Chris - this is an excellent video. You absolutely nailed the details on this. I have owned 12+ Firebirds over the years. I currently have two '63s (VII and V, the latter formerly owned by The Hives) and two '64s (a I and a III). They're all wildly different in character. I've played them all live... though probably never again for the VII - it's too valuable (and clean). It's also arguably the best sounding of the brood. I also have a '71 Deluxe that I've owned for 15+ years, and a '54 LP Custom I acquired late last year. (Again, gigged with those a lot and love them, but the '71 is my baby). It was a delight to hear you compare the LPD, LP GT, and the FB III. The ceramic on the LPD is so obvious to my ears - the extra squish in the notes. The AlNiCo on the FB sounds bright and punches. And, well, the PAFs on the GT - what can be said that hasn't already been said? You rock. Subbed.
Damnit, that was the meanest tone I've EVER heard! Followed by the sweetest tone I've EVER heard! Now I have to buy the 16th guitar I can't afford. Now I have to eat on the soup line after I buy one!

Great post 👌I have a 2016 firebird standard at first I didn’t like it the PUs we’re very bright but now am I love with it 👌👌Chris your playing is off the charts good in fact it’s just brilliant 10(10 👌👌
Chris, I had a 60s sunburst reverse Firebird V in the 80s. Thought I would never play this again and foolishly sold it for an embarrassingly low price. Think about it everyday. Your amazing playing continues to inspire me, thank you!
Welcome to Bird-land sir. We are happy to have you join us. There is NOTHING like a Firebird. Many many great guitars but Firebirds are unique. Thunderbird basses are a joy too. I continue to look for a VII to go with my V
Firebird is my favorite body shape. I’ve owned 4 in the past and haven’t connected with any of them :( surprisingly, the newer epiphone firebirds are absolutely Ace!
I remember falling in love with the idea of a tele and then playing one and going "Oh. I don't like it AT ALL. Huh." Granted, I'm a lefty, and I didn't have a lot of options to choose from, but it was something about how far forward the bridge was that just didn't work for me. Funny how we love the look of a guitar but if it doesn't feel right, it just doesn't matter. I would LOVE a Firebird or an Explorer, but I just won't ever find a lefty one, so they'll just live in my head I guess
Very sweet playing on your first "Jam" section, that out-of-phase tone is crazy good. Toss some drive on top of that and it will be spellbinding. Thanks for your great videos, I do look forward to Fridays brother.
I don’t know whether or not you used your own gear, but I never heard you with such a beautiful sound before. Loved everything about it, including the out of phase sound of the middle position!!! ❤❤❤
I used to have one. I loved its unique sound and leftward placement of the strings. There was some neck dive, but the waist is in just the right place to rest your right forearm on it and add enough pressure to keep its beak up.
I recently took a chance on the new IBG Epiphone Firebird and had a Duncan Antiquity proper Firebird pickup installed. I was absolutely floored by the amount of brightness. Rolling back the tone knob is a must.
Great comparison between the tone of the FB and the two LP types, done systematically and with a clean sound - very welcome, most guitar "comparisons" are pretty well hopeless, particularly when a ton of gain is applied!
The Firebird is the most underrated guitar. The 60’s versions are very rare and expensive but you can still find 76 Bicentennial model. It’s still expensive but obtainable. If you find one buy it. They are jumping in value very quickly now.
Hi Chris, you made smile when you mentioned John Otway and Wild Willy Barret,. When I was in a band in the 80's we had the honour of supporting them at the Tunnel Club in Greenwich! I met you in a corridor after you supported the great Peter Frampton at the RAH. Cardinal Black were amazing that night and you were a diamond geezer when we met, despite obviously being busy. Hopefully catch you on tour. All the very best to you and the band, Charlie 👍.
Thank you Charlie, lovely to have met you. Apologies if I was a little rushed when I bumped into you in the corridor in the R.A.H; I was on my way to find my parents who watched from one of the boxes. My old man was very ill and passed a few months later so that gig will forever hold a special place for me - it was the last time he saw me play. Cheers Charlie, I hope you're well.
Another very watchable video. Cheers Chris. I went into Bridgend music store on Saturday with 3 guitars and came out with a tokai fb65. Totally unexpected but when I picked it off the peg it just felt right. I think it's the first guitar I feel completely comfortable playing. Sounds great plays lovely.
Great stuff as always Chris !! For me the neck pickup on a Firebird is one the best tones of any guitar ever made ! The single pickup version should have a neck only instead of the bridge pickup which is on the Clapton FB for example!
I love these episode when Chris discovers a new guitar, love the intros and playing. That said, I feel Chris could play a potato and make it sound good. Thank You for the content Sir.
Love the little quote of Peter Green's intro to "Need Your Love So Bad" at around 5:33 after you switched to out of phase in the middle position! Also, those bass string overbends in the first jam were incredible -- such a rich sound, and SO hard to control...kind of like a cross between Otis Rush and Jerry Donahue. Amazing stuff!
I love the Firebird, but i think the non reverse takes the cake for me. A non reverse Firebird III is up there as one of my faves, next to the ES-330/335 and the Jazzmaster and Jaguar. Plus, those pickups sound incredible. Just so sweet.
Thank you for your videos, there seems to be less and less decent content on TH-cam, this brightens up my day! Any recommendations for other decent content people?
So weird, I have been hankering for a Firebird, thanks in most part, to Uncle Larry himself and as soon as I offload a guitar or two I plan on getting a Firebird soon as possible! And yes, wearing the same shirt is very important in a comparison video,,good on you for being scientific! All were great sounding guitars in your hands but the Firebird has something special! Thanks Chris!
A Firebird V was my stage guitar in the 90s. They make you play on the edge. The cutting tone, the neck position, and the visual statement don’t allow for a timid approach. In the end I moved on and made the hard decision to sell it because I wanted my playing to change and develop in different directions. I should regret parting with it as it was a great guitar to play and would be worth a lot more now than any other guitar I own, or have owned, but I was right in my instinct. Left a lot of good memories though.
The Firebird definitely fits your style. There’s so much to love about the guitar. I owned a Firebird III, which was great. Loved the mini humbuckers, the neck, the headstock and tuners, the sustain, but the offset of the body just wasn’t comfortable.
Great video! Firebirds are IMO the best of both worlds. I seen Johnny Winter in a little club when I was 15, and wanted a Firebird BAD after that. My beautiful wife bought me one for my 40th birthday and it’s been my #1 ever since.
I love Firebirds to look at, I mean, just look at it 😍. However, I don’t get on with them from an ergonomic/playability standpoint, they’re just ‘wrong’, nothing is where I expect it to be. Doesn’t stop with wanting one though, more precisely, a white one, Johnny Winter style.
I love the firebird sound. The long body make me feel like I'm reaching out WAY to my left, though. Never been a 3 pickup fan when it has a 3 position switch. Worst example of that is a Rickenbacker 370. You actually get less sounds than with the 2 pickup model. But a 3 position switch shouldn't have more than 2 pickups.
Ever since seeing Phil X play an Ember Red Firebird iii for fretted Americana, I always wanted one and thought they were rad. I've gone through eight (Gibson and Epiphone), and still have 2. They really are a love hate relationship. The thing is so rad and unique and I freaking love it, but they play so differently, and I just can't put down my Schecter S style guitars, So the birds rarely get love. Absolutely kick ass playing and sounds 🤘
Nice to see the Firebird and Mini pickup schematics for people to learn. But not mentioned here there are the more recent Gibson Jim DeCola designed hot dual rail minis that look like Firebird pickups with a smooth cover, but have two non magnetized steel rails with one bar magnet under like the regular mini. Found in various Firebird, SG and LP models from 2012 up. I have the Alnico 5 (15015) (neck 14k, bridge 26k) and Ceramic (495/17058) bar magnet versions but also there's an Alnico 2 version (2012 70s Tribute). Sound sort of Firebird, sort of Tele, but with more bottom end. Guitar forums seem to hate them as too hot and shrill compared to the actual Firebird pups they resemble. But these DeCola Minis are easily my favourite GIbson pickups for moderate gain.
Another famous player... well kind of... Rowland S Howard. Started out on an Ibanez copy with a bolt-on neck before he got his iconic white Jaguar. Not a Gibson, but RSH is always worth a mention.
Interesting choice using what sounds like an octave pedal on that opening solo. Firebird sounds tremendous and those Firebird pickups are a great alternative to P-90s *just found out like someone below that those are indeed Firebird pick-ups and not mini humbuckers
Jesus wept! That opening solo🔥🔥

Sorry I have to say you play so Tasty, each note is just a feeling your body feel’s Loved the sound of the Fire Bird❤ Alisa🌺
I peed maself by the end of the opening solo, thank you very much...
Knocked the E string right off the bridge of that Firehawk in the exit jam 🤘
That tune you’re doing from 4.32 onwards on the ‘65 Firebird III sounds so much like the Thirteen Moons circa 1987. It’s fab.
Great video! Firebirds are IMO the best of both worlds. I seen Johnny Winter in a little club when I was 15, and wanted a Firebird BAD after that. My beautiful wife bought me one for my 40th birthday and it’s been my #1 ever since.
Bucking Good Show!!!
I've got an inspired by Gibson Epiphone Firebird.its bloody petfect.
I have a firebird inspired revolts Mondata. I noticed the pickups were microphonic and didn't realize that is a feature of many firebird pickups
The 3 way should be between neck and bridge with an extra separate volume control to blend in the middle.
The jumper line got me 🤣
I have an Epiphone FB, the 'inspired by Gibson' thing. Reverse headstock. The pick-ups are phenomenal, I love that guitar 😍
Thanks for the Firebird love!
Firebird sounds tremendous and those Firebird pickups are a great alternative to P-90s
*just found out like someone below that those are indeed Firebird pick-ups and not mini humbuckers
Most be in the fingers...you make all guitar sound Great...😮
Out-of-phase position: Immediately plays Peter Green ❤❤
Its not the guitar, its you, my well-spoken Welshman.
My favorite guitar
