    You can SEE the change in Cain when she hears of the Viper and Raptor launch. Up until that point, it seemed as if she was barely paying attention to Adama - just deflecting a junior officer's complaints. Once the ships launch, she realises what's actually happening... and starts to turn nasty. Nicely acted.

      She's also worried, she knows Adama and the Galactica.... She's all too aware of the consequences of a head on conflict with them. Pegasus will prevail, but not without heavy losses to her. She's still looking for an alternative in her mind...... but no "She has no choice" Backing down is not an option to her. Even though at the back of her mind she's still contemplates it, even if only briefly! THAT'S WHY I LOVE THAT SCENE!

      Theonlynamenoonehas She has no choice but to back down. She's the 'Hitler' of the Colonial Fleet. Adama and the Galactica are family, and those ties that binded them together would overthrow anything Cain would bring to bear.

      She's a typical narcissist. When others stand up to them, they tend to dig their heels in but in the end shows their true colours, and exposes their weaknesses. Adama with his long experience would know how to exploit her weaknesses

      ***** The fleet is wherever the flag officer or highest ranking officer is located. The colonial fleet is located during Pegasus with Admiral Cain and the BSP. She is correct when she says he is back in the colonial fleet as he is now back under her command, i.e. the fleet commanders command. in the extended version of 'Pegasus', Adama notes that Cain was 'very well connected' and that she was 'promoted over half the Commander's on the list'. This implies that Cain's promotion to Admiral may not have been merit-based, but instead may have been due to Cain's politicial connections. One fact on Cain's leadership remains however: the Pegasus survived post Cylon attack, thanks in part to her tough approach. Lloyd Bridges Commander Cain mirrors this when he says to Adama in the classic BSG that his crew's has survived without help from anyone, hence the right to determine their fate.

    This is one of those perfect moments in television. The entire episode leading up to it was absolutely perfect, with the foreshadowing, the mounting tension, and eventually the point at which Adama finally refused to be crossed. This scene would have to be one of the best pieces of dialogue in the series and clearly shows the differences between the two commanders.
    As hinted earlier in the episode, Cain's promotion to Admiral seems to be more because of her political connections rather than ability.She is an absolute 'hard-arse', a stickler for the rules, ruthless and without compassion. She had made tough decisions, at the cost of her humanity. That would account for her crew's survival, but, her leadership style is flawed because people respect her more for her rank (and perhaps out of fear seeing she shot her XO) than abilities.
    Adama on the other hand takes a more personal approach, as shown here. His appointment to Galactica as it later turns out was a comfortable way into forced retirement, a convenient way for the fleet commanders to get rid of him following an incident that almost provoked a war (see the episode 'Hero'). That being said, Adama easily commands more respect from his crew. Not only is he a seasoned war veteran, but he takes a keen interest in the affairs of his people -treating them like family. That is what endears him to anyone serving under him.

    Adama vs Cain service history;
    Adama;
    Early life- born on Caprica with Tauron tradition 60 years before the Fall.
    First Cylon War- Finished Viper pilot training ten years in war. First assignment aboard Galactica as Ensign/Raptor co-pilot. Desired assignment as Vipr pilot believed too headstrong by immediate superiors. First assignment in Operation Clean Sweep; assignment changed to transport Greystone researcher Coster Fosjovik to Archeron of top-secret Ghost Fleet. Archeron found destroyed forcing Adama's Raptor to proceed to Osiris. Volunteered himself and Fosjovik in the battle-landing to Djerba as part of revealed Ghost Fleet Offensive. Osiris destroyed in following battle; Adama safely crash-landed on planet shortly after; successfully reached objective on foot. Fostjovik revealed to be Cylon sympathizer shortly after; Adama confronted/ abandoned sympathizer to later be captured by Cylon forces. Returned to superiors to cover-up military failings of the Ghost Fleet Offensive. First promotion to Lieutenant following offensive; given Mk. 2 Viper call-signed "Husker." Participated in numerous battles two years after Ghost Fleet Offensive. Romantically involved with Raptor pilot Jaycie McGavin during this time. First romance wounded and possibly killed in final battles against the Cylons. Participated in final battle of Operation Raptor Talon; Adama shot down/ ejected in this battle. Landed near Cylon laboratory facility with experimented humans. Witnessed humans transported to Cylon Basestar; Galactica refused to intercept upon sudden declaration broadcast of Colonial/ Cylon Armistice.
    Armistice Era/ Merchant Marine Service- Married first wife Carolanne and fathered two sons; named Zak and Lee Adama. Later relates to Captain Louanne Katraine and desires a daughter. Miltary career declined following the Armistice. Discharged as many servicemen after end of conflict. Served on commercial frieghter on Caprica- Tauron run; met fellow pilot Saul Tigh in this position; Pair forge lasting friendship as well in this position. Used wife's family connections with Colonial Defense Council for reinstated in Colonial Fleet as rank of Captain; promoted to rank of Major before Captain. Later divorced Carolann; later engaged to marry again at time of Fall of the Twelve Colonies. Served as Major aboard Atlantia. Later served as executive officer of Columbia before earning own command aboard Battlestar Valkyrie; Saul Tigh joins him serving as XO. Ordered by Colonial Admiralty as Commander of Valyrie to test Cylon military disposition with covert surveillance mission across the Red Line. Stealthstar discovered by Cylons during this operation; ordered the craft destroyed to prevent capture. Transferred to aging Galactica following previous event. Sons soon after choose to follow in father's footsteps to become Viper pilot. Zak killed in training; began secret relations with Kara Thrace during training leading to son's death; Result causes negative relation between Adama and surviving son; blamed by Lee for forcing dead son into military service. Sparked a father-daughter relationship while in command of decommisioning Galactica; decommission process interrupted by return of the Cylons after 40-year Armistice.
    Fall of the Twelve Colonies- Refused to allow CNP upgrade on Galactica due to experience of similar devices used by Colonial vessels during the First Cylon War; thus decreed no network allowed on Galactica until completed decommision from service to a museum ship. Decision spared Galactica from Cylon infiltration attempts to disable aging battlestar. Initially decides best decision is counterattack following initial reports from the devastated Colonies. Assumes command of remaining fleet following reports of remaining Colonial Fleet led by Atlantia decimated. Re-arms Galactica at Ragnar Ancourage for counterattack following Atlantia's confirmed destruction; instead met by remaining civilian fleet led by Colonial One led by assumed Colonial President Lara Roslin. Urged by Roslin to change Galactica's counterattack to protection of 50,000 survivors convoy on a fleet-wide search for Earth.
    Second Cylon War- (from Battle of Ancourage/ Battle of Resurrection Ship. ) Convinced all remaining Colonial Fleet assets destroyed after final reports from destroyed homes/ fleet; orders Galactica re-armed and its' Viper on museum display re-purposed for service. Leaves the Cyrannus system in Battle of Ragnar Ancourage; Defends/ leads 50,000 survivors fleet on search for Earth; Cylons persue for next 5 days every 33 minutes. First 1300 lives of 50,000 survivors lost with destruction of Olympic Carrier. Resulting stress from final day of initial persuit causes accident aboard Galactica's hangar; orders Thrace to train new pilots to replace lost in accident. Made aware of the full story leading to Zak's death before the Fall; eventually forgives Thrace's for Zak's death from barely able to initially restrain himself. Incident after Thrace shot down on training flight re-cements father-son relations with Lee. Later shot by Cylon-agent Boomer; survives assassination attempt with no post-traumatic change. Confronts Rear Admiral Cain over treatment of Galactica's crew after found by Pegasus. Both commanders come to brink of shooting at either battlestar after threatened execution of Carol Agathon and Galen Tyrol. Makes plans to assasinate Cain after consulting President Roslin over shared concern. Later decides not to execute Cain's assassination after Battle of Resurrection Ship; kill order carried out by Gina instead. Promoted to Admiral following Cain's death; surprised in moment after nearly gave up hope attaining a flag rank after all service years in his career.
    Cain
    Early life- born on Tauron- child on Cylon-blockaded Colony during early First Cylon War. Parents killed/ sister abducted by Cylons during early era. Post- traumatic witness of entire birth family killed/ abducted forges her into a razor.
    First Cylon War- Sores through ranks faster than young Adama during late era of the war. (Exact service history unknown during this era.)
    Armistice Era- Gains flag rank of Admiral in command of Battlestar Pegasus/ 62nd Battlestar Group of Colonial Fleet (BSG-62)
    Fall of the Twelve Colonies- docked aboard Pegasus at Scorpio Shipyards for months-long overhaul; Critical systems down due to overhaul spares Pegasus from Cylon-infiltrated CNP. Rushed to CIC after opening strikes on still-docked battlestar; Five other moored ships- two of them battlestars-destroyed on attack of Scorpio Shipyards. Orders Pegasus to emergency underway to blind-jump immediately after; Jump-out location beyond Armistice Line from previous location. 723 crewmen lost with several equipment and Vipers damaged in aftermath. Orders Raptor flight to confirm situation from Colonies following immediate aftermath; flight returns with confirmed destruction of Colonies. Speeches entire Pegasus crew that war is their imperative.
    Second Cylon War (from Battle of Relay Station-Battle of Resurrection Ship) Ordered cavalry charges wherever Cylon fleets massed before abandoning each area. Manipulated by Cylon agent Gina Inviere into jumping Pegasus into Cylon staging post masquerading as lightly-defended communication post; Heavy Viper casualties suffered as a result. Refused to retreat Pegasus from Battle of the Relay Station; executed executive officer Colonel Belzen refused order to launch all reserve Vipers; made Colonel Fisk new XO; he does not refuse previous order out of fear of authority. Later encounters a small fleet of civilian ships; views non-combatant ships as tactical risk. Orders the ships cannibalized for spare parts/ non-compliant refugees executed. Cannibalized/ abandoned ships from Pegasus stripped of any FTL drives to escape passing Cylon fleets. Eventually discovers a large fleet shadowed by Pegasus several months after the Fall. Orders Pegasus jump ahead to ambush initially-assumed Cylon fleet; discovers the fleet Colonial led by Galactica. Initially reunion soon follows, but is soured by refused failure to send materials to Galactica's civilian fleet. Re-assigned Galactica crews to Pegasus for reasons relating to Adama's command style/ failed to adequately punish officers for interactions due to crew shortage. Crew transfer disputes lead to the death of Lt. Alastair Thorne by Lt. Karl Agathon and Deck Chief Galen Tyrol; orders both transferred to Pegasus for pending execution. Refused to spare men after failed persuasion by Adama; forced Adama's hand to stage a rescue operation to get his men against Admiral's authority. Following standoff ended by unauthorized recon mission from Thrace aboard the Blackbird; Returned flight reveals a Cylon Resurrection Ship. Sighting confirmed by interrogation of Cylon prisoner Gina. Declares uneasy truce with Galactica's fleet authority to mount attack against Resurrection Ship; meanwhile plots assassination of Adama during plan to attack Resurrection Ship Calls off kill order after Resurrection Ship destroyed in Battle of the Resurrection Ship; executed by Gina realeased by Baltar soon after. Authority of Pegasus later transferred to Lee Adama.

    Maybe Cain was too used to getting her own way, but wouldn't the 'integration' of Pegasus into the fleet make her question the issue of her authority under 'detached service'? Apart from being a great combinaation of drama and music, this scene is also a great case of two opposing leadership styles. Cain's style is in line with her position as an admiral; 'hard-arse' and by-the-book whereas Adama's is supporting the people under his command.

      , but it seemed pretty clear she didn't recognize Rosalin or the fleet based government she had established, nor did she recognize the fleet Adama had. Her language used through out the episode reflected it "welcome back to the fleet" despite being one ship, and yeah her stating she's on detached service while Adama and Rosalin are treating the fleet like a mobile colony. Her strategy was never going to be self sustaining. If she had managed to kill Adama and take control of galactica, the entire fleet would have been cannibalized eventually.

    Poor choice by Cain to choose execution. Galactica had been through alot alone and her fighting capabilities almost matched Pegasus. Adama would of been reluctant but had no moral footing to stand his ground against her.

      I know this is 4 years old.. but no, Galactica will not "gets its ass handed to them". Pegasus has all the guns anyone can ask for, but Galactica has a heavy solid defense grid and armor plating. The Jupiter class are designed to put up walls of flak that are inconceivable to us. Pegasus wouldn't be able to penetrate that without driving right through it, which would knock many of her guns out, leaving both ships to slug it out at close range making it an equal fight. Also, Admiral Cain have never won a single war game against the older Jupiter Class ships like Battlestar Galactica. If Pegasus had a competent commander then the fight would be a drew or one ship will end up being crippled beyond repair.

    Admiral Cain shouldn't have acted to reactively. She should have allowed the marines to land in the Pegasus hanger, gone to meet them personally - along with a complement of her own marines, and asked these Marines if they were willing to defy their commander in chief. Asked them whether their oath was to Adama or to the Colonies. And even dared them to storm her flagship. If their answer was still 'yes' - that's mutiny, and Adama ordered them to do it.

      Yes, of course it makes sense to have *some* Vipers on alert status, but are you constantly going to keep 40 manned fighters in the tubes? Forty pilots that are constantly strapped into their cockpits? How many fighter pilots did the Galactica even have? I think a much lower number, say 8 to 10, would have been much more realistic.
      You know, pilots have to eat, sleep and do other things, too.

  • @yiany
    @yiany 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    To be fair though this is not the first time Adama let his personal attachment to the crew clouding his judgement. Did Cylon commit genocide against the 12 colonies? Are they not on the run from a massively superior enemy? Is secrecy of your location the only reason your fleet is still alive? Then considering all the above, should you really keep a Cylon prisoner alive just because one day she might be in the new Hawaii-O-Five? If I were Adama I would have tossed Grace Park right out of the airlock like the President ordered. You simply do not give second thoughts or take chances toward an enemy that has kicked your ass as hard as Cylon has.
    Naturally, Cain isn't unbiased herself, and quoting regulation established by the civilian government while refusing to aid the civilian ship previously gave her no position to argue on lawful ground. Had the knowledge of Cain's action came to light, she should have been arrested right away. After initial co-operation with her, Adam should have listened to Roslin's suggestion and try to remove her from power and throw every senior officers on Pegasus into the brig. His indecisiveness allowed the situation spiral out of control and a civil war was only avoided by dumb luck (if they didn't waste time on a stealth ship that might or might not work, if they didn't know about the resurrection ships, and if Starbucks didn't fly back in time... the fleet would have killed itself.)
    And one last thing: Adama couldn't bring himself to let his crew members executed but had no problem destroying the Olympian Carrier. Then he risked half of the fleet later to save one little girl? Wasn't there also a little girl on that fleet they abandoned in the very first episode? Once again, personal attachment. Somehow Boomer and her kid is more important than the safety of the entire fleet. Granted, they asked only for volunteers for the last rescue mission, but allowing THAT many volunteers to join him is a problem in itself.
    And tossing everything into the sun for a fresh start? Are you kidding me, Adama? You are supposed to erect huge monuments telling your offspring how not to build robots and stuff, instead you erased every trace of your previous mistakes so your children can repeat the same mistake in the future.

      Pegasus was going out for its patrol right before this happened. When the conversation starts you can see they have pulled ahead and by the time the conversation is over they're far away. Top speed for these ships is around 1000 kilometers per second so Pegasus could be far away very fast if it wanted.

    I was hoping that Adama would have killed Cain himself. She's a psychopath

    In and of itself this was such a good scene. And I love the music. But in the grand scheme it highlighted a problem the show had. There are less than 50,000 people left, out of billions. That's like a large town. They Cylons are working very hard to wipe out those last 50,000. And the humans are [yet again] turning on each other. If I were the cylons I wouldn't even waste the time attacking them. I'd just stay close enough to keep them tense and let them eat each other.
    I know, I know. The show was meant to be a commentary on our modern world and blah blah blah same thing every show does. But in this case it just never really felt right considering what was at stake.

    Admiral Cain was so hot in that scene. Especially when she said I don't take orders from you.
