  • In this age of social media and the internet, we can learn things faster than ever, and technology continues to shape our current culture and define growing trends.
It’s hard to imagine that life was so different just 100 years ago, but it was a time when access to information was a luxury only afforded to the privileged. The computer and television were not even invented yet, and newspapers were still a major source of information for the masses.
100 years is not that far back in time, but we sure have come a long way from the way we lived back then. Here are some strange things everyone thought were normal 100 years ago.

When I was growing up, the family had a memorial hair wreath that had been in my Mom's family for two-or-three generation. For those who don't know, that's an intricate wreath was made of the hair of loved ones who had died. They were fairly common in the 19th century. Because I'd grown up with it, I didn't see anythng weird about it but when occasionally a friend would ask about it and I explained, they tended to respond, "You mean it's made out of hair from dead people?? My God that's sick! How can your family stand to have that on the wall???" So there's something that was normal 100 years ago that is not seen as such now.

I learned the truth years later. Telling a 13 year old who's gasping for breath that it's all in his mind is pretty dang heartless. Unfortunately back in the 70's there were people that thought asthma was a psychosomatic disorder. I didn't cry at my brother in laws funeral because I was sure his death was just all in his mind .

My dad showed me magic lantern shows in the 1950s. He had saved the whole thing from the early part of the century, I think. Some slides had moving parts whilst others had shades that revealed new parts of the image to tell the story. I remember one was a part of Alice in Wonderland. The Cheshire cat with the smile faded away, well he sort of slid away but the fun was the same.

At the time the cigarette was so popular, average lifespan often would not reach 70, and coal smoke and lead vapor were present ubiquitously. The cigarette was actually a medical catch-all, in the days when ambulance attendants were limited to non-invasive first aid: a victim might be given a cigarette to dilate the air passages and blood vessels and to soothe the nerves, when attendants were neither equipped nor qualified to issue oxygen or sedatives. Even the cough could help release and evacuate foreign matter. How times have changed, principally because longer life spans permitted development of emphysema and heart disease, where early mortality had prevented the impact of these causes previously.
