@v6 The average price of new car in the U.S. is $47k. Half of new car buyers pay less, and most people don't buy new cars at all. I paid $22k (plus tax and title) for a 2020 Bolt EV Premier with 8300 miles six months ago. The condition was practically new. I still love it. Someone bought it in 2020 and hardly drove it presumably because of the fire FUD, but so much the better for me. CCS charging infrastructure isn't everything it could be either, and I can imagine some people giving up after a few road trips. You really need to be committed to get over the initial hump.
The base Model 3 costs nearly $40k, and it doesn't qualify for the tax credit because Tesla uses LFP batteries from China. A new Mitsubishi Mirage starts at $17k. Teslas are still too expensive for at least half the population, with below the median income, even 60-70% of the population. If Tesla wants to reach that market, most of the market, it needs less costly options. The Model 3 was supposed to be this option, but the price is still too high. That's why Tesla plans to build the Model 2 (or whatever it'll be called). You're arguing with Tesla, not me.

Neither is the demise of all competition: if Tesla ends up a monopoly it will face all kinds of headwinds from regulators and it is definitely going to slow the ICE transition. This is not a newly announced car. Tesla is building low volume but interesting vehicles while it is developing the virtually inexhaustible battery supply in house and with contracts to ensure that it can build the Gen 3 and semi in volume. When production is started it needs to have everything, including cells, in the pipeline to ramp and meet demand. A factory waiting on parts losses money. A product that I'll never own is not the best ever product !for me!. I'd much rather see the $25k (or $27k or even $30k) vehicle roll off the assembly line. Tesla already sells the Model S and Model X. I doubt that the Roadster will increase its brand appeal significantly. Everyone already knows that $100k vehicles accelerate faster than $20k vehicles. So what?
No. I don't want something like that. I drive on highways with 65 mph speed limits, not on racetracks. My Bolt already accelerates better than most vehicles on the road. I already win at traffic lights and making left turns. Most EVs do. 0-60 in a second (with rockets from SpaceX!) is ridiculous overkill for professional racers and wealthy speed demons with private tracks. How large is that market? Will the Roadster even recover its R&D cost? I wouldn't be surprised if these 0-60 in a second rockets aren't even street legal.
Sounds like another boondoggle squandering Tesla's R&D money engineered by Musk, like Solar City and humanoid robots and the ever-mythical robotaxi. I'm not saying that autopilot and FSD are wasted R&D, but all the hype about robotaxis "next year" only disappoints Tesla customers as well as provoking lawsuits.
I wish Apple would finance Aptera production in exchange for an Apple badge on the vehicles. Seems perfect for the Apple brand. They might find a way to invest some of their self-driving tech too. Aptera is currently committed to OpenPilot which has significant limitations like only one front-facing camera.

Yes but when the $100K vehicle blows past the ones costing many time more that generates excitement. As happened with the S plaid. The new roadster, SpaceX, is the first production, maybe only, car to be fitted with cold gas thrusters. What it can do will only be limited by how much compressed nitrogen they can store on the car. If one can still call it a car.
Tesla needs to be in the public eye while it prepares for Gen 3 around the globe. This does that. It makes the people who earned the cars happy. And a few engineers at Tesla are going to have gobs of fun while we hopefully watch it happen.

@old3087 It doesn't excite me a bit, and the Model S already blows past most of its competition. Seriously, how many people really care about a high-end sports car with rocket assist that'll subject its passengers to six G? What happens when someone takes this car on the road and loses control of it? That'll put Tesla in the public eye for sure. The vast majority of people are more interested in a car they might actually drive someday. Only drag racing fans and Tesla fan boys care about this car. I guarantee you that my wife has never heard of it, and she'll roll her eyes when I tell her about it.

I think Elon is setting everyone up to be disappointed. He has these wonderful pipe dreams that he wants to do but when it comes to reality they can't be made like he wants them to be. Like the 500 mile cyber truck with the loading ramp in the tailgate.

Most Tesla products exceed the promised specs. The Roadster already did, the Model S Plaid is essentially the Roadster for half the price.
The Cybertruck is also better then promised in many ways. The cost is mostly inflation, and the combination of early production ramp and insane demand. And they could have hit the range too, but since 2019 the circumstances changed, it's no longer that important. With the far bigger Supercharger network you don't need high range anymore, weight and cost are more important. What likely didn't work out is the 4680 cell, which is significantly behind schedule. With the cells they imagined in 2020, the CT would have had much higher range at the same weight and cost.
But this has nothing to do with the CT itself. The competitors have similar ranges with bigger batteries.

@@andrasbiro3007 Agree the truck Tesla delivered may not be the exact truck shown in 2019 but it is a better truck but for the range. Tesla could have used a 200KWh battery pack for more range but that would have made for a very heavy truck. This was the original plan. They made the right decision for the time. GM is selling truck(s) with that size pack if you really want one. Might have to be a hummer.

Apple car play should just require 8 cameras, and 3 lidar to work. Then Apple could get data from 90% of cars on the road. Problem solved.

Apple going big or staying home in the EV/autonomy competition are both terrifying for legacy automakers. Going big doubles the high tech competition; staying home demonstrates the difficulty of competing with Tesla products. Only one celebrating tonight is Tesla.

    • @restonthewind

Tesla definitely has a huge lead in EVs in the U.S. I wouldn't say that it's insurmountable, but it's huge.
But BYD can also celebrate, and it'll eventually challenge Tesla in the U.S. if U.S. protectionism doesn't keep it out. Stellantis claims to sell EVs profitably now, and other legacy automakers will as well eventually, assuming that EV adoption continues to grow. If EV adoption stalls in the U.S., legacy auto will celebrate biding their time.
I doubt that EV mandates will survive political pressure much longer. They're unpopular in most of the country. Trump will be elected POTUS, if he can stay out of jail, and he'll roll back EV mandates as much as he can. He'll also double down on anti-China protectionism, so he's a two-edged sword ...

I wouldn't put much stock in anything BYD puts out number wise. Because they include their hybrid sales with their EV sales. Also they are supported and backed by the CCP, a communist party by the way, they will do anything to make itself look good. Just because a company from china makes the most of something doesn't mean that it's good, to include BYD.@@restonthewind

@arty1762 We'll see how Tesla does with AI and robotics. Optimus is still pie in the sky. Tesla earns nothing from it yet, and less than 10% of Teslas have FSD. If you want to speculate on Tesla's success in this arena, go ahead, but don't pretend that you aren't speculating.
