I was driving the 1969 Mustang 428SCJ. It was a stock 428 SCJ with 4:30 gears. My best time in the actual race was 13.76. I ran a 13.44 with the mufflers unhooked in practice. My times were inconsistent due to a worn out shifter that I couldn't find a replacement for before the race. It was a fun weekend but very hot. I think the temps hurt everyone's times up a little.
@@nedaCFilms I just turned 65 and spent plenty of time at NY National Speedway in the late 60's so i know what most cars REALLY ran not all old war stories, sure a 396 Chevelle was faster than a 350 Malibu but still somewhere in the 14's was the norm unless it was a 396/375 with 410/456 gears. I worked with a guy who had a dead stock 70 SS 396 Chevelle with 331 gears and a 4 speed, he barely got into the 14's at about 95 mph at Epping NH drag strip after i moved to MA. Compared to those 14 sec. 95 mph cars it would walk on them but 456 gears arent really street/highway gears so always looking for back roads to go somewhere. I had a Lakewood scattershield, lakewood comp. trac. bars with the big J hooks, had the hideaways and L-88 hood with a big radiator and looked tough from the front with the hideaways, scattershield , big stock Chevy oil pan and the L-88 hood, that factory 520 solid cam was good, decent idle, linear and revved over 6. That was the beginning of the 1st gas shortage so not a time to build an L-88 street engine with 12.5 pistons and more radical cam, i had a friend and told me the 2nd phase L-88 cam was better than the initial design but that was a rough idling cam. I owned a stock ‘69 Mach 1 428 CJ 4 speed 3.50 gears. It ran varying low 14 second tire spinning et’s at a steady 101 mph. Modern technology has rendered that a slug. I’ve told young guys that back then if you had a true 13 second street car that you would be pretty dominant in the cruise night drags. With no timing clocks you could brag about imaginary 12 second e.t.’s. In the intervening years much has been learned about tuning, suspension set up, and torque converter technology for the automatic trans cars. I’m a big fan of the F.A.S.T. drag racing where they cloak big inch strokers into factory appearing stock tire cars. The best of these now run in the 9’s
Back in the day I had a 1969 Mustang Mach 1, 428 CJ, shaker, 4 speed. The only car on the street that ever gave me a real race was a 1969 Road Runner, 440 6 pack, air grabber 4 speed. All the rest on street tires were easy wins for me. And yes 14 flat et at 100 - 101mph in the quarter at the strip was normal for us 428 CJ Mustangs. All racing on the bias ply wide oval street tires.
I raced in NMA back in the late 80 even won one in Texas. Man that was fun and we all helped one another out, I even waited on one guy with a 454 chevelle that was having start problems, he won but I didn't care who wants to win like that.(68 GTO & 68 firebird 400)
Very cool to see this and it sure brings me back to a different time! When was the last time you heard tires squealing at the starting line? Been so long I dont even remember!
Those are the cars that we drove in high school. GTX, Gto, firebird, camero, 55 chevy. Class of 1978 and we drove all those cars. Fun times. We’d drag race before class on the farm to market rd near the school
Nice to see people using them for what they was made for and not just keep it locked away somewhere. Also nice to see regular cars and not a "supertuned' setup. Many was running stock exhaust I bet! A decent tire, headers and some Tuning would have theses cars running much better.
Gm guy here / mechanic of 15 years and no biast against Ford but pretty much from what I see and my what my Mopar loving step dad says Mopar ate about everything up
They were faster than the Hemis... lighter engine, better vehicle balance, more torque, more controllable torque... 13.0 flat at 110 MPH stock with a good tune... 4.10 gear...
@@camirocz I’ve seen plenty of real cars with Brake and suspension upgrades without one computer chip or piece of plastic added and the average working joe could afford to buy maintain and repair them. Keep your political correct money pits.

In heads up race against a friends 428 Cobra Jet he took 3 out of 5. but in legal race I beat him every time. Nice to see Older cars race, but ET's seem kinda low to me.
I raced 440 cars in the 60's. No way would they keep up with a 428. I owned a 383 and that of course was even slower. 440 six pack was a different story.
Never count out the Pontiacs Birds. Those 400/455 engines have really long legs. They may loose on the hole shot but they have a big tendency to drive around you about mid way.
Yes indeed, these are the times that these cars used to turn, I was there and owned 2 396 chevelles, auto and 4 speed. Nothing back then PS ever touched the 12's and for that matter any 13 was rare. Everything was analog, vacuum and centrifically controlled. Couldn't even check mixture without pulling a plug and checking the color!
Go ahead! Back when racing was real! I am going to look around and see where no/ Electronic and Electronic racing will be going on and travel! Street outlaws have 2/ 3 hundred thousand dollars in their cars!
LOL, a B-body Mopar with traction bars (or any Mopar for that matter) is a dead give-a-way to the car being a slug...Bob Karakashian and his B-body Mopar on the other hand, demonstrated the way those cars ran when the guy knew what he was doing. Six Pack cars with the Super Track Pack option were mid to low 13 second cars as delivered, IF you knew how to drive them. 440 4 barrel cars were within 1-2 tenths of that. Sadly a lot of them, even the Hemi cars, were ordered with standard gearing, 3.23's, and open carrier differentials. (All Hemi's came with a limited slip differential even if they had the standard 3.23 gearing)
That 3.5 v 6 Honda with 285 hp also has better tires aerodynamics suspension electronic ignition feul injection much more efficient transmission today.
While that's true, there's no comparison in the engagement of ALL of your senses (yes, including taste to a degree..) or the purposeful attitude. I try to focus about that aspect of the nostalgia - to overcome the depression from your (sadly accurate) observation. HaHa. And... it's really hard to have any swagger while driving a minivan. Similar arguements can be made regarding paddle shifting vs. a floor shift configuration. They say: "...but electronic paddle shifting makes for better/quicker acceleration...blah, blah, blah..." Give me the complete tactile soul-connecting sense of a floor shift ANY day!
A 14-flat from a 428cJ. Maybe not his best run, maybe it was. Bottom line is the videos of ‘pure stock drags’ appears to feature a lot of breathed-on cars that a .030” over rebuild won’t yield.
Mustang was on a tire which gave him a huge advantage... looks like they might be in high elevation which would explain the slowish times.. these cars should be faster than that.
Some of these comments are hilarious, talking about how slow these cars were and that modern run-of-the-mill cars are faster. Look at the trap speeds - only thing they need are modern tires for much better e.t.
I like how people say new cars are faster. Most of them probably never seen a carburator, or a set of points, or the distributor they sat in. All a drag car builder does now is put a turbo on an engine and get someone smarter than them to program a computer. Back when these were new you had to actually build something.
I can appreciate the modern GT500 and GT350 Mustang and ZL1/1LE Camaro and Hellcat Charger and Demon Challenger. They really are V8 Supercars. But there's something ultra special about the classic muscle cars
Funny how slow they are as "muscle cars". my buddies v6 thunderbird from 95 did quarter in 15 sec. most of these cars are barely in the 14's. what the hell? I guess speed is relative and if everybody is slow it makes a 13 sec car seem fast.
Hate to say it but street outlaws and no prep racing has ruined drag racing for the weekend guys! I liked back when you paid a entry fee and tan time trials and then eliminations. Now guys run for a paper sack full of money one pass takes 5 k to the winner! Yelp I got a fast car its been in the trailer last couple years! Lol
Don't want to be a 'nazi' about it but the GTX had traction bars on it. A real no-go on b-body Mopars. Pinion snubber is what he should have had on that car. I bet that thing felt really bound up when he hit the gas. The other thing was 15.24?? Something wasn't right with that car. My 68 440 GTX ran over a second quicker than that bone stock but tuned up well, ie ignition curve and avs carb tweaked a little bit. They are heavy cars. 13.86 for that CJ seems about right because those were some real stormers. I could run away from a 390 GT Mustang in my GTX no problem but not a 428 Cobra Jet though I could outrun a CJ on the highway at high speed. I'm a Mopar guy but even back in the day if there was one Ford I would have jumped at the chance to own it would have been a 68 Mustang 428 CJ.
That GTX driver might have done better had he tried to do his best in the by run. He was still going to get beat if they're even close to stock because it's a bigger heavier car. After watching him squeal the tires on his launch it's also apparent to me that he doesn't really know how to get the best launch. I have to wonder about some of the cars that didn't win and how their gearing compared to the opponents. All told all those classic supercars aren't near as quick or fast as I remember them being.
All the stories here in the comments really take you back and it's like going down memory lane and yes the new cars are faster heck they should be for 50 years later do you think a 1970 Chevelle SS big block was faster than a 1928 Ford model t LOL of course it is same thing now the new cars have way better traction and traction control which also helps a lot but a lot of the new cars also have superchargers put a supercharger or a turbo on one of these old cars and some decent tires and the times would be pretty close
Most of these are concours class 100% factory showroom stock, tires and all, so the times aren’t going to be like a warmed over, tweaked and tuned example.
@MustangTown's Muscle Car Time Machine but like even back then they ran that slow? I swear they were all 13 seconds to for the fast ones like cjs boss 429s 440z etc were 12 second cars I didint think they were 14 15 second cars but ok then I guess the older classics were tuned in those 12 second races they said stock
Huh.. I'm trying to figure out why those cars are so slow I know they're running racing gears in the back ..my 70 cougar 351 Cleveland 2v heads with 2.75 gears in the back was running faster than most of those guys. 15.1 96 mph
I was driving the 1969 Mustang 428SCJ. It was a stock 428 SCJ with 4:30 gears. My best time in the actual race was 13.76. I ran a 13.44 with the mufflers unhooked in practice. If you put an aluminum intake on a 400-430-455, it weighs the same as a SBC and has more HP and a LOT more torque. Torque moves the world, you don't see TF and FC running small blocks, LOL.
@@TheEquineFencer Buick Olds & Pontiac never made a Big Block displacement engine. The 260 cid. Olds block is externally the same as the 455 cid. engine. 260, 326, 350 403 & 455

Thanks bud! Be sure to subscribe. We have soooo many hours of analog footage from the '80s & '90s.
Awesome story man! Thanks for sharing...
Love these old vids.
They all made something worth bragging on.
Very cool to see this and it sure brings me back to a different time! When was the last time you heard tires squealing at the starting line? Been so long I dont even remember!
This might be my favorite comment lol. Thanks!!
geez ol Ed got his moneys worth
Lol yes
I loved Beech Bend dragway back then and raced there a few times.
Went to the first Sports Nationals there in 1974. Life was so simple back then.

@@nedaCFilms Yes it was ,some really cool cars back then.
Kids? These are the cars that made your technology a reality
Those are the cars that we drove in high school. GTX, Gto, firebird, camero, 55 chevy. Class of 1978 and we drove all those cars. Fun times. We’d drag race before class on the farm to market rd near the school
Yep, amazing times
@@nedaCFilms we had a girl that drove a 69 mustang fastback with the louvers on the back window. Really cool.
Nice to see people using them for what they was made for and not just keep it locked away somewhere. Also nice to see regular cars and not a "supertuned' setup. Many was running stock exhaust I bet! A decent tire, headers and some Tuning would have theses cars running much better.
This was in 1987 and it was pure stock
Quaker city dragstrip Salem, Ohio?
Gm guy here / mechanic of 15 years and no biast against Ford but pretty much from what I see and my what my Mopar loving step dad says Mopar ate about everything up
Try running against a 70 Buick gs stage 2 they 11 flat @ 125 mph very few mopars would touch it if any
Owned a 69 Super Bee 440 Six Pack
Never took it to the strip but fed it allot of Chevelles on the street....
I thought it seemed faster than that
They were faster than the Hemis... lighter engine, better vehicle balance, more torque, more controllable torque... 13.0 flat at 110 MPH stock with a good tune... 4.10 gear...
The pre-burnout era?
The days of real cars instead of rolling computers wrapped in plastic.
Real cars with zero speed handling or braking .Only good to pose at car shows i guess.
@@camirocz I’ve seen plenty of real cars with
Brake and suspension upgrades without one computer chip or piece of plastic added and the average working joe could afford to buy maintain and repair them. Keep your political correct money pits.
In the first race was the guy in the 440 running with his brake on? Not to brag but I owned a 68 Road Runner 383 4 speed 3-91 gears would run low 14' s and a few 13's . In heads up race against a friends 428 Cobra Jet he took 3 out of 5. but in legal race I beat him every time. Nice to see Older cars race, but ET's seem kinda low to me.
Sometimes folks just have bad runs.
I raced 440 cars in the 60's. No way would they keep up with a 428. I owned a 383 and that of course was even slower. 440 six pack was a different story.
I agree , that first race seemed off, very disappointing, must of had a rookie driver
I also had a 1968 road runner 4spd blue black vinyl top 383 brings back good memories.
Great !v Reminds me of Fremont Drags Grudge Race (Tuesday?) Nights, Had a '69 383 Mag Charger friends wanted me to run.
Run what you brung.
Never count out the Pontiacs Birds. Those 400/455 engines have really long legs. They may loose on the hole shot but they have a big tendency to drive around you about mid way.
That 403" Olds powered Bird ran a 305" time... he needs to work on that short stroke engine... get the RPMs up...
Great cars! But how times have changed-six years ago my PT Cruiser GT 5spd (2.4 turbo)with simple mods did 14.1@102
You had a lot less weight as well
what are the gear ratios ? 2:50:1 v 3.90:1 ?
Yes indeed, these are the times that these cars used to turn, I was there and owned 2 396 chevelles, auto and 4 speed. Nothing back then PS ever touched the 12's and for that matter any 13 was rare. Everything was analog, vacuum and centrifically controlled. Couldn't even check mixture without pulling a plug and checking the color!
I love it and want to say waaayyyyyyy too much
Say it... SAY IT!!! Lol

Heavy Pontiacs made a good showing.
Yes they did...
Yep, last race was a 73 SD-455 Trans am beating the mustang
Can you say hole shot
thinkin back in the day, these were fast cars. Now a v6 honda can turn those times:(
ya check the weights though, put any of those motors in the Honda and watch her go
Put a dist and a carb on that V-6 Honda and see it do a 19 sec run
Some of these 50+yr old cars are worth $100,000 now... what are Hondas worth lol

That 3.5 v 6 Honda with 285 hp also has better tires aerodynamics suspension electronic ignition feul injection much more efficient transmission today.
It’s amazing how almost every V6 powered minivan made today can smoke almost every car there!

That one from fast and furious:
A 14-flat from a 428cJ. Maybe not his best run, maybe it was. Bottom line is the videos of ‘pure stock drags’ appears to feature a lot of breathed-on cars that a .030” over rebuild won’t yield.
56 Prius owners disliked this video.
Mustang was on a tire which gave him a huge advantage... looks like they might be in high elevation which would explain the slowish times.. these cars should be faster than that.
Guy in dodge wasn’t even trying he was just barely running that car!
Some of these comments are hilarious, talking about how slow these cars were and that modern run-of-the-mill cars are faster. Look at the trap speeds - only thing they need are modern tires for much better e.t.
Ok faithful Buick !
See,this is what it was back in the day. Not that ridiculous shit put on by the division
“pure stock”
Yep
I like how people say new cars are faster. Most of them probably never seen a carburator, or a set of points, or the distributor they sat in. All a drag car builder does now is put a turbo on an engine and get someone smarter than them to program a computer. Back when these were new you had to actually build something.
And it took a lot of balls to haul a 68 Road Runner down from 110 mph with standard drum brakes!
@@johnnystafford1826 downshift that 727 like it was an 833 lmao.. Drums are def sketchy AF, especially if you don't know how to adjust them right..
I will look at old school muscle cars all day long, but won't give a second glance to that modern crap!!
These cars are 100% showroom stock
Hate to say it but street outlaws and no prep racing has ruined drag racing for the weekend guys! I liked back when you paid a entry fee and tan time trials and then eliminations. Now guys run for a paper sack full of money one pass takes 5 k to the winner! Yelp I got a fast car its been in the trailer last couple years! Lol
I agree
Anyone remember National Speedway......Long Island NY
They all look so slow now.
Is this the Super Car Showdown series?
I noticed all the fords that were automatic got ass handed to them.
Love the vid but I don't think any of these cars were running even close to full potential these times make no sense
15.1
