Hayato Sumino , he has not been trained in any conservatoire. His mother is a piano teacher and he studied at Tokyo university and got his master degree in engineering. It is just like a British contestant who use to be a student in University of Oxford , not in Royal Academy of Music, or an American contestant who finished his degree in California institute of Technology or MIT, not in The Julliard School.
He is a amazing many talented man.
I have never seen such a man who can preform and study well.

Really amazingly talented. His natural sound is there because he did not enter any conservatory. Its more free and totally his own. It is clear by the way he performs that these pieces are his own choice and he truly loves these.

@@gracenoora1854 Totally agree. And quite possibly the jury of the Chopin Competition is looking for a performance 'a la conservatoire' so Cateen's 'au naturel' performance (but clothed!😉) did not fit.

    • @gracenoora1854
      @gracenoora1854 2 ปีที่แล้ว +319

@@cooldebt sometimes I think the jurors may have been more than a little conflicted because they obviously see the genius of Hayato, and how charismatic his natural sound is, (he got up to Stage 3) but of course they are too bound by their established set of standards. It would have been fantastic if the jurors showed more willingness to step out of their box and welcome the diversity.

That almost reminded me of Stanislav Bunin (I think it was) from the early 1980s. He got so nervous that he was shaking and left in the middle of his performance after “slipping” a few times. I am glad Hayato was able to overcome his nerves and he got into his performance mode! What a talented young man!

As a classical pianist myself, I could hear the mistakes he was making, but most people can't. Was his performance perfect? Definitely not, but I felt like his interpretation and musicality are so much better than others that get trained to interpret these songs in such a perfect way leaving no room for an organic flow to the song.
I felt like Hayato captured the essence of Chopin even if his playing wasn't perfect. Brilliant stuff.

@@alegriart From my understanding, sometimes he would make changes on the fly. Even his contemporaries played his song with different dynamics (to his annoyance). I think his etudes are meant to be played very precisely since they are basically pieces meant to improve your technique, while his preludes and sonatas are much more flexible. In the end though, one of the most aspects of all of his songs is making sure the melody undertone is sustained and can be heard perfectly, which Hayato does extremely well.

@@katkat3458 oh, it's one of my most favorite anime. In the anime, he completely makes his own rendition of the songs, which is controversial. Hayato isn't making his own rendition as he is using different (and better imo) stresses on different notes and slightly different tempo changes and volume changes. In the anime, the MC almost makes it sound like a different song altogether, and it's beautiful. So I guess it really depends on how much artistic license you enjoy and why you are listening. For me, the Chopin competition is all about trying to bring out the feelings that Chopin himself was trying to convey, which is why I think Hayato is excellent and why I dislike the robotic performances.

I'm a huge fan of Hayato Sumino and though he didn't make it to the finals, it is thoroughly impressive that he can perform at such an elite level with no formal training. I think this speaks volumes of his talent. If you follow his social media channels he is so skilled at music it honestly blows my mind. He can transform classical standards into both modern and jazz styles (which are mesmerizing) and ALSO write his own music. I honestly don't know a more multi-talented, cross-genre musician of this generation. If someone does, please let me know...

What do you mean "academically correct" ? In all the pieces that Liszt wrote, the cadenzas he left there were supposed to only be an example, the performer was expected to improvise one while playing the piece. I hope I don't sound rude but it is really sad to see that deep in our current generation ideology any performance that is not exactly fitting some standards but is instead creative and innovative is kind of repressed...

Sumino's story continues after the Chopin Competition and there is an article by the senior producer of NHK general bureau for America in "NHK World Japan" 6 Feb, 2024 that is well worth a read! He made his USA debut in Boston Symphony Hall with Boston Pops in 2023 and is currently playing around the world with various famous orchestras. He will debut at Salle Gaveau in Paris on 7 Nov, 2024.

You really cannot BS yourself through this - there are 200 years of performance history and everyone has a pretty good idea how it should be played and hears the slightest error. I really cannot appreciate these young artists enough, all of whom devote their lives to this music and deliver nearly flawless performances, with the differences in quality being really marginal at this point.

Some pianists whose innate gifts are such to be directly aligned to the source of Music itself humble themselves upon entering competitions such as this to make antiquated the ideals of even the most seasoned of jurors. The most superb and exquisite performance was produced. At that time, I felt Chopin and Poland more deeply and profoundly than in anyone else's performance, and my heart trembled tremendously. His truly beautiful, profound, sometimes delicate, and sometimes magnificent tone was like a connection to the beautiful and profound universe. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Hayato. He was able to play most of these compositions at a young age, but not with the refinement that he now has. That requires hard work. It is unusual that he graduated from a university not focusing on music. It is very possible to be an excellent pianist if you have the inate talent and study privately with great teachers who are not necessarily employed by a Music University. it is clear that his ear is as finely developed as his technique. He has a mysterious kind of charisma that cannot be totally explained. Very special musician. I hope he takes good care of himself.

Do you remember Hayato Sumino said " I wish I could have played Chopin's Piano Concerto No1." at some interview in Warsaw, just when he was not able to be one of the finalists of ' the18th Chopin Competition' in 2021?
However his dream has come true! In 2022 a very exciting news was announced. He would join the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, as a soloist, and play 'Chopin's Piano Concerto No1' at 11 cities in Japan in September. The conductor was Marin Alsop who was the Jury Chairperson of the Van Cllibrn Competition, held in the US in June 2022.
Time has passed quickly. The NOSPR's Japan tour started on September 7. They were holding the 11 concerts in 13days and Hayato played 'Chopin's Piano Concerto No1' eleven times. The piece of soloist encore was changed at every concert by his idea. September 19th was the final day of their Japan tour. The final concert was held at kenmin Hall in Yokohama. I was able to listen to Hayato's Chopin: Piano Concelto No1 in the same space at last! I was moved by his beautiful sound heartily. That day he played 'Candide' with the orchestra as the soloist encore because of his respect to Marin who was Bernstein's favorite pupil. Also he played ' I Got Rhithm' in response to big standing ovation.
I feel his performance has progressed and much more excellent than at the Chopin Competition in 2021. He is still growing as the worldwide borderlless pianist.

    "Piano is Hayato's mother tongue."
This is a comment by a person who watched Hayato do a surprise improvisational piano duo performance with Makoto Ozone, a world-famous jazz pianist and his idol, at Blue Note Tokyo.
(Please refer to Hayato's 2022-6-21 tweet - there is footage in which Mr. Ozone invited him from the audience to the stage. Hayato was enjoying Mr. Ozone's jazz session as an audience that day. Mr. Ozone and Hayato played the improvisational part of Chick Corea's "La Fiesta." According to a person who heard their conversation, Hayato said, "I do not know this piece in detail." And the performance was pretty nice, as you see from the short footage.)
I want to thank him for choosing to be a professional pianist/musician from the bottom of my heart. Born to a mother who is a piano teacher, he was already touching the keyboard when he was 18 months old, according to local TV news aired in 2018 when he won the Grand Prix at Japan's largest piano competition. He also mentioned he would play the piano instead of crying/shouting (in a TV program featuring him before the Chopin competition). Expressing emotions in piano/music is so natural to him.
Every time I come back to this video, I'm amazed that so many people have been impressed by his pure soul, inspired by his free spirit in addition to his virtuosity, and that number is ever-growing! Thank you, Hayato, for filling my life with your beautiful music.

I know you're not a huge fan of hayato from reading your comments. Despite not adhering to traditional Chopin playing (according to your comments, again) his performances are always exciting and free spirited, and that's what i love about him. Plus he is indirectly introducing younger people to the world of Chopin due to his TH-cam following, which i think is amazing.
Im not sure if he will be a finalist, but I already applaud him for making this far. Even if he does get knocked out, his unique musical voice has been heard worldwide :)
-Sincerely, a non-musician who fell with classical music in general.
Everyone in this competition is a wonderful pianist and musician, but from the few videos i watched, I liked the performances of the Japanese Pianists the most. Aside from Hayato, Tomoharu Ushida was also amazing. He made the Yamaha Piano absolutely sing ♥️ Unfortunately, he did not pass :(

It's true. But many does it in their playing without showing it on their faces. Most of us not only listen but mostly look. Pianists without face expression are considered less sensitive and I don't understand why. I have nothing against face expression as I myself cannot control it. But I strongly ask everyone to hear, with eyes closed.
