I'm pretty sure it's the selector because it only reacted/behaved when he touched it AND big clue, it didn't use to work back in the day. My money is on the previous owners playing with that thing, got it to work, then it goofed out and here we are. Hopefully it's nothing expensive, that'd suck.
The overpressure bypass valve back to tank might also be going or need adjusting. That would account for the behavior as well. Either way, it's time to open it up and pray to the Machine God.
Nigel's place at Fransham is certainly a cornucopia of interesting machinery and other blacksmithery stuff. Had a pleasant day out going down there to pick up a swage block earlier in the Summer.
Alec, there is one kind of knife I've never seen any knife makers attempt (though I may have just missed it), a Victorinox / Wenger style Swiss army knife! It would fit right in with your series on making production tools or your zippo lighter.
Barker St. was a great shop, leaking roof and doors falling off. I remember watching you do the live demo on an evening. One when your pants ripped open just before going live. Duct tape came in so handy. 🤣🤣 great to see you getting some old kit back 2x👍
Seeing Will's power hammer crashing down was just plain horrible... all that work, all that time, and all that money... :( We all died a little that day.
The only positive note about that incident is that no-one was injured. Well, not *physically* injured, though I suspect there was some emotional damage going on...
I'll admit to watching Will's channel a bit more these days. He has bounced back quite nicely from that moment. Even recently posted a wonderful video on yet ANOTHER power hammer he is starting to restore.

You might want to start researching the hydraulic diagram for that unit and plan on fixing the bad valve. Its acting up and its just a matter of time before it fails out and the unit is down.

Pickup filter for the hydraulic system could be clogged causing the pump to be starved for hydraulic fluid. Had the same issue with a 25 ton hydraulic clicker press causing it to act erratic.

That press is so much better than I ever realized. Had no idea it had so many adjustments and was so controllable. Way better than my 16 ton that’s for sure

You should try leather working again, it would be great to see some more custom sheaths like you did with the bowie knife. And how about a new and improved forge.
