I work in a micro lab and a small flame of an alcohol burner is not going to give you a small sterile area around the burner. In fact any upward movement of air by thermal rise is just going to bring the particles into your area faster from lower in the air column.
Because in that small area of upward rise isn't enough heat to kill anything that's already sanitized? Have you heard of oven tech for in the home?
This video is very much a super informative "bill nye the science guy" personality with much more inner dialogue that I go through. Couldn't have come at a better time

I spent years doing sensitive wet work in a biology lab. Your advice for sterile work is better than anything I’ve seen before. I wish I had seen this video before having to learn things to hard way.

Learning on TH-cam has been a challenge. A lot of the growers are also selling mentorships and consults. It seems like much of their content is just feeding you enough information to get you interested in a paid mentorship (nothing wrong with that). This video is the first one that I found that went into detail and specific processes in this much depth. This is after watching dozens of hours of content from other channels.

I know a lot of folks use mushrooms for natural dyes, but mostly just foraged specimens. Haven't come across cultivators specifically growing for that purpose, but no reason not to try it!

I totally agree about the blades, it’s setting us up for injuries! I think I’m going to start using pliers to hold the blade when changing them out, for added safety.
@@dcfromthev Thank you! For some dumb reason that thought never even occurred to me. I'm legally blind, can only see partially out one eye and I always feel like I'm about to stab myself while changing them. Very tedious.
No joke, when I opened the handle the first time, I thought it was defective. I was like... this is IT?? You've got to be kidding me. Seems like a design that hasn't changed in the last 600 years or so, it just seems incredibly unsafe. (even for people who can see just fine)

Making music with them, out of their impulsing signals, plastic eating bacteria, mushroom hat, mycelium motherboards and labyrint solving mushrooms! We are getting there!

I'd suggest getting your info somewhere else. Anyone suggesting an alcohol flame in open air over a properly constructed SAB is pretty suspect. Basic physics demonstrates the relative effectiveness of a still(er) air container over just doing your work right out in the soup that is the air around you. Think: is it better to work in an almost entirely enclosed space where the contaminants have settled to the bottom of your enclosure and only your hand motions stir them or in the open air where air currents (including alcohol lamp's currents) and the air being ejected from your lungs are continously stirring up contaminants from the floor and other surfaces? No offense intended to the videomaker but SABs are required if you don't have a flowhood and you want to keep contamination to a minimum.

Simply awesome! Like you said... a lot of info. But one thing I was wondering; do you soak the grain before inoculation? Or just let the mycelium devour the sterile grain? It took me two days to get all the way through, but it was worth it. Keep up the good work. I look forward to checking out more of your videos. Oh, I just noticed a deep dive on how to make grain spawn 😊 Guess that's my next stop!

One thing that I can add as a possible improvement is the use of grafting tape instead of parafilm. Cheaper, easier and mycelium doesn't need to breathe.

Extra Tip- remove any rings/bracelets that can get in the way/contam/or break gloves
Nice contribution to the growing community. Thanks! Pro tip...bag the Parafilm and just use grafting tape. Dirt cheap and easier to work with. A twist or 2 before you break it will make the ends easy to find.
Cheap cling wrap works fine as a parafilm alternative.

Hey, thanks for the great content. I saw you store your uninoculated plates in a tall ziploc-style bag. Can you tell me more about those and where you get them? I've been searching for better plate storage solutions and wrapping a whole stack with cling wrap just isn't secure enough for me.
