I still think the ‘Johnny Winter And’ album has some of the best guitar work done by 2 guitarist ever. Rick and Johnny were magic together on that record.

I had the chace to sit and talk with Rick after his show when he played at the Boat House in San Francisco. Such a great guy. So friendly . . . . . . I have no idea what made me do it, but at one time in our brief interlude I asked him "Got time for a joke ? ?" to which he replied "Give it to me". I told him the joke and the 5 or so people who'd played with him busted out in roaring laughter and he said " you have nothing to worry about if you have material like that to back up your playing". I had brought my 62 Strat for him to play or sign and he said "give me that guitar" and he signed it. Thanks Rick ! !

This is the first time I've ever heard Rick speak. What a warm, personable, and intelligent guy. His stories are amazing. He's had so much experience and learned so much. I could listen to him talk about guitars all day. He's got so much wisdom. He's played with all the greats and yet he is so humble, candid, and down to earth. God bless you Rick for all the people you have influenced. I just recently found "Guitars and Women" (a Japanese CD through Amazon). So great to be listening to that in my car while I'm driving. He's written so many songs that are truly from the heart.

I became a big fan when I first saw him kick Led Zep's ass at their last American Performance at Oakland Coliseum back in late 70's, later saw him about 7 times after as his career peaked and then went a bit south as the 80's brought in a different style. Rick is a phenomenal guitarist & a one of a king. he was certainly at the top of the list in the 70's & before Eddie Van Halen emerged on the scene. I'll never forget seeing him in downtown San Francisco at this smaller venue bar & he came out onto my table & was jamming right in front of me, WOW. - - - between him & Elvin Bishop inspiring me, I've been wireless since,

Great interview. Such a genuine person. Amazing life stories!
It's funny he mentioned first producing Weird Al. I met Al in Hawaii, and a "Slack-key" guitar player I had already met, Jim West, mentioned he was also the touring lead guitarist for "Weird Al", so I just offhandedly hit wikipedia on "Weird Al" one afternoon. YOU would never guess the record sales numbers. Talk about a feather in his producer's cap! Look for yourselves... I mean like CRAZY super star numbers. I would not have guessed in a million years!

In the 90s I was stunned that Rick was going to play a concert at my old high school.
It was the Greater Lowell Vocational School...!
It was one of the happiest and best events of my life (after the birth of my children)
I got to meet him back stage, got pics and signatures... only to find out my now ex-wife never set the film properly in the camera, after giving me a bunch of shit because I kept asking "Are you sure? Can you check?" repeatedly...
So... never got the the pics I thought I was taking...
I was SO incredibly upset... Rick is one of my guitar heroes, and has been since I was about 7/8 years old...
That show was absolutely incredible... and even though I didnt get the pics (esp the ones of meeting him) I have the memories to carry the rest of my life... and that works fine.
He was so cool because I was in my 20s and when I met him I turned into a complete geeky 7/8yo kid :D

Good interview.. at 19:29, Rick mentions one of the audience members was in Every Mothers Son who recorded "Come on Down to my Boat, Baby" a one hit wonder in '67, my dentist in the Woodstock N.Y. area was also in that band.. I also saw Rick Derringer play in the same town in '93 , after the show, I had a chance to ask him to autograph my vinyl copy of "All American Boy" which he was more than happy to do.. , one gracious and talented cat !

It's funny, sometimes the guitars you think are worth the least turn out to be the ones that are worth the most. Like Rick said, you just never know what you have. I just started playing about 4 months ago. What ever guitar I've purchased, I made it a point to get the best one I could afford (even if it was a stretch). You always hope that maybe one of the guitars you get will be worth something someday. I'm 62 and I'm not really thinking about that too much. My goal is to work as hard as I can at it, and I hope to accomplish something over time. The pleasure I get from playing is worth every penny I've spent. I remember 10 or 20 years ago really wanting a guitar but saying to myself "You're too old to start now." So here I am at 62 with seven new guitars. As a teenager my friends all had guitars and I used to sit there watching. I guess I'm trying to make up for lost time. I have friends my age who say "Do you really need seven guitars at your age?" All I can say is, I get so much enjoyment out of playing each and every one of them, I really don't care what they think. At a certain point you ask yourself "Whose life am I living? My life or someone else's version of it?" I try to rotate through each one playing scales and what have you. It just goes to show it's never too late.

Rick has had such an incredible career - and played or worked with almost everyone!
There's a video on TH-cam of Rick playing 'Cat Scratch Fever' with Ted Nugent in an 1970's concert.
Then, there's another video of Rick playing a concert with Todd Rundgren in the early 1980's.
    Talk about variety!

Great interview with the essential, all time great gutiarist Rick Derringer.
Its clear to me that Rick possess a knack for telling a good story. Can you imagine going in a bar back in the day to find Dicky Betts playing guitar with "a band called the Jokers" or as a young man being in a band as a coguitarist with Johnny Winter? I mean that takes some chops and a whole lot of self confidence right there. When the interview wrapped up and the video ended I thought to myself; what a geninue, humble, and yet straightforward guy, the world could use more people like Rick Derringer...

What a great guy. I've seen Rick's comments on a few of his own postings. He doesn't have his nose in the air & yes, totally grateful & humble. The fact that he's an unapologetic Christian makes him that much more admirable. Imo, anytime a person is willing to stand up for their beliefs you have my respect as you become a target for people to attack. Not really back then, but for sure in today's toxic environment. I've always heard Rick was from Indiana. Now I know it was union city in the eastern part of the state near Richmond. Anyways, thanks for all the great music & may God continue to bless you Mr. Derringer.

What a great story teller! Rick's 'All American Boy' album was at the top of the charts during my rebellious schoolboy days. He's one of the select few who recorded with Steely Dan. Donald & Walter were perfectionists who only sought out the most talented musicians to work with them and it showed. It warmed my heart to hear Rick acknowledge being a Christian and explaining how being considered a star during this lifetime is nothing compared to being a star for eternity.

Mister rick derek you're such a great guy. I remember when I was in the first grade. And I had an Uncle that was coming out of Vietnam.. War and he was a heck of a guitar player, and he came to my mom's house to stay with us for a couple of weeks.
While he got resettled in North Carolina. Work he was pretty darn good guitar player within his own right And he got me interested in playing, so he started teaching me a lot of things. And one of the first songs he taught told me was hang Own sloppy . The Sacketts song was Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash and then of course came House of the Rising Sun I was like five or six years old. But then later got to watch Rick Derringer Johnny and Eddie Band When I was a teenager which was super super cool. But then something amazing happened I moved Orlando Florida in 1981 long story short I started getting together with plenty of musicians and I had just gotten out of a marriage so I wanted to do something to cover up some of my time so I started playing in the clubs again about myself a couple of nice guitars to play out with an amplifier equipment. But there is a little store called The Guitar Factory in Orlando Florida and they always would check replace all my strings and check the intonation On My Guitar every Saturday morning so I can play out on the weekend and I went there on a bout a Wednesday I was having a new nut put on my Les Paul and they were finishing it up and I hear in the back I hear somebody playing guitar it's Loki but they're killing it well over the years I became really really good friends with the people that own this business so I asked one of the owners who was that in the back playing the guitar hey starts looking at me and laughing he said you really don't know who that is I said he looks very very very familiar but I can't put my finger on it so the guy walks out to the front of the store where the Working On My Guitar I'm looking at the tattoos on this guy's forearms a flames so I turned around and I asked my buddy at the shop who the hell was this guy that's when he proceeded to tell me that was Rick Derringer talk about having that headlight in the eye look I was befuddled, so I asked mr. Derringer if he wouldn't mind if he would make the time to sign the headstock of my Les Paul in which he smiled and said I would be honored at the time he was testing a PRS guitar and they were trying to set it up for him cuz they were going to make it a signature guitar but it must not have worked out cuz they just could not get the action on the guitar right but anyhow after they did an adjustment on the guitar with him one time he asked me after he had signed my guitar if I could go in the back with him and just lay down Rhythm tracks for Blues so that he can play this PRS so I thought about Stormy Monday and like has been stated throughout all the messages I've seen here Rick Derringer could tell a story. And I had no idea years ago before the Allman Brothers were the Allman Brothers they we're a band called the Almond Joys and Rick Derringer was part of this band okay he's got my attention and then he tells me the story that he was playing a guitar with a slide and that is when Duane Allman showed interest and slide guitar so Rick Derringer started teaching him slide guitar again thank you Rick Derringer for signing my Les Paul I always sign it is going to my daughter I'm 70 years old now but nothing but respect brother

I remember watching Rick at our local state fair in the 90's.He opened up for the Edgar Winter group, and at the very end, they jammed out together. The best part of it was that it was a free concert, and i was at the very front,as it was first come gets the better seats. That concert was so memorable for me because i was watchin two living rock legends live.

Gotta make a living,of course, but Rick D plays for the love of it and the love of his peers and fans.
The word that comes to mind especially with opening story story is kismet.
Great interview and interviewer. How can one not be enamored by this legend who's just a regular guy with some great stories. I love his stories about how supportive his parents were, too.
I grew up in the 60's, yet too young at the time to really understand what I was listening to and this is really helpful this is a great interview. Good humour, too. I'd love to sit at the feet of this guy and listen to him every one of his stories.

Man what a life he must have led. It's as if he dreamed the impossible dream. And it seems as being raised in a midwestern environment with a good working class household hes actually found his next phase. The older I get sometimes the harder it is to recall dates, names, places, etc. But hes is giving it the old college try. Hes not afraid to fail. In one form or the other hes always walked his life in faith an not fear. An amazing person. Yep RD truly a blessed individual.

Wow! Moving; emotional; the history, both Rock & Roll and human, exhilarating and telling about this inspirational American. The decency of this guy Rick Derringer... I'm at a loss for words. I feel honored to have seen him perform at a place called "My Father's Place" in Roslyn, New York on two occasions. Don't ask me the year because it is lost in the haze of Rock & Roll Legends.

Absolutely love Rick Derringer. Saw him at a Day on the Green concert in Oakland in '77. Judist Priest, Rick Derringer, and Led Zepplin. In my opinion..Rick and Danny Johnson stole the show. Privileged to witness that.

I shouldn't Rick Darren jerk back in 7273. When He was singing rock and roll hoochie coo. At the time, he came out on stage with 12 inch platforms on and danced and sang across the stage back-and-forth the whole time and never fell down. I thought it was a total achievement that he didn't fall. He performed very well. I really enjoyed him and I've enjoyed him ever since. Thank you rick deranger
