  • Introducing some new isopods... and some other miscellaneous updates. The isopods came courtesy of Justin and Peter of Dart Knight Exotics. They sent these as a way to showcase just a few of the captive bred isopods they offer. The same are showcased on the poster that was made in collaboration with ZTHphoto. Watch the video and see the below links for details.
    ALSO I apologize for the buzzing sound throughout the video. I was having issues with my mic that I didn't notice until I started editing the video.
    Isopods are really neat and something that aren't “just for kids” anymore. This is a serious hobby that a lot of people are getting into that also goes hand in hand with everything else I show on the channel. I'd imagine that most people watching this video like/own isopods of their own. Even if you don't or don't intend on doing so, hopefully you can appreciate those little “rollie pollies” next time you see them. They are a very important component to most ecosystems, which is why they are so heavily implemented in bioactive setups. Some of them also look pretty cool as well.
    You can use promo code “serpa15” on ZTHphoto's entire Etsy store and on all of Dart Knight Exotics. Like I said in the video, I don't receive compensation. This is just for your personal use if you're interested.

    You can also find them on Instagram @iammakingart and @thedartknightexotics
    If you have any comments, suggestions or questions, leave them down in the comments! Also for additional content like this, photos of my terrariums, projects sneak peeks and more, follow me on Instagram @SerpaDesign. / serpadesign

    First off I'M VERY SORRY for the buzzing feedback throughout the video. I did my best to try and get rid of it in post, but I could only do so much. I was having issues with my mic/camera and almost didn't upload the video because of it. I figured the show must go on. If you can't watch because of it I understand. Anyways enjoy the ispods (rollies pollies, pill bugs, potatoe bugs, woodlice) or whatever you like to call them. Personally I like “pill bugs” as that's what we said as kids, but I'm curious what you call them. Let me know! Also check out the video description for links/information.

      @Timothy Newitt I'm no expert, but as far as I can gather, the name is due to their appearance near or on wooden benches, and the fact that they digest and break down wood - often the bench itself. We have several frequently used bench/seating designs that use untreated wooden logs.

But, after learning more and more about them, the fascination had increased tremendously. I never knew there were so many types out there, and they look very different from one another. Anyway, very cool video on the isopods, and I can't wait to see what more you do with your animal room.

AquariMax has an online store for his isopods with fair prices, too. Also, you can just google isopods for sale and find lots of people selling them.
      I started with Zebras, which are really active and fun to watch, but there are cheaper ways to enter the hobby - even collecting some outside from a park or a yard.

    German is reeeeaaally weird, when it comes to synthesizing words, because a lot of simple words seem to drastically change meaning, when combined with affixes. One example:
    Zug = train
    Einzug = the act of moving in
    Aufzug = elevator
    Abzug = trigger
    Bezug = reference
    Überzug = cover
    Zuzug = immigration
    And on top of that all of these german words also have OTHER completely different meanings.

I thought they were simply decomposers, but as it turns out they actually chew and damage the plants and their roots. So I can't use the castings for my plants. Now I want to get rid of them, without killing them, but how? I don't want to dump them outside, because I do not want to let the red wigglers loose, which is apparently not great for the environment. Any thoughts?

    You being a fish guy as well will appreciate something like a small amazon puffer or some kind of puffer fish assuming you can house one. I used to feed my puffer isopods, and since isopods are basically a shrimp, they can survive submerged in water and walk around the tank for quite some time. My puffer would love these, and you could hear the crunching from the outside of the tank when he would eat... I have had a few puffers, but the Amazon puffer was my favorite. I think you should get one someday! would be fun to watch

    Rolly polies are so cool. When I was kid I always wanted to know how they curled up into such tight ball... on a separate note I have a pet frog, my very first. He came to me as a tadpole when my mom rescued him from an educational display where she worked and he’s doing great now! But I’d like to set him up with a bio active home that represents his native habitat. He’s some kind of North American leopard frog (most likely) and I’d love some tips on how to mimic that environment. If anyone here in the comments has any ideas I’d love to hear them, because I don’t have a clue 😆

    Hey... Your works are really great and inspiring... I have been following your channel for long time and learned a lot from your work... By the way I have a question here...
    Is it really important to mix up the soil with spangnam moss as you do it to retain moisture?? As here in my locality it is difficult to get some... And also want to know if i can use simple garden soil to make my terrerium??

    Here in the UK we call them woodlouse (plural woodlice).
    Pill bugs is a fun name... wish I thought of that when I was a kid lol.

    Looks like you lost your values and are now giving yourself away for advertisement. Of course you do not get commision...only all the free stuff they sent you. This is really heinous and not nice to watch, how you sell yourself... Nice coincidence that they hook you up with all that stuff shortly after this freakin expensive poster is available for sale...
    Also it is against the law to advertise without a disclaimer, especially when you are having so many followers/subscribers

    Sorry, I'm a little confused, (first world problems) but are these classed as your pets? or have you got a future for them...food?

    Oh dang, 123 different types? There's a lot of them in north eastern Washington. I've seen lots of gray and brown ones, both rolly pollies and the ones that don't roll up, and the occasional rare white ones. I used to catch lots of bugs when I was a kid.

    I just want to thank you because my whole view of isopods has done a 180 after seing your videos. Now whenever I find one in my house, instead of being grossed out, I scoop it up and put it in my terrarium and it's so satisfying watching them take care of any fallen leaves or bits of debris.

    Can the isopods and springtails climb glass? I ask because I have a nice big glass bowl that I want to use for a terrarium though it doesn't have a lid. The plan is to add them, but if they're just going to climb out, it won't be worth the effort.

    My aquarium's largest volcanic rock seems to be home to some of these non-rolly rolly polies, every now and again I see one come out. Not sure what to do (if anything)

    Cool isopods! When i was a small kid i thought they were marbles. I would get them to roll up and i would roll them back and forth between my hands on the floor. I was never harmfull to them never killed them. They were just a fun toy for a little poor girl. We always called them Rolly Poley

    For future isopod bins, I strongly suggest using a wood burner to melt the hole and not a drill. I used to use a drill but since moving to a wood burner I never risk cracking the plastic and my holes look a lot cleaner in my opinion.
