My Parents Didn't Go to My Wedding

  • In my wedding you can see my family is absent within the wedding and that is mainly because my parents fear of flying. The fear of flying is not an easy thing to overcome especially when traveling across the world for a wedding. However, that is completely okay and I understand it is something I cannot control on my end. Thank you for the many blessings mom and dad!

      Greetings.
She had her true love Mother, his dad, his sister and all those lovely supportive people there to bridge in the gap.
      Truly, I would be grateful.
Most women don't a living mother. Nevertheless do they have a father or family to be at the wedding.
So look at the bright side of things.
All the people that was meant to be there was there. Some people have no one to be at the wedding but the one that they love the most in the world.
I am thankful that they shared their story.
I'm even more thankful that she found a man that loved her enough to marry her and not make her a single mother.
He protects and provides for her as it was written before they both were even born into this mortal realm.
Yes....it's always good to remain Grateful.
Her husband beautiful mother and Handsome Father was there to stand in for her biological parents.
It could have been worse than that. Where his parents were not supportive of their union. Where both of their parents what not have been there.
So it was a blessing and a miracle during that event of their lives.
One must also be thankful. That he didn't have other outside children with several different women. She married a man that only has children from her, loves Dianna, welcome her into their culture and family. Despite of what many many thought of their union.
The Union itself faced many challenges. But by miracles of god they've made it. The Parents from both sides are still in the land of the living and are in lives.
That's a Miracle and a Blessing that many people in this world will never have..... Unfortunately.
Always look and search out the "Good" in all things
      🕊️

In 1987 I had a small church wedding with my family and friends here in the US. Six months later I had a second wedding in my husband’s country. In both cases, one of us was without family. Nonetheless, we have had tremendous support from both sides these past 32 years. Indeed, now that there’s Skype and WhatsApp, not a week goes by without communication. The ceremony does not make the marriage, it’s all the ‘stuff’ afterwards.

@@diannainkorea I agree, I got married in Germany in the 37 years ago when me & my husband was in the Army. My parents , nor my husband’s family attended. Same reason as Dianna, fear of flying and going to foreign country. There was an “Alert” on that weekend on the army base, so none of our Army friends were able to attend either. Only two local co-worker Germans (witnesses & interpreters) from our jobs attended and the wedding and the official who married us. We have an international marriage license that is in 20 languages. This was before cell phones, internet ect
This was the best wedding because we were married in a castle and it was small an intimate, in hindsight I have no regrets. We did get to meet each other’s parents in the states.
We are still married today, best husband ever! So as long as you both love each other and your parents are happy for you that is all that counts! God bless you and your beautiful family! 😊💕❤️

I appreciate Diana's thought about her wedding without her parents. She is an understanding person. My wedding was at the courthouse without my parents. We had an excellent marriage for 26 years before my husband's passing. I feel that wedding ceremony is not so important. It depends on how both of you cultivate your marriage life together.

Thanks for explaining. I still wish someone from your direct family could have been there. It was just sad for no one from your immediate family to be there on your special day. Even having your brothers there would have been sufficient despite them having their own businesses. Their sister was getting married. So, I think they could have made an exception and had someone cover for them. Just my thought. Beautiful wedding though.🙂

I was very touched by your understanding, gracious spirit, and love for your parents, Dianna. You are very mature. I'm sure they wanted badly to be there for you. Even though it must have felt painful to a degree, you handled the situation with grace. You have loving family on both sides and you are building a very beautiful family filled with love and respect. Thank you for sharing this deep topic. I'm sure many people were very curious as to why your folks weren't there, but don't feel that you 'owe' others an explanation. I have no doubt they were there in spirit and were sending you all their love. You were one of the most elegant and beautiful brides I have ever seen. It was really a large (and very beautiful) wedding; how you handled yourself with such calmness and poise was remarkable. My respect and best wishes from Israel.

Stop trying to convince yourself...that the reasons your parents didn't come to the wedding is bc of their jobs. Most people who are afraid to fly will not get on a plane under any circumstances. I'm sorry you didn't have your parents or family with you on your wedding day. It had to have been very isolated and lonely. Memories...and you made it thru. Not to say you didn't fee some kinda way on your special day however...it's a blessing you can still enjoy good times with your parent after the event. Good luck in life, love and marriage.

I am also petrified flying, especially as I got older and long flights. But sometimes we just have to pray and go out in faith. I have a terrible fear of flying. I would hope I would be able to overcome that if I had to fly for my daughter's wedding, but with phobias, it is hard to tell. I think I would have to be drugged, but I would try that to go. Looks like you had a beautiful wedding. It is sad they had to miss it.

I love how you were able to come to terms with not having your family there. However, I can see that you were disappointed and sad not having your family there. Your wedding was beautiful inspire of not having your culture there. Maybe you can have another wedding in the U.S. or have a beach wedding in the Bahamas Would your parents take a cruise?

I can understand, it is a very long flight. I taught English in South Korea. Prior to my flight, I deprived myself of sleep so I would sleep on the flight. I pray you and your husband enjoy much happiness.🌻

Brave you!! African american have all kinds of fears! That's the reason for so many churches on every corner of their communities. Fear plays a great part of the past. I have been to wedding in this country (America) where either the mom or dad or both didn't show up for support. Most of the time, they didn't like in the africian american, the person their child (Son or daughter) was marrying. You really didn't have to explain, but thank you 😊
The brave you, I so proud of the a young africian american women that don't live the box, they travel and work aboard. My daughter makes director of a large company, have been truly been bless, but not married. I tell her and friends, you guys need to get out the box there is no shortage of men it is a shortage of husbands there is a different. He may be of another race especially for black women with strong characters and great careers. God himself have built you up, the husband has to strong be strong to carried you. Kramer Harris the vice president can testify to that.
I am a Black Elderly woman encouraging, the black young adult women coming behind!!

Your parents should have put you first before their bondage of fear; you are their daughter, and your father should have been there to walk you down that isles. Your mother also should have been standing next to your father at his side, you are their only baby girl! That's a big moment and Special time in your life! Your second most important day of a young lady life is graduating from college and graduate school,; thirdly, giving birth to your twins! Your brothers also should have at your big day to represent you. I remember finishing graduate school, earning my MAB, and no one in my family was in attendance at my ceremony; not my husband and not even my son and daughter; not even my brother and sister. I still hurt from that, because that was a big day for me, and I have supported my husband through his 20 years of military service. I just think your parents were selfish, just like my husband.

True! When I listened to her explanations its VERY clear they just didn't want to come. It felt more like she was making up excuses for them not wanting to attend the wedding. They knew she was getting married in advance....so they had plenty of time to arrange/plan find someone to help with their businesses🤷🏿‍♀️. And doesn't she have cousins or relatives that could have attended on behalf of the family....🤔

It does seem strange. Owning a business is more flexibility even if one family member shows up. However I like that her wedding was still beautiful and she was embraced by others.

Reminds me of my mother not wanting to attend my graduation from university for the same reason. I was willing to pay for her airfare and accommodation but nope, these incentives still did not faze her. At least my older sister and my aunt, who is like a second mother to me, did attend.

Why do your parents have this fear without flying before? Did they hear a lot of things in the news when they were younger about plane crashes? I had a fear of flying when I was younger due to bad turbulence on a flight from UK to NY when I was 14 years old. It’s many years later I’m now over this fear by travelling a lot more, doing solo travelling and I’ve even done sky diving before which was so much fun! I hope they can face their fears one day. The only way you can remove a fear is if you put yourself in the situation you are fearful of.

It dd work a lil i say this because once i got on that plane i thought i was going to die!!/ And then it took off!!!!!! Omg about ten min in this calm came over me and then i just felt stupid because it really wasn't bad at all! And i thought all these yrs I've been scared to death and it was nothing!!!!
