I think it is just a trend created by the x100 and that’s all , and it is a perception I don’t think it is the reality. There are two benefits I can see on fixed cameras. Size even the smallest ILCs and the more subjective one that when you build a camera around a single lens and sensor you can optimise for image quality. Either way an xm5 with a 27mm or 18mm or even the S9 with a 24mm or 45mm can be a much better choice for most people. Admittedly I have always wanted an RX1 but could never really find a good use case for it
I have a DSLR and a mirrorless, and I just bought a bridge camera from Panasonic because I wanted to have a single unit that I could throw into a backpack or suitcase for fun. I bought the Panasonic FZ80 (fz82 in UK) because it's been around for a few years and it's relatively cheap, and the wide angle and zoom are both pretty extreme. I'm never going to get rid of my other cameras and I'm probably going to get a full frame mirrorless pretty soon, but I've been super happy with the images from the bridge camera. I can see how a fixed lens camera with a lot more tech would satisfy 90% of most people's photography needs. Black and white images from the Lumix FC80 are truly beautiful. The gradient and the shading, it's like a beautiful old-fashioned black and white film shot from the 1950s. Everything is so buttery and gorgeous.
Most fixed lens cameras I'm guessing have a leaf shutter. I have a Panasonic bridge camera that is 20-1200mm in the full frame world. Your ear has to be right next to the lens to even hear the shutter.
I have a bunch of M4/3 ICL cameras, but find the cameras I most use are Lumix fixed lens LX10 and LX100. I especially like the LX10 because it is compact, has a good moderate zoom lens, and doesn't need a lens cap. It's very pocketable and easy to carry around.
I'll be honest, I'm starting to understand the appeal of fixed lens cameras more and more. My A7iii practically lives with the 35mm f/1.8 glued on. That combo is responsible for 80% of my work. As such, a fixed lens camera like the Leica Q3 just wouldn't feel like a limitation most of the time while providing a lighter handling. It doesn't really make a lot of sense to call for an upgrade to the RX1 or RX1R, until you have actually tried the existing upgrade - the RX1Rii. That was already a big upgrade in terms of getting an EVF, tilting screen and much improved auto focus. You might find that ticks most or all the boxes already. And you certainly can't group those 3 as being the same.
Aside from like an older digi cam like a powershot or something just for fun, I have no desire to lose the functionality of interchangeable lenses. If I want something small and inconspicuous, that's easy enough to pull off with a 50mm on a small mirrorless body like a 5100 or something. Paying several hundred or even THOUSANDS of dollars for something with a fixed lens is absolutely crazy to me. If I'm going to spend that kind of money on a camera, I need it to be versatile so I can do lots of different things with it.
Fixed lens cameras are much more viable now that we have large megapixel sensors to allow massive crops and software (eg Topaz) that can make the files bigger again. The only thing the lens can’t do when cropping is to replicate the depth of field of a longer focal length but for most people most of the time that’s not an issue and will probably be less so in future as the fashion swings away from ultra narrow depth of field. My only reason to go for a "fixed lens cameras" is portability. Interchangeable cameras are generally heavy and bulky, and it matters ALOT when you're travelling. I don't really care about shutter sound unless I'm taking macro shots of insects or maybe animals.
Maybe I'm missing something here, but when I want that sort of form-factor, I just put a pancake on. I'm not anti the idea of a pocketable fixed lens thing... I just feel that, were I to buy one, nothing would really be added to what I already can do. Is this wrong?
Same. Fixed lenses are an interesting fad on the internet, but I can slap a 40mm pancake on and go and shoot, or bring out a big 600mm for a wildlife trip.. like a regular mirrorless camera isn't going to kill you, if you're going out to take photos anyway you'll already need to be carrying the thing around. I've done some street photography with a portrait grip DSLR and big zoom lens looking like the paparazzi and basically nobody cared either, plus you might get asked to take people's photos of you look like you know what you're doing.
I got rid of my fixed lens camera , canon gx7 mk2=,, I defiantly don’t want a fixed lens camera , not sure we’re you get your info from , ,,it’s not right in my case , cheers shane uk 🇬🇧
It could be nice if you are into harassing people, I mean street photography, but nearly useless for everything else. Old bridge cameras are more useful and versatile than these cameras. If someone want to carry one camera only.
You have been proven wrong about the LX100 already. The new D-LUX is popular. If Panasonic put the new 25mpx sensor into the LX100 body, give it a tilting screen, the new LUT feature... Wow. Of course they'd really clean up if they created a new GX camera, as that does have interchangeable lenses. As you mentioned for Sony, I think companies need models at the low, medium and high ends.
As old as the RX1R II is, the PDAF is still better than the X100vi and the Q3. There’s a reason people are still shooting the A7R II, it’s a fantastic camera and the RX1R II from a decade ago is that stuffed in a small body with a beautiful lens.
The RX1 was something strange in the Sony world, something strange happened there that even Canon and Nikon users value the color science of that powerful little camera. And it is still very expensive because it earned its fame and cult. But when I see the price of the Fuji X100 and the Leica, I love the rest of the brands the most.
I think fixed lens cameras are for hobbyists. If you just like shooting every now and then a fix lens is the way to go but if you do it as a job I think interchangeable is better. It just depends on who the person is. I like fix lenses but also enjoy interchangeable.
I believe Sony feels it Is a better long-term strategy to offer a camera and a similar form factor and style leanings but not necessarily fixed lens for photography. It's called the A7 CR or the A7 cii or the a6800, and you would pair it with the pancake prime lenses.
Still using sony rx1 and fuji x70 since their release. Fuji x100f sold after 2 years. I believe at least hals of hobbyists and lesser degree of pros own such cameras
…or get an A7CR & mini 40mm f/2.5 G lens and never change the lens. That’s what I have. It’s almost as compact as the RX1 and has more features than I’ll ever use at my age.
I have the Leica X-E and X-Vario....Their lenses are superb, especially the X-Vario one. My interchangeable cameras are decorating my living room only haha. By the way, if you like the Sony, you should definitely check the X-Vario, im sure it'll make a good video. =)
Nice video but...Just because you like/own a fixed lens camera does not mean others like/use the same. Most folks do not have an RX1 or simiiar fixed lens body. Most cameras can give very nice images if used properly....There are many interchangable lense cameras that cost less than the RX1...but anyway have fun.
The truth is...they aren't. The percentage of photographers who might be using a fixed lens camera is MINUTE. The percentage of that small percentage that will continue to use it long term is equally minute.

I believe the reason why Sony rx1's weren't popular is mostly and purely due to the price and battery life issue. The rx1r was selling for 3300$ ! That's ALOT of money for what is essentially a full frame ricoh gr3 . It's clear that they where competiting with the lecia q1 ,but failed to realise that the real reason why people go for a lecia is the ui and user experience. Its not that Sony was bad camera , just didn't provide enough value for that price. This was also the time when sony went all in to marketing their mirrorless bodies than anything else . And tbh other than the slightly better low-light and higher resolution , the fuji x100 provides a arguably a better looking and experience based product at 1/3 the price ! And Ricoh gr3 is the definition of a niche product and it's does that niche perfectly at a price even lower than fuji. Now that the used prices are low for Sony, people finally started having interest cuz it's 100% provides the value for it's price
Sometimes instead of a lens if I can get the fixed lens camera for that focal length for similar price i would get it. I got the Fujixf10 while looking for a 28mm equivalent lens. It is small like a Ricoh GR and was at decent price then

NO ... thats why i have all first gen A7, A7r and a7s -> has interchangeable lenses... although the RX1 is an excellent device, the A7 is not a much bigger camera but offers many more options and with compact lenses is near RX1 maybe that is why RX1 is it not so much preferred with still high prices. When I don't have space, the RX100 and the NEX-C3 are enough for simple clicking. Camera like the RX1 is simply not interesting for many users, although it looks like a small and powerful camera, there are cheaper and more powerful ones like A7r with FE35/f1.8 can take incredible sharp pictures with minimal depth and huge dynamic range in very bright sunlight, for which I would must use accessories like ND filters, additional viewfinder and others but A7 will work even without it and more cheaper...
Spending 1000s of $ on a fixed lens camera when you can buy cameras that are just as good or better with interchangeable lenses is just a fad, just like a fixies, these bicycles without brakes and gears.
First of all the majority of people use a mobil to take pictures. We that use a camera are a small minority. Love my fixed lens Leica D-Lux 8 with its zoom!
Remove the bottom and use pressed Air against sensor dust.
Yeah im starting to get really tired of lens changing and decision to choose lenses. i bought myself ZV1M2.
Fixed lens cameras are so hot right now, at least in my world! I've got the S9 with the 45mm F2.8 'mimicking' the new Leica Q3 43, and I've had the Ricoh GRiiix for a while too. That replaced my X100F, and I'm seriously tempted by an LX100ii or D-Lux8 right now 🤣 The best camera is the one you have with you right? I know that I'll always be picking up one of my smaller bodies anytime I leave the house!
Fixed lenses are a way of life! Yes, the fake Leica Q3 43 😂 Funnily enough, I still forget my super small fixed lens camera all the time. Let's be real, we just need Leicas...
Not everyone!
But more than some!
You just have a interchangable lens camera, with a none removable lens.
The rest is just old age.
And nobody is changing to this as far as a know.
Leaf shutter. Higher flash sync. Less power
I like to combine leaf shutters with flash on my RX1 and Leica Q.
Hey George, this may be a dumb question but can your presets be used without Lightroom? Thanks!
Hi! Sadly not at the moment, I would like to explore other platforms but it's hard to know which platforms to prioritise - if I do I will make it public, which software are you using?
@@GeorgeHolden thanks for your reply! I only use Microsoft’s photo editor, but heard DXO might be one to look into. But I’m very interested in presets so I might try LR for a while. Thanks!
This video was very cutesy, very demure, very mindful.
My only reason to go for a "fixed lens cameras" is portability. Interchangeable cameras are generally heavy and bulky, and it matters ALOT when you're travelling. I don't really care about shutter sound unless I'm taking macro shots of insects or maybe animals.
Given how extensive the Sony range is, im actually shocked they havent updated it. I'd also love one to be honest!
It's an easy win for them, maybe next year 🥲
hey Geoge great video, what about the super expensive RX1 MkII ?
Why doesn't anyone on TH-cam sell presets? 🙄
What's that sling bag? been looking for one like that forever!
Uniqlo crescent crossbody sling
What made you sell it?
It could be nice if you are into harassing people, I mean street photography, but nearly useless for everything else. Old bridge cameras are more useful and versatile than these cameras. If someone want to carry one camera only.
Great Video!
I would love Olympus to release a digital version of the Olympus MJU II or some fixed lens PEN F. Sadly that will never happen
They’re not, they’re really not.
The RX1 was something strange in the Sony world, something strange happened there that even Canon and Nikon users value the color science of that powerful little camera. And it is still very expensive because it earned its fame and cult. But when I see the price of the Fuji X100 and the Leica, I love the rest of the brands the most.
They are not photographer for a living they only love camera
I think fixed lens cameras are for hobbyists. If you just like shooting every now and then a fix lens is the way to go but if you do it as a job I think interchangeable is better. It just depends on who the person is. I like fix lenses but also enjoy interchangeable.
I believe Sony feels it Is a better long-term strategy to offer a camera and a similar form factor and style leanings but not necessarily fixed lens for photography. It's called the A7 CR or the A7 cii or the a6800, and you would pair it with the pancake prime lenses.
One thing to note is that the majority of the fixed lens cameras you sited are all for video
RX2 would be nice.
Because my Q2 and Q2M Came that way
Still using sony rx1 and fuji x70 since their release. Fuji x100f sold after 2 years. I believe at least hals of hobbyists and lesser degree of pros own such cameras
The meme that randomly comes tho 😭😭😭😭 (I love it)
…or get an A7CR & mini 40mm f/2.5 G lens and never change the lens.
I'm not everyone apparently, I'm certainly not switching! 🙃 (but have an ancient Canon 'handy cam' in my pocket often)
I gasped
😮
The truth is...they aren't. The percentage of photographers who might be using a fixed lens camera is MINUTE. The percentage of that small percentage that will continue to use it long term is equally minute.
I still use my RX1R 2 it’s so compact
the amount of ads and promotion you're putting in the video is frustrating
I think TH-cam does that. I've had complaints on my other channel & I don't put any ads in.
@@thegreatvanziniphotos5976 no, its two squarespace sponsor in the evening and his own preset thing in the middle. I have TH-cam premium but still having to see tons of ads added by the creator themselves. Sometimes its acceptable. But mentioning it 3 times is way too much.
@@thegreatvanziniphotos5976 No, its the creator himself. He added Squarespace section twice, and mentioning his preset for sale once. I have TH-cam premium and still have to endure ads added into the video by the creator themselves. I understand that people need to make money, but adding 3 ads in video thats less than 10 mins long is a little too much, it shows that the channel is only there for money and not for passion for producing good quality content.
you right man!
It looks like a store on the couch
@@ing-tangtawanhello sir, Squarespace requires an up front disclosure plus a sponsored integration - as with every creator. This is the second time I have plugged my presets ever, so as it costs you nothing to watch I am within my rights to try support the videos I make. These videos don't take 5 minutes to make, they take hours if not days - so you'll have to forgive me trying to support the work I put in to make things for you to watch 👍
"Demure". Please, not you too.
Get with the times man
Everyone?
Use your 🧠
Wow! I have an interchangeable lens camera but only one lens!
Quick answer: they're not.
Your everyone is not the same as my everyone
Sometimes instead of a lens if I can get the fixed lens camera for that focal length for similar price i would get it. I got the Fujixf10 while looking for a 28mm equivalent lens. It is small like a Ricoh GR and was at decent price then
Oh nice! What do you think of the XF10? I find that line of cameras quite cool but haven't tried yet
@@GeorgeHoldenmany don’t like as it is not like classic Fuji with manual control. But I quite like it. It is exact replica of Ricoh GRs with similar features like snap focus. I like ae it Gives classic Fuji Colors
@@neeravnaik Is it the x-trans 1 ?
@@GeorgeHoldenyes xtrans apsc

Probably not fixed lens (non-changeable) but yes I prefer fixed focal lenses since day 1.
Hi George.
That intro had me laughing like a drain...

I miss my lumix lx7
Can you use shutter 1/8000 with f1,8 / f1,4 or 0,95? NO ... thats why i have all first gen A7, A7r and a7s -> has interchangeable lenses... although the RX1 is an excellent device, the A7 is not a much bigger camera but offers many more options and with compact lenses is near RX1 maybe that is why RX1 is it not so much preferred with still high prices.
How often do you need 1/8000 for street photography? Everyone in your town is the flash?
Spending 1000s of $ on a fixed lens camera when you can buy cameras that are just as good or better with interchangeable lenses is just a fad, just like a fixies, these bicycles without brakes and gears.
It's like this internet thing, it'll die out soon
Ricoh gr3 is just the perfect camera in this segment of the market, I don't see any reason go grab a fuji X100 nor anything the size of the Sony
Sitting here with my Sony RX10 iv just waiting for a bigger battery...
First of all the majority of people use a mobil to take pictures. We that use a camera are a small minority. Fixed lens cameras like Fuji and Leica Q are still point and shoot cameras- Take that on a safari and you will most of the fun. The really serious photography are mostly done by cameras with interchangeable lenses together with a lot of accessorieslike flashes and tripods and many other gear. I sometime take my Fuji X20 when I walk the dog in case I find something interesting during the walk. It is also a perfect street camera. Let's be serious- There are many types of cameras and lenses for different tasks. The perfect camera for everyone is still not constructed and will presumably never exist.
Fixed lens is way to go
“Taking phooOOUU” 😂
Sony should skip this and make a fixed lens medium format camera in a small form factor.
Why the thumbnail re-use? 🙄
It's not a re use? Same camera but I took these photos yesterday 😂
@@GeorgeHolden I understand the consistency but with it being the same camera and same pose, the background didn't draw me in to see the alight difference hah... Don't mind me, I was just thinking out loud 😅
