    After sighting in at 60 feet, I could easily cover 5 shots with a nickel th-cam.com/users/postUgkxQt2uORDRfFOVSrO4idv4B90ThT6EOnEL ! Truly a pleasure to shoot! Scope was easy to adjust for eye relief. Only problem the varmints must have seen it delivered lol!Update: So impressed with shot groups at 30 yards I purchased a Hammers 3×9 with adjustable Objective scope! Now a true nail driver!

    I have been a professional shooter in Australia for most of my 56 years on this earth and I have culled everything from Ferrel dogs Roos Razorbacks horses donkeys and you name it . I use to use an Enfield 303 , now I use a Tikka 30 06 , and my late Wife's 222 , not a mention my leaver action 12 gague shotgun with 00 buckshot . And I am impressed with your firearm , never heard of it until tonight , but it would be great for foxes and dingoes and the Ferrel dogs I mentioned . Keep up the good work mate kindest Regards from Australia Cheers Dan 👍

      30-06 is a fairly big step up over the .303 powerwise. At least as long as you stick to factory loads. I believe a .303 with a 150 gr bullet is usually somewhere around 2600-2700 fps. The '06 with a 150 grain bullet is usually around 2950ish fps. The .303 is has a slightly larger diameter bullet that the '06, (303=.311/312, .30-06=.308)@@pcakes1878

    Why do reviewers keep comparing the .17hmr with the 22lr when the 17hmr is based on the 22 magnum case? Shouldn't they be comparing it to the 22wmr?

      @@jackdundon2261 damn right man. But let's let these jagweeds keep on their 17hmr vs 22lr thoughts. That way there is always plenty of 17 on the shelf. I personally feel the 17hmr is the most exciting and enjoyable round on the market right now. On my paper targets...sometimes I thought i missed the target until I get down range and realize that I put all 11 rounds through the same dime sized hole. If it wasn't a rim fire round...it would be my preferred weapon for hunting. I just ordered my 2nd 17hmr. I bought a ruger precision 17 and a suppressor. The rifle will be here in 2 weeks and I've got about 8 or 9 months left on my FED approval. Talk about impatiently shittin bricks.

    22lr is an awsome round, and there are plenty of rimfire competitions utilizing 22lr out to 400 to 500 yards, and is an awsome round for beginners to learn their holds, windage, elavation etc. Also is a good hunt round out to 100yds, the 22 wmr extends the 22lr out to 200 yds and is excelent for headshots out to that point. In my opinion, the 17 takes the best of both rounds and is a quick go to for a flat trajectory. Before the 17hmr, they have had a centerfire 17, so the hmr broke ground in the rimfire world. But the 17 is a headshot precision round in my opinion, that way upon impact the round explodes and sends shards through the skull. There was a documented case where there was an area with diseased deer and the state sent hunters in to eliminate them, some had 22-50 and others had 22mag and were taking head shots with the average yardage shot being 150. So they are an equal round out to 150-200, but at about 175 yards the 22wmr takes the icing on the cake with being able to hold onto the ft lbs. At about 175 the 17 has the same ft lb energy as a typcial air rifle. In my opinion, 22mag is the best all around(which isnt always good), but with a good combination of rifle and scope, one would be able to set a zero at say 100yd, an have the correct markings above the zero for 50 and 75 yd, and the correct drop windage. 17hmr can take the cake for someone that is an extreme point and shoot kind of guy, sight in at 100 and be able to use the zero with no adjustment for 50-100yd and 100 to 200yd(of course there would be 1-2" of adjustment but you get my point). 22wmr is 4-6" at about 200yd depending on the round. So I guess breaking it all down to the basics, the only difference between the 2, 17 and wmr, is the amount of windage, other than that, they both have about the same effective distance and both kill.

    I'll add a few thoughts here-
    1. I wish we here in California could use suppressors
    2. Hornaday .17HMR ammo is my go to. At a hundred meters, my rifle shoots very tight groups. CCI or Federal? Not as tight. 200& 300 meter groups are sub in accuracy with Hornaday.
    3. Rabbit Tacos!!! Get fresh tortillas, grill Rabbit meat and add cilantro, lime, onions and Tapatio hot sauce. You will not be disappointed!!

    A buddy and I decided to build some varmint precision rifles. He went with the ruger precision chambered in 22wmr i went with the savage b-17 chambered in the 17hmr. I prefer Shot placement over bullet mass. Ammo at our local store both cost $19 for 50 rounds. Hitting rockchucks between 150-200 yards between the 2 of us was hardly a challenge. His 22wmr was harder on shot acquisitions than my 17hmr but his had more pass through. I like the 17 because i can be more precise at different yardage and i dont have to worry about what my round is doing after ive hit the target. I dont get rounds buzzing back if i hit a rock or heading off to the nearest home or bystanders. I prefer the 17 because it has no velocity left once its passed through its target. And if you want to hunt something bigger take a bigger cartridge. But a 17hmr with a good platform and good shot execution will drop a coyote in its tracks all day long out 250 yards. SHOT PLACEMENT IS KEY FOR ANY CALIBER YOU SHOOT. Great shot placement is is everything in the hunting world along with precision shooting sports. Both are great rounds it all comes down to preference. And saying one is outright better then the other is completely negligent of the fact that different calibers work better for different shooting styles because it all comes down to PREFERENCE on each individual shooter. I dont watch these videos for persuasion i watch them purely because i enjoy finding videos showing good ethical kills while watching my preferred round getting the job done. I posted a video shooting the center of a bag at 150 yards with a bow and was told its unethical. Never said id hunt that way but its good practice. Unethical is only possible if your shot doesnt kill. 22wmr,22lr,17hmr... bad shotplacement happens in every caliber and practice with good shot placement is the only way to mitigate bad experiences.

      The .17HMR would really be pushing it on foxes/coyotes. I’ve seen people take them with headshots but it’s just alittle too underpowered. My go to for rabbit hunting with maybe a coyote opportunity is the .22WMR. If it’s around 100yds I know I can safely take a lung shot if the head isn’t exposed and know I’m getting more than enough penetration for the kill.

    No doubt the .17 HMR is a capable round. It's fast and flat-shooting. Not much aiming off do to at distance, compared to the .22 long rifle. But dead is dead and the .22 is easily capable of taking rabbits at the same distance as .17s, even if the .22 isn't as devastating in the terminal effect department (although CCI Stingers ad Remington Yellow Jackets, do a very good job). Plus the .22 being more than twice the bullet weight of a .17 handles wind a lot better. It may not shoot as flat, but it will not be blown about by wind (especially gusting wind). Plus .22 ammo is significantly cheaper than .17 and more readily available. I prefer 22.

I prefer the 17 over the 22 but have taken beavers with both. I find for me personally I prefer the flatter 17 trajectory over the 22 even though I shoot at short ranges ( usually 5 to 65 meters approx). I discovered take 2 beavers at approximately 10 ft.

Only use 17 with night vision for flat trajectory and there's a big shortage of 17HMR 17.5 grainammo in the UK at the moment. Too much like comparing apples and oranges. The .17HMR is a rimfire round that looks and performs like a center fire round. A much lighter bullet than a .22 but much higher velocity. But which caliber is "better" is subjective at best.

  • @nodresiak
    @nodresiak 9 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    .17 HMR is a niche caliber. It is good at extending your range slightly longer than .22 magnum but does not carry the punch that the .22 magnum 30 to 40 gr bullets have on larger tougher game like woodchuck. The .22 LR in skilled hands will kill way out there and does a fraction of meat damage of the .17 HMR. Rabbits are one of the easiest game animals to kill. They succumb to wounds that would keep a raccoon,woodchuck, or fox fighting a good deal longer. Lb for Lb rabbits are the weakest of game animals and the cheapest of pellet rifles will put them downs at 20yds.

    2:25....It all depends what you are comfortable shooting with. I have hit targets out to 250 yards with 22LR. Not easy, but doable. But I also have a VERY accurate 22. It also demands that I only use ONE type of ammunition. Most people will not plunk-down the money for a Vorqurtensen, but it will put the rounds on target if you do your job. You need a very good scope and a very good shooting placement. Very picky.
    The 17 HMR is less picky and will give you shots offhand that will pass-up the Vorqurtensen. But at what cost?
    Rifle, rounds, and less training. 17HMR is for casual shooters. 22LR is for Experts.
    Case in point:......5.56 iron sights at 130 yards with a red dot. 28 out of 30 rings the steel.
    22-250 at 130 yards with a Leupold 4x16 scope. All rounds hit within a .445 area. If I handload the 22-250,......all bets are off. 300 meters and a group of .30 with sandbags and a bench.
    My 22 Hornet shoots off sandbags at 250 to .32 diameter. And that is a pistol! It is the nut behind the recoil pad when it comes to innate accuracy.
    Rabbit head is huge when you look down the sights of a RWS Diana 34 Classic in 5.5 mil. At least out to 50 meters. Which is where that rifle kills at.

    The .17HMR is great for small animals but this video kind of proves my point on why I prefer the .22WMR just for it’s flexibility. Out to 125yds both rounds can easily hit a target, even the .22 if zeroed correctly. The .17 is just too small for foxes/coyotes imo. I’ve seen people take lung shots with the .22 Mag and get surprisingly good penetration, nowhere near a .223 Rem but surprising for such a small round.

  • @PeterPutz82
    @PeterPutz82 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I've owned both .17 and .22 at the same time, Although yes, the .17 is a superior round, you can't beat the versatility of the .22. I enjoy plinking and shooting bunnies and pesky birds and I found switching between two rifles (and scopes) to be problematic when figuring out holds and getting used to ballistics. I found it's best to stick to one rifle, one calibre and be an expert at that rifle. Also, ammunition costs for .22 is cheaper and more readily available than .17. I can get a bulk pack of Federal and shoot all day long. Again, in terms of practice, the .22 will get you shooting more, which = better, more precise, more reliable shots.
    This goes for the larger calibres as well. I basically own my .22 Savage and a .270 Win. Although .270 Win is overkill for a lot of smaller game like foxes etc, I can be proficient at it, knowing exactly where to hold and how the gun behaves. I can try out many different rounds until I find one the gun likes, then bulk buy or reload.
    So in summary, less guns is better, be proficient with what you have and forget about exotic calibres. Old tried and tested is the way to go. The caveat to this would be if you only shoot bunnies and don't own a .22, then yes buy a .17.

    17 hmr is probably the winner on rabbits . But not so much on larger small to medium game where I hunt / shoot, QLD Australia . There are rabbits , but also so hares , foxes , wild cats , wild dogs , dingos , goats , pigs . With a perfect brain shot the 17 hmr will do but 9 times out of 10 it's not perfect conditions . I have 2 22 magnums one open sighted erma lever action & a new Lithgow made in Australia bolt action . The 22 magnum out to 70 yards with open sights field shooting will take care of all the animals above up to about 30 - 35 kgs About 65-70lbs with shoulder/chest shots. Pigs of 35 kgs is the upper limit. I haven't used the Lithgow yet but that will be my go too spot lighting rifle from now on. In my neck off the woods 22 mag offers a tad more versatility using 45 & 50 gr bullets . I would really have like to see a .20 rim fire magnum , or new plus p ( higher pressure ) 22 mag made for the newer rifles. Ie 40 gr at a honest 2000+ fps or 50gr @ 1750 . We still don't have a true 150 meter rim fire that's capable of head shooting Roos reliably that cheaper than 223. That would sell like hot cakes down under & we now have the 3 locking lug Lithgow action that could handle a higher pressure cartridge .

    I had a chance to shoot a 17HMR last year. At 35 yards we easily held 1/4 inch or less in the prone position. Went out to 50 yards, but unfortunately the wind started kicking up to maybe 25 or so and the bullets just went every which way. Very easily pushed around by the wind, and I would say much easier than even a 22LR. I can see if you spent a lot of time well past 100 yards that perhaps the 17HMR could have value, but zero to 100 yards I really fail to see the point, especially considering the exuberant cost difference.

      @srspower 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's true, it is very much a question of range. If its beyond 50 metres the .17hmr trumps the .22lr subsonic. But less than that? The .22lr sub is king :)

    • @ARCHER684
      @ARCHER684 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** I disagree if the subsonic can travel faster then 2550ps ( which i doubt it) then the .22lr is no match. There is so much incredible energy from the ballistic hornady bullets that at close range the damage is fantastic. I own a 93r17 hmr and have shot many pests with it at close range and even up to 200 yards and the damage was incredible. The 93r17 does have a bad side though, and that is, it is so much fun to shoot that you find it eats the bullets which are quite expensive.

    • @srspower
      @srspower 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** The humble .22lr sub isn't king because of any glorifying factor. It is king because it costs considerably less and makes considerably less sound than the .17hmr. And if you use segmented ammo it is just as safe and a lot more powerful than you'd expect for a .22lr so gets the job done.

    Not really a comparison video per say. Plus the title was vague, just said .22. Is that lr, short, magnum, etc.? Personally I prefer
    .22 LR. It's reliable, accurate, affordable, and has alot of options in variety. Maybe I would see things differently if I had to shoot rabbit and squirrel at 150-200 yards, but my garden isn't that big. I mostly shoot them at 10-20 yards, and do a lot of target shooting with the Kids at 100 yards. So perhaps it's the application rather than the caliber that makes one round more effective than another.

    Cost.
    Haven't priced ammo in Aus since I was asked to grab a box for a mate a few years ago. $230 per 500 compared to $40-$70 per 500 in .22LR. I'll go through that many in a few nights out west. Unless you were restricted by law to have a rimfire, I see no purpose in the HMR. You could download a .17 Remington or Hornet and ammo would be much cheaper and more accurate with better bullet selection. One thing I do know, whichever .17 you choose, be prepared to clean it often. They foul quick and accuracy goes with it. The .22 just keeps on going and you'll likely never wear a barrel out in your lifetime.

    Myself I sooner the .22 lr as the ammo is cheaper if it’s windy out the .22 don’t drift as much off aim, if you suppress the.17 it’s still louder than the .22 as the bullet is so fast and cracks through the air which the .22 subsonic don’t as its speed is much less, also the .17 barrel rifling do wear sooner than the .22 lr, so personally myself i prefer the .22lr

    I don't really agree with .17 HMR being better and shooting farther. My .22 Mag will easily hit game at 200 and be consistent and still have plenty of punch to take down game. The .17 HMR has more issues with wind because of its weight and costs more than .22 MAG as well. I'm not knocking the .17 HMR, I just prefer the 22 MAG over the .17.

    I prefer the .22 mag over my .17HMR. Probably because I shoot it more often due to the heavier bullet weights. I killed a coyote with my .22 mag at 292 yrds The first shot I shot low but nailed him on the second shot. I actually figured it was only about 250yrds when I made the shot. It wasn’t until a few months later I went back and ranged it with a range finder that I discovered it was 292.

    I would no doubt enjoy the 17 but I have several vintage walnut stock heavy 22s. All topped with quality old school Weaver glass, I would doubt you could entice me to trade. 22s are cheap to feed, ammo is everywhere and I know how to shoot the guns. I really would like to try the 17, and I got millions of frikking rabbits around. Just wish I could rent one for a bit, if I liked it I would probably add a new gun to the safe.

    Everyone's completely focused on the cost of the ammo, but what about the rifle itself? I believe .17 hmr rifles are much more specialized and often more expensive and with less customization options. I just bought a perfectly good Rossi .22 breakdown rifle for 89 USD and there is NOTHING more reliable and customizable than a Ruger 10/22.

    I don't think anyone claims the issue is it being that hard to find 17hmr rounds, it's that the selection of guns that shoot it is limited, which is fine if you're a hunter looking for a single small game rifle, there are enough to choose from. But if you're a new shooter who enjoys plinking cans and going to the range, or loyal to a certain brand like a lot of people are, .22lr still offers like a thousand guns to choose from.

      @@joshuaesposito208 , while it is heavier and slower there are documented articles on the 22 wmr being more effective within 150 yrds on coyote sized mammals. Also in some states you can legally hunt deer with the 22wmr, not that I would advise it. I live in the northeast where 150 yard shot or less is usually the norm. If I was hunting prairie dogs at 300 yrds the 17 HMR would be my choice . So when I say the 22wmr has more dropping power it does in my application.

    Bought a .17 HMR recently and I am amazed at the negativity you get when you do. Ammo is plentiful and cheap, especially compared to the .22 Magnum. Bought a box of 50 Hornady .17 HMR 17 grain V-Max for $13. .22 Magnum, no gun shop within 65 miles (and I checked) has any, and hasn't had any for 6 months and if and when you do for it, it will be well over $20 a box and then some. As for .22 Long Rifle, if I am 50 yards or so, which is common where I live, squirrels and rabbits are ok, but for varmints like fox and others, it will be the .17 HMR every time. Some think you need a .223 to kill them. I used to get on great with a .22 Hornet but the cost of the ammo and then having to reload it didn't seem worth it again so I got the .17 HMR.

      I have a ton of respect for the 22 wmr. It’s what the 17 hmr was derived from. With that being said, the 22 wmr has been trumped. I’ve lung shot coyotes out to 300 and killed em. And not small coyotes either. Foxes, groundhogs, rabbits, opossums, skunks, raccoons, fischers, all have fallen and all at considerable distance. I have no doubt that you individually have great skill with your 22 wmr, which makes it deadly. But subtracting the human factor, the 17 hmr is my choice. And I like the fact it’s not much slower than some high powered rounds.

    • @cs-rj8ru
      @cs-rj8ru 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 17HMR had a little more of an advantage over the 22WMR in some aspects when it first was introduced. The 30gr V MAX load for the 22WMR really narrowed the field in my opinion.
      The 17HMR is slightly more accurate than the 22WMR with the 30gr V Max...Having said that, I regularly shoot 1/2-3/4" groups with the 30gr V Max load @100yds on calm days, comparing pretty favorably to the 17HMR. (The old days of cheap 22WMR loads shooting paper plate size groups are now history).
      I like both the 22WMR and the 17HMR, having to choose I personally prefer the 22WMR and have sold off my 17HMR rifles. (Everyone has their own niche in this case).
      what I REALLY like are the 17HM2 and the 17WSM....
      The 17WSM is a GREAT Cartridge but the disastrous way it was introduced to the shooting world has pretty much signed it's own death warrant.....
