Oh my God, I watched whole match from begining till the end and it's just confirmed why i love tennis so much and why i am big fan of this sport and especially of this Ukrainian girl Elina Svitolina😍 what a match...! HUGE performance from Svitolina. Stevens at her best looks almost invincible but Svitolina had everything. Serves, volleys, low unforced, change of direction, passing shots, good power on her strokes and amazing stamina, both mental and physical. Enjoy it Svitolina, you deserve it 100%. Great final.
Those highlight points are superb. Tennis at its best !
Svitolina can hopefully build on this performance and do well at the slams in 2019.

I was at Wimbledon this year and was pleasantly surprised to see Sloane at the gift shop. I said hi and she was very cold

Svitolina was definitely a lot more aggressive in her play after the first set. Hopefully she can play like that more often next year

Stephens has the better tennis on her side but Svitolina was much much better in mentality and focus. Svitolina deserved to win this match. It was areally good match.

That word, “deserved.” No one deserved anything. Both had drive, focus, and a positive mental attitude. They both competed well and this is the outcome. I enjoyed these two competitors. What a match it was! Good stuff!
Not just mentality. It's actually that Sloane got exhausted. She needs to improve her stamina too.
Irgen Dwer - I agree with both of your statements 💯. If Sloane could play her “good” tennis more often, she might just be the top player in the WTA. But she seems to drift in and out, and her opponents usually have a chance of climbing back into the match if they can keep fighting and not get down on themselves. Svitolina is just the kindof opponent that Sloane has trouble putting away (Halep is another). Those defensive players that make her work so hard for each point. Svitolina waited out the storm, then fought through for a tough win. Fun match to watch with such contrasting styles.
@@dukeon Yes, Stephens is somehow disappointed/surprised when a good ball comes back and in these situations she often drops her advantage and allows the opponent to come back.

Sloan did great in the first set....although she lost her rhythm towards the end. Second place isn’t bad. Perhaps next time!
NevadaFederalBites - you’re right, Sloane was definitely on a different level in that first set. Svitolina doesn’t have any major weapons, she’s just pretty good at everything but not great. Except her quickness and her tenacity. Sloane’s level just dropped to her opponent’d once again, and instead of putting it away she let Elina hang around and get momentum. Almost seemed like watching two different matches really. And yeah they can both be proud of getting to the finals :)
Justin Sias I totally agree. In observance of how she handles stress, there are times when it seems she buckled under pressure and the rotors start to pile up. Great way to cap off the year though....she’ll do great in the next year for sure!
Good to see the aggressor win on such a slow court. For years, Svitolina was hot-headed and Stephens unmotivated, but both seem to be maturing well.
Good quality match to end the season.

I wasn't a fan of her passive play .But she pulled it off coz of her consistency and perseverance.She ran after every ball and tried to make shots.Sloan was tough too.In the end Svitolina prevailed.Hatts of to both of them👍👍👍👍👍.

Sloane was just not in her best shape and lost her rhythm in the 2nd and 3rd set. Over all a great week though.
On the other hand, Elina did a terrific job on redirecting her game play and had a calm mind to navigate herself to the victory. Great job !! Congrat to the both~~
I think Svitolina just outplayed her, nothing to do with Sloane not being "in shape". She was fit at this tournament and moving as well as she ever has been.

With Sloane's physical agility, it seems to shock me when she gets worn out in 3rd sets. Nonetheless, congrats to Svito!
Paris Milan I feel that Sloane is not very strong with mental toughness. She can play great and she’s in great shape but she has too many ups and downs and that could be attributed to what’s going on in her head at the time.
17sunnyhour They only made it to the finals of her tournament after her grand slam win it to the semi finals in the next tournament after that. She didn’t do well in the finals which could be attributable in part to her injury. I feel she’ll come back next year very strong and dominant the field.

I love that Elina went 5-0 in her matches to win the trophy. It felt super weird when Aga in 2015 and Dominika in 2016 went 3-2 to win a tournament. That's not a good win-loss record.
Yeah Kerber should have won it in 2016...she had a perfect record in the group matches unfortunately she didn't play well in the final.
Have to go 7 and 0 in slams. Can she do it? Time will tell.
KarlEuro89 3-2 May not appear to be a good win loss record but that’s the way the tournament is set up. So it shouldn’t take away from anyone’s accomplishment. That’s like saying someone who wins a match 7-6, 0-6, 7-6 really got outplayed, but that’s the way tennis is.

Doubt it. Her GS play is the worst compared to all other tournaments. Wozniacki at least made it to multiple finals before she won one, Svitolina consistently loses early at the slams while doing well at lower level tournaments

People trying to discredit Elina, but this was a spectacular display of aggressive tennis. If she continues playing like this then she's going to be #1 at some point next year!
It feels to me like Svitolina puts too much effort into hitting a ball. She is always jumping, unlike Stephens whose shots are ultra smooth. If she could improve her footwork, she can be one of the great players.
But great grit and determination from her and congrats to both girls.

Two of the more likeable players...wanted sloane but happy for elina for her victory. They both had best and 2nd best run...beating all the players previous to their meeting.

Congrats to both. They both have very similar games. Svitolina just needs to have her mental game on in the major gs. Same with Stephens. Yes, Stephens does have a gs title but needs to improve her mental game.

Tennis is a sport in which women's side is more interesting than men's. The men I think have outgrown the size of the court. It's all power serves. One shot each point. The women have longer rallies and have to rely on more of a variety of skill.
What men's tour are you watching? It definitely is not all about power serving. I don't see Isner at #1. The men's tour is overtaken by baseliners with the same guys usually winning everything. Courts are slower meaning only the baseliner style can win.
The women are more interesting because more players actually have a chance to win. It's not boringly predictable. And every player in the top 10, save for Kasatkina, has at least won a GS or a PM/P5 title.
What a great tournament between these two tennis champions! These two are far stronger and artful in playing tennis than the one, Osaka Naomi, whom the Japanese fans are crazy about at this mement. I look forward to the tennis matches between these three palyers in the new year, 2019, throughout the whole year.
I don't know why I picked her to win this tournament. My predictions are almost never right when their ranking is outside the top 5. I don't know her or her game well, but from her very first match, she seemed hungry - starving for a big win - and 2nd place wasn't an option. She played inspired tennis and I'm happy for her win. Also, gotta hand it to the ladies. This was a helluva tournament. 2019 should be a banner year for women's tennis.
Damn Sloane I wanted u to win as u r more complete player with defense n offense combo but Congo elina. She played amazing! Thankfully courts r faster next year in china so it will not favour specific players . Atleast be neutral! Hope Sloane wins it next year
I think the slow court thing is overemphasized and in the end should not favor any particular pro player who should be able to adjust their game to the various surfaces that they play on.

Sloane is not an offensive player. She actually redirects balls and wins with placement and precision when playing offensive players. So if the courts were faster it would favour attacking players like Kvitova and Osaka than Sloane

Sloane is performing in Back to Back Tournaments. Its impossible to keep up the intensity tournament after tournament!
Sloan was outmatched by quickness & pure will to win! Elina was patient and waited for her game to arrive while Stephens got weaker trying to use too much power in the 1st set, women need to learn from Elina that you must conserve energy & be patient to stay in rhythm the whole game. Too many young players try to immolate Serena but aren't built to play like her, that's why you must balance your game & know when to use the extra power and not outplay yourself like Osaka does lately. So far from what I've seen, Naomi Osaka has beeen her own worst enemy on the court by not having the patience she once had, she tries too hard on the baseline & won't come to the net like Elina does when needed. The next queen of the court will play more like Elina does with balance + focus= patience to win!
Two extremely fast movers who run down everything, on a slow indoor court! I was wondering how many hours this match might go, and sure enough we got a grueling, blue-collar, three set sendoff to the 2018 season. I thought Sloane was gonna make quick work of things the way she started, almost effortlessly bossing Elina around the court in the first set. But if Sloane has a weakness it’s finishing off opponents. I don’t know why but she just lets up a bit and still seems to lack that killer instinct at times (think of the French Open finals and Montreal finals, both times she led Halep but ended up losing). Svitolina on the other hand is scrappy, maybe her game isn’t beautiful to watch like Stephens, but she’s stubborn AF and if she doesn’t get knocked out of a tournament early (that’s HER weakness), then she’s extremely tough to overcome in a Final. Congrats to two great athletes! I’m happy for both that they reached the last match, it’s too bad only one could win it. I like both ladies very much, they’re not prima donnas and they have respect for the game and for their opponents. Good job, Sloane 🇺🇸, congratulations Elina 🇺🇦!!!
