Dear hell I can barely afford to get one and you're cutting your barrel by hand 😂 I like the look it's just hard watching

I believe airgun velocity does rely on barrel length, and this seems like a failed mission but a cool concept none the less

Yes, you are correct to a degree. On an old online Crosman Forum a bunch of experiments were done to find the optimum barrel length for each type of popular airgun power plant. CO2 for example produces more power using heavier projectiles of larger diameter from longer barrels up to a point. Testing showed for .177 and .22 Crosman CO2 guns a length of 16" maximum before it actually started losing velocity. That's where the volume of the CO2 charge had expanded in that volume of the barrel and was no longer accelerating the projectile.
We'd found for rifled spring guns, optimum length tended to be more like 10 inches before this happens. Since most spring powered airguns have barrels twice that long. Often cutting off a little will actually increase velocity. The downside is they are harder to cock. I have a theory about why this works with other Gamo's but did not with the Viper Express. I'll share that soon.
Thanks for the comment. Be well....
      Al

Well it makes sense to me; shorter barrel = less velocity. The same reason a CO2 air pistol with a 3" barrel produces less velocity than a 6" barrel, and a CO2 air rifle with a 19" barrel produces more velocity than the pistols. Some of the air pressure is wasted as it leaves the barrel sooner than in a longer barrel. Of course this assumes the pressures are high enough to not completely expand and lose pressure before leaving the barrel (for example a barrel that's way too long). But that's unlikely with a quality production air gun. Ideally, it should reach maximum pressure right as the pellet leaves the barrel, so there is minimal waste of pressure.

All he had to do was compare the velocities of Crosman guns with different length barrels from the factory. He'd have noticed the velocity increase (to a point) with barrel length, until it doesn't. And He'd still have a great gun. TL/DR.. Gamo engineers knew more about gun barrels. 🙄

I’m going to address why I did this in an upcoming video. The reasons may surprise you. I’m not as naive or as ignorant as some may suspect.
I do however really dig the shirt 👕 I was wearing 😄🙃😉

Actually I used to be a moderator on the largest Crosman user forum The Green with Biohazard Man and Dr Subsonic. I’m also the guy who worked with Chip at Crosman to get the pump up carbines added to the Crosman Custom shop. Definitely takes for another day.
The point is the group did testing on the optimum barrel length for each power plant with regards to velocity. CO2 and compression air are similar in behavior whereas spring guns are a very different animal.
The Gamo Engineers Uncle Spanky mentions chose the barrel length on their spring guns based on aesthetics and making them easier to cock. Not for velocity reasons as would be the case in pneumatic, CO2 guns.
The amount of air compressed in the chamber or a spring gun is very small in comparison to the internal volume of its barrel. The force it exerts is typically expended in the first 10 to 12 inches of the barrel. After that the barrels rifling exerts friction which begins to actually slow the pellet. It’s an experiment that’s been done before. The problem is people are challenged cocking magnum springers with 20+ inch barrels. They could not cock shorter ones. And a long barrel maintains traditional rifle aesthetics.
The Viper Express is a Smooth bore (no friction from rifling) and behaved very differently. But I had additional reasons for shortening which I’ll explain later.
Cheers to all & thanks for the dialogue,
      Al
