouache cups, I was taught that you leave the lids on, and just peel up a corner to take a small amount out with a palette knife, and set up your colours for the painting, then close the cups, and replace the cover on the case, to keep your paints in good condition. Just an option to try with a new set, for those that wish. That said, looking at all the creamy goodness of all the open cups is so luscious!

I haven't heard that. I think it would take away from the ease of using the set. If you are going to do that I'd just get tubes. Taking off the lid and diving right in is the best part about jelly gouache I think.

Yeah, I haven't ventured into trying jelly cup gouache yet because of their 30 ml size. This 12 ml size seems much more reasonable.

This is definitely a more "hobbyist friendly" size set! As I understand it, the jelly cup sets were originally intended for students who go through a lot of pain much more quickly than your average hobbyist/enthusiast. I'll keep an eye out for this set, if I find it for a good price I'll definitely get it for my doodles & casual painting and save my fancy gouache for when I want to actually make an effort 😅

Tip: If you want to get rid of the staines on the white palette, use the magic eraser with a drop of dawn and olive oil. Mine is bright white again. And again. 😀

Thanks for this. I’ve enjoyed the original himi 24-color set in the larger cups. And purchased the aartex ? 18-color set as a backup and have yet to open it. I hate when they dry out but have found that with those stubborn chunks I press them into watercolor pans so I can enjoy them in a watercolor manner. Yes, they’re more transparent but still fun.
Your reviews are greatly appreciated and I love learning from you. They are always honest and unbiased. I’m looking forward to your “use your best supplies” this year plan. For instance I love the himi gouache but also have Turner, Holbein, Windsor & Newton etc and want to use them too. An embarrassment of riches but we don’t have kids 😂🌺🦩

Hey Lindsay...I just bought the Himi pastel set & 18 regular color set of gelli gouache. Not sure if you've reviewed the pastel set, but I am really happy with it, It's all convenience colors, of course, but a lot of fun to play with. Of course, it's not artist quality and I wouldn't trust what Himi says about lightfast ratings. It's mostly for fun, enrichment & learning. If the art created with it is really special, then there's always the making prints option. I also think that gelli gouache may do some cracking over time, esp if it's applied too thickly. But I don't know. My older set of discontinued Magicfly gelli gouache, although still useable, is showing its age, so I figured I'd get some that's fresh. Thanks! 😊 p.s. the old Magicfly set I have also has the extra foam topper to help with keeping the paint from drying. I think that's a big reason it's been as useable as long as it has. I think I'll get some foam inserts for the Himi sets too.

"Put your Himi Gouache in the bath tub!" -- I can see this becoming the new TikTok sensation. Himi sells 36 tube sets. I buy mine that way now. It's nice to have the open palettes, but I tend to dry them down anyway to other palettes for smaller footprint and less contamination. May as well have tubes. Thanks for the review and for reminding about that lovely painting you did.

Hullo Lindsay, I have to say Designer Gouache is NOT A PERMANENT medium! I have had more gouache paintings thrown away after they were photographed than have ever been hung on a wall! KNOW or LEARN about what pigments are lightfast and only buy those paints that are lightfast! If you do this with ALL of your paints no matter the mediums you are giving your paintings the best chance for success and a longer lasting painting as well!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise with us! Please take, be safe and enjoy your day!

I have the full 30ml Himi gauche and a tube set from Arteza. I'm planning to use gauche instead of acrylic paints in my art journal projects. I really like the matte finish. I can't stand the constant brush washing with acrylic paint. I plan to use up my remaining acrylic paints with the gel plate or the acrylics will dry up, whichever comes first.

I love your painting! I have the old 56-color jelly gouache and they have dried and they are not easy to rewet to get opaque colors 😅 Sure, they are fun to use while they are still not dried up and I got it really cheap in Singapore like USD 24 for 56x 30 ml cups , but I think I would stick with fresh gouache out of tubes in the future, so much easier to use. I just got myself a Holbein 24-color gouache in tubes set from Japan.

bwah my comment was deleted, if I were to guess, because of a link in it. the moment I started the video I was having the dejavu because I remember these paints and more so the drawing especially becasue on instagram, you posted a reference shot you took and it was a huge learning experience of how to take a relatively busy image and turn it much more concise while still keeping the same feel to it as the reference! I was starting to doubt myself, but I was right, its the same one from 3 weeks ago, (was just trying to link the original video you did!)

Great set. I like the color choices, and there aren't too many. I'm not into mixing, so this would work for me, as too many colors of paint tends to fluster me and my process {I have a himi set}; causing overload and discouraging me from painting. {I know it's a me thing, I'm working on it. ☺} Yeah, that's me: a bundle of contradictions. 😁

Oh no wish I bought this format instead of the regular jelly cups. So much better. But on a sustainablity challenge so will live through this video ❤️ true I don’t like the Himis either. It’s not me it’s the Himi 😛, seriously though The few tubes of Holbein and MGraham gouache show me that.

I gave away my large 30ml Himi set that went unopened and unused since 2021. I contemplated getting this smaller one but you mentioned the Holbein gouache tubes so much that the Want Monster won & I got those. Do you let the Holbein dry in a pallet or simply put out a little at a time. Sometimes because of work/mom life I'll go weeks without being able to practice and then I'll do a bunch of your tutorials (TH-cam & Teachable) in a row.

@@thefrugalcrafter Well, they held up a bottle of gum arabic, and said put a drop or two on top of each color, and spread it out with a brush to cover. So they definitely meant gum arabic.
