- We meet "Steamboat Ed" at this year's Maker Faire Bay Area, a veteren machinist who has taken to designing shop tools that anyone can 3D print! From a simple drill press to die filers and alignment clamps, Ed's enthusiasm for making shop tools accessible is infectious! Plus, he shares with us his modular motorised rowboat project made using his printed tools.

Hope he's not from New York. They want Criminal Background Checks on 3d printers now.......
@@deplorablepiratecaptaingunberdby “they” you mean “one person in New York State congress who proposed a law that hasn’t even made it to an initial vote.”
I rarely say this but this guy is an OG! So glad he made the transition to 3D printing and design. His many experiences are immortalized in the current era of design! Awesome to see this!
Gotta ditto this!
"Steamboat Ed" is a seriously gangster name. In other contexts I'd be afraid lol as in
"Send Steamboat Ed down the Mississippi to New Orleans to take care of our 'little problem'"
3d printing is not the current era of design. I say this as a 3d printing hobbyist, 3d printing is not cutting edge its for the people at home. CNC machines for cutting aluminum are so much cooler. CNC lathes are like orgasmic. And co2 laser cutters can't even describe what is possible with one of those.
I want to be Ed when I grow up. I'm almost 50 so I better hurry up.
I'd love to see Adam sit down with Ed sometime. I think he'd explode with excitement seeing these practical engineering solutions.
I'm 25 and I was just thinking the same thing. This dude put a huge smile on my face, makes me a bit less afraid of growing old.
Yes, invite this dude for a 1 day build. I'm sure he would be ecstatic and Adam would spend hours asking him questions.
@@JD2jr. Adam: Ok we spent the last 23 hours chatting and planning... now we have one hour left to build a particle accelerator
I love the off-hand reference to his friend Lee Felsenstein. Lee was a key figure in the development of personal computers back in the 1970s. He designed the Sol-20 and Osborne 1 computers and was a founding member of the Homebrew Computer Club.
Pretty cool. Out of curiosity, I googled both of Ed and Lee. I was surprised to see that both of them are on LinkedIn. Lee's LinkedIn profile is remarkably humble for someone who is notable enough to have his own Wikipedia entry!
The Cap-tivator! I MUST HAVE SOME!!!! That is one of the best ideas I have seen in quite a long time. Rock on Ed!!
This would work quite well where FOD is a major concern. Aerospace comes to mind. I could see the use of this being written into some assembly procedures. Great idea Ed!
love the cap-tivator! would find them so useful while working in tight areas on motorcycle maintenance!
The world needs more people like Ed. So much skill and experience - so glad he’s sharing it
Can't agree with this more!!
I was wondering how he assembled all of that with his unfortunately shaky hands, but the Cap-tivator is genius! Good job, Steamboat-Ed! That is awesome!
Stumpy Nubs has a video on his issue with shaky hands and how it isn’t really and issue when working. Might be applicable here as well.
Yeah, I have shaky hands and it's really only slightly annoying at worst. Usually I just rest the side of my hand somewhere - this seems to stop all the shaking.
Very clever designs, and it shows how folks can persevere even given life's challenges. Well done Ed!
I love that he's making things that solve problems, from miniature tooling to ease of use.... that's my jam.
I hope they found their cat.
Ed is awesome!
I would buy the cap-tivator immediately!!! Genius!!!
Loved this video! Ed has a new follower on Printables! Thanks for the new connection! Truly Enjoyed!
I love this! Such wonderful ingenuity!
Really cool stuff! I will definitely be making some of these. The Cap-tivator is one of those ideas that seems so obvious, but inexplicably nobody has done it before.
This dude is awesome! He has so much enthusiasm and passion for making things and I wish him the best. Age is the great equalizer and it sucks when those who are young at heart get brought down by our limited bodies… but he’s going into old age kicking and screaming and using engineering to continue to do what he loves! I respect that.
I’m less than half his age but I have lung cancer so I understand having things taken from you because your body gives up on you… he’s got more willpower than I do… that’s for sure.
What an incredible man. Great find, Norm. Thanks for letting him share.
That was so interesting, I legit watched it all the way thru, and I rarely do for these Fair Show Off vids, but Ed's real good at spinnin a yarn! I saw my future today, and I hope to be half as interesting when I'm his age!
I've never seen Ed before.
I now kinda love him.
Definitely want to be him when I grow up.
The cap-tivator is genius too.
Steamboat Ed. Cap-tivator sold . All sizes and a few for spare. And I'll be getting that drill too.. thank you
You need to get Adam and this dude together; that would be the best meeting of makers ever!
And they both drink Snapple 😂
This guy is awesome!! Get him in the workshop with Adam!
The captivator and drill press, I'll be making those soon. :) . Awesome work Ed!
Alright, off to the 3d printer with that Die Filer i go.. What amazing Projects, Kudos to you Ed
that cap-tivator is so clever. great to see people like him :)
Some terrific ideas. I hope some profit gets generated from his hard work and clever engineering.
ed is such a great guy. met him at the san mateo fair and still have the “turbonut”
My god this man is super inspiration!! Thanks for your wonderful "Crazy Ideas" Ed!! You are a national treasure!
Ed is awesome, he has such a vibrant auora of invention
Maker Fair is such an amazing event!
What amazing work.
Ed reminds me of my later father in law, and makes me wonder what he would be doing if he was still around with all these new tools that exist now.
Wooo great guy. Loved his projects. I want Cap-tivator please
Protect this man at all costs!!
The greatest show and tell on earth is BACK, baby!
Wish I could've been there early enough to catch Adam, but still, it was just like I remembered from back in 2017-2018!
That baby drill press looks like a must-have! Even if you have a full size drill press, having a desktop one sounds like a dream for tiny things
Very cool stuff!
Love the support for the wide range of makers!
8:46 I actually spit up water laughing not expecting that savage comedy haha immediately went and got some of his work after that
Immediately looks up turbo nut on urban dictionary
Steamboat Ed is a deadset legend!
Ed seems like such a creative and passionate fellow. Keep it up Ed and all the Ed wannabe's out there!
What a gem. Love this guy.
What a wonderful man!
YAY!!!! GIFTS FROM GRAMPA!! grampas always have the coolest gifts!!! Thank you we love you grampa!😂😂❤
Social Media needs more content with old Masters like this. Thanks for posting.
That is a cool drill press, and filer. Great job Steamboat Ed!
"mean while it's got a rudder' perfect, I think i found my spirit animal!
So much experience in design i wish i had half his skills.
Always a pleasure to listen to a classic machinist tap into his decades of wisdom and experience.
I love this so much, I'm gonna check out that printables page when I get home
i'm at awe over the mind overcoming limitations. Ed is inspiring
Clicked into thsi to look at the drill press but the cap-tivator is such an aweseome idea.
Great job, Ed!
Very cool! I designed a modular battleship in highschool, but was pushed away from design. I got back into it when I hit 30 and I'm slowly designing some really specific, custom solutions and it's been a blast. This guy and his creations are a total inspiration! So cool to see his creativity and problem solving skills.
I love 3D printing useful things as well as props! I’ve designed a drain cover for my shower tub, a “bandaid” to fix a banana holder, and so many other little things.
Wow this man is a true maker!
love the rowboats
Making some smaller machines, for my 3d print processes and its awesome to see some designs.
These are awesome!!
The guy inventing things was brimming with enthusiasm. Great to see and share his ideas.
Impressive chap.
This guy is great 💯 the og is all over the new tech
Incredible!
Amazing!
!
Ed makes me realizes I am not thinking hard enough. Cool stuff
This guy is a legend! Love his tone and pace when talking, he's beyond intelligent but he never sounds like he's talking down to you, he talks to you like an equal while he's mentoring you because he probably doesn't even realize that he's so intelligent that even if hes not trying he sounds like an amazing mentor or professor.
The amount of things you could learn from this man while sitting in a room alone is insane.
That captivator is legit genius
NEED MORE OF THIS CONTENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO EXCITING!
That Cap-tivator is genius.
Love what Ed is doing and giving out to all of us!
This guy is amazing!
This interview needed Adam.
I'd love to meet him some time but I can't afford to fund him on Patreon and that seems to be the 'gateway'.
This guy us great. I could spend hours talking with him.
So good to see you promoting small scale makers.
What a creative guy!
Wow I love Steamboat Ed so much 😭
It's been too long since I've been to a maker faire
Inspirational creativity!
Cap-tivators are the most genius thing on the planet and I want to buy all of them.
Amazing. I can picture him getting along with Jamie for hours.
Wowzers! Thank you for doing this! 🙂
This was awesome. Steamboat Ed is a treasure.
Thanks to anyone, and everyone, who shone the light on Ed. I am so glad to know about him.
Ed’s a treasure. I love that he’s jumped to 3d printing.
Great video! Steamboat Ed is awesome.
Great video!
Can anyone introduce this guy to fireball tools?
Any bets on how long before Adam has a turbo nut installed?
What a cool guy. He's not just a maker, he's a true inventor.
I will show this clip to my Dad to prove that new technology is not just for younger generations.
Great video. More like this please
More to come!
He made soooo much cool and simple stuff ...
What great ideas!!
Great video norm sir😊
Awesome video! Hopefully you can feature more makers from MFBA!!
My guy A Dot Savage!
Love IT!!!
What a great human ❤
Before CA!?!
I had to look that up. Cyanoacrylate wasn't a commercial product until 1960s.
Well, almost. In the '70s when I dreamed up the fixtures I was still using Ambroid. 🙂
Gotta make a trireme with that modular rower thing.
This is my kind of maker
This guy is my hero. Steamboat Ed for president!!!
This guy reminds me a lot of Woz! I could listen to him all day 😁
Did he just name drop Lee Felsenstein as the guy who named the cap-tivator? I wonder if it's the same guy who ran the Homebrew Computer Club the Woz also attended back in the day :)
What a nice man...
One look at Ed and you know he's got an Urban Dictionary Gold™ account.
