Pressure Cookers & Sterilization for Mushroom Cultivation (Plus a Low-Tech Alternative)
As you take a deep dive into the exciting world of DIY mushroom cultivation, you’ll probably want to invest early on in a pressure cooker or autoclave for sterilizing all your growth medium. There are a lot of options out there, so we made this video to help you make an informed decision, learn how they work, and consider some great alternatives to sterilization.
A pressure cooker will allow you to make your own grain spawn, agar plates, liquid culture, and bulk substrates, saving you money and helping you deepen your connection with your mushrooms.
In this detailed how-to video, we’ll discuss sterilization methods and why they’re important. Then we’ll compare the pros and cons of a variety of different pressure cookers to help you choose which one is right for you, including Instant Pot, Presto canners, All American brand sterilizers, and affordable commercial autoclaves. We’ll also talk about pressure cooker safety and offer some tips for working with mushroom grow bags.
In part 2, we’ll go over standard operating procedures, explaining how to safely use a pressure cooker for a variety of different mushroom cultivation applications. This section includes specific information for using Instant Pot and All American pressure canners.
At the end, we’ll also show you a useful method for making grain spawn and other mushroom substrates without a pressure cooker, using a form of fractional pasteurization called tyndallization. Not only is this a good budget option for the hobby grower, this technique can also help you scale up by using a bulk pasteurizer. We’ll wrap up with some ideas for how to build one and why this is a great project for off-grid mushroom cultivators.

Shrooms saved me from depression, anxiety and severe ptsd. Much respect to mother nature the great magic shrooms.
I love hearing great life changing stories like this. I want to become a mycologist because honestly mushrooms are the best form of medicine (most especially the psychedelic ones) There are so many people today used magic mushrooms to ween off of SSRI medication- its amazing! Years back i wrote an entire essay about psychedelics. they saved you from death buddy, lets be honest here.
Can you help me with the reliable source 🙏. I'm 56 and have suffered for years with addiction, anxiety and severe ptsd, I got my panic attacks under control myself years ago and they have come back with a vengeance, I'm constantly trying to take full breaths but can't get the full satisfying breath out, it's absolutely crippling me, i live in Germany. I don't know much about these mushrooms. Really need a reliable source!! Can't wait to get them
Yes sure of Pedroshrooms
I'm so very happy for you mate, Psilocybin is absolutely amazing, the way it shows you things, the way it teaches you things. I can not believe our world and our people shows less interest about it's helpfulness to humanity. It's love. The mushrooms heals people by showing the truth, it would be so beneficial for so many people, especially politicians and the rich who have lost their way and every other persons out there.
Where do I reach this dude? If possible can I find him on Google
You got a rare like+sub from me. Fantastic content, my friend!
We are not worthy!
amazing, thanks a lot!
Why polyfill instead of micropore tape?
Thank You
Suggested ratio: 16 fl oz. (475 mL) honey per 1 oz. (28g) dried mushrooms.
Sure you didnt already inhale a bit of mushroom dust at like 7:40? Lmaoo
I’m glad you spoke on bio accumulation this seems to be treated as a non-issue amongst cultivators and consumers
Just ordered the parts for this. Thank You!!!
No gypsum in the soak? cup of coffee?
Please keep making videos. They're important, highly qualitative, and fun !
This not laminer
Just so many ideas and new information, I will definitely have to watch again tomorrow (with a pen and paper). The video on making plates is also excellent. If you're a shroomer, its a must! And many thanks to the creator for his time, energy, dedication and selflessness (a commodity in very short supply these days.)
Love the padawan braid. Though you are a Master of Mycology!
Thanks Paul! I revisit these often to refresh memory.

Your videos are connecting some many dots for me. Thank you for your time and effort to share the knowledge you have attained 💙
For Agar, I have always used a microwave for sterilizing.

Great stuff. Thanks.
youre like my geeky younger bro but one who made it and even more wackier. i love your videos cos i am never taking myself too seriously. you make it all fun basically. one peace peace out
i dub you Paul 'Walker' of Fungaia, master grower and one strong with spore force. Thanks man this helps 10K.
The only complaint I have is around that rat-tail....😂😂😂😂 I'm just busting balls.
This is the best mushroom intro video I've ever seen.... posting on MycoMafia!
the pirate impression is hilarious
After watching about 6 of your videos I must say, you sir have cultivated one of the best mushroom related channels I’ve ever seen on the internet. From the fantastic detailed explanations to your wonderful humor, I can’t state enough how awesome you’re channel is!! Thank you and please keep making videos!
What is the spawn to substrate ratio you used in the video?
This channel is a gold mine of information
From your intro, I thought you were going to show the many uses of the honey, like baking bread, only to realize at the end you were de-gassing it, lol!!
Hey! You are awesome! The best and most thorough and educational video guides I've ever come across on TH-cam
This guy is awesome. He teaches it all but the mushroom community as a whole is great. They always offer help and information. Hey man I have a envirco Mac 10 XL 2*4 flow hood. It is my first hood, how do you recommend cleaning the face of it. I got it refurbished from nothing but air. They are highly rated and known in the community. Has brand new filters and was cleaned. I just want to know how I should clean the grill of it. I know you don't want the filter material getting wet.
10/10 video
Thank you for the videos!! ❤❤ They're super helpful!
BEST video i have seen yet ! Thank you
Do you have any evidence or proof that adding your substrate or all of that extra stuff makes any difference? Or helps the mycelium to 'recognize it later' as you say? I'm just curious.
When growing in a tent, use a 4" vent fan for intake and hepa filter the air. This would create a positive pressure sterile air environment for the cost of a hepa filter and fan. After pressure cooking, I put the medium directly into a monotub hot and used the heat to disinfect the monotub. Ready to inoculate. Almost every video I've seen about inoculating, people aren't using a mask. Gloves are important but, masking is too. Breathe onto a mirror, the exhaled moisture gets into and onto the material people are working with. I'd wager, this specific issue is causing infections.
Just came randomly across this channel. Dude, i know a lot of fungi channels....but your content is fire!
I use glass petris and the "no pour" technique. The condensation is definitely a thing, but once it's cool enough to be solid, I pick the dishes up, holding the top/bottom together, drain off any obvious water, then put them upside-down in a small monotub with the holes uncovered--no parafilm or plastic wrap yet. A few days like that, and the worst of the water evaporates if you're not in the jungle. Not perfect, but worth it/good enough for me. The glass petris are expensive, but you can eventually go through thousands of the plastic ones, and it's super wasteful.
Super cool 🎉
I’ve been studying this videos for a few days now. So much info, definitely have a notebook handy. Thank you for your enthusiasm, and information
Love what your doing and how you're doing it
I wish i had found your channel first, before i seen others. I could've avoided a few issues and had confidence at times i didn't.
Where do you get your spawn bags with injection ports?
Hey man, we use unicorn bags and add the injection ports. We use those little rubber furniture buttons you can buy that go on like cabinet doors. Hope this helps!
@_fungaia thanks! What size spawn/grow bags do you guys do for best yields? Like 10lb, 5lb, etc? Thanks 😊
Man, I cant find anyone who has a good ME to water ratio! This guy says 2% sugar...does he mean glucose or any sugar? Because ME has starches and enzymes that exponentially increase the simple sugar content. So thise 10g of DME will yield way more than 2% "sugar". My search continues 😢
love your guide and I was really surprised by the amount of knowledge you have. Its obvious that you not only have done your research but you are passionate about the craft and you clearly have experience :) One thing I want to add as my personal opinion though is that with petri dishes its better to not let the mycelium grow to the outer edges. If I notice that my plates are almost fully colonized I will try to just use them to inoculate some bags or something but I wouldnt use them for more lab work.
Appreciate the kind words! I'll pass the tip on up, I haven't heard of that before. Sounds worth looking into.
I really need to try this BLAGAR recipe 😊 By the way, how much activated carbon did you add to 500ml of water?
Wish you where in or had a base in South Africa and Zimbabwe. They a lot of small scale mushroom farmers and enthusiasts who would really like to learn from you and buy some of your equipments
Your videos are so informative, clear and concise. Thanks
Would vegetable glycerin or propylene glycol provide an oxygen environment enough to preserve them for longer period? ... and on a similar note what if you were to purge the storage vessel of oxygen say purchase with nitrogen or CO2 would anoxia preserve the product for longer period
