How knopflers never rated in the top 10 is criminal,, this alone is a top 5 performance, it's incredible 🥺

I agree and have commented in a similar way on other reactions, but for me I would say top 5. I have not really explored some guitarists (not too familar with Jeff Beck for example) but I can only think of 3 guitarists who can compete with him. These are Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana and Stevie Ray Vaughn. I am sure others will have suggestions.

The thing to remember with Dire Straits:
    MK's voice is the narrator
    MK's guitar is the singer
Brothers In Arms is such an emotional song, MK's guitar makes it so
    A few Dire Straits suggestions
    Telegraph Road
    Private Investigations
    Tunnel of Love
    Romeo and Juliet
Once Upon A Time In The West
    Planet of New Orleans
All with great storytelling, a bit proggy, a bit theatrical, musicianship off the charts

I'm so grateful that I grew up with this music! Not only was Mark a guitar virtuoso, but he was also a skilled story-teller, song-writer and composer for the band. Nevertheless, he always made sure to give all of the band members a chance to shine. Fun Fact: In addition to his unique sound, the fact that he is a finger-plucking genius, and his ability to produce complex emotions and nuanced transitions with and through his guitar... Mark was actually left handed but was playing guitar with his right, whilst making it all look so easy! If you want to really see the breathtaking live musicianship of this band and the kind of epic musical masterpiece they could collectively produce, and some of Mark's best work, you have to treat yourself to their performance of "Telegraph Road" from this same Alchemy Live concert.

Mark Knopfler the quietest and most persuasive singer in the world! you might want to watch the official video version of this as it is incredibly moving and is one of those that actually adds to the strength of the song.(it won a grammy at the time) look out for the waves breaking and turning into skulls. i saw dire straits at the live aid concert at wembley london in 1985. They were doing their live alchemy tour at the time so payed wembley stadium in the afternoon and then wembley arena in the evening - that must have been quite the day. That concert performance is legendary if you want to see Sultans of Swing in an entirely new light try the live alchemy recording - you won't believe the guitars. that tour or the on the night tour are brilliant for any reactions you want to do for them - they are always even bertter live than studio recordings. You also need to get to Private investigations ( which is like an entire film noire in a song ) , telegraph road and Where do you think youre going - as soon as you can manage!!! you will be very happy

Mark Knopflers brilliance emanates from deep inside with his song writing, guitar playing and his soulful gritty voice...He will always be one of the UK's greatest of all time. When you add in the other members of Dire Straits you have a group made in heaven!

There are many more songs I think you will enjoy by both Dire Straits and Marks solo work, he wrote so many great songs
    Telegraph Road
    Tunnel of Love
    Private Investigations
    Love Over Gold
    Your latest trick
    Calling Elvis
    Planet of New Orleans
    Romeo and Juliet
    and from Marks solo career:
    Sailing to Philadelphia
    Speedway at Nazareth
    Canibals
    Boom like that
    Coyote
    Postcards from Paraguay
    Song for Sonny Liston
    Going Home(theme from Local Hero)
Most of those songs you can find live performances wich usualy also showcase Marks playing more

Dire Starits are my 2nd favourite band of all time behind Pink Floyd, but it is really close. Mark Knopfler is a lot like David Gilmour in his style of playing but he is technically a better guitarist. For me Pink Floyd beats Dire Straits marginally to my No. 1 only on the music and the volume of material. I struggled to come to that concluskon to be honest. All the members of Dire Straits are more skilled musicians.

Hi there just discovered your channel. Love your reaction. I really think you'll enjoy Telegraph Road and Once Upon A Time In The West from Dire Straits Alchemy Live 1983 and if you like Sultans Of Swing you should check out this from Dire Straits Live Sydney Final Concert 1986. Also with Telegraph Road, the epicness is of Biblical proportions. 😊 Anyway Cheers from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸

-We can see a classic scene with this song, on the TV show "Miami Vice" in the 1980's, (in last scene of the episode: 'Out Where the Buses Don't Run')

I'm not so keen on this version. The slide guitar doesn't belong for me. I don't know why they added it. It doesn't improve things in my opinion.

    • @fideba1
      @fideba1 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I respectfully disagree. Also not a fan of slide guitar, but the craftmanship and musicality that it brings to this song is amazing. The blend between lead guitar and slide guitar is pretty unique, and doing this live at this level of musicality is pretty unbelievable.

    • @markbrooks8144
      @markbrooks8144 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@fideba1 I respectfully accept your respectful disagreement. And Mr Knopfler obviously saw it the same way as you. It's just that for me, the star of this show is the tone (and emotion) of Mark Knopfler's guitar. I can't get enough of it. So another stringed instrument taking precious "solo time" away from Mark's guitar, is an unwelcome cuckoo in the nest. That's not to take away from the skill and musicality you mention. You are not wrong. Dire Straits orchestration is always incredible. I just prefer this song, without that slide guitar. Each to their own though.

One criticism for you, Brothers in arms, not brother!! Plural, not singular on the brother!! Other than that, great analysis at the end. Look for more Dire Straits videos, especially from the Alchemy concert videos!! Keep them coming!!

Dire straights creates this atmosphere that is built up by deeply felt lyrics and absolute mastership of the guitar. What a moving emotional event - this is music at its best

  • @delorangeade
    @delorangeade 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

There aren't many Dire Straits songs I care for, but this is a great one by any measure. This isn't my favourite version of the song, but it's still pretty good, and for any of us who remember the Falklands War this will always be evocative. You can get a lot more sounds and nuances using your fingers rather than a pick. It's easier in some ways, more complicated in others.

Hi there, thanx for your reaction. Watch the video too. The studio version is great and a bit different.
Of course there are other songs you should check out and would love!
On the emotional side, try You And Your Friend (live 1992 out of studio version 1991) or the studio version of Tunnel Of Love + Romeo And Juliet + Where Do You Think You’re Going?
You’ll find an impressive version of Telegraph Road Live in 1983 (Alchemy). The live version of Sultans from the same night is also a must-hear.
Cool videos : Money For Nothing, Brothers In Arms, Calling Elvis, Walk Of Life…
Great studio versions also include :
    Down To The Waterline
    On Every Street
    Wild West End
    Single Handed Sailor
    Skateaway
    Private Investigations
    Your Latest Trick
    Planet Of New Orleans
So many songs (all of them!!)
