My first Saturday job was working for a bike shop and I found wheel building a dark art! You are using far less spokes Kevin on your wheel so it should be much easier to true up 😁
Hi ttg Dark art my arse!!!!!🤣🤣 Once youn can set a job up in a 4 jaw chuck on a lathe, you can true a wheel up, Just get a lathe and try!!👍👍😉😉 Just got back from 4 hours constant running with scratch, went like a train!!!!!!!!!😉😉 cheers ttg take care Kev
I made up a wheel last year using S bends and had no problems either. I am making up a wheel now and I am ordering my spokes for the second time and it doesn't look as if these are going to turn up either.🙄 so it looks like I will be S bending again. The only problem I had last time was that I kept wearing out the jig hole. Oh and the arthritis in my hands is so bad I had to grip one side of a pair of bolt crops in a vice and use those like a guillotine.
eyup Shawn Thanks for the feedback, nice to hear your making the same, yes the Jig hole does take a pounding, it really needs making in a steel suitable to be Hardened, got to admit cropping them with side pliers is tough on the hands, but where there's a will there's a way, next time i might get the dremmel out with a cutting disc on. Take Care Kev
Interesting stuff Kev, two simple but effective jigs. I have a set of Z bend pliers used in model aircraft building (on much thinner gauge wire) that are very effective, I wonder if they sell bigger versions that could do 12 gauge? Cheers, Jon
I can't quite wrap my head around how the S-bend (in lieu of a proper J-bend with stamped head) withstands the severe tension introduced during cycling. Won't it work loose somehow?
hi VN thanks for feedback and watching I am no expert but, All i can say is the way i do it, seems to be as strong if not stronger than a J. I have used this method for a number of years, and never had one come loose or snap, if done properly. I use my bikes everyday (weather permitting) on normal roads, trails, tracks and canal tow paths, with normal use, i am NOT an extreme terrain rider so can't vouch for that sport. I have no intention to stop using the method as it suits me. As for severe tension, you will only get this if the spokes are tightened incorrectly, unevenly, too tight or too loose etc. just like you do with J bend spokes. If they are tightened correctly there should'nt be severe tension as in use one side cancels the other side out, as at any point in time, one side is in compression as the other side is in tension. Hope i have explained my philosophy on this clearly and hope it helps you regards Kev
