I was fortunate to have opened for the Goo Goo Dolls on 3 consecutive dates about 20 years ago. John, his band and his management were incredible kind to us. I got to chat for a few hours with John about songwriting - he gave me the best advice of my whole career. He said, “You’ve got to write through the ‘B’ material until you get to the ‘A’ material.” Changed my life. Great interview Kenny.

I wish I had advice like this at 16, 17, 18 when I was writing embarrassing songs thinking I was simply terrible at it. Since then this has become apparent, you have to write through the bad ones to get to the good ones. I thought every song has to be a masterpiece.

Totally agree @ponzo1967 - I want through my own imposter syndrome after (luckily) writing a good song when I was young. But, like any story that an author writes, there are always revisions. I don’t know why it’s not discussed more in songwriting. But thanks to John’s advice I still have a career in music writing songs for Film/TV. It sounds so simple - but it’s so profound, ya know? I wish you inspiration and completion on your next song(s). 🙏

I love the history of the GGD John and Robbie. Did the grind for almost 10 years before truly breaking with Name, then poor John was worried about staying on the hill after that hit, then hits it straight out of the park with Iris…started out as punks and took a lot of crap when they hit the mainstream ….so what. These guys just never gave up…and can still keep up in modern times…well deserved and an inspiration. As far as the music,,,all I can say for me is it has a warm comforting aura about it.

1000% yes yes yes. These are my sentiments exactly about them. I hope that one of these days I get the chance to tell them the most heartfelt thank you for what their music has come to mean to me. John and Robby were probably the best musical role models I could’ve had as a kid. Hard workers that stuck together and stuck it out and stayed down to earth when it paid off. They’re the best, man.

i'm a singer and i really admire his singing! his use of vocal effects (rasp, breath, subtle distortion) is incredibly dialed in, and the songs are surprisingly rangy, with lots of soaring A4's, a nice tenor money note. i say surprisingly only because his tone masks the height, the rasp adds a lovely sense of weight. and more than anything, his approach is always so emotional and tasteful

Kenny, this once again is class. I’m due a catch up on your vids due to a really busy stretch, but saw this come up and knew I had to dive in. GooGoo Dolls have been another like Nickelback that people love to crap over, but just listen to some of the hooks they’ve come up with! Jonny is another guy I know I could just sit with for a few hours chewing it over with. The story of his little girl certainly hits home, and I’m just turned 51 with a 3 year old.
Getting that insight into his mind like this does, has been brilliant.
Keep knocking ‘em out - it’s great the way you give guests the space to discuss what they do, but you also coax the best out of them. As Jonny said, you have the infectious energy, and that’s why people love you. That comes across in the vids, so thanks once again. Karl

The work Kenny has put in to his craft, to be so highly skilled behind the drums and his PMA is why people love him. His positivity is infectious as someone brought up by pessimist I struggle with this haha great conversation Johnny seems like a real nice guy and one hell of a song writer/artist.

    Fantastic interview Kenny!
    Nice getting to know John.
I would lose my mind if you interviewed Mickey Curry. I meet him at NAMM many years ago and he lit up when I said you were there as well.
You and Mickey, by far were my two biggest influences. It's a shame Mickey is not with Bryan Adams anymore. The band does not sound the same without Mickey's pocket.
    All the best Kenny!

@@KennyAronoffOfficial I know it will be very difficult because it seems that Alex has very little desire to come out but you never know. Sooner or later he will have to broach the topic and talk about Van Halen, Eddie's greatness and take some well-deserved honors. All VH fans want nothing more than for him to look good and play as great as he can.
