  • Jesse and Chris bring you their spoiler-free review/first reactions of Dune: Part Two. We saw it at the fan screening in glorious IMAX!
    “Dune: Part Two” will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a path of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.
    Villeneuve directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jon Spaihts based on Herbert’s novel. The film is produced by Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Villeneuve, Tanya Lapointe and Patrick McCormick. The executive producers are Joshua Grode, Herbert W. Gains, Jon Spaihts, Thomas Tull, Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, Kim Herbert, with Kevin J. Anderson serving as creative consultant.
    Villeneuve is again collaborating with his “Dune” creatives: Oscar-winning director of photography Greig Fraser; Oscar-winning production designer Patrice Vermette; Oscar-winning editor Joe Walker; Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert; Oscar-nominated costume designer Jacqueline West. Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer is again on hand to create the score.

    JUST SAW IT. I'M STILL TRYING TO FIND WORDS. I TRIED TALKING ABOUT IT COMING OUT OF THE THEATER, IT WAS MOSTLY HYPER EXCITED YAMMERING. I'M STILL KINDA IN A MILD SHOCK FROM IT. I KNEW THE STORY, I READ IT WHEN I WAS 22, AND I READ DUNE MESSIAH, AND I READ CHILDREN OF DUNE. NOT FROM THE STORY IMPACT( WHICH IS THE BEST SCIENCE FICTION STORY I HAVE EVER READ), JUST IN HOW EXTREMELY WELL THE MOVIE WAS DONE..... DIRECTING, ACTING, EFFECTS, SCREENPLAY, DESIGN, COSTUMES, CINEMATOGRAPHY. IT WAS A FULL BATTERY OF PERFECTION, AND IT PACKED A MAMMOTH PUNCH. HANS ZIMMERS SCORE WAS MESMERIZING. I HAVE TO SEE IT AGAIN. GONNA BE A LOT OF AWARDS FOR THIS ONE.

      Yeah our review was almost more of a reaction because of how jaw dropping it is. Hard to find the words to praise a movie that is so well made in every sense. Truly an epic cinematic achievement

      Well, the first part always includes exposition and character introductions, so it’s going to be slower with less action.

      If I had to make a list of what I intend to see, what I feel like I MUST see, Dune Part Two was definitely the first:
      -March 29th - Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
      -April 19th - The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
      -July 26th - Deadpool & Wolverine
      -December 25th - Nosferatu
      Some "maybe" movies, depending on the company
      -The Fall Guy, A Quiet Place: Day One, Horizon: An American Saga Chapters 1 + 2, Twisters, Transformers One, Sonic the Hedgehog 3
      I don't go to a TON of movies these days, I pick and choose my battles carefully...but there are usually a few "Must-see" for me...although after Dune Part Two and Godzilla x Kong....my hype and interest in anything else is significantly diminished.

    Literary history buff here, one way I think this was written so well is it gives actual gravitas and punch to showing how real holy war conquerors like Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan among others stirred up seemingly everyone who spoke their language. Read the book and couldn't have asked for better. Its exactly what Herbert was interested in, and Villeneuve's adaptive delivery made me want to pick up a crysknife of my own.

    I was still wearing my dirty work Uniform, when I drove like a mad man clear across town to see it opening night...got in the theatre just in time when the lights were going dim. It's the greatest Sci Fi movie ever made. Only a few other movies even come close. I don't cry, but I had tears on my face at the end of this movie. I so desperately want to see it again in IMAX.

      How great it is to be able to experience a movie that makes you feel like you’ve just watched the greatest one ever made. It’s the reason we love movies and being able to see them in the theater! The more we keep thinking about Dune, the better it gets. Round 2 is happening soon!

    I think Austin Butler gives one of the best villain PERFORMANCES in a long time. But yeah, the character isn’t focused on enough to say it’s up there with Anton Chigurh or Heath Ledger Joker. But the performance is peak.

    • @thefilmjump
      @thefilmjump  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Agreed. There is nuance there, and he’s a fantastic villain, but I think he needed just a bit more to join the top. That knife fight though….man what a scene.

    My only disappointment was, in the book, Paul's sister Alia was born and was about 3, and it was her that killed Baron Vladimir with the Gom Jabber and acknowledged the Baron as grandfather. In all other respects the movie was amazing.

    For the people who say 1 was boring.. I don't know what you were watching but was it the same movie. The first hour of 1 was setting up the movie and once the attack or total annihilation of house atreides begun dune 1 was one flawless epic, breathtaking scifi movie. And I go so far to say that the action sequences of 1 were better than in 2. The reason why 2 feels better is that the story is on a more important place of the journey of Paul and fremen and everybody that was in it. I think for the people who have critique dont know what the movie is about and I was one of those people especially after I watched 2.. I did research on the story and understand completely what it's about which makes both 1 and 2 automatically bona fide masterpieces I'd even argue 1 is very very underrated. The first time I was really waiting for sequels is the lord of the rings trilogy. Than came Nolan's batman trilogy that made me hooked and now it's Dune and I'm pretty convinced Denis isn't going to disappoint he's a too good director for that.. Perfection!! I'm kind of hooked on the subject matter of dune with false prophecies and the fall of good people becoming villains.

      One of us (Jesse) is a much bigger fan of BR 2049 than the other. But both of us agree that this film is better. Kind of apples and oranges, but Part Two, especially when coupled with Part One, provides a much more satisfying and epic experience. You will not be disappointed

      you don't wanna watch a blind man go mad deciphering all his and the universes possible futures? 🤣. Creepy intelligent babies are not mainstream? ... what about the Huts? 🤣🤣🤣.
      I'm sure it could be made more like a thriller... more personal and disturbing. Hopefully the action fans are open minded to switch genre a little bit. I'm sure Denis would make the character stuff more dramatic (book can make you feel a little distant from the emotion of the characters), and the book (Messiah) glosses over a lot of implied events (wars in far off worlds etc) which could be exploited in an action oriented film :). I think the studio execs ultimately decide and they'll push for it if part 2 box office doubles their spend (which it most certainly will). Actually now I think about it, the android aspects of the film could go really deep into interesting themes etc (don't want to spoil but I presume you'll know what I mean). Basically it might be a film that Blade Runner 2049 fans would love. Maybe even more than part 2. There are a lot of themes to flesh out and I'm sure part 2 could not handle them all.

      I think Denis would deliver a solid adaptation regardless

    • @ChrisPeteG
      @ChrisPeteG 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Having done a bit of research into it...I generally think I will be one of those "Part 1 and 2 were enough"
      I understand the intrigue and value of inverting and subverting a narrative, of bringing a story to a tragic conclusion.
      But the journey of Dune 1 and 2 was so supremely satisfying, and I love the open and uncertain notes that it ends on. I don't necessarily need to see any further chapters to see how it all plays out and unravels.
      I don't think the high of Part 2 will be matched, particularly by a narrative like Messiah.
