I got one of those done, at a similar scale, in 2015 at the local (Dallas) ComiCon/Fan Expo, wearing my Starfleet uniform. Some time before that, I read an article on how to make a 3D photo booth for your 3D printer. I think it used the then-popular game controller as a 3D scanner, with the subject standing on a turntable. The one I used was photometric _only_ as far as I could tell. It didn't have anything that appeared to be a 3D scanner, and I think it was a bit early to have time-of-flight detectors that looked like regular camera lenses. It had several cameras at different heights on a mast, and revolved that around the subject.
We did this without local company here in Germany about 7 years ago and it's quite amazing to see how my family has changed when looking at them. The idea of being able to show your children the various stages of their growth (yearly or so) is a very very cool idea. Their fades, phases, hairstyles, and so on. Things like height can be very hard to represent in photos, as they are taken at different distances, etc. SO COOL!
Next up Adam as ... a Ghostbuster ... a Medieval Knight ... King George ... Mando ... and or basically any costume has has made that has a removable helmet or is open faced ... sooooo cool
These look so cool. I sincerely hope they are able to expand internationally (UK please!!!) I'd love to Dopl my family starting with the oldest! imagine having a Dopl of your dad and you at the same age! that would be amazing!
@@Mattened They aren't talking about the camera, they are talking about the printer. Most people are used to thinking about filament 3d printers that can't do that many colours at once, or resin 3d printers that only do one colour. And to be fair, before this video I didn't know about this type of printing either.
Those color powder printers are actually pretty old tech. I have a friend that was making similar prints back when he was in art school 15 years ago. They aren't cheap though and it is definitely an involved process.
Great detail and lifelike appearance in all of these, the company display of what can do is also amazing, also the fact that Adam even in the "Clark Kent civilian" clothing pose used a Indiana Jones type shirt tell you that his love for this stuff...never...ever sleep!!!😄😄😄

Oh wow!!! There was a booth that came to Emerald City Comic Con that had one of the revolving scanner types. I was wearing an unflattering Tron costume, but knew it would make for a hilarious keepsake to get that 3D scanned. I was planning on coming back the next day with my Planet of the Apes costume, but never got around to it. But I'm super happy I did the Tron one, cause it's sooo funny, and what better memory to capture than something that was totally on a whim. And yeah, the detail caught where the zipper was broken, also caught the change in colour where my boxers stopped and skin tone started. I've always wanted to do it again, but I've not seen them at another ECCC(I imagine traveling versions of this are super hard to upkeep!)
While the white dot on the eyes is a nice touch, it would help if it was on the same place in both eyes, not in seemingly random places like in some of those models. Also, the same effect could probably be achieved by actually "glazing" each eye with a drop of clear epoxy resin, but I guess they don't want to wait for resin to dry.
Fun Fact: the french cartoonist Franquin, who did the comic Spirou in the 50s and 60s, once made a story about when Spirou's friend Fantasio encounters a photography store where he gets a miniature copy of himself made in a very similar way. And this cartoon was made in the 50s!!! When I first read that cartoon in the 80s I thought it was too far out to ever happen for real, but here we are now...
Very cool! I had something similar done with my son and I many years ago. It's amazing to see how the tech has improved. I'll be in DC next summer so you can bet I'm booking an appointment. Thanks for sharing this!
This should totally become the new trend. Everybody needs their own Dopl just like everybody needed their own Tamagotchi, scanning centers opening up in cities across the country to fulfill the demand. Like real life 3D Snapchat bitmojis or something.
Sold. I'm in the UK and we have not got the equivalent here. One interesting point is how they naturally stand on their feet, they are hollow models but I guess its not enough of a difference to alter the center of mass significantly. I bet if you do a really strange pose they need to weight the model to make it stand.
@@drdca8263 two observations. Firstly you can see they are hollow when Adams toe breaks off. Secondly, they blow air into the holes in the foot and dust can be seen existing the hole in the other foot. So I assume they are hollow.
oh my god, I run a product development shop just a few doors down from the Brooklyn shop. ant believe Brian and Adam were right here shooting this recently.
I am from the UK and really wish we had something like this here, but as far as I am aware, this stuff does not exist here (and if it does, it would be extremely expensive). The closest I can think of is those 3D laser-cubes where they take any photograph of you, make it 3D and then burn that into a CUBE making a cool 3D Sculpture inside the cube, but these cost a lot and as cool as they are, they are not as cool as this (yet cost way more than this). This is one of those things wear I wish you could scan yourself in using Lidar/ToF or something on a phone, send it to them and they do thew rest, allowing anyone across the globe to get a chance.
I remember seeing a rig of Raspberry Pis doing this process a while ago. A firm doing it in Europe I believe, and they had open sourced the designs. Always fascinated by that process.
There are actually some tricks you can use to improve the photogrammetry (creation of the model) even when the clothes are a uniform colour, but I guess that would add complexity to their "scanner". Basically what you do is use a laser to project a grid (or, ideally, a couple of different grids) onto the person or object being scanned, and instead of one photo, you take two or three photos from each camera (a plain one, and then extra photos with the grids projected from multiple directions). You use the grids to figure out the surface orientation of low-detail areas (i.e., the 3D shape those tricky all-white or all-black parts), and you use the plain photo to determine the model's colours. Of course, taking 3 photos (even at very high shutter speeds) means things might move very slightly between them, so it does make some "action poses" harder to capture, but that would be a very small minority of the models people ask them to make.
Project multiple grids at once using a couple of wavelengths of IR, use multiple cameras per viewpoint with bandpass filters, no movement issues there, the fact the cameras are not exactly in the same spot is fairly easy to correct for in the software. For bonus points, use polarized light in a couple of orientations so you get better information about reflectivity.
@@MikrySoft - That would imply higher costs, though (since it would double or triple the number of cameras), and it seems that cost is one of their main concerns. A couple of laser grid projectors would be very cheap, and that's already a solution used in 3D scanning (though generally for inanimate objects, where movement isn't an issue).
I know someone that takes their powder bed printer to conventions and does 3d prints of cosplayers, he makes good money doing it, and the cosplayers are always thrilled with the results.

One of the best replicas I've seen! I totally would get one! The problem would be finding a location. I'm sure you can't just send a photo or two into the company and get a decent result. So impressive! We need to see more of this! Is there a website? Just curious.

That is truly amazing, thanks for showing us how it was made....another great one Adam....Peace and Love to everyone
Adam: "I'm going to come back for more" Could totally see adam getting scanned in every new cosplay he does!
as in the bear and leo combo
We got one of these for about 5 years now where I work. Not this company but a competitor. Never knew it was a bigger thing.
The idea of being able to show your children the various stages of their growth (yearly or so) is a very very cool idea. Their fades, phases, hairstyles, and so on. Things like height can be very hard to represent in photos, as they are taken at different distances, etc. SO COOL!
It’s always fun seeing something new and innovative through your eyes. You always ask the right questions and get to the core or essence of a subject.
For a second there, I thought it was John Entwistle !! 😁
Absolutely amazing. What a splendid use of this technology. This should be franchised to bring it to every major city across the US!
It's crazy that it prints in all the colors. I thought they actually had to paint the model after it gets printed.
They're DSLR cameras that of course capture color :)
They aren't cheap though and it is definitely an involved process.
me too I was amazed to find out its a color replica, well done stuff. I also had not heard of powder deposition printing before either.
If there’s a single thing I would want you to get Jamie to join you for, this would be it.
Great detail and lifelike appearance in all of these, the company display of what can do is also amazing, also the fact that Adam even in the "Clark Kent civilian" clothing pose used a Indiana Jones type shirt tell you that his love for this stuff...never...ever sleep!!!😄😄😄
This is seriously so damn cool! Love how many different types of printing are out there
That's That's the coolest thing I have ever seen!!! I'm definitely going to LA to check that place out.
What a delight. Lovely application of technology!
I want to know which one Mrs. Don't Try That likes best. I bet it might be the one in the white linen shirt. This just looks like so much fun and a wonderful way to capture some amazing memories.
Oh wow!!! They look absolutely amazing!!! Just looked at the website...the prices are a lot cheaper than I thought for such a premium product!!
Wonderful to see my old boss Brian looking so well!!
Super cool. All Adam has to do is make a mold of his Dopl, create a copy and give them away to us! 300 visitor and so on........
Most of us would love to have one on our desk. Adam inspires us non Film folk to innovate and create!
Ok. Top 5 most awesome product I’ve ever seen!
wow! This episode was incredible! I'd love to see more episodes showing off tech and companies like this!
Honey I shrunk the kids. Now can be the best dad joke on Father’s Day.
Where can I buy this little Adam? 😊
It is not for sale, unfotunately!
@@tested😢
@@tested 😭
When can we buy this?
Imagine having a little Adam Savage sitting on your shoulder...
Very cool! I had something similar done with my son and I many years ago. It's amazing to see how the tech has improved. I'll be in DC next summer so you can bet I'm booking an appointment. Thanks for sharing this!
DOPL was at Zenkaikon in Lancaster, PA a couple of years ago. It's very neat technical work. One of these days, I will get one made of me.
This should totally become the new trend. Everybody needs their own Dopl just like everybody needed their own Tamagotchi, scanning centers opening up in cities across the country to fulfill the demand. Like real life 3D Snapchat bitmojis or something.
Just saw the dopl website. The prices are very reasonable and the quality and accuracy is outrageous. Everyone should get this done.
It's the new Sears Family Picture Studio! This is super cool!!!!
Sold. I'm in the UK and we have not got the equivalent here.
One interesting point is how they naturally stand on their feet, they are hollow models but I guess its not enough of a difference to alter the center of mass significantly. I bet if you do a really strange pose they need to weight the model to make it stand.
Are they hollow? I assumed that they had that powder on the inside as well.
@@drdca8263 two observations. Firstly you can see they are hollow when Adams toe breaks off. Secondly, they blow air into the holes in the foot and dust can be seen existing the hole in the other foot. So I assume they are hollow.
@@wol377 thanks!
Of all the 3D printing tech, why does this one excite me the most?
oh my god, I run a product development shop just a few doors down from the Brooklyn shop. ant believe Brian and Adam were right here shooting this recently.
Yep, in early June!
@@testedlanet olası makina hakkıda bilgi verecek misiniz artık?
Man!! This place looks amazing! So original... I gotta get my ass to NY and snag me a print of my poochie... Thanks for showcasing this. 💗
Fun watching Adam play with himself
Time for onlyfans?
🧐
Oh lord... Out of context, that sounds very naughty.🤣
@@9Tailsfan "Adam Savage Tested" 🤭🤭🤭
I would've loved to see Adam scanned as Indiana Jones
Damn those are so cool, I wish we had something like that in Australia. Absolutely love them.
C'est vraiment génial, j'adore ! J'aurais aimé avoir un scanner comme ça, ici à Paris. Merci pour ce partage.
I know someone that takes their powder bed printer to conventions and does 3d prints of cosplayers, he makes good money doing it, and the cosplayers are always thrilled with the results.
Hey Adam, I love watching and listening to you. It's always interesting. I have a 3d printer and use it occasionally. One thing I would like to do is try lost PLA casting. I think that'd be amazing.
This is so cool! I may have to run down to L.A. and do one, a couple hundred bucks doesn't seem too bad.
My daughter and I got our Dopl done 2 weeks ago at the NY location! It’s an amazing process, I cannot wait to see the finished product! (It ships to you in about 6-8 weeks)
Having opened a brick and mortar 3D portrait studio over 6 years ago I'm happy to see it working out even if it didn't when we tried. The tech wasn't quite there fully. I know this setup intimately. We called them minis. I like dopl. I think we even considered that term at one or two points.
Why am I expecting these figurines to move every second? It's uncanny.. wow
I wish they'd setup a mobile scan near me.. I'd love to have a few of these!!! Epic!! 😄🤘🏼🇺🇲
One of the best replicas I've seen! I totally would get one! The problem would be finding a location. I'm sure you can't just send a photo or two into the company and get a decent result. So impressive! We need to see more of this! Is there a website? Just curious.
