    Makoto is such a joy to watch. We are so lucky to have access to these concerts once only available "live". This performance by pianist, orchestra and conductor Gilbert is truly masterful. I also couldn't help but sense Gershwin looking down on the creative treatment of his masterpiece with approval and marvel.

Bravo!!

    Everything nice and good till 1:34, when Makoto decides to highjack the stage in order to enjoy himself while "improving" on Gershwin. What a sad half an hour for those that are serious about music.
    Don't get me wrong : the man knows his instrument. But just as it is the case that being proficient in this or that language doesn't mean you're also a poet in that very language, being able to produce every possible sound on your instrument, doesn't necessarily mean you'll be able to produce beautiful music as well.
    Gershwin re-known piano version is so much more beautiful, complex, and rewarding than Makoto's sad little ego trip piece. I won't be getting back those 30 minutes any time soon. That's for sure.

    He uses "modern" language, like "after Chick Corea", or Oscar Peterson. It might be not acceptable for "classical classical fan" nor might be authentic, indeed, I don't like his Ravel-Be bop and Bach-Be bop, those are completely ridiculous for context of classical, or any sence of music, though, only with Gershwin, I feel there are some importance for doing this.

    Really should be labeled as "Ozone's Idiosyncratic Interpretation of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue" as it strays way too far from what Gershwin actually wrote. Does he ever miss an opportunity to bend, stretch, tweak, modify, warp, or otherwise distort what Gershwin put on paper? Call it a jazz version or a "play" on it or a "Rap-sody on a Rhapsody in Blue" but it made me cringe.

    • @tillm2481

      Steven Krulick Gershwin would be on his feet with standing ovation!!! There is a reason for the note by orchestrator Ferdi Grofé in sheets „until pianist nods“. What Gershwin put on paper is a basic structure..and then all is up to the pianist and his abilitities. The Rhapsody in Blue is nothing for the normal classic pianist even world class pianists but who totally lack the swing.

      I enjoyed very much that he did this. Maybe he went a bit too far sometimes but it’s fresh. I makes me regret even more that Herbie Hancock didn’t took that kind of path with his version.

      @ThatOneNerd14 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Its still a fantastic rendition of the piece and captures the spirit of the piece. Sticking to a composer's instructions becomes boring after too long since everything sounds too similar, and using Jazz improvisation on an actual Jazz inspired piece gives a fresh perspective from other renditions. Plus, the improvisation is still inspired by that New York style Gershwin wanted.
      Edit: I agree with Till M in that Gershwin even suggested the pianist try something new, since he himself was a Jazz pianist.
