The REAL reason it got canceled is CBS decided to get rid of all its Saturday morning kid shows in 1997, and Al was just on the wrong network at the wrong time.
No, actually it was quite the opposite. They wanted cheap to produce educational filler. At first, they just got a bunch of Canadian produced Nelvana shows, ones that get tax credit so the funding was already secured, leading to cheap programing acquisitions. A year later they said, nope! That's not cheap enough for us, so they just got a bunch of even cheaper Nick Jr reruns (CBS was part of Viacom at the time). There was a very brief period where they at least aired Hey Arnold, but that didn't last long.
For everyone talking about how the effect is done, I think I've figured it out: Part of the blade is arched, and when he holds up the knife, look at where his hand is on the handle, and look at his pointer and middle fingers, they're covering the other half of the arch. After he starts "hacking", his hand slides down to the base of the handle, uncovering that other little part of the blade that is also arched. That looks like how it's done to me anyway.
Love both Weird Al and Octavia Spencer. Also 2020 has been a weird year for Octavia Spencer, first she was a duck, then she was a Manticore and finally she was a witch hunting Grandma.
For everyone who can't figure out how he did that: the knife had a grove in it and the part where the groove ended there was a opening and every time he squeezed the handle hard the fake blood came out of the opening.
lol @ ppl who think it's a fake arm. The knife has a inward arch toward the grip where he is "cutting" his arm. You can see it clearly when he holds the knife up.
Maybe if he did a sitcom filmed in front of a live studio audience. Maybe like those good ones that have an applause at the end of each episode. A primetime sitcom! Perfect!
The Saturday Morning Show was "The Weird Al Show". That was released on dvd just a couple years back. ALTV was what he did on MTV and later VH1 and that's the one that has too many legal issue's to iron out to be properly released on DVD.
@Farvai0 I own the series. It's seriously some of the best sketch stuff available. I'm not sure why it was cancelled. It was brilliant. Probably just not the right time. :/
There is a part of the knife that is kinda rubbery and on the other side of the knife or inside the knife there was a pill that would pop or leak to make it look like blood
RenegadeJuggler It does. Weird Al and CBS were always fighting over the content, especially since back when this aired, CBS redid their Saturday Morning block to be all E/I shows.
@@jeremyriley1238 It was aired at 11:30 a.m. ET Saturdays, as the last show on the lineup. CBS did the program no favors, either, as the network would only promote _The Weird Al Show_ *during the children's programming block itself.* As a final insult, _none_ of the episodes were aired in produced sequence, leading to strained continuity. The pilot episode, wherein the central characters are introduced, was the tenth episode broadcast on CBS.
If I had nickel for every time Weird Al cut off his arm on camera, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice right?
@kungfuridinghood I don't think that happened on his show. I remember him doing that on one of the MTV specials in the early '90s. (He might've brought it back for his show though).
I would like this to be on Adult Swim with him getting full creative control. If AS is going to have non-cartoons, then this should be one of them.
10 years later, this would still be a great idea.
@@QueenArielViolet 11 years on
I wish they did that back when you suggested it

Yeah, it was at a time when they wanted all-action shows. I mean, CBS ruined Ninja Turtles, and then they got shows like Al's canned.

either way its like the second coming of rural purge when cbs what pat buturm said" cancelled every show with a tree in it"
I just saw Al's Real or Cake video, and I was reminded of this.
Same

Shaggy Shadric nooooo he obviously was cutting his arm
i thought it was a prop
I dont think so. He probably just slammd the knife into his arm

... MUST IMITATE!!!!

Ow, reminds me of Terminator 2, when the T-800 cut the skin off his arm.
Maybe if he did a sitcom filmed in front of a live studio audience. Maybe like those good ones that have an applause at the end of each episode. A primetime sitcom! Perfect!
You da Man Al!!!
The Saturday Morning Show was "The Weird Al Show". That was released on dvd just a couple years back. ALTV was what he did on MTV and later VH1 and that's the one that has too many legal issue's to iron out to be properly released on DVD.
following up 12 years later, it did get released on dvd at some point
Is that Octavia Spencer from The Help?!?
Well, this is the first Weird Al Yankovic video that made me nauseous.
I too think I'll lay down for a while.
And the Oscar goes to...
Weird Al is amazing. He does such great work.
I FINALLY FIGURED OUT HOW HE DID IT!
@Farvai0 I own the series. It's seriously some of the best sketch stuff available. I'm not sure why it was cancelled. It was brilliant. Probably just not the right time. :/
I wonder if that's the same knife he used when I saw him in concert...
i agree. I've even started playing the accordion.
There is a part of the knife that is kinda rubbery and on the other side of the knife or inside the knife there was a pill that would pop or leak to make it look like blood
OOOHH THATS DISTURBING!
*it was cancelled because it got low ratings*
The whole block did, but it was more so because Al and his crew were hard to work with.
Well that explains it.
RenegadeJuggler It does. Weird Al and CBS were always fighting over the content, especially since back when this aired, CBS redid their Saturday Morning block to be all E/I shows.
Every show I'm aware of has been canceled (except Dr. Who)
Question: How did he pull that off?
where was this clip from anyway?
Where is that damn butcher knife?!
Man, those censors ruin everyone's fun. *nods sagely*
It was not only the censors, the show was put on a sort of dead slot, so it didn't get good ratings to warrant continuation.

Drew Zuhosky Really? Last I read, the show had been moved to different time slots.
So... same reason that the Hanna Barbara Fantastic Four cartoon got canceled.
Wow that was Octavia Spencer, she’s big and Hollywood now and I’m a fan
well, i'm just going to go to the kitchen for a second....
@SUPERBLORP exactly. i was in orlando studios at this fake horror show and the guy pulled that out on a little kid's mom. the kid was freaked out
Huh, Octavia Spencer before she got famous
NOW it makes sense...🤔
If I had nickel for every time Weird Al cut off his arm on camera, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice right?

Lol, that was one of those knifes with a hole in it.
hey! that's the knife he uses in his "Real or Cake?" video
nooooooo it did come on dvd why did ya say that
Was this referring at when he got a paper cut and bled a lot on his show? Did they cancel it for that?! :O
@cenacattakproduction it's not a fake arm. The Trick knife has a half circle part that gives way when pushed on it.
Wait, did you mean AlTV, or the Weird Al Show (the saturday morning show)?
You can see the dolls arm is dark 💉🩸
Octavia Spencer. Love her!
IT'S THE BLACK WOMAN FROM THE HELP!!!!!!
BenStillHur *Octavia Spenced. She's been around for a while.
You can tell that Kitchen Knife scene was fake.
How? It was never released on dvd; too many legal issues. Or did you buy a bootleg?
I see Weardale do that a few times how could he survive it?
How did he fake the knife going in him?
Who says it is fake
e.O that made me shiver
Indeed he did, WeirdAlYankFan27. Indeed he did.
Anyone here seen this show? Was it any good?
@balley0182 aww and did you come up with that speech all by yourself? XD
@TheAmazingZdog their was a hidden blood pack on his arm and when the pressure from the knife came down it burst
He really didn't do that to his arm! Did he?
It's fake, don't worry haha
+Rednax Teews no
I assume it's intentional that the skin colour of the arm is considerably darker than Al's pale hue...
Too bad
Its seems like he likes to hurt his left hand alot.
ya think, neptune. lol
This video inspired me to cut my arm!
WHAT
Oh hi completely random woman and totally not future Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer!
i just bought the whole series on ebay i watched it on you tube first and its funny as crap lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@MrPishky Its not a fake hand. The knife is plastic and has a groove for your arm
@juniorbove how?!?!?
It is a fake arm. It's a different color than his other arm and the hand doesn't move at all.
Matt Lee the other side of his arm is in the shadow you moron
I love Weird Al ^_^
0:33 nobody’s that stupid it’s a toy
nice useage of the line from uhf
i saw a video, he has a false hand made by plastic and flubber
that was the best show!
Nice!!!
actually it was cancelled because he had some adult material in it. dont beleive me? look it up in wikipedia
uderstandable
hehe, it looked real, until there was no blood... Oh well, LOL
Seems to me like a fake arm.
Nobodys that stupid
Dont you have a song called "dare to be stupid"
4 people in here cant a take a joke
Nice
It was canceled because it was actually entertaining
ik its fake but I don't want to see him hurt :( but this man should be able to do whatever he wants\!!!!!!!!!! im glad that is fake tho
