These are some of my favorite drag videos on TH-cam. Clear, concise narration without a lot of worthless babble and no suffering through boring burnouts and staging.
Awesome that they are driving and racing these extremely valuable cars. Fathers talking to sons and daughters with stories of when these rare cars ruled the streets.
Good, no nonsense, presentation of vintage drag racing. These are realistic times for stock cars from that era and correlate within reason to published tests of the day.
I agree 100%, i am 65 and remember them running mid to high 14's under 100 mph unless something like a 427/425 Corvette with say 410/456 gears. I hate to say it but a new Challenger or Camaro would take them to the cleaners, they need to be compared to other vehicles of that era not todays though. I used to love 1st Gen. Camaro's, i build a 67 RS Yenko clone in 1975, it had the 427/425 solid lifter with 12 bolt, 456 gears and a 4 speed
@@zxtenn you know what's going on Jim lol. Sadly so many folks out there don't and believe everything they hear lol. I have a library of vintage car magazines in the thousands, mostly from the 70s & 80s up through the 90s until around 2004 or so I stopped getting subscriptions. Road & Track, Hot Rod, Car & Driver, Motor Trend, Car Craft and many others. I always enjoyed the road tests and shootouts. Performance cars of today are far superior to the cars of yesterday. Publications back in the day recorded 14.2 from a 428 powered GT500 Shelby. They also recorded 14.2 from a 1969 Camaro Z/28 DZ-code 302. Sure a skilled driver and some minor tuning, tweaking, etc, could put them in the 13s, but off the showroom floor, these are the times they ran.
@@nedaCFilms Thanks, the old TV show Road and Track tested a 428 Shelby auto. and 14.5 was the best they could get out of it.. Lots of the improvements in the new cars have to do with the heads flowing so much better than the castings they had available then, it wasnt always about just having bigger valves but the flow. Check out Performance engine rebuilding, he has a full series on the BB Chevy and he can get 625 HP from 454 using stock crank, rods and EVEN cast heads but he knows exactly how to port them to flow serious numbers, balancing tricks, he got mid 10's in a 68 Chevelle with a turbo 350 and 456 gears, naturally slicks, good suspension, etc. He also shows that many aluminum heads brands out of the box dont have the best valve job and other things, he's very smart and knows what works. Most of those DZ Z-28's were even slower than 14.2, they revved high that was about it, absolutely no torque so if i was going to buy/build a 1st gen. Camaro i would get a 502 or 572 or a good GM crate SB if i wanted to run a SB, 302 ONLY good to keep a Z original

Well it was 30-40yrs ago and we'd actually still see ultra-rare muscle cars pounding the drag strips lol. Nowadays these cars are zipped up in a climate controlled bag in a garage nicer than my house lol.
Finally a true drag race of vintage muscle cars as we all know back then they didn't have the technology that we have today the tires could hook up anywhere near the way they can today and all the cars varied as far as what they offered lot of people just because it had a emblem on it thought it was a race car doesn't mean it was a race car they made very few race cars from the factory most of them were just production cars to get people to buy them the only people who are really serious about racing was Mopar hence the reason they usually win most of the time.
Just found this channel:: Great vid, and myself being an Mustang owner, Im just loving that Valerie!! She is uncredible on thd Tree !!! To see these great stock muscle cars out there like this is a sight long gone and now unfortunately garage queens. But I get it sorta!! Sped that kinda money on any one of these cars .But still great to see them in they're true element thank you

WOW, now those are REAL stock times not these thoroughly internally 'warmed up' cars!!!!! Mid/high 14 at below 100 was an average time for most of them
With all that being said I love all the Vintage muscle cars if you ask me I think the real brutes were around the 63 through 70 error if you look back the power between 63 and 70 that these motors put out was unbelievable if you took that power today and gave it new technology you can knock at least two seconds off your time slip
I'll just say, I ran a 351 C mustang mildly modified, intake and headers, in Montana at 2000' elevation from 70 to 72, automatic with 390's, ran well at 15.05 all the time. Beat all SS 396's, the best cars, SS 454's and hemi's and 6 packs were running in the mid to low 14's. Just a bunch of farmers running their rides. No slicks, we drove them there. I cringe when I see the so called stock big block racers now, running in the 11's or 12's stock, just my opinion, not possible where I was...
Once again an amazing video!! Just wanted to thank you for all your retro videos. I always get my balls busted because I own a 91 Z28 and I love 80s muscle cars. People don't give them enough love. I've owned plenty of 60s and muscle as well but 80s cars have a special place in my heart. Funny thing is even with all their smog , low compression and small cubes they were still able to run mid to low 14s , equivalent to what a lot of these huge cubed muscle cars run. Thoughts??

I believe track prep and tires have changed a lot as well. Go watch @carsandzebras channel, he has current videos of these old muscle cars in the factory stock class racing and they are surprisingly quick.
@@CALISPEC1 these cars were unaltered showroom pure stock, most running original engines, the cars from the current pure stock races have done every trick in the book from bored, stroked, machine ported & polished and extrude honed components and every other trick that wasn't used on these cars.
Exactly right man. It's like the game of "telephone" we played in kindergarten back in the day. Once the story comes back around to the 1st kid, it's exaggerated and changed lol. Seriously though, these cars are 100% bone stock is why they are running low 14s. But if you remember back in the day, publications run many of these cars like the Ford 428 powered Shelby GT500 to low 14 second times. The '69 Camaro Z/28 with the destroked 302DZ engine also ran the same 14.2 times as the Shelby. Certainly tuning, tweaking, tires and good driver can squeeze much better times.
How far do racers take this, are they building cars from the ground up just for this? Do the cars need to be numbers matching and legit cars or are they running clones?
I very skilled drag racer can get them in the 13s. Keep in mind these are 100% pure factory stock and almost all major publications of the times in the late '60s averaged low 14s with them. With a really skilled driver and some timing, tweaking & tuning they are certainly 13 second cars.
When I got my 1970 428 CJ Mach 1 in early 90's it ran 14.0's on BFG'S with 3.50 gears. Swapped to 4.30's and street strip tires and went 13.34 at 101. With the sticky tires I could launch at 4500 which really helped. The BFG's didn't like anything over 2500.
