Hot hatch or Warm hatch? This car is a Hot Hatch in my opinion. I was lucky enough to own the original Mk 1 Golf GTi back in the day and currently own an Up Gti in white. The up shares the same driving spirit as the original so well done to VW for going back to its hot hatch roots. It's a modern take on that old school classic, light weight, manual gearbox and enough power going through the front wheels without to much torque steer. My orignal Golf GTi was the last of the Mk 1 breed, with a 1.8 litre engine producing 112 bhp, it was called The Campaign Model, registered in the UK in the early half of 1984. As far as I'm concerned, any car marketed as a Hot Hatch must at least be producing more than the original formula which was 110 bhp. The up has more than this. If you want a warm hatch then try the Beats version of the Up which has less than 110 at 90 bhp, the Kia Placanta GT line at 99 bhp Etc. Motoring journalists nowadays are use to driving cars with 300bhp plus like Type R Civic's, VW Golf R's and Renault Megane's etc, which are no longer Hot Hatches but are now Hyper Hatches or Super Hatches! Stop calling these cars Hot Hatches! They are pumped up versions of the orignal model that it's based from. The Golf GTi is a perfect example. You have the Golf GTi which is classed as a Hot Hatchback but the other versions have gone beyond. Golf R, Golf Clubsport, Golf TCR are all hotter versions than the GTi, they are great cars, they are Hyperhatches or Superhatches! They are great cars but have gone beyond what is required to be considered a Hot Hatch, Four wheel drive, Torque Vectoring, Paddle Shift Gearboxes, different buttons for Race Modes and Suspension Settings etc. These cars are designed for the track while being road legal while the Up Gti was designed specifically for the road! You don't need 200 bhp plus to have fun, think of the orignal Mazda MX-5, that didn't have a lot of horsepower but wipes the floor with its rivals for sheer handling and fun! My point is that the fond memories I have of the orignal Mk 1 Golf comes through in driving the GTi Up in a modern way, It puts a smile on my face when I drive it and is quicker in the real world than the paper figures suggests, I believe not many will be made and will be a cult classic in the future like the orignal Mk 1. As for fake sounds? It's not entirely fake, the sound is actually coming from the intake which is digitally amplified into the cabin since the engine noise is rather quiet. No doubt there are faster hot Hatches than the Up but how fast do you need to be going in those cars before you feel like your having fun? You need a track to really exploit the limits of the hyper Hatches where as in the Up, all the performance is accessible. The Up Gti is a hot hatch in an old school sort of way where fun is more important on the road than outright speed and cornering ability as with the Hyper hatches of today.
Very good comment. I agree entirely about what you say. A lot of drivers seem dismissive if a car doesn’t have tons of power, but it’s more likely an ego thing and impatience on the roads unfortunately these days. Macho attitudes together the badge on the front, determined to have more power than the next man. Its pathetic. Ive driven powerful cars and once you get to the limit, then what ? Too many cameras and people with dash cams recording everyone and reporting them now to take risks on the roads.
@@oddities-whatnot Thankyou for your comment and sorry about the late reply. I agree with what you wrote, It's all about Badge Snobbery and Engine Power with todays Oinks who drive their cars to prove a pathetic point that their car is somehow better than the next man. How fast do you need to being going before you feel the fun factor? Your point is spot on, Then what? I believe the mindset is that the Up GTI is a relatively cheap car to buy and own so these drivers with their BMW's M's, Audi RS's etc don't like being upstaged by anything smaller or cheaper than what they are driving and will do anything at any cost to get in front of you to prove how dumb they have become falling into that mindset. Don't they realise the Up Driver is going about their daily business enjoying the accessible performance and fun factor within legal limits while these hyperhatch drivers need to break the law to access the performance of their cars. If I owned a hyperhatch, What have I got to prove against a car with a 1ltr, 3 cyl engine with half the power and half the cost? Pathetic Idiots and there's plenty of them out there unfortunately. I love the hyperhatches, I'd be down Santa Pod on occasions to drag race the thing so it can stretch its limbs so to speak, but to race them on a public road against cars that are in the class segments below is a case of, Little Man Syndrome in my opinion. Like you, I driven powerful cars near their limits, curious? yes, having fun? not really, once the limits have been reached. THEN WHAT? Your so on point with that! Can a hyperhatch provide fun at the legal limits? Can a Porsche or Aston Martin provide fun at legal limits? Can a Ferrari or Maclaren provide fun at legal limits? Great cars but they are all high end machines with performance and abilities that really need an autobahn or race track to exploit what they were designed to do. I love these cars but I feel they are wasted on British roads.
@GinGER Disk brakes aren't bad at all if the main braking power comes from the front. Drum brakes don't lack in braking power. They just heat up faster
Would not sell seeing you can tune this car to 150hp already with a remap. A 160hp r tho I would buy instantly. No 4motion needed. It would take away the character of the car. Just the traction cobtrol should be abled to turn off in the R.
JBS Tuning in Chesterfield, here in the Uk, can safely increase that hp to just over 140hp, by just changing the ECU software. I had my Gti remapped by them in September 2019, and its now producing 143.2hp. That hp increase makes a big difference
Tiny cars don't do that well in the US normally. Also, VW is probably trying to maintain a certain image/cachet and this might be too inexpensive (cf. Audi, Mercedes, and BMW not selling their least expensive model and/or 'bargain' options on other models).
Why the fCK would you drive a economic car if gasoline in US is basically for free compared to The Netherlands. Long time ago when I was digging the 350Z nissan. Found out all teenagers drove these things in the USA, lets say; the ones on that forum. This is the contrast between countries. Here you need to have a VERY good job to afford a car like that. Taxes and stuff.. We get screwed by the gasprices here, and over there you're loser if you drive less than 6 cilinders.
I have the new e-Up! and it's pretty comparable with this gti. It's got the sporty bumpers, 16" rims, and the interior is pretty much the same but every red touch is blue. It's got even stiffer suspension but that's because it's about 300kg heavier. Yeah, you got more torque and it's always instant, but you miss the sound of the engine and the really nice manual gearbox. I guess it's a give and take but nevertheless I love both and I think Vw did a great job with the Up! range. Tbh they should push it more with advertising because I feel like most people don't even know this exists.
@@michaelmike4304 The “C” shaped LEDs are actually the daytime running lights. They look cool but with the from the factory the headlight bulbs are much much warmer than the LEDs.
