    As a 15 yo, its so unbelievably scary. I felt so unsafe at school from guys who would sexually assault girls, send child porn on their group chats, joke about raping me and other girls, they’d sit down as groups and get photos of girl’s in my year in bikinis to judge and stare at, they’d giggle in sex ed when we were learning about sexual assault, etc because they’ve been so radicalised online and watch violent porn at such a young age that I’m doing homeschooling now. It was my first time being in a gender mixed school and being amongst guys my age, plus with my father’s abuse I’m now paranoid of men and what makes it worse? Having people online threaten to rape me etc, adults don’t fully understand how severe this is right now.

    I'm with Australia on this, children deserve to experience the childhood I had instead of becoming zombified

    8:10 im not sure how old you are but in my final year of high school , in which I was studying GCSE history, I did start to notice diverse fascism. There was a boy of Indian decent who would whisper bulldoze in the ear of any muslim sitting near him. There was a polish guy who would talk about the glory of wars and cry racism for talking back and then just straight up white supremists in the court yard (of local decent). What I did notice was the lack of islamic fascist this could be due to the prevent strategy and the five values being introduced. While fascism is wrong in all cases its interesting to see students being radicalised and the school system showing tolerance for some bigotry but not others.

    A few years ago I used to buy into this anti-smartphone moral panic hysteria as well. I’m a totally blind guy living on my own, and were it not for the use of certain apps on my smart phone, I wouldn’t be able to independently do banking, read mail, and Handle other essential aspects of my daily life. Also, the only addiction I’m aware of is that to drugs and alcohol. I’m sick of this overuse of the term addiction. Also, sure let’s blame the kids problems on them being addicted to their smart phones. Let’s do that instead of focusing on how most of them have neglectful families they probably drive them to overuse of smart phones in the first place. But that’s probably a conversation that none of you are ready for yet.

    Facebook will proudly declare that they will not tolerate things like hate speech; yet I have reported such posts only to be told that the posts do not violate their community standards. Well... maybe you have to change your standards.
    I rarely engage with social media now. Im still on Facebook, but it's almost impossible to engage with any group or post that hasn't been taken over by trolls. The amount of confrontational content that now invades every kind of group is overwhelming. And Facebook really couldn't care less.

    I just want social media platforms to be a lot more regulated without all the misinformation BS, as well as the dangerously advanced algorithms that are increasing the screen time of the average smartphone user. I hope that this does happen soon. For now, I'll be having an internet presence on a personal website.

    Thank you for covering this with such detail. I'd love to see a followup on this topic.
    This has been an increasing concern of mine ever since the beginning of the pandemic. I'm a private nanny. Where I used to see smart phones as a potential issue for attention spans/school focus etc., I now see them as extremely dangerous devices, with exponential detrimental effects that we are *nowhere* near understanding. Children I have personally looked after, particularly ages 7-12, have admitted to me that they have seen videos of explicit sexual content, videos of executions/deaths, that they've felt bullied by their friends on snapchat/instagram... I have overheard their friends repeating right-wing conspiracy theories, hailing the likes of Andrew Tate (at age 8!!!)... And the worst thing is that their parents are uninterested. They think, "well what am I going to do, not let them have a phone?" And these kids have no context to understand what they're seeing, either, like you said. So they just have this insane information entering their brains with no way to process it.
    They also can't do anything without their phones. Like the study you shared, but 100x worse. Eating dinner, scrolling; watching TV, scrolling; playing video games! scrolling! They have a meltdown if they hear their phone buzz and can't immediately stop what they're doing to go check it. It has made my job a living hell.
    I can only imagine what it's like for teachers of teens. I'd rather die than try to manage this but to the tune of 20-30 students, all day long. Wtf are we doing to ourselves and our children?? I actually have perhaps an aggressively radical opinion about this, that children should have zero access to smartphones. Literally a full ban. At least until we understand with some more certainty how to safeguard them from these issues.

    The point about p0rn0graphic material is interesting, because when the Online Safety Bill was voted on, I remember a lot of far-right channels like Lotus Eaters were talking about it like it was a terrible bill and were dead against it, when of course the main purpose of it was to better regulate illegal activity online and ensure children are less likely to be exposed to harmful content, bit suspect that the likes of Carl Benjamin would be against a bill regulating that, don't you think? I've no doubt he probably talked about it as if it was some sinister plan to 'silence free speech', but then when have these far-right types ever been honest about their real views and beliefs? If they told the truth about what they really think, like that time Paul Joseph Watson was recorded on tape espousing his hateful rhetoric when he thought most people wouldn't hear it, then they wouldn't be as popular.

      There's something very creepy about Mr Benjamin. Unfortunately, I think he's clever enough to use a fake name and vpn to do what I suspect he does in private..

    It's nothing to do with smartphones. The youth of today are influenced by people who are willing to say and do anything for a dollar.. There was one my sister's 12 year old kid was watching, who they thought was making a lot of money by being a prick to people on videos and showing off his wealth (As if that's anything kids should be into..) but when you dig deeper, the kid is pimping himself, his girlfriend and any other 'barely legal' girl who will do it, from his house, on onlyfans.

    • @hippybuddhist

      And most of them watch those people on phones. Granted, there are many layers to the issue, but to state that phones are not part of the problem is naive.

      I probably phrased that wrong. It's quite clear they have their own bias, but I attempt to read them all so there's some element of truth in the middle of all their reporting. I am no fan of any of them as an instiution, but they do have rules which stop them from going completely over the edge when it comes to fact-checking their sources.
      So do GB News, however... (video tomorrow).

    I disagree with banning kids to smartphones what about queer kids who rely on it for safe spaces away from abuse and such how do you solve that? thats a massive issue with the massive splinter of queer groups having no places to go so its online., is a question i had or we just gonna forget that reasons for being in groups exist? some have them to escape abuse from there parents and banning them basically could just put them back into harm of there parents with no way out just some thought but i doubt id get an answer.

    I liked your video and your perspective.
    As someone who is conservative / right leaning I like to see people with more progressive / left views articulate their opinions.
    As someone who is Australian, I think in theory yes, the social media ban for under 16s is good but I don't support it. It really should be up to the parents and not the state. I also believe there are more nefarious reasons as to why they want to ban social media for under 16s, like suppressing Palestinian content about the genocide, content that is much harder on scrutinising the government then mainstream media and when these teens reach voting age not voting the major parties.
    I also don't like the idea of suppressing / removing pieces of content that offend some. I'm all on free speech. Now obviously that is separate from inciting violence or bullying because that really isn't expressing an opinion. I also do not like the idea of un-anonymising social media by linking it to some type of digital ID and I believe that could be very dangerous.
    It's also interesting to see your perspective on Starmer's government and that he is not going far enough as people on the right think he has already gone way too far.
    As for algorithms being made public, I think it is interesting but I'm not sure I agree with it. Also algorithms trying to show progressive content against conservative content would be good but I don't think it would happen. A lot of people like to stay in there echo chambers so if they see the content it would just make them frustrated, it's really up to the individual to seek out different perspectives and not be completely indoctrinated but that does rely on you being educated.

    I don't think banning social media accounts for teenagers is something that should be implemented. Far too many privacy risks.
    If social media companies do age verification via ID you would have to require it for every account. You would shut out thousands of people with no formal identification. The main other option being to use credit cards which could just be exploited by spoilt kids.
    Agree with a lot of your sentiments but it's a naw for me chief.
    More needs to be done to encourage parents to set up devices with limitations and remote family controls rather than letting their kids go buck wild. The internet's a dangerous place but don't punish the kids for it. They have privacy rights too. It's not illegal to fake your details if you're not seeking to make financial gains.

    Wow, you're becoming quite prolific, I've got a backlog of your videos to catch up on! Just one criticism if I may...when you cut to a wall of text, I automatically stop listening to you and instead try to read the text - but then I can't concentrate on it because your voiceover is still fighting for my attention. It means it's hard to engage with what you're saying, because I'm constantly being distracted. Sometimes I pause the video to read the text, but then I lose the flow of your voiceover. I realise you want to show your sources, but there are less distracting ways to do that.
    Other than that, really enjoying seeing this channel grow, keep up the good work mate!

      @DrJoeLovelace  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thank you for the feedback. May I ask what might be the best way to show my sources? I would genuinely like to know to make it better for you! Maybe less text? I don't know, just trying to think of ways to improve it!

    • @SheargalFarkey
      @SheargalFarkey 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@DrJoeLovelace Well, I suppose that's the tricky part! Definitely if you are directly quoting a passage within the text it'd help to highlight that - the first thing I usually do is scan the text to see if what you're saying is a direct quote from the text. Otherwise, I appreciate it's tricky - you can include sources in the video description, but then they might ignored. It depends how important it is to you to have those sources on display - whether you want the info in them to be read by the viewer, or simply to back up what you're saying. Or maybe you could do shorter "further reading" videos to accompany the main video...I'm sure you'll find a way to do it as you hone your style in future though.

    The algorithm doesn’t promote extremism, it promotes the content which gets interacted with. The more interaction content gets, the more it gets promoted, and it is easier to get viewers to interact via hatred or confirmation bias than proper discourse.
    Social media seeing all interactions as positive and disregard to moderation & bots has allowed them to become tools for radicalisation. I also believe too many people nowadays are seeing things as only black or white, which also helps with radicalisation.
    BTW, if you want to give a negative impression on algorithmic content, just stop viewing it. Don’t dislike it, don’t report non-harmful content, don’t comment about your displeasure, really don’t look at the creators profile, just stopping watching it. Less than 100% view time is the one of the only true negative impressions social media companies understands.
