    Did you really just compare the EOS M to the $5,000 plus Canon C70? Great video by the way. You have extremely good skills in regards to both film, storytelling and editing. I would reduce the music slightly, like another person mentioned (just slightly).

    Hey Edmund! I'm 21 and I'm from Mexico, salary here is pretty rubbish, I can roughly make 50 usd per week bc I also go to college so a bmpcc4k or anything on that kind of budget is pretty much out of my league. I've started to dive into these EOS M videos and I'm loving them, they have pretty much revitalized my hopes for an affordable camera to make my short films :), I've even considered selling my T6i to start building a EOS M rig so I'm hoping to get more updates from you and your journey with the EOS M, have a nice day!

    I bought my EOS M in 2012/13. I paid $600.00 for two batteries, a charger, the EOS body, the 22MM f/2 prime pancake lens, and the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM zoom. This is my go to camera, and I have not experienced any buyer's remorse. I use it almost every day, and have incorporated Magic Lantern into the software side. My old Canon AE1 FD lenses are being used because of all the adapters that are available. I also have old zeiss 3 element 135mm projector lenses from the 1920s on the M, and I have even adapted a Medium format Hasselblad 80mm Planar lens that turns the M into a literal "Hand Cannon!" This is the best camera I have ever had, and if I wanted to step up, I'd have to get Leica.

    I think buying an eos m made me want to buy a real cinema camera that didn't work off of a microscopic crop on a nearly weightless camera. It worked properly 50% of the time and it left me wanting a camera that worked without having to beg it to do so. I just couldn't do it.

    This month we've seen rapid development in the magic lantern world, 240mhz overclocking for the SD card means higher resolutions, and more stable at 1080, plus higher framerates. They continue to make optimizations to the firmware, who knows what the next 6 months to a year will bring us.

  • @vladimirkirillovskiy8056
    @vladimirkirillovskiy8056 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Well if you have C70 it doesn't worth it :) But for a poor man cinema camera it is a good one. I recently picked one up, and I'm impressed. In my experience, 2.8K is the best in resolution and usability. Good details as well as continuous shooting (24fps, 10bit). Crop is inconvenient, agreed, but in 2.8k mode I think it is around 2.5x crop or so. No real time preview is inconvenient as well, but can be dealt with on locked shots. None of these issues are present for 1080p or 5k anamorphic frtp modes (5k frtp is not real 5k).
    Most people who disappointed in it, they don't want to learn it, in your case you have C70, so you have much easier way to shoot good footage :)

    Just bought one for 146£.
    I already have ML experience with my old canon 50d, which was abandoned for almost 5 years.
    Now with ML this old camera is able to shoot 11s of 14bit HD raw. Which looks pretty impressive.
    I haven’t started using the EOS M yet because the EF to EF m adapter hasn’t arrived. And I have nigh hopes. Earlier this year I’ve bought a GoPro, started making videos learning Davinci resolve…
    I am fully aware of how the Magic Lantern works, what to expect and how inconvenient it is.
    Oh course for you with canon C70 using EOS M makes no sense.
    PS. Awesome video, style atmosphere, etc.

    It took me a little under a year to figure out how to take advantage of crop mood.
    I was always confused about why I couldn't get anything to work and I found out that it wasn't my cards.
    It was the camera itself.
    It's data rate can't go over 87MB/s without becoming unstable.
    The one thing that also annoys me (but this is the cost of using an eos-m) is that I have to shoot 1-2 dud video clips that can't be used, but all other clips after that are stable and can be used for recording.
    So keep that in mind of you use this for shooting stuff.
    Once you turn the camera on, (I also recommend using the card warm up feature), you should just aim at the ground or something and just record until it stops. (should be about 2 seconds or so) Do it again, after doing two clips like this, all other records will be stable.
    At least, that's with my eos-m. I'm sure it might vary depending on other cameras.

    I've been playing with the recently released crop mood build on a recently acquired EOS M and my TH-cam wanderings have led me here. After realizing there are a few things I shouldn't do which will crash the camera CM has been pretty stable for me given it's limitations. Not having messed with prior builds I can't really say much about them but being somewhat of a tinkerer/technical guy after playing with crop mood for a couple hours I'd have to agree with you about the additional crop. I have a sigma 30 and a set of Kiev-16U lenses, when 12mm becomes 'normalish' depending on what settings you are using indoors it makes you question things. That said comparing the default video output and the raw output is astonishing but I'm by no means even an advanced amateur when it comes to video stuff so what I'm learning is how much I have to learn once again.
    Just wondering if this is still of interest and if you've messed with crop mood at all, seems it's been quite the update for some people and as a newbie after watching bilals 'settings' video i've had no major problems with it.

    Apologies as I don't know much about this topic but why exactly are people picking the EOS M over the other cameras supported ? (5D Mark II, 5D Mark III, 6D, 7D, 50D, 60D, 500D/T1i, 550D/T2i, 600D/T3i, 650D/T4i, 700D/T5i, 1100D/T3)
    Is it just the price of the EOS M? the form factor? Lens system? or what?
    Is there the possibility of better performance on any of the other supported cameras? Have people tried testing any of the other camera models with the firmware?

    • @EdmundElijah
      @EdmundElijah  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry, I meant to reply to this earlier.
      I believe that this camera has captivated TH-cam because of its low price, and how hard TH-camrs are promoting it. Why would people prefer it over the 5DMKII? Probably because they're attracted to the size, and it has a shorter flange distance. But, honestly, I believe that there are too many cons to promote it as a starter camera for anybody.
      I understand that people like to use this for specific uses, but that isn't everyone. This camera is promoted too heavily to beginners, and if I have difficulties with it - after operating cameras for almost two decades, I cannot imagine what a novice is going to do with it.
      I believe that there are older cameras out there that will give you fantastic photos and video. I believe that there are newer cameras that will do the same. I do not believe that the EOS M is a good option with all of the other cameras out there.

    • @thelateraledge
      @thelateraledge ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EdmundElijah Thanks for the in depth answer, that's exactly what I was confused about, that someone would choose the EOS M over the 5DMKII if they can both run the Magic Lantern Firmware.
      We now also have the option to record RAW videos via .DNG format on compatible android phones using the "MotionCam Pro App" Which might be the better option here rather than buying a second-hand camera from 2012.
      It would be interesting to see how a modern Android phone with MotionCam Pro App stacks up against the 2012 EOS M with Magic Lantern.

    Pour une production de fiction a tres petit budget bien sur qu'acheter et équiper un Eos M vaut le coup

    Interesting. I see how this wouldn’t be good if you had a really nice camera but for people that can’t afford nicer camera but still want to learn about some of the nicer feature, i think it is decent. At least until they can get the nicer ones.
    Regardless nice video

      @@EdmundElijah I agree for the basic stuff but not necessarily for the stuff that would only be on nicer cameras. Aspect ratios, fps (to some extents), zebras, peaking, some histogram stuff etc. it’s my b camera to get my feet wet with this stuff.
      What other affordable cameras do you think would be better?(I may need to get one lol)

      @@EdmundElijah canon 7D. It’s old but I started out with it long ago as a photography camera, it’s still great for that honestly. 1080p 24/30fps is fine for now. I have a long term goal as maybe a R5 or c200/c70. But wondering for stepping stone cameras.

      @@EdmundElijah Also, decent review! I have no DSLR right now, and I was wondering if you would be will to help: I want to efficiently purchase for 4k video, 24fps is sufficient but 60fps would be preferred so I don’t have upscale 1080p slo-mo footage. What would be your best camera suggestion with a reversible rotatable viewfinder (which I’ve found mirrorless don’t tend to have), auto-follow focus, touch screen, and has MagicLantern mod available, around $500? I think I can do this with maybe a T7i Canon? I’m a bit more interested in a Sony, but not sure it’s necessary. I’m most acquainted with Canon EOS in the past. Thanks Ed!
