    This is funny because it's exactly what I was thinking about these days... I have mostly been a boulderer for years. I did plateau. First I started to climb more and it worked. I broke my first plateau quite quickly. Then I had the feeling that my progression was slowing down again... I tried to do the same thing and I could feel a little improvement but nothing spectacular... Then I did some building stuff in my gym to help them put some new walls up for about 2 month... I climbed again and bam.... I broke my plateau haha Changing your lifestyle works too! Finally, I hit my third plateau and at the same time some motivation... At that moment I met a new friend who was all about outdoor sport climbing! I got introduce and I love it now. I can feel that it got me through my bouldering plateau without even noticing it haha And now..... I need to work again to progress as a sport climber but the motivation is back and it's going to be easier I guess. Anyway.... Thanks for the video and keep mixing things up =D
    but for myself, please do not make your video shorter... I have the feeling that we can get some clear information because you put the time in it! See you!

      This is glorious, I've been looking for "how to break through bench press plateau" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Conabel Muscle Marmsome - (just google it ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my partner got amazing results with it.

    I love this video. I did all of these things naturally without a trainer. If I couldn't do boulders then I'd switch to rope and move through the gym until the grades improved. Then I'd get stuck on one hard problem and pour everything into it until it would go. Didn't fret about losing anything because the overall balance of the body mind was improving and that stuff comes back readily. A+ tips and I tend to watch the long winded videos and appreciate the detail you go into. Your videos have helped me improve since I started climbing 3 years ago. - One recommendation of things that have also helped me is working Hard routes (subjective to individual) but refusing to accept any beta assistance. This has helped me develop problem solving skills and works the mind quite heavily if its a type of problem I have never seen or worked on before.

    Love what you said about people tending to do what they are more comfortable with. I guess you nail it down a bit here. Two things I have found to be very important: be psyched about climbing and progression and do more nasty stuff to your body and it will adapt to hard: if you don't like sloapers do more sloapers, etc.

    Awesome videos Mr Monkey. Learning about periodisation seems to have so much potential. This is better than all the climbing training books and I’ve read all the obvious ones. Thank you.

    First and foremost Mani, great video! It rang true with my climbing situation in many ways, and offered a lot of insight into achieving seamless progression in my abilities.
    Climbing has only come into my life recently, but it was love at first send. Your videos(and some others @AverageClimber) have really had an immense impact on how I approach each route/problem; which has not only seen my skills increase, but my connection with climbing has intensified. Thank you!
    About a week into my first plateau, I found this video a huge help in identifying some ways to progress; thank you for that!
    I hope that you are achieving all of your goals and aspiring to the dreams to have! Thank you for the impact you've had and keep up the awesome work!
    P.S.
    I have a minor background in audio/visual editing, music composition/recording, and other things like that. I've got a few points of feedback that I think may help in increasing the clarity of your videos while trimming down on time. If you're interested, please message me on TH-cam or email me at jordank.terry@gmail.com!
    I wish you the best of luck whether or you not we communicate. Keep up the great work!!

    This last summer I stopped going to the gym because the weather was too good to stay inside. I could only go climb on the rock once a week or once every two weeks because of work. So I started to train on a tree in my garden. Doing that for about three months in combination with once a week or once every two weeks of climbing on rock… never pushing myself to climb harder grades. After summer I went back to the climbing gym and I just crushed the boulderproblems I couldn't even start before summer. My fingerstrength, endurance and core strength were at an all time maximum, just because I took my training to the tree in my garden + I gave my boudy a good rest from the hard routes I was trying and being frustrated about. There is a lot of truth in your words Mani. I changed my climbing training in a way I thought I would become less strong, and I became a lot stronger.

    Great video. Periodization and switching routines is how I avoid plateaus. I find it also really just helps keep up my motivation and not get bored.

  • @climbscience4813
    @climbscience4813 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I have quite an interesting story with plateaus. The way I broke two plateaus was ...getting injured. Seriously. I first had some stuff going on with my right wrist, and then with my left wrist and while I was recovering I only did enough training to not lose significant amounts of strength. After I did that for about 6-8 weeks and started training again I started making progress again and as I didn't lose a lot of strength in my injury break, I was stronger than before the injury. I think it was actually the process of giving my joints and connective tissue a break, but also making my body sensitive to training again. So, before my current training block I had one month of "slacking". I still have to retest my strength and see what kind of progress I made to see if it made a significant difference. I heard by numerous people that such "breaks" can be really effective and from my experience they actually are.

      Thanks for the input, we gonna talk about the rest phenomenon in relation to plateau breaking in part 2 ;)

    • @climbscience4813
      @climbscience4813 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I may give you a cautious advice, if you can do it without pain, I would try to still train your fingers to a degree. For the injuries that I had, it was only dangerous to pronate or supinate my wrist significantly, but I could still train dead hangs. I basically trained around the injury and only to a degree that allowed me to keep my strength in the fingers. If you can still train core or pull-ups without any effect on your wrist, then really smashing them can be a pretty good idea too. ;-)

    • @climbscience4813

      That does sound pretty similar! I actually never figured out what was the cause exactly, so I can't give you a name for it. Let me know how it worked out for you! Good luck!

    Another awesome video Mani! Yes, the longer videos can be discouraging to start watching, but sometimes they're worth it. I found that climbing with others, that are more experienced than you can be really helpful for progressing, or just someone that climbs in a different style than you.

    Really nice video, with me it was exactly as you described! I am climbing in different climbing halls a lot and was always walking around to find the hard problem that I could do straight away to feel good for that climbing day. Then I got stuck at a plateau for a while and I had a lesson. Basically the teacher told me to enjoy difficult moves more, as that is the whole point of climbing. After this I have broken through that plateau and also can enjoy doing a single hard move, which almost always works in every climbing place. I am practising things I couldn't do now and have gotten much better at dynamic climbing. I now don't have to walk as much in the different climbing halls and can climb on many more problems.

    Klettern ist manchmal wirklich frustrierend! Mangelnde Technik und falsches Training sind meist ein Grund das das Plateau unnötig lange besteht! Die Bereitschaft aus der Komfortzone raus und Schwächen anzugehen ist meist auch nicht da!
    Es ist unglaublich hart ein regelmässiges Sturztraining zu machen wenn Sturzangst besteht, aber die einzige möglichkeit sich effektiv zu verbessern.
    Ich hab da einfach fast 15 Jahre gebouldert und Toprope geklettert!
    Das Positive dabei: Fontainebleau hat sich unglaublich positiv auf meine Technik ausgewirkt und heute hab ich nach 22 Jahren klettern umso mehr Spass am scharfen ende des Seiles:)
    Klettern ist einfach ein unglaublich geiler Sport!
    Tolles Video das mir sogar noch hilft meine Englisch Kentnisse zu verbessern:)

    Ey Mani, wenns ums hangboarden geht, war dein channel der Beste, danke für alle Tipps und Tricks! Ich hab jedoch ein Anliegen, was ich mit dir teilen wollte und dieses ist Antihydral.
    Es gibt kaum Informationen zur Nutzung und darüber was es ist, welchen Einsatzbereich es hat und warum Daniel Woods meinte es wäre ein gamechanger.
    Ich war kürzlich das erste mal draußen bouldern, am Sneznik in Tschechien. Da ich wusste, dass der Sandstein dort sehr scharf und meine Hände immer schwitzig und weich sind, probierte ich Antihydral. Joa, alle außer mir mussten tapen und es hat geklappt, aber es wär cool, wenn du das mal auf einer größeren Bühne ansprechen würdest.

    Thx Mani for your video! I also like your long Videos and your information. If people are really interested ,they'll watch it anyway! ;-)
    Also made great experiences with changing things up :-) totally agree in this point! My biggest Problem is to find a good training routine that fits for me. Last month too much/or too long climbing just forced me to do a longer break...and i immediatly got better. Kind of realized that it was kind of overtraining for my body that kept me stuck at a plateau. Really hard to accept if you love climbing and sports and just want to enjoy it more often...and you have no voice that forces you to "stop now"...just not feeling the point between too less and too much :-( How did you handle.the change from 2 climbing sessions a week and integrating a bit of core/ strength and mobility training...to even more climbing and training? You mentioned that at some point you cannot focus on everything anymore...and to just do a little break here and there. Do you use shedules? You have any Tipps vor starting a training diary? How did you find your routines (Optimum training vs regeneration time?) when do you know that it's too much or too less? What's your focus in a random training week (when having no explicit longterm goal)?

    I live in Mexico and I was stuck in a plateau but I didn't change anything and then I went to San Antonio for 5 weeks and there was a bouldering gym there but it was 18+ years so I couldn't go, so I went to a gym with a climbing wall but it was sport climbing with some bouldering but in general it felt really easy and I though that when I went back to Mexico I would do worse but I actually broke the plateau and I was so confused since as I already said most of the routes in SA were not hard but with this video I realized what helped me progress.

    The plateau where you got this word sounds beautiful. In the disease there are the words crisis, i.e. the rise of the disease, the decline of the disease and remission, weakening or decrease. Those. the process of movement of disease or recovery. Plateau geographical designation (fr. Plateau, from plat - "flat") - an elevated plain with a flat or wavy, weakly divided surface, bounded by distinct ledges from the neighboring plain spaces of the earth's surface. The plateau does not have movement because it is a plane. displacement due to the shift of tectonic plates. We are constantly on it on the plateau. It does not rise and fall. I did not understand. What does medicine and geography do. There is a name stable remission. Reconvalescence is a recovery process. normal life of the body after an illness. Stable (lat. Equilibrium) state of health. Mani, on what you said at 10:20: Right now, my middle finger hurts, tendon-wise, just as an example. Could you elaborate how can I still train but avoid strain on a certain finger or tendon? For example, will bouldering big volumes help my fingers heal? Or, what should I do to give a rest to my elbow?

    • @ManitheMonkey
      @ManitheMonkey  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends on what caused you finger/elbow to start hurting in the first place. Avoid that, and avoid any pain in general. Climb soft stuff, keep the blood flow going. Try to progress in other things in the meantime, do some calisthenics and don't forget to throw in some corrective exercise and stretching. This way you will come back with new skills once your stuff is healed up, and you will very likely get past your previous level soon.

    Hey, I really enjoy your videos and information! But I don't think you should compress the information, the ones who are interested and the ones who want to improve they will wach the long videos. It's good because then the massage really get's clear ;) I see it alot in certain channels who make shorter, "better" and more entertaining videos, they get more views but the core of the content slowly gets miserable and after a while they are just another part of the stupid entertainment rain.
    One thing climbing teaches us is that improvment needs time and effort. Watching your videos should require a bit of effort so the information get a certain type of value. How do you think about that?
    Keep on climbing!

    • @ManitheMonkey
      @ManitheMonkey  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for your awesome comment, I can fully agree, I definitely don't want to become part of the stupid entertainment rain :) Value comes first, and if it takes a little longer to explain, well then it will take a little longer. Keep crushing!

    Hi Mani, I'm a fan and have watch most of your channel in a random as needed fashion, so maybe I missed this. I was watching your episode on weight/height/etc. from August 2017 and I noticed something I haven't seen you talk about: your feet, and climber's foot issues in general. I noticed when you put your feet on the scale that measure bone mass, fat, water, etc., that you have lots of calluses, maybe the starting of bunions, etc. Lovely as your feet are, they are showing signs of the sport. The reason I ask is I have bunion issues and since you are such a sober, scientific guy, I'd like to hear your thoughts on climber's foot health. Any chance?
