Hey Suzi and Travis, here is another song from dire straits- brothers in arms. This is a song mark wrote about the Falklands war which i feel is timeless and can be applied to any conflict In the world . Mark knopfler' on guitar and vocals is sensational. the guitar truly sounds like it is also lamenting the senseless nature of war. Enjoy!

When you have Eric Clapton in the band just playing rhythm guitar whilst you give the most delicate and moving solo... then you know that the guitarist is something special. As did the rest of the audience.. Such a suitable song for that event.

When a guitar cried its heart out and Mr Clapton played a supporting role and two lines get to me for reasons that do not matter:
    "You did not desert me
    My brothers in arms"
Its a lament to all people who have faced or will face combat. All are Brothers in Arms regardless of sides.
It was written after the Falklands War where Mark lost a friend. The studio video was amazing and included sketches from world wars and yes the Falklands War. Regardless of the sounds the words are epic:
    These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
    And always will be
    Someday you'll return to
    Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn to be
    Brothers in arms
    Through these fields of destruction
    Baptisms of fire
    I've witnessed your suffering
    As the battle raged high
And though they did hurt me so bad
    In the fear and alarm
    You did not desert me
    My brothers in arms
    There's so many different worlds
    So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones
Now the sun's gone to hell and
    The moon's riding high
    Let me bid you farewell
    Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line in your palm
    We're fools to make war
    On our brothers in arms

The Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Concert, which Dire Straits headlined, was seen by over 600m people in at least 67 countries worldwide and it played a significant role in piling pressure on the South African government to finally release Mandela, which happened less than 2 years later, and bring an end to apartheid.
Before performing this song Mark said how proud he was that Dire Straits had been banned in South Africa since 1979, the year after their first album was released, and said 4 words that ring as true today as they did then: "One humanity. One justice." It's fair to say this is the most emotional performance of the song Mark's ever given.

I had the pleasure (and i mean pleasure) of attending that concert. Myself and 4 friends. Long but fantastic day - with plenty of great performances from Whitney Houston, Simple Minds, Eurythmics, Sting and ofcourse Dire Straits who blew everyone away. It was June so wasn't cold. I can't totally remember but I'm sure the tickets were about £20-£25 ($25-$30). Eric Clapton was brought in to replace Jack Sonni who couldn't play as he had just become a father to twin girls.

What a powerful rendition from Dire Straights. As others have mentioned, the a cappella group Home Free did an incredible cover of this song; you might want to give it a listen...and reaction? The harmonies are out of this world.

It was around this time that Mark had flown to see Vince Gill perform in the US and invited Vince to join Dire Straits. Vince had just gotten a recording contract, and so he declined. That would have been two of the greatest in one band…

    • @jjc5407
      @jjc5407 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think that came a little later. Vince plays on The Bug from the On Every Street album released in 1991 and I believe Mark invited him to join the band for the subsequent tour but he declined leading to Phil Palmer being recruited for the rhythm guitar role.
Phil had been part of Eric Clapton's prior to that. There's a great moment at Knebworth '90 when Eric broke a string mid-song and handed over to Phil to improvise a solo while he got his guitar fixed/replaced. Phil, being an experienced and consummate professional, handled the unexpected spotlight with ease while Mark watched on from the wings as Dire Straits were on next. Eric's band stayed on stage to perform with them too. I Think I Love You Too Much with Mark and Eric trading solos is magnificent.

Why would anyone bother to ‘watch’ a reaction to a static recording. TO FORGIVE
Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s 1934 speech about former enemies in the Great War - The war to end all wars. (this attribution is disputed) It embodies the folly of war. This quote is abridged:
“Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours. You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries, wipe away your tears. After having lost their lives on this land, they have become our sons as well.”

Did you even listen to the lyrics? This is a song about a soldier who is dying and whose last words are "we're fools to make war on our brothers in arms." Knopfler's guitar lines echo the emotions of each of the song's lines. It's a crushing anti-war song that has become beloved of military families who've lost loved ones to war. You really should try hearing the lyrics for a change.

If you liked this one, you gotta check out What it is by Mark Knopfler too.

HomeFree do an excellent version of Brothers in Arms considering it’s a cappella, with no instruments well worth a reaction. Before anyone says anything the originals are the best it’s just a different version.

OH! Those injuries are going to be real after the video with that "you don't have to do much acting" comment. 😂😂

I do like this song but I highly recommend a band called The Levellers and their song Another Man's Cause about the same subject.👌

Better still, Hole in the Ground by Bernard Cribbins. There's a great moment in the episode of Brian Johnson's Life on the Road featuring Mark Knopfler where the two of them start singing it together as they reminisce about their childhoods and early musical influences growing up in the North East of England.

I always though Clapton was the GOAT. But crikey, Knoofler gives him a run for his money.
