  • Flying to a big event like Sun 'n Fun is never routine, but nothing would have prepared me for this flight. Come along and see how things got from bad to worse, from easy to confusion - and how it all came to a happy end.
    This flight was on April 2, 2019, taking off from Fort Lauderdale Intl. heading to Sun 'n Fun in Lakeland, Florida. Enjoy the view from the cockpit with me as this story unfolds.

    I was holding a Lake Parker for almost 1,5 hours VFR. We had to be at 4-500 ft, so you did the right thing and stayed IFR.

    Well, the temptation to “scud run” to get into the Lake Parker VFR hold would have been strong, and it appears others took that alternative, but I think you did the much safer and prudent thing, and thankfully got in. Good job!

      For sure. I am really wondering how the VFR aircraft were maintaining legal cloud clearance. I would have continued IFR based on what I see in the video no matter the pressure from ATC or my gut.

      Diversion was always an option, of course. Multiple other airports nearby, but I had plenty of fuel onboard.

    Martin, Great video as always!!! That was some crazy sh!t!
    That was pretty crappy of them to close 30 minutes prematurely. NOTAMs are published for a reason! Just as we must adhere to them, so should the publishers (short of an emergency). Piss poor planning/management on Sun'n Fun's behalf! I doubt I'll go back.

    Martin, I was following the Sun N Fun arrivals live on Flightaware and also listening to LiveATC that day just because that's what I like to do. I happened to see N70TB on my screen and I said to myself, hey that's Martin Pauly! Then I watched you fly in circles all over the place and wondered WTF was going on and if you were actually going to get in before the airport closed for the airshow. Watching everything unfold on my screen, I assumed you were the last one in that day so thanks for confirming the full story with the video. It sounded like the controllers at LAL were hoping the last few planes out there would declare low on fuel so they could justify keeping the airport open and letting them in, but the last guy out there didn't take the hint and ended up diverting.

      Jeremy Weiss Hi Jeremy, I don’t think I’d declare low fuel just to get in there. Might have repercussions like checking your flight planning and fuel calculations, and questioning your decision making up to that point. At any rate, I was glad to get in and be on the ground.

    Awesome video Martin! I like how you tell a story in your videos of what' s happening and what you're thinking as the video progresses. It makes for a more engaging video and really separates your videos from others on TH-cam. This is one of the best I've watched to-date! Speaking of the video, I think it's unfortunate that Lakeland closes the airport 30 mins "before" the time listed on the published NOTAM. If the airport closes at 1:30, then say "1:30", not 2:00. I'm sure if folks knew in advance the time was 1:30 they would plan accordingly. That makes no sense... Glad you made it in!

      Thanks for the kind words. Yes, I like to tell a story in most of my videos, in addition to showing some fun and/or interesting flying. This one - "Lost over Lakeland" - seems to be quite popular, though I would also recommend my "Why I love Sun 'n Fun" video which I think turned out really well.

    Hi Martin. What a great video! From my perspective you did a fantastic job of safely playing the hand ATC dealt you. I applaud your decision to stay IFR until the conditions improved and not joining the gaggle orbiting the lake in what had to be marginal VFR. Also kudos for sticking to your guns at the last and negotiating approval to land with the Tower. It was very unfair of ATC to shut the airport down at a time earlier than the NOTAM arrival procedure stipulated, particularly given the traffic stacking up due to the earlier runway closures. Well done sir!

      Thanks, Joe. It was a somewhat extreme example of how sometimes the best laid plans don't work out when we fly - though in the end it still worked out. These challenges (usually they are much more benign) are part of the fun of flying for me.

      The second closure was a bonanza with a nose gear which failed on landing. Beautiful landing with what looked like “minimal” damage

    This one was intense! I was really feeling for you when they denied you after all that holding but luck and good fortune were on your side to slide in as the last plane landing! Very good flight. A lot to think about with all the planes and special procedures in place. Good call not trying to cancel IFR and cheat your way in VFR.

    Seems to me that the NOTAM was wrong. You shouldn't have to end up having to guess. Great video, by the way.

      Obviously, the information in the Sun 'n Fun NOTAM was either incorrect or incomplete, regarding the start time of the air show and what that means for closing the airport. And I don't blame anyone for making changes, that's life, that's to be expected. I just wish those changes had been better communicated on the ATIS and on Approach Control. That would have made things much easier.

    Great job Martin! Good decision by you and the Seneca to stay in the IFR hold. I'd of done the same thing with what I was seeing out your window. As far as the F bomb your patience was amazing I'd of let a few go before that but then again you are a much more refined gentleman than I'am. The old moniker "never hurts to ask or beg if necessary" worked out well for ya, glad ya got in as we all know what a pain it is to divert. Can't wait for the next video keep up the good work!

    This is so awesome!! I live in Lakeland and growing up i dreamed of being a pilot, but never did. But Ive always enjoyed sun n fun and everything about aviation. So to get to HEAR everything that was happening above my home a few days ago was absolutley mind blowing to me. This was a really awesome experience for me.

    Oh man, I think we were in the air at the same time. I arrived VRF on Saturday, morning and the lake was covered with low clouds. The Lake Parker arrival was insane. I really don’t mean to plug my video, seriously, but you can see this from a VRF point of view in my Sun N Fun arrival video.

    This sort of situation is why it's so important to have the habit of performing that GUMPS check on short final every time. A non-standard, rushed arrival could easily lead to forgetting to drop the gear. Great job hitting the green dot.

    Good decision making. The weather definitely looked and sounded iffy for those doing VFR in the procedure. Glad you and a few others pushed to get in....the approach controller probably had to shut it off so the tower could clear the lake holding pattern in time, although it did seem like they were jumping the gun a bit even from the tower.

    That is crazy. I’m based in the area and remaining IFR was a good decision. Lake Parker gets crazy when there is good visibility. For future reference KPCM is always easy to get into during SnF and has plenty of parking and rental cars to get you to the show or if you just want to wait out the TFR. I worked the line and got all my ratings there.

      Thanks, I'll keep KPCM in mind for future trips. I heard other people divert to KZPH that day, seemed to be a popular option. I'm still so happy everything came together in the end for landing right at Lakeland.

      Martin Pauly ZPH is popular for people coming from the north because they have cheap gas but they are a zoo on a good day with skydiving gliders and no radio ultralights in the pattern with no tower. You definitely had the best outcome

      Thanks, Joey. Hitting the green dot took some luck. I do alright landing smoothly, but not always exactly where I want to touch down. On this flight, it was a nice way to complete the flight and declare success! :-)

      @@joeyg7458 Yes, I've heard that before. :-)
      I actually WAS a flight instructor for gliders, when I lived in Germany. I was teaching in the flying club where I learned to fly, and I enjoyed doing that. I no longer fly gliders, but I think flight instruction for airplanes is in the cards sometime in the future. As a first step, I'm currently training towards my commercial rating. In fact, I'm taking the written test in a couple of hours - keep your fingers crossed.

    I don't usually like suspense but I had to watch all of your video. Had it been me my 'flakes' would have been frosted but like you I would have tried to get in. Thank you for your experience.

      Yes, that parking spot I ended up in couldn't have been any better. Almost on the extended centerline of the main runway, like you wrote. I had my own little airshow each morning when the warbirds were arriving. Or the Blue Angels one morning. I would PAY to get that same spot again next year.

    Great ADM Martin, I would have done it exactly as you did, ATC just has to talk a little more with you as IFR, he's still comfortable in his chair safely on the ground. The airplanes in the hold sounded stressed, with few options if things went bad due to the ceiling, who needs that. Great job. They need to be more accurate with the NOTAMS.

      Yes, better notification and transparency on the airport closure plans would be very helpful. Maybe they can improve on that next year.

    Excellent as always Martin! Good demonstration of pilots remaining in control of the situation - you and the Seneca did some first-rate operations there! I imagine a less experienced pilot would find that very daunting indeed.

    Glad you made it! Those other guys who were circling for hours are probably as frustrated as you where when you heard the airport was closed. If they close at 1320 then that should be on the NOTAM not 1400.

      @Tom Maxwell Hello Tom, I agree with you that moving the time of the air show causes big headaches and should be avoided. Where I have trouble following you is why you think the airport had to be closed a half hour early because of an accident in the past. At 1:30, when they closed it, everything was up and running again, and all aircraft holding over Lake Parker had landed. At that point, I don't know how the prior accident influenced anything - the situation would have been the same had the accident not happened.
      Granted, my visibility of what was going on on the ground is limited, so there may have been very good reasons for this change. My main concern is that this change was not communicated to us pilots who were planning on the airport closing only at 2:00 PM, as announced in the Sun 'n Fun NOTAM. A simple transmission on the approach control frequency of Tampa and Orlando would have made a big difference.

I knew you'd stay IFR, for me your reputation gave that away many videos ago. ...lost, not quite, almost left behind to go to Plant City or Winter Haven.     I cant believe they didn't delay the airshow an hour, with an accident they had to have known there would be a huge traffic jam? they should have allowed traffic in until 2:30 instead and started the airshow at 3

    The controller seemed to be trying to push you off IFR to VFR but you did the right thing by staying with him.

      Yes, the controller seemed to be talking people into canceling IFR. Hard for me to put myself into his shows and to understand how high his workload was... I am sure he had his hands full. Still, there was no question in my mind that IFR was the way to go, at least until the airport reopened.

      That probably would have been much easier. At the same time, if it hadn't been for the incident with the Baron (nose wheel collapse on the runway), my arrival on Tuesday would have been pretty routine, too. You just never know.

      I understand. At the same time, once I was actually there, I thoroughly enjoyed being at Sun 'n Fun and on-site around the clock. A lot goes on after the daily airshow ends, and it would have been a different experience driving in each day.

    Awesome video, and excellent display of aeronautical decision making . I was not that fortunate and had to land at Bartow when they denied me entry 40 minutes prior to the TFR going active. I just don't understand why they didn't advertise the actual closure time?

      Maybe one of the organizers will see this video and can think of a better way to communicate closures, so that we can plan ahead accordingly.
