Ronin Dave The way I see it is The problem itself is engrained in the fabric of our society, it will be generations before it starts to really fade! He should have never been arrested, that was bad, But at least he's not dead. That's Worse!
So the officer that turns up tells him he's under arrest... When he's asked why he pulls a confused face and looks to his colleague. Don't you need a reason to arrest? Can't get arrested in the UK for walking in the street, pity I don't live in the USA... Land of the free. What a joke.
@@valuecalc No, that was wrong. You don't lie about an arrest. That's how people get killed. You do your job right and the situation won't have to needlessly escalate.
I hope many of you remember this video, and then know that this happens to poor blacks in the inner city ALL THE TIME. Police essentially stop them from anything like "obstructing sidewalk traffic" to "fitting a suspect's description". It serves several purposes as picking people off the streets in the inner city can result in often finding people with warrants. They just sweep the streets, and sort through the picked up people later. If they have a warrant against them, then its great for the police because they get an arrest. If the people they collect don't have a standing warrant, then they have all these bogus charges which the poor people go to court for. They are then fined, and the court piles a court fee on that fine in order to squeeze out more money. Problem is, poor people don't often have the money, so the simple solution is to keep adding onto that fine until they end up owing a ridiculous amount of money to the city. Of course, this works even better in states where people can go to prison for not paying a fine. People are forced to go on probation instead (privatized), and the probation usually forces them to get drug tests and wear a tracker in order to charge them for these things. So they end up owing thousands of dollars for a small fine. America, where we give to the rich, and steal from the poor until they are ground to dust.
Plus if you're in a state where you can go to jail for not paying fines, then you get sent to a privatized jail. Privatized jail is great! The companies that own them get more money for having more beds filled... ya like that's not a conflict of interest at all. All the Justice System is is a revolving door to collect and make money off of (mainly poor) people. Utah has things called Justice Courts that they created to free up State District Courts. City Justice Courts can only hear infractions, Class C and Class B Misdemeanors. Class A Misdemeanors and higher go to State District Court. Anyway, about ten years ago there was a Justice Court Judge near where I lived that lost his judgeship because he was sending people with marijuana tickets and DUI's (any drug related offense) to a treatment center that he partly owned.
I'm white (and Native American, but it's not obvious), and if I were doing the same thing, I can guarantee you I would have been treated very differently. As the woman with the camera suggested, the officer would have just told me to use the sidewalk that wasn't under construction across the street. That's it.
Glad you never experienced what other people of color experience. Doesn't matter if you throw a tantrum, you should not be arrested. So much for the land of the Free, right? And the idiot who made a comment data doesnt prove anything? 1/3 Black men are likely to get arrested because they are black. Driving while black and per this video WALKING while black!
Benjamin Roberts I was Jay walking on a railroad once and was stopped by the cops. They essentially just told me to get off the railway and back onto a sidewalk. It's only anecdotal, but I'm white and my similar situation had an incredibly different result.
What should the cops have done? Allow to let the drunk guy keep on walking on the road even after they tried to signal him to stop? He even tried to pass their car when they used it to try to block his way. The cops were only doing their job.
+Ronald Nelson He wasn't drunk. But apparently some racist feels that he has to make something up because it's kinda obvious that the arrest wasn't justified.
Ronald Nelson From the police departments facebook: "The officer smelled alcohol on the man’s breath during the incident. A breathalyzer later confirmed the presence of alcohol."
***** Apparently he was; a sage man, that Einstein fellow. Though I personally wouldn't say that racism is a white person disease. You can be racist and be of any creed or skin color, however, the white man was one to use it most lastingly and devastatingly.
I'm a Federal Agent and I see people walking in the street all the time. You know what I do? I hit my sirens so they know I'm behind them. Drive up next to them, put my window and remind them that we have a drunk driving problem and kids texting while driving. The side of the road is for bike traffic so you should use the sidewalk for your own safety. They get on the sidewalk I say thanks and be safe then I leave. Sometimes they yell at me for "harassing" them. At that point I say hey just looking out for you and drive off. They're not violating a federal crime and I don't enforce city ordinance so I simply leave. Local cops have no idea how to deal with people. That's problem number one. There's no need for me to put my hands on anyone when having a simple conversation.
BlackBullRising *"I hit my siren so they know I'm behind them. Drive up next to them, put my window and remind them we have a drunk driving problem... "* So, you put on your siren and ask them to move to the sidewalk? You mean, kinda like the officer in the story did? "Police say the officer recognized a public safety risk, so he pulled his car behind the man with his lights and signal on in an attempt to advise him to get out of the roadway. Police said Thomas turned and looked at the officer and continued walking in the traffic lane. According to police, the officer drove in front of the man and stopped about 15 feet in front of him to block him from continuing to walk in traffic, but they say Thomas continued to walk in the driving lane and “did not stop and was defiant” when an officer got out of the car and began to follow him." It's almost like they asked him to move to the sidewalk and he didn't listen....
"It's almost like..." isn't actually doing it. Here's the problem we don't know where he was walking. He says he was on the opposite (right side) of the white line. The officer says he was in the street (left of the white line). This is where you get into he said she said in court, which no body likes because the Judge typically sides with the cop. So if the cop hit the siren, he looked back and kept walking its because he felt as if he was in the right. I would do the same thing. The point is the officer could've stayed in the car. Like I said its what I do all time. That way there is no doubt that I'm talking to you. 99% it works perfectly I don't get any lip they go to the sidewalk and I go about my day. Everyone once in a while I get lip and I just simply drive off because I've got better things to do like serve federal arrest warrants.
Bazuuka Joe So what? There was ZERO reason for an officer to even approach him...cops are just assholes who feel the need to overpower people into submission
He can't just blink onto a sidewalk. He was already in the street. Where was he supposed to go but to keep walking out of the construction area? Isn't that what the officer should have wanted him to do?
BlackBullRising Wait, so thinking you're "in the right," somehow gives one the ability to disobey police orders? There is so much wrong with that logic. Lmao So I guess if an officer stops me to ask questions about a robbery that occurred in the area I can just ignore him and keep walking because I know I didn't do anything wrong, right?
The worst part of this video is when the second officer turns up and just says "Your under arrest, my colleague already said your under arrest" - Just an outright LIE. This guy was _literally_ arrested for walking while black. Land of the free....
I am gunna get crap from some people for saying this, but having an officer put his hands on you so suddenly verses just explaining what I had done wrong, would have made me upset as heck as well. I am not condoning arguing and resisting a cop. Saying all that, it has to got to be beyond frustrating to be hassled like that. I am glad the mayor of the city issued a statement. And I am happy that this man did not need to go to jail. A formal apology by this cop or the department for the officer acting insensitively would have been nice I.m.o.
Jeremy Beckerman Now that's so true, that's a cool lady, fearless too.Stood up for someone she didn't know,if all of America was like that;there would be peace and love.Imagine people respecting others and their belongings, what a wonderful world it would be.Stay blessed live long, and always stay strong, because the poor and weak are prime targets.
I don't know why these blacks get so upset when facing tyranny at the hands of the state. They should comply with all orders, legal or not. And stand for that flag when we tell them to. Who do they think they are? Free citizens? ;)
Only a racist would think that a a white cop wanting to talk to him, about jaywalking down a street with construction instead of using the footpath on the otherside of the road, is somehow rooted in racism. If the cop wanted to be 'tyrannical' he could have easily gotten physical when the guy was acting like an aggressive dick and threatening the cop, but he didn't.
Only in America! why did I say that? would the police even bother with you doing the same as this man in the UK? France? Canada? Mexico? Brazil? Spain? Sweden? Germany? China? Switzerland? the answer is no, the police wouldn't have even wasted their own time on this.
J-sòlèy to be honest Canada has its problems especially with how it treats aboriginals but as for as humane society I am happy to be Canadian... and seeing these videos just justify my case...
okay, to be fair, I'll be the devils advocate here: ALL races have been very cruel to each other in their respective days! the white race only documented it far better than all the others and their cruelties have been comitted later in time - it even goes on in this current day, so it basically never ended.
What do you mean the white race only documented it far better? let's talk about today, here and now, nobody is talking about yesterday or inserting caveat's, is a simple question, is this acceptable policing regardless of who it is? the answer is clearly no. edit: to show how prevalent this type of behaviour happens people will automatically video the incident because they instinctively know mistreatment is about to occur, that's damning in itself.
You are correct about all races having blood on their hands. But there's a level of wickedness that only whites have reached. It's as though it's easy for whites to dehumanise people, even other whites. The Spanish inquisition comes to mind. The Aborigines, Africans, Indians, etc, have no such history. I don't know if it's because of the lack of spiritual grounding or what? Or is it because of weather and lack of resources? Why is it that only whites come up with movies like Saw, and so many other deplorable titles. Asians, Indians, Africans, and South Americans don't produce such movies. What's with some white people's minds? There's white people that I respect and love like John Pilger, Tim Wise, John Brown, etc, who have compassion for fellow humans. Then you have Vlad the Impaler, and a plethora of rapists, pedophiles and sodomisers who hide in the church of all places. Raping 4yr old children, raping nuns, sodomising alter boys. And exporting homosexual behaviour to places it never existed.
@ J-soley I live in Canada and I run on the same side of construction I have never had a police go out of their way to tell me to move on the other side. Even if they did, they wouldn't do this? One time, I was outside of the club. I'm on my phone and walking backwards. A police officer was standing there and watching me. I happen to look up and catch him looking at me and motions with his finger to walk back towards him. I look behind and realized I was about to step off the curb. So he was preventing me from hurting myself. That was my personal experience. I'm not saying all officers in Canada do this because there are some bad ones. That's all the officer had to do - ask the man to walk on the other side of the street for his own safety. That's it!
El Jefe one thing about racist white folks they are full of deception and lies like you are. Their cognitive ability is lacking. But you most certainly do have the appropriate profile photo that's for sure knucklehead
I see a lot of people on here making comments, white or black making jokes about this and I'm wondering why. Some shit needs to stay serious!!!! FACTS!!!!
What a crime. Never seen something so bad as someone walking in the street. Omg this horrible. End of days are near. Hide your kids from the pavement. It's dangerous.
....in my country the construction company is required to post clear and precise signage when the sidewalk is closed and directions to : use the other sidewalk : .....in many instances when traffic is likely to be a safety issue to the general public....then flag people are posted to assist the flow of traffic.....but wait....its America...a third world nation of so called entitlement and as such do not have the brains to do the right thing....
HYPR QWYK yeah its the construction peoples job to close the sidewalk and who is to say you cant walk on the street? im sure construction workers are in and out of the truck he walked by on the same exact side he walked on.
Jude Fahley yes it is. this might surprise you, but here it's the construction companies job to make the site safe for pedestrians. I know America is somewhat slow to adopt common sensw, but this is basic health and safety. if you remove a pedestrian walk way you provide a safe alternative.
Chris Wallace in some of our more western progressive states likes colorado that carries true. please dont get the wrong impression of the country for what it was attended to be for what it is now. To add not all its white men and people in general are ignorant bigots in this country. Morons are plentiful in the states but there still is hope.
Dude a cop pulled me over and gave me a ticket for not signaling when he pulled me over. How do I know that's why he gave me the ticket??? Because he told me so when he gave me the ticket. It sucks being black in Amerikkka.
Excellent idea! I was thinking I'd go back to Africa...What do you think? List of things you will need to provide me with:1 Plane ticket (first class would be nice but I'll fly coach). 2 Start up money, $50,000 will suffice (though I would prefer $100,000). For further details on how to finance my episode so I can get out of your shitty country please provide your email address. Thank you kind sir.
Sal Moore , how about a bag of skittles and a shirt that says hands up don't shoot, and another shirt that says "Can't breathe"....let's see how far that gets you in your wonderful Africa where daily millions die of starvation and AIDS, and where millions die from dictators that commit genocide in their country. Also, where police and military kill thousands of people for no apparent reason and their is no million dollar lawsuits to compensate for the corruption. Also, there is no Nelson Mandela like there is in south Africa, there's only dictators that will kill any opponent in a whim by having you shot in the head in front of thousands of kids and families. There is no police man saying you're under arrest put your heads behind your back, there's just corrupt police and military that you will just simply disappear or just shot in broad day light and if anyone protests they too will get a bullet in their head. This is the Africa you so long for. please leave today..
The lady is great for recording this and defending him when the officers refuses to listen to him. Also, telling the officer what he SHOULD'VE done instead of harassing the man.
daniel Last Actually, yes, there is. Asians are considered "model minorities", and, while not as all encompassing as white privilege, they do experience privileges like being much more likely to get into a college than other people with a similar application.
So let's see...If I'm driving I get pulled over, possibly arrested for no reason. If I'm walking and a car as to slow down even the slightest amount to let me cross, I'm arrested on the spot. If I stand still and don't do anything, I'm "loitering" and I'll get arrested. Got it.
The most upsetting thing is that its illegal to arrest someone and not inform them of the charges and that police officer who informed the man of his arrest just says my partner says tour under arrest. So now they can just go around arresting people without even giving a reason. This is blatant abuse of power.
I once was stopped while driving and when I asked why he said " Why are you not speeding don't drive the speed limit here" and this was a place that was famous for speeding ticket. When he said that I was just like 0_o.
The guy cannot win, if he crosses the street to walk on that sidewalk he gets arrested for jaywalking and if he walks on the road because the sidewalk is blocked on his side he gets arrested for what.... obstructing traffic?
Most people aren't arrested for this, but once you start trying to walk away, pull away, screaming, and hit a squad car with your bag, you're lucky if you're only arrested and not tackled.
this "police officer" had no reason to be touching this man at all, he was clearly escalating the situation. and behaving like a thug. when there is construction happening on the street it can sometimes be difficult to figure out where to walk because there is so much crap everywhere it has happened to me many times, and he gets assaulted and arrested for this?? I hope he sues or at least gets an apology . suspend both officers as well.
The system works fine. The system was not created for black humans. This is more evidence of this. Watch "13" if possible. it's an eye opener. What's frustrating is the lack of accountability and bravery. I have children, and the world will hate them for existing as they are, not for who they are. It sucks.
Folks, someone should start a petition for this cop to apologize or get suspended. I don't buy for a second that he was acting appropriately. I've seen cops be called to a physical fight in progress and not grab anybody that way.
This is the officer: Tim Olson. Let's all write the PD and complain, he needs to be made an example otherwise this will never stop, a slap in the wrist won't do. edinamn.gov/index.php?section=Police-About&deptid=26
"hey mate, your slowing traffic would you please mind using the sidewalk on the other side of the road?" This would happen in any other country in the world.
I wish ignorant people could feel what it's like to profiled from an early age, it changes your entire mentality about the people we pay to serve us and authority in general. I remember my twin brother and I walking home when we were 11 years old and being stopped and questioned about a burglary because my brother, and I quote, "had a black hat and the suspect also had a black hat". How many 11 years olds do you know that are committing burglaries? I can't count how many times I've been accused or questioned in a manner that implies I was stealing or planning to. When I was 4 a laundry mat took my father's money and when he asked to get his change back, the manager said he wanted my dad to check my brother's and my pockets for the quarters. Most people don't realize how profound the cumulative effects of having your early years shaped by stuff like this.
KittJT2 first u can tell in the video there was almost no traffic plus he would have walked back to the sidewalk once he got away from the construction so he didn't break the law 2nd the cop was a dick not respecting him as a man and grabbing him like a little boy for no reason 3rd he didn't resist arrest the cop escalated the situation for no reason 4th what a suprise an ass hole trying to justify the police who was wrong
The guy was intoxicated (something you omitted) and obstructed traffic, walking in the middle of the road, rather than crossing the road and using the sidewalk. The cop rightly wanted to question him, and the guy became confrontational and attacked the cop car. Nothing implied he was getting arrested until he physically hit the cop car.
Woow..now I understand how white americans back in the day could have picknicks after church on sunday while watching a innocent black person being hung, mutilated and burned. Even their gentiles were sold as souvenirs and over 10 people including kids proudly stood under and next to the bodies. The mayor, preacher and the police, smiling for the camera.
+Joseph K, dumbass, that was the police car that was trying to get him to stop. The drunk guy wasn't responding to their signals, and even tried to pass their truck when they tried to block his way with it.
Mayor Jim Hovland, in announcing on Sunday his decision to have the case dropped, acknowledged that "people across the country are expressing concern about how [Thomas] was treated by the Edina police" late Wednesday morning. The city of Edina posted its response late Monday afternoon to requests from the NAACP Minneapolis regarding the incident. The responses came from Hovland, city manager Scott Neal and Police Chief Dave Nelson. Among the requests from the NAACP were that an independent investigation be done regarding the incident and whether any department protocols or state laws were violated, including whether Thomas' civil rights and civil liberties were violated. The group asked that Lt. Tim Olson be suspended without pay pending the outcome of an investigation.
im a black female from Canada and few weeks ago, i was walking on a street where the sidewalk was unavailable. A police car pulled next to me and the officer nicely showed me a safer path and we both when on about our business. Simple
I love the white bystander in this case. Cause she's just like "why in the hell are you people grabbing him in the first place, I seriously don't understand." Let me explain, it's called walking while black.
Ironic that they arrest him for blocking traffic which caused police vehicles to block roads. The dude was clearly trying to get back to the sidewalk once the construction ended but the guy grabbing him was pulling him back into the road. This is so aggravating.
that white dude has a point in that its hard to judge a situation as you have never experienced it before. but in these times, i would really like to insist that black people should make their best efforts to just comply and not acting like this guy acted. because doesn't matter if the cop is racist or poorly trained or just a coward, at the end of the day" cooperating" will allow you to get home safely, while acting like this cat may get you killed by a racist/poorly trained/coward cop. You just need to make an effort " YOUR BEST EFFORT" to not scare the cop, because he may freak out and shot your ass without really even thinking about as these things happen so fast. Sure , the cop may end up going to jail like in some cases, but you will still be dead anyway. MAKE YOUR BEST EFFORT TO COOPERATE WITH POLICE, as at the end of the day, any "racist/poorly trained" issues can be handled in court but a "coward" issue where the cop resort to shoots your ass, will not matter as you will be 6 feet under. KEEP IT COOL, think about your family, and your side chick. especially about your side chick. she gonna be sad.
I call bullshit that cop are trained to de-escalate. The are only trained to escalate through force continuum to have individuals comply with unlawful orders.
Alonzo, so right. I'm a retired black police law officer and at the most we know to say get off the road and keep driving.Give it a minute and it would be be over. Sometime, letting people walk away and talk what you don't like is what what we agreed to, sorry guys!
Had that lady not been there he probably would have been dead. You have all of this shit for "walking in the street" when real criminals could have been doing who knows what.
If I was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct every time I had a bad day and got mad at someone, I'd be in jail forever. We can't just put people in jail because they get mad when they are mistreated. If the law was applied evenly in that regard, me and my entire family, and everyone else I know for that matter, would be rotting in a jail cell for the rest of our lives with a permanent stain on our record.
why the man wouldn't take his hands off him when that was a clear problem he wasn't helping the situation by shouting and yelling the entire time then taking his shirt off
fall to him. The officers escalated what should have been a quick call from the window as they were driving by to a pseudo arrest. We are human beings with human emotions, if we feel wronged we get upset now compound that with the likely fact that this isn't the first time this guy had been harassed by the police and that his infraction was something so small that it shouldn't have warranted so much as a double take he's response is understandable. It's not right that black people (like the woman who's husband was shot in a car right next to her, or Rice's sister, or a man who has been shot while laying on the ground) have to working knowledge of psychology and stress training against armed and "trained" police.
he is confused. That is why the panel said it should be the cop who needed to calm the situation, as opposed to aggravate a confused man. The cop is a trained professional, who should be able to handle a simple situation, unfortunately not the case here. Do not blame the victim.
Come on now these criminals in uniforms are not trained professional...these criminals in uniforms are everyday thugs who commit violations and crimes everyday on duty OFF DUTY.....most call these criminals in uniforms heroes lol
+MIAPhilly Mane what?!! These muthafuckas have to drive their own cars and wear street-clothes. Dude pulled up in the mini-van like it was time for soccer practice.
LATINO ARMY VETERAN 4 TRUMP #INTEGRITY wow...where did you see him with a bottle? when did you hear the cop say I smell alcohol? when you clearly see the injustice and you still side with the accusers?? you truly have to look at yourself in the mirror..it's funny that people like you are so "American values", but don't object when those same "values" are not being honored.
The Marshmallow Man see as how the bystander is taking the black man's side as well as the bystander male....I'm taking the side of the black guy walking along side the construction vehicle because the sidewalk was closed and the cop grabbed him....
Alonzo don't make excuses for this man. We both know as black men that he shouldn't have done it. He walked. While _black_. What the hell was he thinking?
What i just learned from the Police: If i ever see anyone doing anything that may be dangerous, instead of informing them that its dangerous, you should confront them and call the police and escalate the situation as much as possible.
This cop knew that what he was doing was demeaning and disrespectful when he put his hands on a grown man he didn’t verbally direct him he put his hands on this man and began to push him down the street to go in the direction he wanted him to go it’s demeaning it is treating someone like a child that’s how we direct our children this cop no exactly what he was doing he knew that this behavior was gonna get a rise out of this man because no man wants to be treated like a child and this was calculated behavior in order to insight this type of response and then when other officers got there he puffed it up to get himself another arrest. Not to mention the fact that you can tell this police department is quite used to this behavior because the officer who arrived second on the scene did not bother to assess the situation he just jumped out and went hands-on
The cops had no business harassing the man and arresting him for "obstructing traffic" especially when they just park their vehicles in the street completely blocking traffic. But, in all honesty, with him flipping out, screaming and pulling his clothes off in the street... That probably wasn't doing him any favors. I understand his frustration, the cop had no business grabbing him like that. But they probably thought he was mentally ill at that point.
I had an officer stop me because I was riding my bike on the sidewalk, downtown in a college town. He just told me that that it was illegal to ride on the sidewalk and that I had to ride on the street and follow all of the traffic laws like I was driving a car. No arrest. No ticket. No hands on me. No raised voice. And that was appropriate. I was ignorant of the law, not someone who intended to put pedestrians at risk. I was from small city suburbs with no sidewalks, and I reasoned that it would be safer for me to ride on the sidewalk - away from cars. As far as I know, this man wasn't just standing in the middle of the street, blocking traffic. There was no valid reason to handle the situation like those officers did.
*You know it's bad*, when you're black & a white lady, that doesn't know you try to help you out!
If she wasn't there, they could've and probably would've shot him
Jeremy Araya I knew something was wrong, when a random white lady started defending a black man. Dead giveaway!!!
Slim816 Real Talk!
Cappadonna Seriously, once I heard her voice I was like "Damn they doing him dirty" lol
We call that Minnesota Nice ... It's a real thing ... The cops should take a lesson.
If you want someone to get out of the street, how does grabbing him solve the problem? These cops are something else...
and sadly some will shrug their shoulders and say "at least they didn't shoot him" as though that somehow makes the situation better.
AbstracktAlias Not only that, but he DRAGGED the guy FURTHER into the middle of the street
Ronin Dave The way I see it is The problem itself is engrained in the fabric of our society, it will be generations before it starts to really fade! He should have never been arrested, that was bad, But at least he's not dead. That's Worse!
yemo34 every nation has laws but most of them are not fascist about the enforcing of them
they waited for a reason to shoot him
So the officer that turns up tells him he's under arrest... When he's asked why he pulls a confused face and looks to his colleague. Don't you need a reason to arrest? Can't get arrested in the UK for walking in the street, pity I don't live in the USA... Land of the free. What a joke.
Stephen James Hooper
Can't be arrested for arrested walking down the road, those cops were out of line.
***** KOBE D CLOWN Yes... Can I help you? XD
Of course he's being arrested for resisting arrest, silly.
he gave a reason, its cuz his partner said. no more questions necessary *srcsm*
"you're under arrest"
"for what?"
".... my partner said you're under arrest"
THAT is what is wrong with the police.
sandinyourshoes well maybe if those cops stopped acting like animals they wouldn't be in the "jungle" to begin with
mado aaa excellent response
Land, it was a stupid response.
@@valuecalc No, that was wrong. You don't lie about an arrest. That's how people get killed. You do your job right and the situation won't have to needlessly escalate.
@@Greg_Jones_Art, wrong. The thug was acting dangerously and needed to be cuffed.
I'm a black man in America, it isn't easy. I've been stopped for nothing walking home. We should never trust the police point blank.
and I see black men stopped all the time while walking, u can't drive or wall down the damn street
Joseph K chill
You're Spikes lol
Your stupid ass comment has no buisness on this post. Shir is irrelevant as hell to the topic at hand. Get the hell on!
dubtat haha, you're clueless
Plus if you're in a state where you can go to jail for not paying fines, then you get sent to a privatized jail. Privatized jail is great! The companies that own them get more money for having more beds filled... ya like that's not a conflict of interest at all. All the Justice System is is a revolving door to collect and make money off of (mainly poor) people.

I'm white (and Native American, but it's not obvious), and if I were doing the same thing, I can guarantee you I would have been treated very differently. As the woman with the camera suggested, the officer would have just told me to use the sidewalk that wasn't under construction across the street. That's it.
oh you can guarantee that? Cool. Guys we can all go home, this random guy has got it covered.
Umm person of color in America do not get fair treatment by Cops. From personal experience to data validate it.
M Ha Personal experience is subjective and prone to delusion/misconception. Data DOESN'T validate it.
It's only anecdotal, but I'm white and my similar situation had an incredibly different result.
wouldnt the police car parked in the middle of the road obstruct even more traffic lmao
And then the other one comes in to obstruct the traffic of the other lane.
He had been drinking. Wasn't drunk. Under the legal limit.
"Land of the free and the home of the brave."
Hahahahahahahahaha.
"Land of the Free" strikes again!
Land of the Fee and home of the Slave
*****
Apparently he was; a sage man, that Einstein fellow. Though I personally wouldn't say that racism is a white person disease. You can be racist and be of any creed or skin color, however, the white man was one to use it most lastingly and devastatingly.
Vilkku whites only
+theKidAztech is that a brother ali reference or did brother ali reference it
I'm a Federal Agent and I see people walking in the street all the time.
BlackBullRising
*"I hit my siren so they know I'm behind them. Drive up next to them, put my window and remind them we have a drunk driving problem... "*
So, you put on your siren and ask them to move to the sidewalk? You mean, kinda like the officer in the story did?
"Police say the officer recognized a public safety risk, so he pulled his car behind the man with his lights and signal on in an attempt to advise him to get out of the roadway. Police said Thomas turned and looked at the officer and continued walking in the traffic lane. According to police, the officer drove in front of the man and stopped about 15 feet in front of him to block him from continuing to walk in traffic, but they say Thomas continued to walk in the driving lane and “did not stop and was defiant” when an officer got out of the car and began to follow him."
It's almost like they asked him to move to the sidewalk and he didn't listen....
BlackBullRising
Wait, so thinking you're "in the right," somehow gives one the ability to disobey police orders?
There is so much wrong with that logic. Lmao So I guess if an officer stops me to ask questions about a robbery that occurred in the area I can just ignore him and keep walking because I know I didn't do anything wrong, right?
Why is the officer even grabbing him like that lol
because cops are not trained to be nice people, they are trained to escalate
anthony thomas I have no idea. I'm flabbergasted by that.
anthony thomas because he's back
Because he's not arresting him. Duh. ;-)
Easier to shoot, I guess..
The worst part of this video is when the second officer turns up and just says "Your under arrest, my colleague already said your under arrest" - Just an outright LIE. This guy was _literally_ arrested for walking while black. Land of the free....
won, that is a lie. No one is arrested for his race.
sandinyourshoes ^^^ nah, it was a racial issue.
Katie Johnson You WON'T get crap for saying that. It's common sense
The cops should apologize for doing their job?
Katie Johnson I agree 100%! No crap here Katie!
Naskinlahtaaja a white person would not have been touched in that situation that's factual
Naskinlahtaaja you are right. A police officer's job is to harass African American people throughout the country
I applaud the woman behind the camera, I would've been cursing at them non-stop.
She was an idiot who needed to be arrested, too, for obstruction.
The only reason he was released and the statment made is because it was filmed.
You know it!
I don't know why these blacks get so upset when facing tyranny at the hands of the state. They should comply with all orders, legal or not. And stand for that flag when we tell them to.
Who do they think they are? Free citizens?
;)
John Coda people :(
Only a racist would think that a a white cop wanting to talk to him, about jaywalking down a street with construction instead of using the footpath on the otherside of the road, is somehow rooted in racism. If the cop wanted to be 'tyrannical' he could have easily gotten physical when the guy was acting like an aggressive dick and threatening the cop, but he didn't.
Alexander de Montfort How do you know what "only a racist would think"?
He did get physical. You don't think physically grabbing someone is physical?
John Coda LOL, you cannot be serious. Clearly the cop had due reason to restrain this man given his physically aggressive gestures.
He's being sarcastic people. That last line should have made it clear.
@ J-soley
I live in Canada and I run on the same side of construction I have never had a police go out of their way to tell me to move on the other side. That's it!
He didn't do nothing
Hugo Alfonso
The funny part is that he didn't do anything wrong.
El Jefe *rolls eyes*
+El Jefe So the solution to that is for the cop to park in the middle of the road, blocking traffic himself.
El Jefe one thing about racist white folks they are full of deception and lies like you are. Their cognitive ability is lacking. But you most certainly do have the appropriate profile photo that's for sure knucklehead
+Burning Sharknado I love the irony. you can't make this shit up. people from bullshit mountain defending the undefendable.
I see a lot of people on here making comments, white or black making jokes about this and I'm wondering why. Some shit needs to stay serious!!!! FACTS!!!!
TYT are void of facts
Nice meme Bianan, lmao you tards keep circlejerking the same stupid shit all the time
You're blocking the road! (Parks cop car in middle of road)
As I always point out, if it's the citizens that have to be trained how to de-escalate encounters with the police, something is very wrong.
What is this, the 1950's?!
What a crime. Never seen something so bad as someone walking in the street. Omg this horrible. End of days are near. Hide your kids from the pavement. It's dangerous.
don't understand your point....
appears to be sarcasm
....in my country the construction company is required to post clear and precise signage when the sidewalk is closed and directions to : use the other sidewalk : .....in many instances when traffic is likely to be a safety issue to the general public....then flag people are posted to assist the flow of traffic.....but wait....its America...a third world nation of so called entitlement and as such do not have the brains to do the right thing....
I know America is somewhat slow to adopt common sensw, but this is basic health and safety. if you remove a pedestrian walk way you provide a safe alternative.
ttc
Chris Wallace in some of our more western progressive states likes colorado that carries true. please dont get the wrong impression of the country for what it was attended to be for what it is now. To add not all its white men and people in general are ignorant bigots in this country. Morons are plentiful in the states but there still is hope.
Dude a cop pulled me over and gave me a ticket for not signaling when he pulled me over. How do I know that's why he gave me the ticket??? Because he told me so when he gave me the ticket. It sucks being black in Amerikkka.
if it sucks being black in America than get the f%^&* out
Excellent idea!
The Police training isn't the problem...The Police targeting Black People is the problem!!!!
The lady is great for recording this and defending him when the officers refuses to listen to him. Also, telling the officer what he SHOULD'VE done instead of harassing the man.
I bet those charges wouldn't have been dropped if someone hadn't filmed the situation and applied pressure to their organization.
At least give credit to the cop for not shooting him.
He still doesn't get any credit, wtf do you mean
White privilege is having something similar happen to you, but rather the officer told you to walk on the sidewalk.
Also, Kim's T-shirt is pretty darn awesome.
xCr00k3Dx so I'm guessing Asian privilege is real?
I'm from the neighboring town and Edina is a highly Conservative area. This doesn't surprise me, but saddens me.
daniel Last Actually, yes, there is. Asians are considered "model minorities", and, while not as all encompassing as white privilege, they do experience privileges like being much more likely to get into a college than other people with a similar application.
That is how it should be, not a privilege.
So let's see...If I'm driving I get pulled over, possibly arrested for no reason. If I'm walking and a car as to slow down even the slightest amount to let me cross, I'm arrested on the spot. If I stand still and don't do anything, I'm "loitering" and I'll get arrested. Got it.
We can’t win. They will just keep moving the line to confuse us law abiding citizens to fill up jails/gaols and their coffers
Would a loud, angry white guy be treated be the same? I'm generally interested.
If there was construction then the police man was out of line.
The most upsetting thing is that its illegal to arrest someone and not inform them of the charges and that police officer who informed the man of his arrest just says my partner says tour under arrest. So now they can just go around arresting people without even giving a reason. This is blatant abuse of power.
If he crossed the street to walk on the other side then he would be arrested for jay walking. WTH
I once was stopped while driving and when I asked why he said " Why are you not speeding don't drive the speed limit here" and this was a place that was famous for speeding ticket. When he said that I was just like 0_o.
the cops should arrest themselves. they stopped him for "blocking traffic" on foot by blocking traffic with 2 cars.
Cowards with badges doing what they do best: escalate the situation and earn the hate from the public!
The guy cannot win, if he crosses the street to walk on that sidewalk he gets arrested for jaywalking and if he walks on the road because the sidewalk is blocked on his side he gets arrested for what.... obstructing traffic?
I guess a little civility is more expensive than wasted taxpayer money...
He's still alive? Well there's that at least!
thats so weird because everyone that legally parks on the side of the street gets in and out of their car by walking in the street
anonymous its a necessity dumbass
This isn't something to be arrested for. Edina is a wealthy area and they just snatched him up because they could.
Most people aren't arrested for this, but once you start trying to walk away, pull away, screaming, and hit a squad car with your bag, you're lucky if you're only arrested and not tackled.
The cop had no right. A cop looses authority at any point they fail to serve the people.
this "police officer" had no reason to be touching this man at all, he was clearly escalating the situation. and behaving like a thug. when there is construction happening on the street it can sometimes be difficult to figure out where to walk because there is so much crap everywhere it has happened to me many times, and he gets assaulted and arrested for this?? I hope he sues or at least gets an apology . suspend both officers as well.
The system works fine. The system was not created for black humans. This is more evidence of this. Watch "13" if possible. it's an eye opener. What's frustrating is the lack of accountability and bravery. I have children, and the world will hate them for existing as they are, not for who they are. It sucks.
Those cops need to be fired.
+thomas brandon
No. The cops need to be arrested for kidnapping, assault and battery, false imprisonment, violating the guy's civil rights...
The police should have more training on how to be a human.
"hey mate, your slowing traffic would you please mind using the sidewalk on the other side of the road?"
This would happen in any other country in the world.
If the cop was in the right, the PD would release the dashcam video to every news outlet to prove his case.
Why are their squad cars dodge caravans and jeeps? Lol
TheBobobobob123 fr, around Dallas they're riding in 2016 camaros and chargers
Undercover cops
undercover meter maids
I was wondering the same thing.
1) Breaks the law
2) Is a dick to other people (holding up traffic)
3) Doesn't comply with the officer
How is this such a surprise?
KittJT2 first u can tell in the video there was almost no traffic plus he would have walked back to the sidewalk once he got away from the construction so he didn't break the law
2nd the cop was a dick not respecting him as a man and grabbing him like a little boy for no reason
3rd he didn't resist arrest the cop escalated the situation for no reason
4th what a suprise an ass hole trying to justify the police who was wrong
He grab him once he hit the car
ファビオ魔王 You need to watch the video again...
yea that cop should be in jail for those offenses
N9olan The hit the car part was not in the video, theys started recording after
Smh Cops Are Supposed To De-escalate The Situation Not Make It Worse
If you are in a car blocking traffic, you get a ticket at most... but if you are walking and blocking traffic, you get arrested?
The guy was intoxicated (something you omitted) and obstructed traffic, walking in the middle of the road, rather than crossing the road and using the sidewalk.
The cop rightly wanted to question him, and the guy became confrontational and attacked the cop car.
Nothing implied he was getting arrested until he physically hit the cop car.
he was walking on the side to go around a truck dumbass.
trumpites justifying racism whilst complaining about being labelled racists
Woow..now I understand how white americans back in the day could have picknicks after church on sunday while watching a innocent black person being hung, mutilated and burned. Even their gentiles were sold as souvenirs and over 10 people including kids proudly stood under and next to the bodies. The mayor, preacher and the police, smiling for the camera.
+Joseph K, dumbass, that was the police car that was trying to get him to stop. The drunk guy wasn't responding to their signals, and even tried to pass their truck when they tried to block his way with it.
Man! those are stupid excuses you just made up not to admit there is racism in America
Guess I'm not going outside anymore
Usually the the TYT trolls are always the first one to watch the videos.
UGH! SO TRUE...WHY DO I ALWAYS LET THOSE FUCKERS GET ME!!!?? LOL
Gabrihel u must not read the comments it's just trolls
And now we have two police cars blocking traffic ...
Yep he acted like that because he's sick of the abuse. The cop could have assured him that everything is ok and just told him to walk on the pavement
wow its 2016 and people still walk while black
i am shocked
Props to the woman who stood up for him and filmed it
Wait so the cop literally stopped and blocked traffic, because the man was slowing traffic? How does that make any sense? What’s the point?
im a black female from Canada and few weeks ago, i was walking on a street where the sidewalk was unavailable. A police car pulled next to me and the officer nicely showed me a safer path and we both when on about our business. Simple
thats the thing though, you're in Canada. This is America... cops are absolutely atrocious and fear mongering here. not to mention racist.
These officers are the saddest persons on the earth
I love the white bystander in this case. Cause she's just like "why in the hell are you people grabbing him in the first place, I seriously don't understand." Let me explain, it's called walking while black.
Damn America, your country is broken.
This is one of the sickest videos I've ever seen, this enrages my soul down to the core
Silly man, how dare he be black and walk somewhere
Alonzo, so right. I'm a retired black police law officer and at the most we know to say get off the road and keep driving.Give it a minute and it would be be over. Sometime, letting people walk away and talk what you don't like is what what we agreed to, sorry guys!
He was not just walking. He was walking in the MIDDLE of the road.
What's next, breathing while black??
Had that lady not been there he probably would have been dead. You have all of this shit for "walking in the street" when real criminals could have been doing who knows what.
Sad to say, this is just another day.
If I was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct every time I had a bad day and got mad at someone, I'd be in jail forever. We can't just put people in jail because they get mad when they are mistreated. If the law was applied evenly in that regard, me and my entire family, and everyone else I know for that matter, would be rotting in a jail cell for the rest of our lives with a permanent stain on our record.
i walked along side of a construction site near my work. why wasn't i arrested?
Wait is she wearing a D.Va shirt?
Yes: instagram.com/p/BLuY_krF2ki/
why the man wouldn't take his hands off him when that was a clear problem
he wasn't helping the situation by shouting and yelling the entire time then taking his shirt off
fall to him.
Interesting cop cars and uniforms in this town...
+MIAPhilly
Mane what?!! These muthafuckas have to drive their own cars and wear street-clothes.
Dude pulled up in the mini-van like it was time for soccer practice.
lol, damn sure did
Someone once said that some neighborhoods are so dangerous that he walks in the street to "avoid getting jumped."
Sir, you are being a perfectly innocent citizen walking on the street, so... I'm gonna need to arrest you.
what kind of COPS are those???
Ones that got all Ds in high school & didn't pass the physical to get into the military.
+Nez The most accurate description of cops like these I've ever seen.
WASN'T THIS DUDE INTOXICATED AND ACTING STUPID? TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS
freedom1234573 go around some black people and show them this comment you typed.
LATINO ARMY VETERAN 4 TRUMP #INTEGRITY responsibility for walking
YOU'RE GOING TO LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE NOV 8TH!!!!!!! HA HA
no you moron
Why did he have to take off his shirt? Why were they strip searching him in public?
He took off his shirt because the cop won't stop grabbing him. That would make anybody angry.
Sad. He had him draped up like a wild animal
Holy Shit how incompetent do you have to be to not be able to handle a person walking down the street properly???!
Hmmmmmm, not showing the start of the confrontation? Strange, taking sides without facts again we are?
The Marshmallow Man lol his fans are 12 year olds. Do you think they will actually go look at the whole video?
The Marshmallow Man see as how the bystander is taking the black man's side as well as the bystander male....I'm taking the side of the black guy walking along side the construction vehicle because the sidewalk was closed and the cop grabbed him....
Hi. all 8 of you racists. We see you.
Kevin C Racist in what way? For not taking what the guy said as 100% fact?
***** Okay, so what makes his word worth more than the cops?
Not to mention the fact that you can tell this police department is quite used to this behavior because the officer who arrived second on the scene did not bother to assess the situation he just jumped out and went hands-on
Apparently you can be haphazardly be placed "under arrest" for nearly anything in America! This is a disgrace.
My blood was BOILING!!
No one likes someone grabbing them for something stupid and controlling them like a dog.
Can't imagine what he would have done if that woman wasn't there. She's truly amazing.
