the best thing about TPE is playing TPE roulette on weather your train is going to get cancelled
I suggest we render Transpennine services into binary code (0=cancelled,1=running), turn those figures into base 10 figures, and use it as a random number generator
I have a slight issue with the frequency part, TPE normally run a 0tph service all all routes😂 good video!

Regular user of TPE here, my thoughts on the TOC as a whole:
Reliability: Poor
Trains: Good
Customer service: Good
First Class: not value for money
Station cleanliness (the ones that are managed by TPE): Good
Price: Quite impressive, and free if your train is actually delayed/cancelled
"Reliability: poor" is doing some heavy lifting there!
IMO, I think that TPE has one of the best modern train liveries.. My favourite Class 68 livery happens to be the TPE livery
That's the only good thing about the company at the moment 😂
I think the Chiltern Class 68 is quite classic looking to be fair however they only have them running once or twice a day
super interesting, as always! it might be interesting to do an east midlands railway video at some point; it seems like whenever I take a train round these parts I discover another random EMR service that I didn't know existed

One of the difficulties of doing a map for TransPennine is that nobody actually knows what their service pattern is - it depends on whether you are looking at what they are actually running, what they are supposed to be running, or what they said they would be running, none of which bear any relationship to each other. Scarborough to Manchester _should_ be hourly but for today there are only 6 trains booked to run through with others terminating at York or Leeds, and gaps of 3 or 4 hours between through trains. Newcastle to Manchester _should_ be twice per hour but mostly they are only running one of those two (not always the same one). Cleethorpes is getting a slightly more reliable service but it isn't many weeks ago that there were regularly gaps of 3 hours between trains. They keep promising that they will get back to the pre-pandemic timetable at the next change and then failing to get anywhere close to it because they haven't got anywhere enough staff to run the service.
Fleet management has gone to pot - with the introduction of the Nova fleets, the Teesside and Scarborough services were supposed to use the class 68 + Mk5a sets allowing the Hull and Cleethorpes services to be doubled up to 6-car sets, but only 2 of the 13 class 68 + Mk5a sets are actually in use today (and one of those is only for one journey) (which doesn't seem to be unusual), with _all_ Teesside services using the old class 185s, meaning that a large number of Teesside, Hull and Cleethorpes services are formed of 3-car sets, which is inadequate.
Good video, but a crap operation - having a decent livery on their trains is just about their only saving grace!
0:59 Weirdly, Transpennine Express is now the only operator that serves Morley station. The station is still owned by Northern Trains and is run by Northern staff
"serves" is doing some heavy lifting there.
TPE also uses Longsight depot in Manchester for its class 68s and mark 5 coaching stock, which also runs to Cleethorpes once a day at the minute.

The trains are built in Spain where "No va" will apply to all those trains they cancel.

That might be rather difficult. As I understand it, freight rail tends to run on an as-needed basis. Some flows are regular, some are much more irregular and intermittent. I don't think they really publish their 'timetables' like the passenger operators do.

@@heidirabenau511 i very much agree, rolling stock + customer service are better still aswell as the website. The cancellations however gets on my nerves. I would say in the recent years even Northern runs a more impressive service.
Lucky if they run 6 trains a day on the south route.
05:04 in the morning from Cleethorpes calls at Althorpe, Crowle, South Throne and Hatfield and Stainforth.
Also Doncaster is a depot for their. class 802s.

Yes! I hope so too!
TransPennine Express is the best train operator in the North of England and I do like their trains including the Class 185 Desiro DMU, Nova 1 Class 802 Bi-Mode. Nova 2 Class 397 Civity EMU that replaced the Class 350/4 Desiro and the Nova 3 Class 68+Mk5.
Just shows what a low bar is set as the best TOC in the North. The government doesn’t really understand the issues of rail up here, and that’s truly disappointing.

I would have given this a thumbs down back when released, but FTPE has gotten better in the last month (April) and now the government are taking the franchise back 😀
"best"?!?! I'd rather be stuck on an ancient Northern stopping service than try and use Transpennine. They cancel practically half the trains,their virtually unusable.

So you're telling me that TransPennine Express operate a stopping service between Huddersfield and Leeds - a route which is, by definition, neither trans-Pennine, nor an express?
What a time to be alive.
And Crosscountry provides a service from Cardiff to Nottingham which isn't a Crosscountry service. EMR provides a service from Liverpool to Norwich but doesn't start or finish in the East Midlands.

Yes, the stopping services Leeds-Huddersfield and Huddersfield-Manchester were transferred from Northern to TransPennine because the line uses a different signalling/control system, which is not used anywhere else on the Northern network - so rather than complicate operations by requiring a handful of Northern services to be compatible with the new system, it was easier to move the operations to TransPennine as their fleet was all going to be compatible anyway. Still slightly mad that they are running trains that are neither express nor crossing the Pennines, as you say, but there is a semi-sensible reason for it!
@@heidirabenau511 Not sure why you think that Cardiff to Nottingham isn't a cross-country service - it's a long-distance route that goes through Birmingham and doesn't serve London, which is pretty much the definition used by XCountry! And the Liverpool to Norwich service _runs through_ the East Midlands, so it makes at least as much sense for it to be operated by EMR as anyone else.
I really wonder why TPE didn't just order a uniform fleet for the NOVA project. Now they have 3 microfleets instead, complicating stock allocation and crew training. And at least one of those fleets isn't very reliable.
I think they _wanted_ to order a full fleet of Hitachi bi-mode trains, which would have given them the flexibility to run everywhere and future-proof them for further electrification ... but because Hitachi were working flat-out to build the new fleets for LNER and GWR, it would have meant a significant delay in completing the order, so instead they just got the bi-modes for the Liverpool-Newcastle route that has significant electrified sections but also needs diesel capability, and then a separate electric fleet for the Scottish services and diesel fleet for the other "North" routes (which has been largely mothballed with the reduction in services).

There are talks about TPE and Northern to merge together
And did you know that the class 68 will soon be withdrawn from Transpennie express and since the class 68's will be gone 802 and 185 will take the remaining routes from the 68. The class 68 will be withdrawn because of failiure issues with the class 68 meaning that Transpennie express will have to withdraw them by december 2023 and give them to another company but we dont know that company yet, so write it in the comments who do you think will get the class 68.

But there are some rare services like man Piccadilly to Sheffield via Huddersfield, liverpool lime street to man Victoria, man Victoria to saltburn, etc. What do u say about this?
A TOC with so much potential and yet its current route map, use of trains and level of cancellations show just what a disjointed and mismanaged mess of a company it is.
So many trains cancelled and even when they actually are running, hardly any of them seem to use the Nova sets

Can I ask where you get your timetable information from? It's just we haven't had a two hourly service between Glasgow and Manchester for a very long time. We used to have that but now we only get four trains a day. I've asked TransPennine before if they ever plan to reinstate the old Glasgow-Manchester service frequency but they've told me they don't know. Just wondering if you know something I don't!
I have just taken the data off the Transpennie Website as well as Real Train Times. I suspected it used to be this, then the Cairstairs upgrade happened when they ran no services, and then since the summer timetable has kicked in, reduced services now

Can you make each of your route diagrams into a file so that people can download them? Some of them are way better than what the train companies provide themselves for the services.

when did it change from hull to picadilly to be hull to liverpool as ive always known it to be hull to piccadilly, i had to use the national rail app to verify your route in the video
Best bet would be 12th December 2022 as this is when TP realised their timetable and what I based this video on

TPE don’t have a depot in Sheffield, they just stable the units on one of the middle roads after they cancel them. You only have t sit on any of the stations they serve and listen to the cancellation announcements. Terrible service.
