  • Brian Henson is not only chairman of the board at The Jim Henson Company, he's cofounder and chairman of the company Dopl, which creates next-level 3D-printed miniatures of people and pets. How is it different from other personalized figurine manufacturers? To show him just that, Brian and Dopl cofounder and CEO Michael Anderson take Adam behind the scenes of their Brooklyn factory, where Adam works on (and breaks) his own figurine ... and learns just how difficult -- but exciting! -- it is to bring inanimate objects to life (not unlike Brian's OTHER job).

Wow so they’re really charging for the material here more than the labor, that’s honestly so crazy to me. There were a lot of people working there and it MUST take more work to do a batch of 24 4” figures than 6 14” figures. The model was used as part of the shop display (featuring other customers, too, not just me), and after a few months we were invited to come and collect our model. Some time before that, I read an article on how to make a 3D photo booth for your 3D printer. I think it used the then-popular game controller as a 3D scanner, with the subject standing on a turntable.
The one I used was photometric _only_ as far as I could tell. It didn't have anything that appeared to be a 3D scanner, and I think it was a bit early to have time-of-flight detectors that looked like regular camera lenses. It had several cameras at different heights on a mast, and revolved that around the subject.

Amazing. Easily the most unique, most original, most elevated “modern art” I’ve seen. Truly remarkable accuracy and detail, and a wonderful naturalistic appearance that avoids the canny valley effect. And reasonably priced as well. More scanning locations Dopl! P.S. When can I start collecting my own Adam Savage action figure set?

The idea of being able to show your children the various stages of their growth (yearly or so) is a very very cool idea. Their fades, phases, hairstyles, and so on. Things like height can be very hard to represent in photos, as they are taken at different distances, etc. SO COOL!

We did this without local company here in Germany about 7 years ago and it's quite amazing to see how my family has changed when looking at them. My parents wanted to have the entire family for our shelf so seeing them all together is surreal and yet amazing to see. Heck just looking at how I portrayed myself back then to now is crazy to see. I'd wanna do this again some day to compare

Sold. I'm in the UK and we have not got the equivalent here.
One interesting point is how they naturally stand on their feet, they are hollow models but I guess its not enough of a difference to alter the center of mass significantly. I bet if you do a really strange pose they need to weight the model to make it stand.

    • @drdca8263

@@drdca8263 two observations. Firstly you can see they are hollow when Adams toe breaks off. Secondly, they blow air into the holes in the foot and dust can be seen existing the hole in the other foot. So I assume they are hollow.

Oh wow!!! There was a booth that came to Emerald City Comic Con that had one of the revolving scanner types. I was wearing an unflattering Tron costume, but knew it would make for a hilarious keepsake to get that 3D scanned. I was planning on coming back the next day with my Planet of the Apes costume, but never got around to it. But I'm super happy I did the Tron one, cause it's sooo funny, and what better memory to capture than something that was totally on a whim. And yeah, the detail caught where the zipper was broken, also caught the change in colour where my boxers stopped and skin tone started. I've always wanted to do it again, but I've not seen them at another ECCC(I imagine traveling versions of this are super hard to upkeep!)

Fun Fact: the french cartoonist Franquin, who did the comic Spirou in the 50s and 60s, once made a story about when Spirou's friend Fantasio encounters a photography store where he gets a miniature copy of himself made in a very similar way. And this cartoon was made in the 50s!!! When I first read that cartoon in the 80s I thought it was too far out to ever happen for real, but here we are now...

I remember the previous company to do this, but sounds like Mr. Henson was right in getting involved. I've been working on a full color resin printer that can do the resolution and better color off and on for a few years mostly because I do want the accuracy of resin but I can't always nail a perfect paint job like the vision in your head. I suspect a really clean software program that can do the cleanup in an automated way would be the next step, as all the ones I've used leave a lot off the table and you can easily dump two days doing it by hand.
