I always love watching your videos man, I have learnt a lot from them and so I have a very humble request if you could please make a video how to route all the outboard gear for a hybrid recording setup so like if someone wants to use the outboard gear on the way in to the session like a signal chain and and how we can make different combinations without having to reroute everything from the back , Thank you very much.

One thing that's worth mentioning is how many great DIY 500 series modules are about. If you can put together an IKEA bookshelf, you can make a DIYRE CP5. And once you get the basics, there are so many great options. Building a Neve 33609 or 1176 clone for $400 and elbow grease is a great way to learn the actual circuits.
I love this!!! I’m just now getting into the 500 series stuff and this video has helped me a lot!!!!! That you!!!!! I definitely want the pultec eq! Got to have it!! The regular rack is just too expensive for me. But Audioscape makes a good clone. Trying to wait and being patient is challenging. I know they had some issues with that storm And now moving into a new building. Which I’m glad they were able to get more space.
Hi Warren! apologies if this seems off-topic but what are your thoughts on the Distressor compressor paired with a Neve 1073 spx pre? I know some people recommend tracking vocals with compression, but weary of putting something I cannot reverse on my vocal takes! Just starting out on this recording/mixing thingy!
Cranborne is awesome. I have their interface plus there adat extension rack for a total of 16 channels of 500 series goodness and summing. Cool you brought it up in this video! Cheers
Warren once I said to you: Ah pro tools .... I use studio one. I use studio one till today but now im a perpetual Pro Tools user too. I love the editing with it for prodcasts and moviesynchronisation!
Have 4 Camden 500s with mojo I can either track with them or insert them on a mix bus. The mojo is like having multiple preamps in one! GAP 573 premium and a dbx510 de-esser. That de-esser is incredible for the price. I’m excited to see more videos like this. Super job man!
I used 2 have subscription of a Brit Mag called computer music !! I was astonished at how far more advanced UK seemed to be in music gear and software/hardware !! I put a cool little studios together pretty much for free !! I know some of the VST s were bloated but it taught me a lot !! I could record and it led me to some companies that a couple years later would go onto make great software !! In the US most people would go into a studio in Europe/UK and be amazed !! Seeing some of the analog hardware gear reminded me of this !!
You mentioned squashing the unholy hell out of the acoustic, and then bringing it back up with the make up gain. That's one of my all time favorite sounds for acoustic. The most famous example is "Black Mountain Side" from the first Zeppelin album. I understand that Jimmy Page had some kind of ancient tube powered RCA limiter like radio stations used to have, and that was what he used to get that effect. Stephen Stills did that sound lots of times as well. If you know anything about how to achieve this effect, perhaps you could do a video with some hints on how this is done, and some suggestions on which compressor would work well for this. Lots of people love that sound, and would probably appreciate some help from a seasoned pro such as yourself. Thanks, and Hats off for all the help!
I do like the fact you have covered this. However, I dont think the 500 series unts are very affordable in most cases.I committed quite heavily to the 500 series route a while back and the units have increased significantly in th uk in recent times and don't show any sign of coming down. Even the DIY kits are not really cheap enough to make it worth the time and effort to assemble. Components are expensive. Most would be better off investing in a nice 9" rack piece as opposed to staring at a lot of empty 500 series slots for a couple of years as you try to scrape the money together to buy the units
Nice to see, I went for a similar setup, though the cheaper GAP 73 Premier. And the desktop Camden Cranbourne EC1, because I don't a 500-series rack, but also the desktop version has a really nice headphone amplifier. I'll buy another one of each, but probably the 500-series Camden, because the price of the EC1 has gone up, as good things at great prices often do. Shout out to the CAPI preamps too. Another well-priced item, and a good flavour to have. A 73, CAPI and Camden (or pair of each) and maybe an SSL Quad Pure Drive, would cover multi-micing a drum kit nicely and give lots of options for vocal, bass, guitar, piano too.
Warren! I loved this video! The editing you did on the pre amps and other gear that had the mission impossible digital lines and other effects really took this to the next level!
The same benefits that apply to 500 series units applies to the Synergy Amps system; lots of tonal variety is a small space. It's not cheap like the SiX but the Elysia Skulptor 500 has compression as well.
Welcome to home studio recording Warren! Very interesting to see you doing this as you'll be able to give amazing advice based on your experience with your main room and then the 500 series equivalent in your home room. With 500 series I think a 10 slot rack makes the most sense for value for money per slot for a home studio that doesn't need to be portable although Mike makes a very good point about empty slots making you want to buy more modules.
This is fantastic and so informative. Thank you! Having a decent mic locker and adequate multichannel interfaces and DAW setup I have wanted to really go the ‘tracking’ studio approach with a true pro front end and leave the mixing and mastering to other houses. I have been building this kind of rig in my ‘head’ as I have been feeding the cookie jar and your observations have been insightful. I don’t want to compromise but do indeed want some color going in. Seriously looking at the Cranborne with ADAT option to expand with my other gear.
The diy market for 500 gear is a good avenue. For example, Hairball Audio's 1176 units are spot on. Their elements pre (copper) are great. Diy: recording makes great stuff too. Their OLA5 opto compressor is amazing.
Enjoy your videos. Presently considering going down the 500 series route, but I have concerns that may not necessarily by that important in a recording studio. In my live application (short-wave radio, 3MHz-30MHz) we're talking broadcast of speech with a linear RF amplifier (putting out upwards of 1500 W out) which begs the question of RFI. RF bleeding into audio is absolute NO-NO. Also, I know some lunchboxes feature linear power supplies, but those with switching power supplies are quite popular too. That leads me to another major concern which is the switching frequency. Some lunchboxes have switchers at 200kHz which are likely going to result in all sorts of "birdies" or "spurs" that my receiver will hear which is another NO-NO. Yes, I am aware that pesky ground loops and/or hum often manifest themselves, but I haven't had too much trouble in that department. Not sure if any of you out there can speak to this issue? I used 19" rack gear many years without problem, but from a susceptibility to RFI those are really more robust in that the processors come in closed metal enclosures...well, there may be some with vent holes in them of course. Right now, I am really doing everything in the box. Would sure appreciate it if someone could provide links to pages addressing this! I have queried my radio buddies of course, but it appears that none of them have ever used 500 series, only 19" rack gear. I guess I could always order lunchbox gear and a couple of 500 series boards from companies that offer free returns and SEE for myself if it works.
I've updated my vocal chain with a Lewitt 441 Flex into a Golden Age 73 (the non-500 series one) into the FMR RNC. All really affordable and really good. Bought the pre and comp second hand. Really cool for vocals and snare. Looking into a hardware EQ and maybe a 2nd comp for kick atm.
I currently looking to add a mic pre. I'm thinking 1073 clone with EQ. I'd love to get an AMS Neve but the Heritage Audio HA-73 with EQ would better suit my price range at the moment.
ive always loved being supert cheap and using guitar pedals as effects units through my desk, you can create some cool things when experimenting, plus pedals like thye space echo from boss is a killer delay unit on any desk of any level
I'm currently using the UAD unison with my Manley Ref mic and have had so many people telling me that an actual external mic pre would sound so much better but i've never tried it. Great video!
I would like to add some hardware to my new studio and am currently looking for really useful extensions and sound improvers for my plugins. Also being able to get away from the screen sometimes. I currently have a Cranborne 500 Adat rack with Carnaby Harmonic EQ, SSL Violet EQ and SPl Kultube. But I'm not entirely convinced yet and I can replace everything relatively well with plugins. I only talk about the mixing process. Your experiences would certainly be very helpful.
I think two things I’d suggest that are affordable are SPL BiG 500 stereo imager. Sounds crazy only 500$. Also I’d suggest CAPI gear. And if you aren’t savvy with your soldering iron, buy pre built from resistance audio👌
Honestly I mostly like Compressers for the way in for vocals cause how dynamic they are so you can give a lil more boost for the low parts whiles the comp has you for the high volume parts
Great video. There is so much to choose from at every price point. It no longer costs an arm and a leg to get some real flavor into the signal. The radio ready results are within reach now to the masses at a fair price range. Can't wait to hear the gear you bought in action. Thanks very much
@@Producelikeapro Thank you Warren, I feel better now. It was super expensive but I wanted to feel confident to start recording more tracks at home. ;) B
I happen to love my shadow hills Gamma pre Amp! As well as my Brent Avril api clones! Btw amazing effect on your voice when you were talking about phasing and flanging lol! That got me laughing! Such a cool little part. It really keeps me engaged!
Great vid. I have a DBX580 pre and love it - Suuuper clean, so much clarity with punch. Plus it's kind of a 'pre-q' as there's some great 'High detail' control and non notched high pass control, both really transparent. I love a bit of that added air right out of the pre. I also absolutely love the Golden Age Project pre-73 Premier. Really affordable and top quality! They make desk top versions, and also a mini version. Seriously great sounding. The multi level air switch is just great. Very highly recommended. And the Midas 500 series gear is actually amazing for the price! All of it - pre, compressor, and para EQ. You get so much for so little, it's kind of ridiculous. It's because it's now owned by Behringer. But the sound quality is still there in my opinion. I have the Fredenstein Bento 6 as my lunchbox. Solid.
ART makes really good stuff. I've chosen my Pro Channel over my x73i many times. It's less than a quarter of the price (Not that the x73i is an extremely expensive preamp, but it's definitely in the world of professional grade gear)
Do you have a multiple headphone solution in the bedroom studio? So that the artist and the producer/engineer can both hear when tracking(speakers off).
I’m saving up for 4 more Shelford Channel Strip Preamps, then two 10 Rupert Neve 500 Series boxes with everything discussed here and a few things not mentioned.
Not sure if this series is going to keep going but, I am hoping from this video, is that you show us how to hook up analogue gear to a audio interface for tracking and mixing. Very interested in the tracking side, as I want the best sound possible while recording and only limited tweaking in post or digital stage. Please…….. when you receive the gear show us the ins and outs for this process
@@AtTheSourceStudios Well then, on your good recommendation I will order a few things and I'll see what happens. We own a lot of outboard, but I've never even considered Fredenstein. I don't know why I haven't thought of it, I don't have anything against it. I love all price ranges, because good is good.
14:44 - not seeing the point here - 2 shelf / bell EQs with fixed frequencies and a compressor with only threshold? Seems very limited compared to a SSL software channel strip...
Trying to decide what monitors to buy for my small home studio! I was wondering what monitors you have on your desk? Have you any good recommendations for around €1200? Cheers
Does the 500 series chassis interface not going to be like RME. Will it be like SSL2+ level? Or in between. Also, which 500 chassis are good for price, quiet, no hummmm, or noise. Thx
I have a 700$ APi Lunchbox and a 250$ 3 slot Lindell audio. They both run every time I fire up my setup. I have not had any of the issues I keep hearing about with 500 series. I guess if you do this for a living and you run the units 10 or 12 hrs a day 7 days a week or if your running one of the units that consume alot of power you run into problems. But speaking for myself I have had no problems.
I haven’t tried it personally, but a stand alone two channel rack mount unit for the FET compressor buy - the ART Trans-Y, doesn’t look too bad, and the price seems decent, 399.00 new.
Great insights! I see you have a UAD Apollo (twin?) interface sitting on the desk behind you, would you connect a lunchbox chassis using ADAT? I have an Apollo twin duo myself and I'm wondering if it's possible at all or do you need an interface with lot's of in/outputs?
Great video! Was hoping you'd mention that new Heritage Audio OST 8 ADAT rack. Ive been thinking about going that route into my Universal Audio Apollo Twin ADAT.
Do they manufacture all guitar pedal effects as 500 series? I am monitoring the market and cannot find one. I think it is great idea for manufacturers!
Check out the warm audio TB12 (tonebeast 12). It has both a nickel and Steel transformer, two op amps (based on Jensen 918 or the Melcor 1731) and two types of transformers and an impedance switch. I love mine and would love to hear your thoughts!
Wow, what a wonderful and fact-filled video. Thank you Warren and thank you Mike! You both really know your stuff and how to present the ideas in a way all can understand. Have a wonderful holiday season.
Dear Warren, I'm as broke as can be My machine is an old ninties workstation and all my gear is barely holding in there, I have recorded over two hundred tunes on Studio One and of them i have twenty ones i feel are pretty good. but the closer i get to a finnished mix the more imperfections i see, Is there any way to make 'Finishing' things any easier?
A lot of these 500 series, in fact all of them, are recommended by Mike Arango during this video, but when you actually call Sweetwater and talk to them they speak more realistically about what is good and what is hype. For instance, they suggest that API is way better than any clone. I understand that on a show like this they shy away from discounting products they sell. I’ve been told by them to stay away from Fredinstein, and that the Warm Audio pres don’t satisfy like Neve, SSL, or API. I suggest that you get what you pay for applies here
You do definitely get what you pay for with a lot of this stuff. While my personal taste leans higher end I'd argue that never before has there been so much decent equipment available at relatively low price points. The focus of this video was to be on that price point, though our conversation drifted a little 😆
Hi Warren. Try the diyre color palette 15s in your 500 rack..I swear, you'll start deleting all those "tape" emulator plugins. Including your beloved, T-Racks.

You get so much for so little, it's kind of ridiculous. It's because it's now owned by Behringer. But the sound quality is still there in my opinion. I have the Fredenstein Bento 6 as my lunchbox. Solid.
What about the Electrodyne 501 for snare & kick?
Have you tried them? No? You should! ❤
Love Electrodyne Pres!
ART makes really good stuff.
I've chosen my Pro Channel over my x73i many times. It's less than a quarter of the price
(Not that the x73i is an extremely expensive preamp, but it's definitely in the world of professional grade gear)
Do you have a multiple headphone solution in the bedroom studio? So that the artist and the producer/engineer can both hear when tracking(speakers off).
this is awesome!!! thanks for sending
Thanks ever so much
I've heard the crane song tube compressor, The Falcon I believe, is the end all 500 series compressor.
I've been very happy with my Fredenstein Bento Pro 500 rack. Love 500 series!! 🙂
I've never tried any Fredenstein equipment, but I see it all the time. Does it stand up well with no fuss?
@@legacyShredder1 I do have a Bento 6S, this is very good and got no fuss or noise! It's affordable and has a lot of power per slot :)
@@legacyShredder1 yes very nice. Plenty of power with the chassis and their comps are very nice as well especially for the money. Good character.
@@AtTheSourceStudios Well then, on your good recommendation I will order a few things and I'll see what happens. We own a lot of outboard, but I've never even considered Fredenstein. I don't know why I haven't thought of it, I don't have anything against it. I love all price ranges, because good is good.
I’ve got a Bentos 8. Still only half full.
I like my Wes Audio Supercarrier II. It Holds 11 500 series modules. I just filled it up, and I’m about to get another.
14:44 - not seeing the point here - 2 shelf / bell EQs with fixed frequencies and a compressor with only threshold? Seems very limited compared to a SSL software channel strip...
If you can’t make that sound good then I don’t think it’s your gear that’s the problem
Hi Warren what was the analogue software you showed us that you put on all the tracks?
The emulation? That’s usually McDSP Analog Channel
@@Producelikeapro Thankyou ill check it out keep up the good stuff!
Ok. My question is with all of these 500 series models, what is the best sequence of these models for either of the Cranborne 500 models frames?
Will you be doing a review once those 500 units come in and how you like them?
Good insight. And what's those IKM Precisions doing there?
I would try the GAP, I have some of their products, sounds great, specially the LA2A, it’s unbelievable good!
I’ve had my Warm TB12 for about a month and it’s become my go to for loud amps and tube/valve mics.
@@ProbablyTooLoud Thanks for the reply! What are your preferred settings?
I have been looking forward to this video. I want to mix hybrid and sell off a ton of hardware gear that doesn’t get much use.
what an amazing video.. opened up a doorway for me.. thanks for that
That’s wonderful to hear! Thanks ever so much
Hairball audio has amazing 500 1176s! You should check them out!
Bought a DBX channel strip 3 years ago from there, only used it 2x
Wow, what a wonderful and fact-filled video. Thank you Warren and thank you Mike! You both really know your stuff and how to present the ideas in a way all can understand. Have a wonderful holiday season.
Thanks ever so much David! I really appreciate your wonderful comment!
Thank you so much! I'm glad to hear that it was helpful!
It's like a mock up convo with me and my Sweetwater rep if I won the lottery.
Haha I hear you
This vid is right up my alley 😎
Thanks so much for watching!
Why de pre73 from GA was ignore?
This is sooooo helpful.... thank you so much... l know what l need to do... so enlightening!!!!
Thanks ever so much! Glad you enjoyed the video
Why didn't you mention the Black Lion Auteur MKIII? It's quite impressive.
Anyone know why most people seem to opt for the API 550A over the 550B ?
Hmm interesting I’ve owned both, can’t tell you what I preferred and why! Both sounded great to me
Warren, you lookem MAAAAVOLOUS!
The focus of this video was to be on that price point, though our conversation drifted a little 😆
An additional option: Track down a used all tube 12ay7 Electro Harmonix mic pre... I love mine and one can experiment with different tube pairings.
Hi Warren. Try the diyre color palette 15s in your 500 rack..I swear, you'll start deleting all those "tape" emulator plugins. Including your beloved, T-Racks.
