- Dead Rising is one of the most ambitious games ever made, but, unlike most games described as "ambitious", it didn't fail to execute; Dead Rising is the only game to ever receive a Metacritic score of 100 (please do not fact check this). This video is equal parts review, critique, analysis, and playthrough.

Fun fact: Larry is the ONLY psychopath in the ENTIRE Dead Rising franchise that doesn't actively attack Frank and he is not initially hostile towards Frank. He will only become hostile and attack Frank if Frank attacks him first.
Also the special forces mini helicopter does have offensive properties it has a small turret mounted to the bottom of it which it will periodically shoot at Frank although it does little to no damage.
Lastly if you survive for 5 days in infinity mode or 10 real life consecutive hours that is when you will unlock the laser sword, not at 7 days. After surviving 7 days however or 14 hours in real life time that is when you unlock Sir Arthurs boxers which is a homage to another Capcom game called Ghosts and Goblins. This is purely cosmetic however and only for bragging rights.
IT IS IMPERATIVE THOUGH TO MAKE SURE YOU DIE AFTER ACHIEVING BOTH 5 AND 7 DAY SURVIVOR RESPECTIVELY AS AFTER GETTING THE ACHIEVEMENT IF YOU QUIT WITHOUT DYING YOU WILL FORFEIT THE REWARDS AND WILL HAVE TO REDO THE ENTIRE 10 AND 14 HOUR PLAYTHROUGH AGAIN.
Same goes in 72 hour mode, if you attain certain achievements that have unlockables make sure to get an ending as the rewards are only given to you after completing the game and starting a new round.
They truly do not make games how they did in the early 2000’s. You got a full game, no DLC, no micro transactions, just a solid story and endless hours of gameplay. Still had some flaws but truly a different experience. A lost one that is..

I enjoyed Dead Island 1, riptide wasnt great. Dead Island has poor story and characters though and gets painfully repetitive imo.

The "clean up, register 6!" moment for some reason sticks with me as much as when I first played RE in '97 and the dogs jumped through the window. This game does an excellent job of hiding some seriously creepy moments under what appears to be a silly, light hearted premise.
I personally love it when you are walking through the mall and mall track 3 plays, i always stop for a moment and just look around at it.
Just feel etheral and so wrong as the place just looks like they need to clear out the zombies for them to reopen the shops
When he says “My store… my .. STYEWORRR”. The way he says store I still say all the time. I just played through the game for the first time in almost 15 years yesterday and I just love that part.
Ive always felt Dead Rising 1 made the perfect zombie experience.
Single player "open world" with countless zombies to kill all while having to deal with the true enemy. People.
Mix that with a complelling serious main story and the absurd goofyness of what being in a zombie apocalypse would actually be like.
The game just hits every note and has a realistic protagonist for the situation. Atleast imo.
Realistic I didn't know homer Simpson was realistic at least season 1

17 years, 17 years i have played this game, bought on same year as release, even just did a new playthrough on PC, and I NEVER knew there was an alternate method to get to the roof besides the elevator. Seem to learn more and more about this game as time goes on.

I lived in an old farm house outside of a small town back when i first played this game. Absolutely amazing. And the atmosphere in my real life made the atmosphere in the game actually hit abit harder as well. This and resident evil games and silent hill games are way better when playing them in old houses with little to no people living close by. Especially when it gets pitch black outside.
Kent is the most ambitious thing Dead Rising has ever done as a franchise, he’s a: tutorial for the camera, has a storyline spanning 3 scoops, slowly becomes a psychopath over time, and has 2 different endings depending on the time you show up (one where Tad is already dead and one where he is saved from zombification)
I love how awkward Frank is when he's talking to others. Its great.
My answer to Brock was to stand on the bottom of the tank, then spam the somersault kick before he could get to the lower segment.
i will be honest i like the fact gunplay is bad if it was too good you would never use the other weapons.

Now are you trying to go for 100% survivors saved run? Then yes, mini chainsaws are pretty much your only viable option bc you don’t have time to fuck around w the fun weapons like the excavator or the weapon cart

Wish they bring back Dead Rising somehow. Either by making a Dead Rising 5 first or making from scratch a "directors cut" of the 4th game and basically making that version the "canon" version while the "OG" released DR4 will just be an in universe film that poorly retells the story of Frank West in Willamette Mall and a good way to poke fun at modern movies misunderstanding the source material (Unless your Marvel).
honestly, i’d put State of Decay up there. being able to enter each building, and loot for supplies felt immersive. being able to upgrade your base and survivor’s stats, the permadeath, everything. love that game. the original 360 version was rough but they made it better w/ the One port.
I’ve just started watching the video and I absolutely love how in depth you are with the details regarding mechanics and plot. Seeing these older games getting this long form in depth reviews is a great thing.
Real talk, The Shotgun in DR1 can clear out crowds of zombies when hip firing and is useful to have.
In DR2, the Shotgun is literally the worst gun, cant hipfire well, has a weird spread and feels like the Gem Blower dmg wise.
Get it as a broomstick and it immediately becomes way better thankfully

Shadow of Rome was probably my favorite game growing up and one of my favorites of all time. So happy to see someone mention it in a Deadrising video. Really wish I can play that game again one day.

Only problem i had with the video was the weird """mysogyny""" tangent. Even as a woman myself i couldnt help but roll my eyes hard hearing that. Especially knowing theres several male survivors you have to carry or "hold their hand" to get to safety or who cant fight for shit. One guy legit crawls until you pick his ass up. As well as there being a fair few female survivors that are a bit of a tough nail. Even Isabelle is a tough girl that clearly can handle her own. Little bit weird you didnt mention that part but whatever
As for the Erotica Photo part, okay you got a point there. Just wish ya mentioned how you could have Frank cross dress in some more revealing clothes. Or how some males in these games can be seen as eye candy as well. Again, strange that wasnt mentioned but whatever
My own tangent aside, i still agree how good this game was and still is for the most part. DR2 has its stumbles as a sequel but im glad it follows up well from this timeless classic
House of the Dead would be the later game on the mount Rushmore of zombie games, for sure.
Great video! Probably the best dr1 retrospective I’ve seen on the platform. Definitely my favourite zombie game closely tied with l4d2. If not in my top 10 favourite games of all time

As someone who's younger than the game, I haven't been able to play it for myself. Nonetheless I loved this review and managed through it to still feel the suspense in the story and game play which is incredibly rare for any review of anything I may bring myself to watch. You're an excellent game reviewer, so much so that I subbed on the first video of you I watched on NFS Carbon. Keep up the outstanding work, I can't wait for the next review, whatever game it may be on (still take time to yourself and to make things good, but that goes without saying).

2 Cutscenes not mentioned/shown in the video that I think are significant/add to the game:: The title cutscene that plays when you stay on the main menu for a minute, and the scene you can find with brad in the process of zombification after the bombs.
Finding Brad after he disappears is a secret.

I played this on the wii as a kid i remember the trailer i was so hyped smacking a zombie with a guitar

I remember buying this game on release, getting home, putting it in the console. My fingers itched to get started on learning the controls. The game loaded up and an hour later I had turned it off pissed off. The game was terrible. I didn't get it. Why was it so hyped? What's the use of loads of zombies on screen when the gameplay was like nothing on the market. I couldn't even read the messages that appeared because I didn't have an HD TV.
A few days went by and I turned it on again, ready to to give it another chance. All of a sudden it clicked. This wasn't like anything else on the market because it wasn't meant to be, it was more simple, less serious. It was a game about getting as many survivors back to base as possible whilst killing off those psychos.
Over the next few days/weeks I learned everything I could about the game; the food combos, the best weapons (which absolutely is the chainsaw), where the survivors were (including the secret ones you don't get told over the radio). It took me much longer than it should've to get the overtime, but just as I thought I was done with the game, there it was, stuff I had never seen before.
I love the Dead Rising series (1, 2 and Off the Record). DR3 and 4 don't count. They are insulting for Dead Rising fans. Missed the point entirely.

I never got to experience this game even though I just know that it would be something that I would love. Watching this video let’s me know that just game was a gem and ahead of its time. Maybe one day I’ll go back and enjoy this game. If you have any experiences with this I would love to hear them. This game just interests me so much.

The only thing I disagree with you on is that guns are useless in this game. Having a shotgun in this game melts bosses health and clears hordes of zombies easily. Frank snaps to the location of any zombie when hip firing so the shotgun is key to this game. Also there’s a hidden shotgun at the start of the game in the entrance plaza

I wish dead rising adds what made off the record great, more zombie damage and while it was such a cheap way to inflate difficulty the boss fights were great like yea it sucks you have to hit and roll out of the way to hit again but it also plays well with the whole "my weapon can break anytime, so do I really want to waste damage and durability by spamming?" like imagine every time you went new game+ the game gets harder so the game keeps you on your toes even if you are lvl 50.
The third person shooter shit gotta go, that part of the newer games not only is ass it's just annoying to get rid of melee shit just to shoot a splitter or a ZAR to insta kill enemies.

Guns aren't practically useless, handguns *are* useless, while shotguns are solid, and the smg/lmg are decent.

Oof. I don't really know what else to say about this one. It didn't turn out the way I wanted. Turns out, longer videos take more work.
EDIT: Okay, 3 months later, I realize what went wrong. In short, the problems mostly came down to a disengaging pace and unfamiliarity with new recording equipment. I'm much happier with my more recent videos.
