    SMT V actually isn't about grinding, its more about adaptation by changing your strength and weakness and fusing demons that work against the boss. Grinding for stats doesn't greatly help with bosses as much as just changing your party to resist or block the bosses specific attacks. Defeating the abscesses and unlocking skills is very helpful, like the ability for your demons to also use items. Also there's no shame in playing casual because this game is still challenging. Its not like other modern games like RE Village where playing on easy makes the enemy monsters AI dumb & scared of the player.

      @@frostynukacola Nah, many play this game without grinding but if you want to grind that's your choice. Of course leveling is important to fuse higher level demons but you don't need to mindlessly grind random monsters since there's plenty of side quests to help with leveling and even items that instant level your demons and even yourself. The creators of this game clearly didn't intend for players to grind.

      This comment convinced me to put this game on my Xmas list. I think older gamers like myself are used to old school stuff like Phantasy Star and Dragon Quest. For those games 9 times out of 10 grinding is 100% the answer. I'm intrigued by a JRPG that takes the opposite approach. I'm stuck in my ways and I've been playing essentially the same JRPG for 30 years. Time for a change.

  • @basilchie4
    @basilchie4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +308

    The reason why SMT seems so hard is because you play it completely different from most rpgs. You don't ever really have to grind. You build your party to counter the boss you're fighting. Play the battle once then figure out their attacks/weaknesses, demon fuse/select gear, and come back. If you don't, you're going to get wiped. Hope this helps!

    @Turky2137 2 ปีที่แล้ว +194

    Griding doesn't really work in SMT you should try to get a team that resists what the boss uses and you should try to change your essences (you can do it in essence fusion) it's ok to have some of your party members not resist it just remember that if MC is weak to dark or light he can be instakilled, during the big shiny attacks try using dampeners (they're in shop and negate an attack for the entire party) if your whole party doesn't negate the attack. Remember to use spyglasses it gives you the information on resistances and attacks of bosses. Oh and I nearly forgotten sleep/charm/seal are super useful in this game you can stop hydra from attacking at all before 2nd phase by spamming one of those at the end of your turns

    • @Turky2137

      But hey the good part is that this series eliminates the need to grind for levels and is more focused on building a party suited for a challenge

    Yep, you played SMT "wrong". You got to the boss too soon, two hours is not enough to have explored the first area well enough by that point. You're also not supposed to grind at all, the XP you gain is mainly from subquests and exploration, which is always enough to overcome the bosses entirely. Clear the abscesses, do everything in the area, find a bunch of Miman... and most importantly, build your team around the boss' weaknesses and attacks. Grinding is an absolute last resort if you've got literally 0 money or something.

    No SMT V is not grindy, that's a trap for the unwary. You need to get into the mechanics of the game, the demon fusions and understanding weaknesses and bonuses in combat, to really "get good" at it, you customize you're character and demon party to whatever you're fighting. Once you do it's actually kinda easy. Trying to build a party like it's a typical JRPG is what leads to frustration, making a party that's kinda good at everything but not great at anything just doesn't work.

    SMT5 has a system that lets you set affinities for the main character and also teach allies including the MC new moves. So the strat for the Hydra and many bosses would be to make it so your MC is resistant or able to block the element of attacks the Hydra does and that your allies all have attacks that can target the Hydra's weakness.

  • @glitchasaur
    @glitchasaur 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Wood, with SMT5 you can use dampners (poison, lightening, fire, etc.) which mean every time a boss tries to one shot you, you laugh at them when their move is blocked. Also you can give your main character invulnerability to each bosses main special attack once you figure it out. For instance i destroyed a particularly hard boss second try by choosing monsters with resistance for fire and physical attacks, and making my mc just block fire. Check the shadow place with silver woman at save points and learn how everything there works, then you'll be fine 👍
    Also learn how the critical attack system works; each monster which does a critical hit or attacks an opponents weakness will give you an extra turn.
    Also every time you get to a certain level check which monsters you can fuse together to make better monsters & make sure you keep the best moves from your old monsters

    Yea to be fair smt is known for being one of the harder jrpgs out there. Word of advice think less on grinding and more on strategizing around the bosses attacks qnd weaknesses, smt isn't really a grindy game since most exp comes from side quest and progressing through the game, rarely did I ever need to grind. It was only when I went for the true ending that I needed to grind because of one specific side quest needed to get that ending. So focus on making better demons and exploring the world and you should be good. The moment the gameplay mechanics click with you the game will become that much more fun.

    Dread is by far my GOTY. It means a lot to me because it struck the same chord Super Metroid did over 2 decades ago when I was a kid. Samus Returns was ok, but it just fell short of that standard (AM2R did M2 infinitely better, imho), but Dread hit it virtually flawlessly. In a day and age where 2d is deemed second class, the fact this game manages to not only stand out but also iterate heavily on the genre and make it to so many GOTY lists is quite an accomplishment.

It's trial and error sometimes esp without any guides and i did it without looking at any guides. Take advantage of the press turn system, use skills that enemies are weak to, use demons which have some resistances too, MC can also change affinity depending on the boss you are about to face. A weakness to light or dark can even one hit you. I hope you try it again later on.

    In college, a friend got me into Persona games. I played them in Japanese, but I didn’t understand a lot about the game because I skimmed the dialogue and didn’t know the kanji characters for all the weaknesses, etc. I played most of P3 and P4 and never managed to get past certain bosses towards the end, so I always had to stop playing. Then I played Persona 5 in English (Japanese voices) and it was so much easier. I also had learned that fusions and gaining abilities and switching personas was super important, and I had never really cared about that before. I also went into the game on Safe mode because I didn’t want the game to frustrate me to the point of giving up because I love the franchise and the story so much. I beat Persona 5 and then did a new game + and then played P5 Royal recently. I’m so glad I played on Easy and I’m glad I followed guides to an extent because it showed me which abilities I’d need, and a lot of the time, they aren’t obvious and you need particular fusions. I’m excited to play SMT V and I hope Wood goes back to it after reading these comments and realizes there is a lot of strategy involved. Pokemon games you can kind of get through just by grinding, but the SMT games and Persona games are more about abilities and fusions and you never really need to grind, which I prefer now.
    There is NO SHAME in playing games on easy mode!!! I’m a busy mom and my few hours of freedom should be spent relaxing and having fun and I don’t have hours and hours to play games on normal like I used to, depending on the game.

    With SMT5, I think the problem is that you're approaching it like you would any other RPG, "Buffs and ailments are useless, just grrind levels". With SMT, it's the opposite, you always want to be taking advantage of buffs and debuffs and instead of grinding, it's really more about fusing demons if anything. I think that's also what makes it hard for newcomers, because while being familiar with JRPGs might be a plus, it also can give you the misconception that those same principles apply here, which they don't always.

    That was your problem with SMTV. You weren't supposed to be 2 hours in for the first boss. The game is not about grinding. You have to experiment with the demons and abilities you have. Recruit and fuse new ones. Abuse the weakness and resistances to get more turns. Use buffs and debuffs. I was about 5 hours into the game before even reaching the first boss. There's no many places and sidequests to do

      @FuckOuttaHere I think the hardest part is to understand each boss at the beginning of the battle they weakness and your weaknesses and later maybe change your own weaknesses. Because once the main protagonist is down is game over so this is the most important part. I mostly would use the item to discover the weaknesses of each boss what can be easily purchased. There are most gemplay mechanics you should utilize like buff, debuff, demon fusion, using the collectible items in the shadow world to get permanent buffs through the game... But I think one of the most important parts in a boss battle are element weaknesses because if your main protagonist is weak to a certain boss element skill and he hits you is mostly a one shoot unless you play on easy mode. I finished the game at normal mode and I had a lot of fun.

    Seeing that SMTV is hard really excites me. I like to break jrpgs in half by overgriding and getting insane things, like in ff7 I got Omnislash in the first disc just for the satisfaction of oneshoting the boss, I've never played a megaten before except for the digital devil saga so I'm not sure how to compare this. As far as I can tell from the comments this is really more about adapting than grinding so I'm excited to see how to try and one up the game. Currently I have this and Nocturne ordered.

    The thing is that the problem with the Hydra Boss (or any encounter), wasn't the lack of levels. You can down the boss at level 23 at normal, or even lower. The issue you encountered, was that you probably didn't fuse the right demons, played around with the Essences taking away your weaknesses, didn't use the right skills, and the right tools (dampeners). Grinding doesn't help unfortunately, you need to plan out skills, essences, demons etc.

      you paid for access to a piece of art, but that doesn't mean that the art has to cater towards what you want. Some art is exclusionary, some of it is inclusive, but it doesn't have to be either way inherently.
      If i bought a ticket to A Clockwork Orange, and wanted to see some fun movie to chill off to and wasn't satisfied with the surreal challenging movie that I got, it's not Kubrick's fault that I wasn't satisfied with my purchase.
      and the same thing goes the other way around, if I bought a ticket to Raiders of the Lost Ark and was unsatisfied that it was just a fun action movie and not some profound work that will rest in my mind for the years to come, it's not Spielberg's fault that the movie didn't cater to what I was feeling like at the moment.
      also the guy just played SMT V wrong, grinding doesn't work, at least it doesn't work half as well as covering up your weaknesses and exploiting the boss's weaknesses (which is what the boss is trying to teach him). The series is actually pretty easy when you realize how easy it is to just exploit the systems at play.

    Honestly I love SMT V. I think I'm almost done with it with about 60hrs. I really love this game and I recommend it to JRPG fans. This is my first SMT game and I was not sure what to expect after coming red hot off of beating P4 and experiencing that series for the first time. I played on Normal and I feel like the challenge is at a good spot. Honestly I think Hydra was a very solid first boss. It set up standards well. At first I was like, this is insane how do I do this. So you start to think about it more and more. You do some essence things and bam you got the team you just have to figure out how to put the puzzle together. It's probably the coolest felling in this game is how things just click. I think it is what makes this game. And it just allows for really good boss fights. Cause some bosses can still just give you a challenge with that perfectly crafted team. But grinding isn't necessary, except if you get lost in area 4 and not realize there is a certain way you should try and travel rather than fighting the level 65+ monsters as a 55 thinking to yourself that's where you need. But this mistake and ignorance was enjoyable. Story I feel like is on the backburner until you start getting to the beef and potatoes, but that may just be me.
