    Always said I would learn to fly, but life has its "deviations". I love your channel w/voice over, visual inserts of your instruments. Far more and better than just watching someone go from point A to point B.

    "Expect the visual." Prepare for the ILS. "Cleared for the ILS." Excellent! Exactly the way to do it. And yes, Wilson is a great FBO for us light GA pilots. Welcome to NC, Martin.

    Martin, nice approach and radio work as usual. You are an inspiration for that. I kept looking for beads of sweat, but noticed none! Beautiful camera placement. Thank you for making these videos. Gotta love it when the controller in a Class B airspace thanks you for your help...

      clearpropCFI .....five square miles of parking has been created bordering CLT along with another parallel runway in the past 10 years - it’s another city in itself and a nighttime trip to the observation area by 18C at peak traffic time is a treat - aircraft joining the pattern, landing lights 360 degrees on a clear night !! Mt. Mitchell is 6684’ and then it’s all downhill to CLT !!

    • @martinpauly

    Great enunciation on your radio work. I used to work at CLT FBO when it was Signature. CLT is a friendly Class B for general aviation. Just make sure you get the east runways to slip in and out with ease.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The east runway sure helps a lot, Bill. CLT was a bit busy on that Friday afternoon, especially when I departed an hour later. But it was easy and the controllers were friendly and welcoming.

    You are as very good pilot, Martin! I'm blown away by your panel and your knowledge and use of the features. That's fun to watch. BTW, I know you know, but a V35B can hold 170 kts to just short of the threshold and still land shorter than the jets...takes a bit of practice to be comfortable with it.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, 150 KIAS is a bit conservative, but I like to fly approaches below the gear speed - so that I can drop the gear when needed without having to slow down first. If on a given day ATC requests a higher speed for me to fit in, I can do that - 170 knots in a descend is no trouble for the A36 either, though you are right in that the V tail has a speed advantage over mine.

      @martinpauly  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately most FBOs at larger airports do that, so CLT (Wilson) was a nice surprise.
      I assume you meant RSW? Because Page Field has a great reputation for service and fees/value; I'd be shocked if they charge $25 for a small airplane to land at Page Field?

      @@martinpauly yes that's correct Martin! My mission was SRQ-RSW in a tricked out 2012 Turbo Skylane for a, XC with a CFII to get an H.P. and G-1000 sign off.
      Note to self, drink less water or it may cost $25, lol, the bathrooms were clean!
      Of all the flights out of SRQ, into SPG Albert Whitted in a Piper Arrow was my favorite. Landing 36 over the bay was super cool and they have a great restaurant!

    When you were flying I have far in the summer time around build up some storms do you always try to keep yourself in visual conditions so that you can see the build ups and cross reference it to your instrumentation? Seems like it could be a little concerning to be in cloud in such conditions all the time with the threat of embedded storms not being able to put your eyeballs on them. Hi Allan, yes, what you point out os very important. The radar shows great information about the intensity of precipitation and its location, but the information is always old, which means it is super helpful to verify things by looking outside. On this flight to Charlotte, that was easy to do. Much harder when I am in instrument conditions, in which case I'd stay away much further from anything on the radar.

      Thank you, Kevin. The weather and traffic are coming into the IFD from my Lynx transponder. I had to install a wire (or maybe a pair of wires) for that to work. If you have a compatible ADS-B 'in' transponder, your avionics installer should be able to make this connection easily. It is very helpful to have weather depicted on the IFD's map, as well as traffic.

I want to verify my shop wired them or not because I’m not getting weather like yours on my IFD540. I’ve had another issue recently I had different shop fixed where I wasn’t getting the aural alerts for traffic on my IFD. Which is fixed now at a different avionics shop. So Martin any help would be greatly appreciated for me to troubleshoot myself 1st then take to shop for weather on my IFD. I am an electronics technician and if you send me pin layouts from Lynx to IFD would be great help. Keep up great videos and thanks.

      @@kevin4sambos119 Kevin, your installer has access to the IFD installation manual. You need to add an RS-232 connection (two wires) for the weather and traffic information. Figure D - 62: "NGT9000R Interconnect" in the install manual. The connection is called "CAPSTONE TFC + Wx HIGH SPEED" in the install manual.

    Hi Martin. Talking about Lean of Peak, Rich of Peak. Can you please consider doing a lesson on it. Nice to see how you do it on your plane using your digital displays but would you do it with only a fuel flow meter and an old EGT cage? Also what does it really mean? What is the goal in adjusting the mixture one way or another? Just a recommendation.

But yours is Avidyne, so, not sure if they suffer the same issue or if this was just a rare database mistake. You could still execute the step-down if you were flying the LOC procedure, but it's just a pain in the ass to have to do the math.

    • @martinpauly

      The lean find feature of the JPI EDM930 is a great visualization tool for learning to grasp what you're doing when switching from ROP to LOP, and for identifying the cylinder which needs to be references (which is the last one to cross peak on the way from rich to lean). Once you know that, my experience is you can learn more quickly by simply watching the EGT of that cylinder.

    Is there a particular reason you prefer to dial the Comm frequencies using the knobs vice using the touch screen? Just curious as I have seen a lot of Avidyne users use the touchscreens and the knobs during chop.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Julio,
      No particular reason. Part of it is probably coming from the GNS where the knobs were the only way to dial in a frequency, so it formed a habit for me. And it's quick to do with the knobs, whereas for alphanumeric input (waypoints, airports etc.) I really do like the touchscreen keyboard of the IFD. In the end, a lot is personal preference - there are usually multiple different ways to accomplish a task with the IFD.

    Mr. Pauly;
    I like the channel, but a thought crosses my mind...
    Do you consider it appropriate to use Class Bravo airspace unnecessarily? Certainly it can be done safely, but during the day it poses stress points and potential conflicts requiring resolution that need not occur. Even without those considerations, your flight takes up valuable resources needed for the commercial flights for which that airspace was designated. The compromises created seem - to me- to be an unreasonable and unnecessary impact on safety and or capacity for safety. I know a lot of folks like to feel like they're part of the "jet set" but we GA types are most definitely not. If you have an insatiable desire to land at these fields, why not try it at 2 or 3 in the morning? There's very little or no commercial traffic to pose a conflict to. Heck, at that time of night the controllers welcome the diversion. I have done this flown GA aircraft into (then) TCA's myself, but experience has made me reevaluate the risk/benefit equation. I encourage you to as well.
    No matter how that ends up, you're still top drawer and I enjoy riding along IFR with you! Keep up the good work.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting question, and probably one which deserves a bit more than a 'yes' or 'no' answer. First of all, yes when I fly, I use resources. When I drive my car, I also use resources. When I use electricity to air-condition my house, that's also using resources. Roads, utilities companies, airspace, ATC etc. are there for one reason: because people use them.
      Now, you asked if I consider it appropriate to use Class Bravo airspace - so what is appropriate use of those resources? That's where it gets gray very quickly. As a society, we could make much better use of our road infrastructure by car-pooling to work more. We could reduce the expense of upkeep on the electrical grid by running air conditioning less in the summer. We could reduce the workload on ATC at busy airports by flying less - not just small airports, but really every person buying a ticket to or from Charlotte contributes to the workload there.
      Of course, all of these examples have good, reasonable use, and one can also easily think of unreasonable use. I highly doubt that my two or three landings a year at busy airports ("insatiable desire"? Really?) make a dent, and I go there on "normal" days, not when a storm is approaching and everyone is scrambling to deal with things. I've spoken with controllers at these busy airports and asked them if I am an inconvenience to them when I fly there - the response being, "no, that's what the system is designed for, and that's what we are trained for".
      I do land at smaller airports at the other 99% of my flights (most of which never end up on TH-cam), but in summary I can say I do not feel bad when, on occasion, I go to a large Class Bravo airport.
      Best regards,
      Martin
