    The happiest timeline isn't about Jeff leaving the group. My interpretation is that when Abed called Jeff out for his conniving - imposing a system that would only benefit him - Jeff was forced to give up his control over the situation and thus allowing the others to enjoy their goofy selves and him to realise that the whole group (including him) is actually way happier when he takes a step back and starts putting the group as it comes before himself and his own convenience

      I thought it was about Karma. When Jeff decided to do something nice for the group (go get the pizza) - instead of scheming to get someone else to serve him and go get it - everything got better. It was about the whole - love thy neighour. When jeff made a decision that helped others - he went to the higher timeline.

      It's less about Jeff taking control
      It's more just

      Actually making autonomous decisions rather than random happenstance

      Shirley got distracted by Britta's singing and they all starting dancing. Presumably because of that she was too distracted to go get the pies and they burnt. She either blamed herself and didn't get too upset about it, or she was too happy from the dancing and singing that she just didn't care.

      This was the only timeline with no truly negative energy for the group. No mention of the pies, Pierce tosses the troll in the trash, and Jeff eats humble pie, while nobody rags on Abed for flexing his over-attentiveness, and everyone gets to feel comfortable together by the end. This whole show was incredibly well written, but then you find episodes like this, which make us ask questions about not just the characters and the show, but also ourselves...

    It’s so impressing how Dan Harmon creates so many layers to this scene. Some can understand that Jeff is a bad guy and the group is better without him. Pierce doesn’t give the gift to Troy, Britta don’t smoke in the bathroom, Shirley’s feelings are not hurt. But we can see that Jeff enjoys the goofiness of them, he is not a bad guy, but so flawed as any of them. In all other timelines some members of the group have a development, in the main, Jeff is the one who develops. As a brazilian “sorry for my bad english”.

    • @David-_-_-
      @David-_-_- 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      When he does a good deed he goes to the higher timeline. Jeffs character is kind of the main character the story follows. His time in community college is kind of "purgatory" for the bad stuff he did as a lawyer. Its like a temporary punishment - to teach him to make the right choices. To help those around him. Thats kind of the underlying arc of the whole show. When he chooses right and does a selfless deed and goes and gets the pizza himself - he goes to the higher timeline.

      Pierce mentions it in the following episode though

    • @feral26
      @feral26 5 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      I think the idea here is that Pierce often won't say something unless he knows that its either out of place or inappropriate. When Troy brought up airplane bathrooms, that was the closest any of the timelines came to setting Pierce up for his Eartha Kitt commnet. And so, because at that point his comment was no longer quite so out of place or inappropriate, he no longer felt like bringing it up. Maybe the basic point is that Pierce does what he does primarily just to get attention, whether positive or negative.

    • @-ok8ps
      @-ok8ps 4 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Jesse Berman I disagree. I think Pierce did not mention Eartha Kitt because he wants Jeff to think he is cool. He said it in all the other timelines because Jeff was there. He didn’t need to say it because Jeff left to get the pizza.

    So jeff isn't a toxic person, it may seem like the group is happier when he is not there but they can get out of control. They need jeff for control, in one of the earlier seasons we got to see that the group is at each others throats when jeff wasn't there. In this episode jeff sees that everybody needs to have a little fun and be goofy at some points. However Jeff is not the bad guy, he simply maintains everybody from tearing each other apart.

      it's actually kinda hinting that he's essentially a toxic person. the first time I watched this episode I noticed the big difference between Jeff and Abed's timelines. Troy's is the one everyone calls the darkest timeline, but really it's Abed's, because when he's gone everyone starts bickering or miscommunicating, Abed's the glue that holds the group together. Jeff's timeline, where he's absent, everyone's at their happiest, because despite any effort on his part, he's the solvent of the group's unity, the thing that really is always threatening, unintentionally or intentionally, to dissolve or destroy the group.

    On the other hand, it's YET ONE MORE TIMELINE where the ceiling fan is mysteriously low enough for Jeff to hit his head on - but it happens only once, not when he sits down, but only when he gets up. And apparently it's never happened to anyone before, or Abed would've warned him. Now, Joel McHale is tall, but Chevy Chase is *the same height* as McHale - so there were two people at the table tall enough to get hit on the head, and Abed didn't say anything. WHO PUTS A CEILING FAN THAT LOW?!?! and you can see Chevy Chase is only a couple of inches from hitting it, when he's standing erect - so the fan is only six foot six from the floor. AND the ceiling is clearly high enough that the fan could be a full two feet higher than it is, or even more! WHO DESIGNED THIS AND WHY DID NO ONE NOTICE THIS BEFORE (I mean Abed). And how does someone SIT DOWN under a ceiling fan that's just a couple of inches above their head, and not notice???? Ugh. I'm so angry now.
