We actually do sort of get an explanation about the Bi-generation thing: In The Big Blue Yonder the doctor invoked a superstition to hold off the creatures from the void and stall them- this is what allowed the Toymaker to escape his confinement and cause the events of The Giggle Now then, right after the Bi-generation happened, Ncuti' doctor mentioned it was an old Galyfreyin myth- heavily implying that the Toymaker's presence allows for superstition and myth to become a reality- this is also how he was able to duplicate the TARDIS later in the episode
Wild Blue Yonder was a brilliant episode. It played the horror elements very well and it reminded me of two classic sci-fi horror movies which are Event Horizon and The Thing. Seeing the Doctor's doppelganger doing the spiderwalk from The Exorcist was a very creepy touch.
During the 50th anniversary special we did get a hint that the doctor would want to return to some old face every now and again we just didn’t know it would pay off 😅
A fair take. I personally was OK with David Tennant returning, as while Doctor Who is about growth and change, sometimes we need to take a step back in order to deal with a past trauma to once more grow and move forward. One step back, then two steps forward.
Actually, there was one other time the Doctor's clothes changed when he regenerated - the very first regeneration. After he regenerated, he stood up, his cloak fell off, and he was wearing his new outfit. That is the only other time this happened, and we didn't see the clothes magically changing, so it's still pretty weird. I liked the specials overall, and I loved seeing Tennant and Tate back together, but I agree they could have gone straight to Gatwa and it would still have worked.
I came into the comments to say this. It was such a missed opportunity to not explain that in Twice Upon a Christmas. Have an excuse for the First Doctor to need to change clothes, and 12 "pulls something out of the wardrobe" for him. Easy as pie.
6:35 If I remeber correctly there was an episode in which a character (I don't remember who) said to the Doctor that he would meet some old faces in his journey. Sure we could see this as he refering to some old companions and past doctors, but this words was also telling that he would return to some his old incarnations. This could be use to explain some continuity erros in past episodes. For exemple: "The Two Doctors" crossover in which the 8th doctor meets the 2nd doctor and Jaime, who are older (due to the actors age) and on a mission given by the Timelords (which contradict the 2nd Doctor story, in which he was fugitive). We can now assume that maybe the Doctor, in the future, will regenarate back into the 2nd doctor, reunite with Jaime and go on adventure.
I wish they had used the Toymaker as the reason The Doctor regenerated back into Tennant and why the clothes regenerated with them. He has the power to make it happen and and it could have made for an cool little time loop, Toymaker brings back the Doctor so the Doctor can bring back the Toymaker.
its made clear that time lords can choose their face, with past doctors like 12 and river and maybe 2 and 6. his subconscious picked this face to deal with his issues. this is stated in the end of the giggle.
Yeah...that regeneration didn't make any sense and I definitely would love to see an explanation as to why the Doctor's clothes changed all of a sudden when this never happened before in any other incarnation, both in universe and production wise. Still though, it was nice to see them again. Though, I guess this means that the 14th Doctor might be a reoccurring character during the 15th Doctor era and so on? Still weirded out with the whole bi-generation thing.
I liked Wild Blue Yonder and I'm glad that Donna Noble got closure. Imho, the special could have worked if 10 showed up in the Tardis after 13 regenerated to Ncuti and the specials would have both of them.
A friend of mine reckons a lot of the more controversial decisions in RTD's second showrun were down to the writers and directors trying to appeal more to the American audience. No offence guys but I think he has a point; David Tennant was _the_ Doctor that really drew in the American audience to RTD's initial resurrection of Doctor Who and, well, execs are gonna exec so, naturally, they bought back Tennant...and went with Neil Patrick Harris as the toymaker instead of going for a lesser known British actor....and Jinkx Monsoon as Maestro. Don't get me wrong, this isn't the first time Doctor Who has casted American actors (I know a lot of people who forgot that Ben Browder was once in an episode.) or even big name celebrities, but it definitely feels like the first time they've played primary villains in the show. He also reckons this is why the recent series, while good, does feel a bit like diet-RTD; like his writing was kind of watered down a bit to (bear in mind this is from the perspective of studio executives) appeal more to American audiences. While I can imagine there being some division on whether or not his recent showrun felt watered down I have to admit that it does feel like the kind of move studio executives _would_ do given that their understanding of audiences comes from vague charts rather than, god forbid, actually taking the time to understand audiences by listening to them and/or interacting with them more directly on the subject (like the simple act of asking friends and family what they think of the show). All I can say is that if the execs have been watering down the writing then they themselves are morons who have forgotten that American audiences praised the living hell out of the RTD and Moffat episodes when they were giving it their all.
Excellent video. I did enjoy the specials as well. It was odd yet nice to see David and Catherine together again. I do like the new interior to the Tardis too. The first special I do enjoy the most while others was also quite good. It was a fun time. I do enjoy our new Doctor and I did appreciate the nostalgia.
I like David Tennant as the 10th Doctor better. It was nice seeing David back, but him as the 14th Doctor does not suit me at all. I hated the bi-generation scene. That was unacceptable, messing the regeneration up like that. That is why I had to retire.
When it comes to the 60th anniversary I think the power of the doctor is the true anniversary despite being a year earlier. Featuring various past doctors and past companions. Including one of the first three companions Ian Chesterton (rip) The strangest part about this bi generation is that according to Russell T Davis this affected all of his regenerations. Supposedly now each doctor split into two rather then changing. Which really makes the fate of the past doctors more questionable
13th doctor left Toymaker: well thats alright then. Yeah neil pattrick harris is awesome has the toymaker. Also their are 4 people who are the doctor to me Silvestor McCoy Matt smith Peter capaldi And 15th doctor
while i injoyed all three of the urgg 14th doctors speicails. NPH as the toymaker was a delight it dose feel like a rather despreate ploy to give doctor who some new life and love after its struggled during the chipnia era and what ever the bloody hell, flux was
My take on the 60th specials was that after the (imo) fairly earned poor ratings of the Chibnal era (Jodie Whitaker deserved so much better writing than what she got)- was a not *just* a fanservicey "hey we're back to what we were!" BS, but also something that likely has to be done to restore the BBC's faith in DW and more importantly, sell Disney on investing in the show. I think the return of Tennant as the Doctor was narratively weak 3 episodes were not enough time to tell a good in depth story, and the episodes reverted HARD to classic who "monster of week" after years of having season long arcs. The reversion to classic style Who, while necessary to sell the show to fans, the BBC, and Disney also didn't set up the tone of Gatwa's era well. Genuinely 14 should have had a few more specials (I understand this was impossible for Tennant and Tates scheduling) And Gatwa should have had a standard introduction episode instead of being tied into the 60th (but hey, he was already cast and probably contracted to appear in the 60th, and ten year anniversaries have a tradition of being multi doctor stories so I can't begrudge them that) However, I think a better way to handle this is if Gatwa was allowed to have the 60th and Tennant just returns as 10, maybe even have other actors such as Smith, McCan, and Mcoy return as the doctor as well to make it a proper multi doctor story. However personally, I liked the 60th specials, but I can say they would have not been any different had a different actor played the Doctor because they are such stock standard Doctor Who episodes- and that's good. Personally I believe an actor playing the doctor should be able to be given dialogue written for any version of the Doctor and pull it off. If it doesn't work for more than just the current Doctor, then the writer isn't writing The Doctor, they're writing A doctor .
8:06 of course there is no in-universe reason for why The Doctor's clothes change, but in an interview with Doctor Who Magazine Davies said (and I'm paraphrasing here) that he didn't want the image of Tennant wearing Whittaker's clothes to be used to mock queer culture. He made a comment specifically referencing his love for drag and the culture around it.
Tennant is a big ally to the trans-community, so a picture of him in woman's clothes would definitely have been misused by haters **cough**Linehan**cough**
The only special I enjoyed from the three specials is The Toymaker returning because that episode was so much fun to watch and memeable. Plus the introduction of the 15th doctor was incredibly well done. The first two specials were just eh, as much as I appreciate the adaptation of the old fourth doctor comics of the first special, it was too rushed
Hey all you hardcore Ben 10 fans out there, you guys should make a fan-made Ben 10 2D animated series that's exactly like watch the original that kick off the franchise, but it's not just in a league of it's own entirely nor a absolutely incredible masterpiece in it's own right altogether, but it's also easily to get into it for both old and future newcomers alike (as well as the folks who're not really into this franchise) call: Ben 10: Dial Ten For Ben! and the quality of it needs to be such an funbelievabley impressive spectacle to behold, especially for mid to late 200's era animation standards, it'll genuinely make you believe you're actually watching an official Ben 10 2D animated series, period! Also, later on in this series, Ben young adult college cousin, Riley (the Gwen Tennyson from Ben 10 Alien Force, but jaw-droppingly far more attractive than ever before, period), finally decides to start a lesbian with with her longtime college lesbian girl crush, Judy, THE indescribably sexy popular girl of the whole college, no questions asked) and they both not only party out like it's 1999 at THE top-tier greatest and most epic fun modern day 24/7 lesbian girls/drop dead jaw-dropping Maxine Magazine sexy rave party/beach resort in all of Bellwood, but then later on work there too as both rave party lesbian cage dancers and beach lesbian supermodels. you guys can also watch this show on both either both VHS and Laserdisc or on DVD and BluRay as well.

That was The Day of the Doctor and ERod mentions that moment towards the end of the video.
"Punching the diamond wall" sounds like a euphemism...

Actually the clothes changing has happened before with the first doctor. It still didn't fully work here. But there is precedent

I agree that also these specials are cheap nostalgia, they’re also a lot of fun

Honestly, i wasn’t a fan. I’ll always love having Catherine Tate back, but that RTD writing really gets painful sometimes
Rose has a David Tennant Doctor clone. Donna has a David Tennant Doctor Clone. When will Martha get her Doctor Clone?
I didn't like Martha. She fell in love with the doctor, and I was like, No, that Rose's doctor!
She doesn't need one. She has Ricky! Or, was it Mickey? Eh, one of those two!

The clothes regenerating was just pure cowardice. RTD has said that he just didn't want to show David Tennant in women's clothing.
I hate the 14th doctor it makes the doctors regenerating irrelevant now and the 15th Doctors bi-generation is just a massive retcon.
