I love how you and Garrett (Ginner) are both just having this drastic changes in your lives and routines without being afraid of looking back. I admire that because I relate to that as well. Keep killing it!
I havent sat down and watched one of your videos in years. When i was watching, you inspired me so much through my skateboarding and i couldnt get enough of your content. Its been a while but i love this content too
I’ll watch anything you have to share. I started watching you for your skateboarding and stayed this long and I’m just happy to see your journey and living life
To be honest, you seem lost, I can relate, having kids changes your world view fast. The health and fitness thing is great, but might be another a procrastination for being lost. Skating not for the camera but for yourself might be something you need to re-learn, that will cover the fitness and you can truly look inward for your goals/life. You don't need to spend an hour and a half a day working out to be fit enough to chase a toddler/child around. I've never whilst being a parent had the option/desire to just meander around town daily with my thoughts, maybe you're looking too hard for that next thing, causing it to be manufactured rather than a genuine purpose? Maybe reading some of the classic stoicism philosophers would open up new ways of thinking for you? Might help, or at the very least you will see us humans have been dealing with these same moments in life for thousands of years. Good luck!
But he does seem to be spending most of him time (in this 17 min video idk what his actually daily life looks like) wondering around aimlessly with no real purpose
@AP-zq6hv yeah working out is fine. But I got the vibe from his video it's an escape more than a need. Dude will be more than fit enough for kids by just doing the thing he enjoys, skating. If he's over that, and wants to do gym, that's also fine. I just don't get the vibe that his heart is really in it.
Fully agreed with your Lost statement - even though John is dope, I can see several unaddressed behavioral flaws at play here that most people typically overcome at an earlier age through professional/corporate avenues. Parkinson's Law is one of them. The fact that John has not had to have a "typical" job in about a decade is both a blessing and a curse. Once you wake up and realize you are heading to mid-30s without dominating an openly monetizable, transferable and, most importantly, sustainable skillset it can play tricks with your mind. Especially with mental health challenges present. Besides depression, I also see prominent ADHD behaviors in John. My best advice to anyone in his shoes is very simple. Less talk. More Action, and if possible, No Talk, and ALL Action (yes, you can still film a video without talking and it can do wonders from an algorithm perspective) Overexplaining to people your goals and every decision just sets the scenario up for further overexplaining... all time thieves and detractors from the goal itself. Similar with the work out logic shared in the earlier comment. Still wish him and anyone else going through this much success. Love you all.
Man, you’re on the right path for sure! Skateboarding or not, I think many of us viewers like you because of your mindset and personality. You keep up the good work! It’s great to see another dad , in tune with his family and out in the world doing the right things! Progress Daily John, much love!
I think you've pushed yourself so hard for so many years into a glass ceiling and now have time to figure out who you really are and what's important. Good on you for growing, John.
Love how real you are bro. I recently got laid off and my life is taking a crazy turn as far as day to day and where I’m heading. Been watching since like a freshman in high school and I come back and fourth but the videos still make me reminisce.(I’m 26 for context) Glad you’re doing things for yourself and taking care of your body because that’s the main part of your future.
Long time viewer here. I'm happy you are going after what makes sense for you, and also that you are not (seemingly) afraid to change. But I can't help the fact to relate to some things you say, because I've also been/(am) there (34y), which is the logic of relating performance in life to happiness. Meaning, the need of control a lot of aspects of the routine to make "the best decisions", which will lead to the "best results", etc. It's an optimization that is impossible to hold for too long once it goes, in part, against how humans function. Leads to perfectionism, burnout and the sense of underachieving. And of course it doesn't mean it is the only place where one can find happiness. I'm also not saying you are like this or in this position exactly, I don't know you. But judging by what I've seen in your videos over the years and the fact I resonate with things similarly, it looks like that modus operandi. If it is the case, it's a bit dangerous. Therapy helped me a lot.
Good luck with your journey. A piece of advice: find the temperature that your flame can burn the longest. No point in keeping a very regimented schedule to the point where you feel bad and can't hop back into your groove when you do deviate. Those deviations are normal. Don't burn bright and short, but also don't burn dim and forever. Good luck.
Exactly my motto when it comes to sport. I see too much people starting something too hard for them with a rythm that's not sustainable and they burn out pretty fast.
Thank you for this video John. This is why I’m subscribed. Not only because of the skateboarding, the art, etc. but because you’re just a person going though changes like most of us and I have always enjoyed the way you portray things happening around you
I have the exact same relationship with time down to the haircut example. I’ll procrastinate walking the 3 blocks to the barber shop for 6 months sometimes because “the 1 hour spent isn’t getting me any closer to my overall goals”. I’ll finally get around to it by telling myself I’ll be more focused and produce better work if my shaggy bangs are snipped out of the way.
I’ve been a long time watcher of your channel. Discovering your channel in my most formative years starting in middle school. Thanks for making content brother. I had the pleasure of going and skating your indoor park when it was open and that was really cool, I’ve been around for all the eras of this channel and it’s been a fun ride. I know it’s weird bc I’m just some stranger in the comment section but your content most definitely inspired me growing up. Be safe and I know you’ll figure things out.
this vlog was such a blast of nostalgia for me from when you were living in LB, thank you for being you john and keep posting and going! a lot of people are here for you and not just skating stuff
Hi, New John. This is Old Derek, been here awhile but always love seeing the new stuff and progress you make in whatever you do. Also sending good vibes to you and family. Watched S.Peachy vid and that's a shitty situation so sending love that way. also.. Keep killing it!
Just watched your birdhouse part from 10 years ago and I was blown away. I just wanna say you are a legend and I am happy to see you growing and evolving. Love the family vlogs and honest raw content. 🙌
I used to watch all your Skateboarding videos a couple years ago. Admittedly I haven't watch any for a while but I've been in the same headspace lately, similar to how you have described in your last few videos but with my own experiances. Really flat and unfulfilled. It's incredible, I was looking up Ikigai and TH-cam recommended your videos - effectively re-introducing me to your channel. Peace and thanks for sharing your journey
I remember buying buying the OG progress daily white tee just the words in a rectangle stoked to see this next chapter of your life. Yours and garret ginner content is a nice change of pace
Very inspiring watching you in this transition! I think many can relate like myself being in their 30s starting over. Hope you keep sharing and inspiring!
Love the video! I'm really happy you decided to go with what feels right for you. It kind of reminded me of Garret leaving LA. Hope you can post more often-I love your videos!
Love you videos and vlogs. I hope it goes really well and you find new clarity. Guttered there isnt any skateboarding material. However i know your feels. I left skating to join the army and do other various life choices. Now at 37 im a tradesman and skating has gave me new insight. Appreciate you bro
John, i started watching your videos around 2017 when you were thick into the skateboarding scene with Ride and all the usual suspects. Through high school your content provided something that allowed me to see how inspiring life is beyond the boringness of my teen years, and now, after all these years i still look for you on youtube. You’ve been able to teach so many people so many things, not just about skating, you show your spirit in every video. i’ve always respected and looked up to you as someone who “made it” in terms of being a good person and staying resilient. Your video on depression really resonated with me because i’ve also just recently overcome my own depression. Mindset and fitness are huge factors but at the end of the day all it takes is giving your best effort, in the moment, everytime. Much love, Jacob.
You should do some research into Nick Bare and his company Bare Performance Nutrition. He lives and is based in Austin, and I believe he aligns with a lot of your goals and future goals. They do a good amount of stuff with other creators, and it’d be awesome to see you guys do something together!
Dude! You’re just progressing. Once you master a skill, it’s only natural to want to move on. I spent 20 years in mma, competed, and had my own gym for 10 years. Eventually I was burnt out! I had to let it all burn and walk away. I was 36. I had my first kid at 31 and now Im 37 with 4. My wife and I started two small hair salons a few years back and they do very well so I’m a stay at home dad on are 7 acre farm. It’s wild, cause I never thought 10 years ago I would be where I am. Adding new things on and letting old things go is just progress. Shit that matters will come back around. I quit skating in my 20’s and now my 4 girls have a mini ramp out back, of course I built 10 skateboards and bust my ass! But building a family is the ultimate thing, so now enjoy it, everything else’s is a distraction or a task to make it work. Great channel!
lovely to hear you are finding pleasure in calisthenics, and to get more out of this session you should break it up in to sessions: Chest and back + backflips and legs. Have fun!
I felt you on this path as you left your apartment with the rooftop view between your skatepark set ups. Something about this you now was trying to happen with those changes back then I feel. Life sometimes will take 3-5 years to have us find ourselves where we need to be it should seem. I'm starting my life over at 25 after having it blow out at 20 and 15 seeing you here and there along the way. Time and growth as they cycle are strange to say very little. You seem far closer to yourself as you were back then in some very healthy ways I feel, you seem like your moving forward with yourself in a better direction then you've had, like you've taken a large step back from yourself to mentally look at things. Know that when you build up things in your mind they are like knots that you tie thoughts to like ropes if you tie things down in the wrong ways you have to work on mentally addressing it on some levels I feel. If too many negative things get tied up around things and then maybe the idea of pushing and pushing like with skating needs to be stepped back from not because that isn't a honed good useful skill but because your life's growth needs to happen differently now. Your spirit has taken your soul through lots of pushing now maybe your balance has lots of push and could use some other parts to be worked with more? idk. maybe my heads far up my ass. I found that at times when I pushed to much for to long I needed to learn how to find the separation behind what my body in its state is doing/saying and how I am actually feeling about things. You push to hard you won't hear yourself or see yourself, that's why anger isn't a good thing to pull from when your tired say, you'll fuck up more often times and create negative associations. maybe when you left that place with the balcony it was the start of you learning about pushing yourself? you seem to still be in the process of trying to take a step back but really pushing still too only focused around health. Maybe you should try to address why you got into pushing yourself with skating so much and work on those feelings and there meaning and where there from and what that should mean to you now that you know more. You sound like your in the process getting control of life when you talk about haircuts and the gym taking so long and thinking about gas stops and money like your trying to get control over your life again in a more real way that's true to you and how you really feel about it... control and understanding mix well with life and feelings. glad to see you searching for more direction coming through things! happy to see your life still in good standings. You're still a really lucky guy lol, well done.
Hey man first time comment I think, I've been watching your vids since the start. I remember you and Sam hanging out and you having that baby clothing company. I also have got married and had a daughter and know exactly what it's like to change your career drastically and struggle with mental health at the same time. So this video really spoke to me. Thanks man.
John! Excited for you to be around family with your daughter. Also, can I buy you a reusable water bottle? Please! lol Keep moving forward and keeping doing the things you find fulfilling.
Quitting skating? I just bought your pro fingerboard in the store! Haha, stay genuine and best luck with all your ventures! For what it’s worth my favorite project you did was give your homies from the east your channel for a year or so, wish they would’ve continued.
I dig this no structure just John talking about his day and life style of video. I have a hard time with the little stuff too like car washes or cancelling stuff. It just feels so monotonous and I have other things I need to do so the little stuff always gets pushed to the back burner so it's nice to know other people are similar. It probably won't make you the most money, but I hope you get the chance to just keep making what you want to make and enjoy.
Calisthenics is the best! I love it so much! Good to see you doing what you love and taking care of business! Love to see it 💪🏾 Also, love Derek from Simmnett nutrition! Even though I don’t eat cooked food, I love watching his videos!
Be careful with yours intentions to change everything at once, prepare plan b, c and d. I had some issues with my mental health pretty close to yours, and we the same age. Good luck and keep doing what you need to do! I'm shure that you l'l overcome!
I am starting my own website for fan art designs to do with in jokes for films / tv / musical theatre and stuff to do with my job / career I am doing it for the fun and joy I get for making them I always feel you inspire me to continue doing what I love and always to push forward through obstacles that come along
Must be nice to be able to pay for a car wash, hair cut, and go out to lunch on a random day. I literally can’t afford to do any of that since having kids. 😂 but they are worth it. Good luck in Texas bro… You seem very determined! Keep it up. Having family around to help with the kiddo is huge. That would be a dream for us. Never forget how fortunate you are. Always loved your videos. The skating was just a bonus.
I love the vlog content! You and Garrett Ginner have moved from that only skate content to lifestyle content and I love it, been watching for a long time but I kinda got sick of watching skateboarding so much. So this is awesome plus I’m an artist so I like the new art content as well, you should do more art content! Like you drawing etc 🔥 much love!
Love Simnett! It's so cool to know that you watch his content. If you share what you're eating, it will inspire people. You don't have to be a nutritionist or expert to share vegan meals and your lifestyle. The T. Colin Campbell plant-based certificate is a great course for learning more about plant-based nutrition. You're at the beginning of a new chapter, and it's exciting. I know it can feel daunting, but trust the process. Much love.
We are still out here. We can all relate to life transitions. I am about to retire from 30 years of Paratrooping. Now it is time to get the next chapter going.
I found your channel back when I was really into calisthenics, rock climbing, and eating well. At the time I was watching vegan athletes like Simnett (still do), and a bunch of rock climbing content. As an ex skater, I found your channel very relatable, motivating, and entertaining as well. It makes sense to me that you're going down this path. At 32, and post-pandemic, I have fallen off the fitness wagon. Still at a healthy weight (thanks to my vegan diet, and regularly cycling) but no where near as strong as I was 5 years ago. I'm excited to watch your journey and I hope it motivates me to exercise regularly again!
Whats up John, been here for years and thoroughly enjoyed all the skating. Its crazy you're critiquing your pistol squats! I've been working out for almost 20 years and I don't have pistol squats at all! So kudos to you my friend. I would also recommend weightlifting. Calisthenics are great and they really build strength and mobility through so much range of motion. However, weightlifting puts a load on the muscles like nothing else could and it's amazing for your nervous system as well. And there's no need to quit one to do the other, you can do both! Lastly, I'm curious, have you ever read the bible at all or had an "organized religious" practice? Reading the bible, learning about God, trusting and listening to him has been critical in my own life. God bless dude, looking forward to more updates!
No way! 30’s I had two careers and 4 kids. I had to start over twice. Life is a wild ride my friend. Age is a number, mileage is the wear and tear on the vehicle.
@@chrisxshockya but you can still be young if you live to be 90 lmao… that’s 3 lifetimes if 30 is “old” 😂 I’m 27 & feel almost better than ever. I’ve been through hell & back but that’s life. We all have lol
@@zpsycho7608 your 12, your still at the age you think “Bring me the Horizon” is a good band. In a few years you’ll grow up and realize 30 isn’t old in the scheme of things and laugh that you listened bring me the horizon
I kind of get we’re your coming from going through some change to keep doing you and thanks fo the distraction time to just go to Tech to let your mind not think about anything else keep up the good work John
Hey, you're back in my hood! Welcome back to Carrollton! I think my version of what you're going through was discovering triathlons in my mid 30s. My skateboard just stares at me from it's hanger on the wall. Kid #3 on the way in December.
John family is everything we love you and buddy don't panic and Jennie AKA the swearing nanna lol needs a family mate try a daily vlog ?? we will watch whatever works buddy we will support ya im on my 3rd life shuffle roll with the punches cos you have something much richer a WIFE AND A CHILD priceless thx barry lol
I started skating around septemper 23,2023 before I turned 33 and I skated like a 15 year old still with kickflips and everything, and it's been a lot of information to progress again and physical effort so I stopped focusing on basic workouts and now it seems really daunting to give it a go again... I feel lazy lol. I also like doing this thing called like an elbow lever, and then I get into a modified tucked planche and kick out my legs, and before I know it I'm doing a weird handstand! If I have a wall to help me I can get into some vertical pushups too.
I was in the military and then I took 10 years off to be a fuck head and at the age 39 I moved back to SW PA and started farming. 8 years later and Im still farming, married, have my own small farm on a couple acres and I haven't been a fuck head for about a decade now. If I can do it quite literally anybody can do it😅
What park is that at the 13:40 mark? I live in the area and take my kids for walks at various parks and would love to take them there (looks like a good walking park).
as a skateboarder I'm surprised that you have the ankle mobility to do pistol squats. I can do them really well on my right leg, but when I try the left my ankle doesn't bend far enough and so my heel peels off the floor or I fall backward. I've destroyed my left ankle about 1000 times and it just doesn't move the same anymore.
This felt like your vlogs from back in 2015, love it man. We all follow you for being you, don’t overthink it - just be you!
I love how you and Garrett (Ginner) are both just having this drastic changes in your lives and routines without being afraid of looking back.
I admire that because I relate to that as well. Keep killing it!
John thank you for posting. This video reminds me of your first style of vlogs. This was great to watch!
I havent sat down and watched one of your videos in years. When i was watching, you inspired me so much through my skateboarding and i couldnt get enough of your content. Its been a while but i love this content too
I’ll watch anything you have to share. I started watching you for your skateboarding and stayed this long and I’m just happy to see your journey and living life
I started new career, new baby, and working out at age 30. Turning 40 next month. Working out was the best decision I ever made. Get fit, stay fit.

mfs cant even workout anymore 😭😭😭
I go to the gym 5-6 days a week what's wrong with working out it's good for both ur mind and body
But he does seem to be spending most of him time (in this 17 min video idk what his actually daily life looks like) wondering around aimlessly with no real purpose

You seem so such more happy, love to see the work 💪
FPV bro! I needed to get away from skateboarding and I started FPV... It's so similar to skateboarding, but also so different!
Been watching you since high school 8 years ago crazy I’m 24 now and seeing how different both of are lives are but much love keep killing it 🎉

Hey I just turned 33 and I'm rebuilding my life too...except I've never been a professional skateboarder or had a huge youtube following.
Enjoyed this video John liking this new content

John keep up the great work
just got back from work and im grateful for this video!
Hey man first time comment I think, I've been watching your vids since the start. I remember you and Sam hanging out and you having that baby clothing company.
I also have got married and had a daughter and know exactly what it's like to change your career drastically and struggle with mental health at the same time. So this video really spoke to me. Thanks man.
John I’m 29 ups driver with 2 kids. You’re not rebuilding, just starting a new chapter. Much love!
John! Excited for you to be around family with your daughter.
Also, can I buy you a reusable water bottle? Please! lol
Keep moving forward and keeping doing the things you find fulfilling.
Quitting skating? I just bought your pro fingerboard in the store! Haha, stay genuine and best luck with all your ventures!
For what it’s worth my favorite project you did was give your homies from the east your channel for a year or so, wish they would’ve continued.
This was great, thank you. I am in a weirdly same place right now but maybe less healthy. I might hop on your train here.
I dig this no structure just John talking about his day and life style of video. I have a hard time with the little stuff too like car washes or cancelling stuff. It just feels so monotonous and I have other things I need to do so the little stuff always gets pushed to the back burner so it's nice to know other people are similar.
It probably won't make you the most money, but I hope you get the chance to just keep making what you want to make and enjoy.
hello, greetings from Finland 😎
Calisthenics is the best! I love it so much! Good to see you doing what you love and taking care of business! Love to see it 💪🏾
Also, love Derek from Simmnett nutrition! Even though I don’t eat cooked food, I love watching his videos!
This is real, get it John! Glad you're doing you!
Lowkey reminds me of your Ohio vlogs from way back when, glad to see you and your family doing well😁
Be careful with yours intentions to change everything at once, prepare plan b, c and d. I had some issues with my mental health pretty close to yours, and we the same age. Good luck and keep doing what you need to do! I'm shure that you l'l overcome!
Always loved your discipline. Keep at it. Heart❤
I am starting my own website for fan art designs to do with in jokes for films / tv / musical theatre and stuff to do with my job / career
I am doing it for the fun and joy I get for making them
I always feel you inspire me to continue doing what I love and always to push forward through obstacles that come along
Love it! Thanks for sharing!
You Got This!
John got the og cut!!! Waiting for him to get the blond back, and then we will be back fr
Welcome back to DFW John!! I work in Deep Ellum, I hope we can connect one day.
Much love.
Can’t wait until you get into this rings! 🙏🙏🙏
Excellent video , keep it up your life is interesting and I’m enjoying the journey , peace ✌️
This goes in line perfectly with progress daily. I feel like change is inevitable. Just kick pushing in other avenues.
That’s awesome love the parkour
You mean “just starting your life” right? Your too young to be rebuilding your life when it’s only just begun at the young age of 30
30 isn't young😂
No way! 30’s I had two careers and 4 kids. I had to start over twice. Life is a wild ride my friend. Age is a number, mileage is the wear and tear on the vehicle.
Was about to write the same thing.
Great video, I had to do the same thing for my wife. It works out.
Hey, you're back in my hood! Welcome back to Carrollton! I think my version of what you're going through was discovering triathlons in my mid 30s. My skateboard just stares at me from it's hanger on the wall. Kid #3 on the way in December.
Touch less car washes are better than the wiper ones!
Safe that ride!
Barry hill goat😂😂😂❤
I love ping pong the animation, I wish more people would talk about it
I started skating around septemper 23,2023 before I turned 33 and I skated like a 15 year old still with kickflips and everything, and it's been a lot of information to progress again and physical effort so I stopped focusing on basic workouts and now it seems really daunting to give it a go again... I feel lazy lol. I also like doing this thing called like an elbow lever, and then I get into a modified tucked planche and kick out my legs, and before I know it I'm doing a weird handstand! If I have a wall to help me I can get into some vertical pushups too.
have you thought of some type of martial arts as a way to check the box of staying active and doing certain movements on your body?
love the content
Bruhhh I saw you at a skate park today but wasn’t sure if it was you or not👍👍
I think you should film a steezy day in the life and film a chill real steezy day in the life since you are so steezy
.......you had 5 brain cells that came up with this sentence.
@@dankburgers really bro ?? 😂
1:57 Yeaaaahhhh John!
love u john
Hi dude
I was in the military and then I took 10 years off to be a fuck head and at the age 39 I moved back to SW PA and started farming. 8 years later and Im still farming, married, have my own small farm on a couple acres and I haven't been a fuck head for about a decade now. If I can do it quite literally anybody can do it😅
Respect
I would bet that within 1 month u will be making some skate content again.
You got diisss, TX sounds lit .
fixed my bell. we back. here's to a new chapter of being human. a happy human.
Calling it right now, John gets jacked 2025
Been here since July 2017
#HillFam
Go fishing bro it’s lit 😊
What park is that at the 13:40 mark? I live in the area and take my kids for walks at various parks and would love to take them there (looks like a good walking park).
as a skateboarder I'm surprised that you have the ankle mobility to do pistol squats. I can do them really well on my right leg, but when I try the left my ankle doesn't bend far enough and so my heel peels off the floor or I fall backward. I've destroyed my left ankle about 1000 times and it just doesn't move the same anymore.
👍👍👍👍
Do a switch side flip next 🫣
Yessirr, calisthenics is good and all but get a gym membership next and some whey protein, lets build some muscle!
Hi dude x3
