S1 - Ep 05 - Flat tyre, low fuel and no cell phone signal!

  • We had to leave Kromrivier Cederberg Park and travel to Clanwilliam to have the flat tyre repaired, we are low on fuel and no cell phone signal. This day really taught me the importance of planning and being prepared for almost anything on the gravel roads and back roads we are travelling. Because of this we had to change our plans and route. We saw the amazing Clanwilliam dam and also crossed over the Middleberg pass which made it worth it.
    We did however enjoy some beautiful gravel roads.

    Truly beautiful, love you guys, you making me homesick here in UK , been binge watching the last week or so since i discovered your channel. Hey, you guys are more 'overlanders' than just tourists. Definitely 4x4 and all the gear needed so you can cook on the gravel roads and save a ton of money.

    Wow - this area reminds me so much of the Colorado Rockies where I lived with my first husband 15 years working, raising a family and climbing some very awesome 14'ers.

      I still can't believe we made it with the petrol we had. 😅

      Luckily we made it back to Clanwilliam and all was well again! We did have a few worried moments along the way. And the fact that there was no cellphone signal either, didn't help much. 😨🚗

    Just love the openness of the Karoo. For a claustraphobic like me, I can breathe so much easier. Thanks for sharing

      We agree completely. 😁 We love the Cederberg just as much, it's a spectacularly beautiful area. And, even if things go wrong sometimes, the beauty that surrounds one, makes it so much easier to deal with. 😁

    Yes the first time I traveled that road therough the Cederberge I also did not know there were no cellphone signal. When I eventually drove out again after about 4 days my family was quite upset that I did not phone them. But that is a problem in many areas in South Africa and funny enough I have done overlanding in quite a few countries in Africa and there was always cellphone reception..even in the game parks they have cellphone towers. In Tanzania I even saw a Maasai Mara with his red dress riding a bicycle and talking on his cellphone 🙂

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      How incredible that other African countries have better reception than South Africa! And here we are thinking that everything is better at the southern tip! 🤷🏼‍♂️ Cellphone reception is quite a sore point for us. It's actually unbelievable how often we don't have cellphone signal where we travel and rather frustrating at times. Not much we can do about that, so we push on! 😁🚗

    I love your videos, as I have done a fair amount of traveling off the beaten track myself in the past
    What I would ĺike to see with the videos is a clear route map/description as I like to retrace the trips on maps.
    And, please mention what car you are using.
    I just love watching your videos, many areas I remember from years back.
    Please keep posting such nice videos.

      Thank you, I'm glad you enjoy our videos. I do provide a map with our route at the beginning of each video and it will be quite easy for you to check on Google Maps if you need any further info or greater detail. Since I do the graphics of the map after our trip, I trace the exact route which we did. We rent a small vehicle with high ground clearance and it so happened that it was a Renault Kwid the first time and now we request a Kwid every time because it can quite easily navigate 95% of roads, provided one takes it slow. 😁🚗

    Wow the area between Touwsberg and Sutherland was where I stayed on a farm for almost a year. We had a bit of cellphone reception only at a certain spot on the 2000ha farm. Your incident with the flat tyre reminded of the time when my bakkie had a flat tyre and the spare also got a flat tyre. We had to stop every 5 minutes to pump air into the tyre with the mini compressor. Your channel is awesome fantastic. Could you please include the names of the places where you overnight as you seem to find the gems.

      I can just imagine that. My nerves were shot. But it was amazing. Yes, we will start including the places names where we overnight. It is a beautiful part of the country though. Thanks for your support.

    Can you please the route you took from Clanwilliam to Sutherland?

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Certainly. It was about a 300km drive from Clanwilliam through Citrusdal, over the Middelberg Pass. We turned off the R303 at the Koue Bokkeveld Primary School and followed the road to the R355, where we turned left. We continued until the Tankwa Farm Stall, turned right and followed the road to Sutherland. 🚙
