WH40K: ROGUE TRADER - GUIDE TO CHARACTER SHEET & PROGRESSION (Beginner's Guide)

- Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader from Owlcat Games is an excellent CRPG adaptation of the tabletop RPG with the same name - that means it comes with a complex set of rules and systems that are intertwined in ways best explained by a 400 page rulebook, or perhaps this beginner's guide video. In today's guide video, we're going to take a look at some tips and tricks and key considerations when it comes to character creation, and I'll do so with a walkthrough of character sheets and the progression system in the game. Hopefully this guide will not only answer questions about how dodge works, how hit chances are calculated, and why you might want to pick certain upgrades, but it'll help you make better decisions during character creation as well.

I've played Warhammer 40K Tabletop RPGs for over a decade. I've wanted an adaptation like this to happen for so SO long. I'm so very happy this exists, and I'm so glad to be able to prepare guides - big thanks to the devs for the early access keys. I have another guide video just about ready for release tomorrow, and I'm happy to answer any questions in the comments, or take on any recommendations for additional topics that need clarity! Enjoy!
You have done a great job covering WH40K games all these years!
What about difficulty? What do you suggest for veterans CRPGs players but without knowledge of 40k system?
@@jpbaiano1 If you're a veteran of the genre, I think you can ramp it up! It will definitely get challenging further along, but it mainly boils down to action economy and keeping an eye on how abilities stack nicely together.
100%, my favourite TT all time, been wanting this game forever.
Justice for planet zoo let’s play 😢😅
Would absolutely love to see some Character Creation Builds that you've come up with that would be good for beginners and intermediates. Great video as always!
I've been so excited for this game!
I commend your clarity and brevity! It's a pleasure to watch and listen to somebody smart enough to cut it short, keep focus and explain facts. (I only wish most other streamers would be half as competent and intelligent as you - but that's just wishful thinking and it's better to accept "it is what it is".) Thanks for good streams /again/ and for giving hope /in a world half filled with stupidity/. :)
Extremely well explained. I used to play rogue trader ages ago (not so young anymore) so it's nice to get a refresher
Thank you for this, it did help me understand the mechanics of this game
Thanks, like I try to read as much as able and figure it out yet sometimes hearing another break is great. Can wait until have it totally filled in my head and get to have better fun tweaking builds.
Great video! Very detailed and easy to digest. Much appreciated!
Yo PartyElite I think your channel is the best. The way you break stuff down and explain game mechanics makes games I would never have tried seem fun and accessible to me. Your play throughs are always a good time too. Hope you never stop making videos and hope you always have fun making them man.
Really appreciate the kind words - glad to hear you're enjoying the channel :)
Watched a few guides around the net now and this is the only that bothered to explain the actual fundamentals of the game. Thanks.
Excellent videos! One focused on class builds would be extremely welcome.
For me, the hardest part will planning out character talents. There are so many of them, and my team takes all of these into account. These things make me so indecisive.
Amazing guide as always!
Great video man. I’m going to need them lol I’m not good at these games but I really like the 40k world so I’m gonna try and be good enough to have fun at the game lol
I would VERY much love to see a Rogue Trader sword & pistol build. Because if I am going to play a rich swashbuckler on the frontier then I want to do so in style.
Great video, man!
I'm new to Warhammer 40K, but I'm loving It so far thank you for the video. Question are you planning on doing a Lets Play of this like you did for Baldur's Gate 3? I don’t wanna assume and speak with the community, but i’m pretty sure we all would enjoy watching a veteran play through the game I know I would.
I have a question. Does the Fortress World "Never stop shooting" work with melee attacks? I love Owlcats games, but I'm new to Warhammer, so I'm not sure how to build a melee Psyker. I'm pretty much addicted to the Magus class from Pathfinder so I'm trying to make something similar. Your video already helped me a ton, but I'm still stuck on character creation.
excellent breakdown, thank you so much
Are there any talents or other important picks with character creation you think are very useful that might be overlooked at first?
Thanks, this is exactly what I was looking for, the game doesn't do a great job at explaining things. I even ended up restarting the game because I messed up my character's build.
If you choose a Psker, for example Telepath, the talents you will have access to are only from the Telepath talents or could you pick Talents from other Psyker specialties? Thanks in advance :)
Rogue Trader playthrough lets goooo
what is best talent tree for pyscer ?
:D
Finally! A good rpg this year, can’t wait to try it out
Baldur gate was good...... This one is good too
@@melodiasrojas8428 I really didn’t enjoy BG3 though, but from what I’ve seen of this game, looks really good
@@legitplayin6977 i think its going to be the opposite for me. Ill enjoy both but seems like Owlcat games are just far too complex for me too enjoy as much as something like Bg3. Like the sheer amount of talent choices just greatly increases the chances of someone new completely borking their characters. Like i just truly can not be bothered to read tooltips with fairly dense paragraphs and numbers for literally 100+ talents every single level up, for every single character. it is a level of overwhelming I havent experienced in anything else.
I work in elec engineering and trying to solve design problems are literally less overwhelming.
@@MattyBudzzz I mean yeah, I agree that owl cat does sometime go overboard with the complexity, but honestly I like that.
I found BG3 to be quite simple and that made it boring. But it was great for getting a wider audience
Okay, small edit after I got my hands on Rogue Trader: Holy shit, the game is genuinely so good. Probably my goty tbh
@@legitplayin6977 yeah like im not ignorant to the fact that the complexity is literally the main draw of their games for a lot of people, and I can understand why people love it so much. Just for someone so new to that level of complexity it is such an insurmountable thing to get into.
Like Rogue Trader isnt bad, ive heard people say its a lot more forgiving difficulty wise than WotR so thats a huge plus for me, I can continue to just build stuff myself and not worry about optimization bc it ultimately wont make my playthrough miserable or incredibly hard.
I think the sentiment of some MMOs having to be a second job due to how much you need to play those games can transfer to WotR simply because in order to get the msot out of the game you literally need to invest and dedicate as much or more time to learning, reading and researching outside of the game to get a grasp on how the game works and understand how to actual build a class or party correctly, and that just turns me off.
I guess thats why I like BG3 so much more is because its so simple to just jump in, and for me I had no prev DnD knowledge, and just play the game. After my first playthrough I maxed the difficulty and started reading up and investing mroe time into the game bc the core was so fun anyway. And thats what I am hoping rogue trader does for me, and subsequently brings me back to WotR to give it another try.
Im unsure if getting weapon proficency early on in the game is a wise choice. I'm still in the starting system, and it seems like you don't get to just buy say a bolter or power weapon, till later. So should you take some proficiencies thst you plan to use, or maybe save a talent point?
is it possible to dual wield chainswords?
Are you gonna be doing another planet zoo playthrough or a bannerlord playthrough
What surprised me about this game is how unimportant melee damage is early, and how important going first is, especially for melee. The game swamps you with tons of super weak enemies who will friendly fire the absolute hell out of each other, and once your soldiers get their defenses online, they are quite resilient. But every time I get caught flat footed, I get wrecked. There often is not a lot of cover to deploy your troops in at battle start, you often start semi surrounded, and you will have like "ten guys get to act before it's your turn". Then one guy will take half your health off with a single lasgun burst.
I started with a death worlder that was doing like 20 damage per chainword swing and 95% parry chance. I regret everything. He wrecks bosses, but he just doesn't get to start the fight until EVERYONE else has already gone.
Also, what the hell is wrong with commissar? first you have to hit a guy, then he has to not die, then you have to kill that guy, WITH another member of your team, and then the fight still has to not be over? This never happens. And then you get a moderate but by no means good bonus? commisar worst origin. 0/10. Do not pick.
In my opinion commisar requires good initiative as well. So he can target and get the ball rolling asap
Is it a bad idea to have a stat bellow 30, I made a pyromancer warrior from a forge world that only has 25 fellowship. I was planning to get around it with a forge world trait that allows me to use intelligence as a base for persuasion, commerce, and ceorcion rolls. Is this a bad idea, should I have just gotten a 30 in it by sacraficing a 40 in a different stat or will I be fine?
if you have a plan to mitigate the problem then thats fine. if not. probably don't want to go to low. but figure out what you want to be good at and get good at that thing. its more important than avoiding weaknesses. you can plan to cover your weaknesses either with other party members or by playing to your strenghts instead.
Hey PartyElite! I think you are a cool guy. Thanks for the videos! 😎
Hey PartyElite, is there any way to reset your skillpoints etc? Just curious, this game is huuuge and it would be a shame if you couldn't change your build in case you messed up for example.
one of the officers in your ship ca do that, choose the "my team need Training" option
Is this games combat difficult to understand for those who havent played crpgs before?
Would love some build guides from you! I made a Hive World Commisar in order to be persuasive with some combat skills, but I can't really figure out what traits to stack for better survivability
More hp trait. (+ half your level as trait and 10%dodge)
My 40k tabletop experience tells me that it's almost a mistake to not pick psyker background for your character since psykers are so much stronger than everything else in the long run, with so much power and versatility that you get on top of your regular archetype. Is it like that here too?
I've only played dark heresy table top but psykers there had a 10% chance to roll psychic phenomena ( when you roll doubles like 11 22 and so on) EVERYTIME they use psychic powers. If you roll 75 or more, you go to the warp perils table and roll again with much harsher consequences even for low rolls. Is it the same in rogue trader?
your 40k Lore experience is failing you then. being a Psyker is literally the worst. every time you attack you can summon a daemon. and one might just climb into your head and make your body their puppet even if your just existing. or just have your head explode. and those ARE perils of the warp that exist in the game. being A Psyker is like firing an overcharged plasma pistol. does it do big numbers? HELLL YEAH. but preferably you have other people do that so it doesn't literally blow up in your face.
its a mistake to take on that kind of liablity for yourself if you have a choice. you want your power to come from status. not literal hell. and genetic experimentation is hit or miss in this world.
@@Staskasas After buying the game and leveling up to lvl 11 I can say they tried to balance psykers using veil degradation mechanics - basically this is a shared pool that gets depleted every time a psyker uses their ability. Psychic phenomena is a minor effect that is largely ignorable, I think the worst I saw was losing a few wounds from a warp backlash. Perils of the warp can't trigger (hopefully) until veil degradation reaches 15, and this is a manageable characteristic - you have multiple abilities that allow you to restore veil and reduce effect of your powers on it.
BOOM!
Does the game ever give you rebuild opportunities? It really sucks to get halfway through a game and realise you've screwed up the character build but trying to work everything out in advance cold is a lot of work too.
I expect you could muddle through but it doesn't feel good to be unable to take the really cool thing because you made the wrong decision half a game ago.
hi
How newcomer friendly is this game for people who do not know anything about Warhammer 40K?
Fextralife said in their review that the game is very lore accurate, and like other Owlcat games, certain terms, people, places, and events are highlighted in conversations so you can mouse over and get a summary.
There is alot of Lore on youtube like www.youtube.com/@LorewithAttenborough
Honestly, you don't need to know the lore to have a good time, in my humble opinion. There are tooltips for information to fill you in, and even if you don't use those, the game is very clear about what's going on. The one thing you need to keep in mind is that the 40k universe (for humans) tends to be a dogmatic hellscape. The lore is actually quite fascinating, but I'd say let that one note inform your moral compass.
Haha, character 💩
Ok, im gone, i havent sleep for two days.
Are there woke elements in it?
It's fucking warhammer 40 k
