I found the key to beating GAS. I unsubscribed from over 200 photography channels and don’t feel the need to buy anything else. I spent approximately $50,000 over the last 10 years and have had every camera from the Sony A1 down to the smallest point and shoot. I’ve had bridge cameras and at least three cameras from every manufacturer. I no longer have subscribed channels where I see 20 videos telling me I need to buy a lens or camera on launch day. I fought the urge but thought I needed to buy each one because the influencers said so. Now I just look for the occasional skill related video then shut down TH-cam. If you have severe GAS, try unsubscribing. It works and I’m glad I did.

Minimal system is the best. I shoot all of my event photography with just 2 Olympus E-M1 Mk 1 bodies with a 14-52mm on one, and a 50-200mm on a 1.4x converter on the other. 2 Bodies, 2 Lenses covering 28mm to 560mm. Love this channel and I couldn't agree more. The longer I've been a photographer, the less into the latest and greatest gear I've become. I remember DigitalRev back in the day did a series called, Cheap Camera-Pro photographer. They gave a terrible, sometimes toy camera to a pro photographer for the day and told them to shoot with it. The results were always incredible, and really showed how important the skills of photography are over any gear.

My big cupboard is full of photographic gear which are mostly junk, in the sense that I never use them. I have so many cameras (10+) because I keep convincing myself that getting the latest and greatest will re-energise my interest and go out and challenge myself. @@TL-xw6fh I appreciate what you are saying. I’m an enthusiast. After having utilitarian pocketable point and shoot cameras over the last 20 years I got my 1st full frame, “serious”, camera (Sony A7IV) in 2023. Even though I had a camera for a lot of the time I really learned how to shoot and use my camera after my A7IV because I was/I am using it so much more and exploring.
It was soooo expensive! I use it to capture the fleeting moments of my life, just like all my cameras before, but also in so many more ways that bring me long lasting peace and joy!, (sunsets, street photography, events I seek out, etc.). It isn’t just a utilitarian tool, it brings me joy and has helped me absorb the moment. Still, even though most of the cameras I had over the years were nothing to brag about they were excellent in capturing the tender moments of my life that I can now go back and recount on, (even though I didn’t know much about photography or how to use every feature they offered).
I probably will never be a 10 camera person myself, but I can’t blame too much someone who has been a serious shooter their whole life at some point getting curious about using a different camera or lens,(not all bad). (I.e. there are other flavors of ice cream outside of vanilla!). Of course don’t make yourself broke trying out everything.
Still, there are some who I know say, that new camera actually got them out of their rut and made photography fun again for them.

To make up for the lack of features and camera quality. I learned to be master at what i had to work with. I would have to make interesting props in the garden or travel to places to tell story with my photography. It made work harder at making good photos! Haha because my camera was very bad!

I just pu chased a Fuji X100VI. I am so happy. That being said, I am in NYC for a week of street photography. I brought two LUMIX GX9s a prime and two zooms. Why? Sheer weight and size. M43 gear is smaller and lighter than APSC.
Better & more expensive gear, assuming you know how to use them, don’t make you a better photographer. If this is true, more of us would be using Leica gear.
I use old gear. Even six year old gear like my GX9 is more camera than I need. New gear provides incremental improvements in performance. Can we see these improvements? Will these incremental improvements significantly improve our images? Probably not. Frequently good enough is more than adequate for our needs. There is a difference between needing a 35mm lens and owning four of them.

You make some of the videos I set out to make when I started my channel, but you actually do it successfully lol. What you said in the beginning is so true for many I think! Sadly I also think it's some people just like buying stuff (I mean... anything). YOU bring to our attention over and over again (in your sneaky, entertaining and inoffensive way) that bending to the consumerism is for dumb dumbs! People don't like being told they're dumb dumbs, but you're so nice about it! Out of necessity I sell a comparable camera or lens before buying a new one. In comments I've had people get really upset with me about this. They would rather I keep everything, like I'm made of money over here or I have room for it all. "George Holden" would understand, is what I say to myself. Carrying around a bunch of stuff I don't use, or collecting stuff in general isn't going to work over here. I actually do have a very small collection of vintage cameras that don't work (for the most part) that I'm making a small display with. Ok, back to making another video nobody watches! BTW, yes you NEED the F1.4 version of your focal lengths when it comes out, and then the F1.2 when that comes out (just kidding).

I've often imagined one professional, respected photographer to take, say, ten photographs with a Praktica MTL5B and another ten with a Nikon F2AS. Each with its own 50mm f 1.8 lens attached. The results to be judged by a panel of film critics (or other pro photogs) to see if they can conclusively see the difference. There might be an interchangeable lens system in my future but for now I’m learning all the time with that X100V … it even accompanies me on my road bicycle adventures! 📷🚴‍♂️⛵️🙂

“The best camera (&/or lense) is the one you have with you.” I’m sure I’ve heard that before. 😂😂 And I totally understand your point, George. I’ve moved from 3 canon point & shoots to a Canon Rebel DSLR + lenses to THREE Olympus M4/3 + lenses. And now I have returned to a Canon G7xII point & shoot. Oh - & my iPhone 13. Seriously doubt that I’ll be “upgrading” again.

GAS is less costly than overcoming retail addiction in therapy. I confess I’m an addict. I search EBay daily. Getting good deals is likened to a sport. Add to that the thrill of using gear from 50 years ago and achieving good images. A technical Geek, yes.
I have never bought a new camera or lens. I realise now I do fund the manufacturers. By my purchases I free up others to buy new.
Great reminder to spend more on life’s experiences and less on gear. So off to S. America & 😂😂😂😂Antartica next year!

Did that with my 50's / Helios 44's bought em tested the variations and most were the same, so I sold em on, then I got a few 50's and stuck with one that was a good max F stop and sold the rest for profit. Love experimenting with other lenses and various funky lenses, then either keep or sell on, it's fun to try if you get to use them!
Like my main lenses atm are a sigma 15-35 3.5-4.5 a Zeiss 85mm, a 35mm Soligor manual for Bhoke, 50mm 1.8 pentacon, and a Sigma 500mm for moon/astral! knowing your lenses and lane and not overdoing it is key and keeping your kit to specifics where possible is great too!

Part of the problem is having too many options. If you’ve got loads of gear, where do you start? It could be here or there with this or that lens. Necessity is the mother of invention. How do I do this without that thing, item or gadget. It’s then one starts thinking beyond the tried and tested and exploring the potential or limitations of that single tool in ones possession . I use the Rx1r for that reason.

Many decades ago I bought the Pentax ME, I then bought half a dozen lenses to go with it. I then ended up with a camera bag which was a heavy pain on holidays. I sold the lot. After that a series of point and shoot digital cameras, most with a decent zoom. These days I want a zoom camera which will fit in a pocket. I hate looking like a tourist.

Back in the Film days, a Photographer like myself chose a Brand Name, whether through recommendation from friends, or chose the Brand one likes, and pretty much stuck with it.. One or two Bodies, and a selection of Lenses, and it's all one needed more or less..
In todays Digital Age, Photographers, young or old got into the Craze of trying all kinds of gear.. All known brands offered different Features from one another, and gave everyone to many choices - that's when GAS kicked in.. Before people can figure things out, it was to late!!
Although, the Digital world is slowing down, and Film is actually on the Rise, which I find nice to see!

Love this. I've had G.A.S., too. "How can I possibly NOT get that lens? I would NEVER want to be caught without it." But my shoots are pressured one-time events that (it's so lovely) force me to think simple. Two lenses is enough. A Canon EF 24-105/4 and 70-200/2.8 II can do it almost all. For 300mm, an R50 body - I'm licking my whiskers over how wonderful the pictures look with that cheap body and great glass!

The bell curve you show is the typical (and necessary?) path from (at the left) primitive over (in the middle) complicated to (at the right) simple. Primitive and simple seem to be similar, and the path through complicated may seem to be unnecessary. I do not think so: you need to get through the trouble and learning (curve!) to be able to see the essence. ... In the end, every single experience and every single piece of gear helped to reach the goal. THEN, however: no longer necessary to keep all the stepping stones in your baggage. Sell your "beautiful, perfect" gear to all the newcomers who still are on the left side of the bell curve.

I remember moving with my mom and seeing how much stuff we collect in our lives that we don't need. Since then I've tried not to buy everything I want.
I don't know if that translates to English will be ok but "excess breeds deficit" ( author Jacek Walkiewicz).
I'm thinking about buying an Olympus E-500 because it has a Kodak CCD sensor. I'm a little skeptical about whether it's a necessary purchase.
And I look at it, the time I spend looking for it should be spent taking pictures with the camera I have, playing with my kids and taking pictures, or do something from my todo list.

I take different yet similar route. I am by no means a pro, not even a serious amature. So most of my shooting was with my phone, and a Nikon B700. That was it. Then I started finding cameras at thrift stores. An old Sony H1. Another Sony, an SLT-A57 with an 18-55 and a 75-300 lens. A Nikon1J1 with 10 and an 18.5 mm primes. A Canon SX50HS. A series of Film era Pentax lenses that I have adapted to some of my cameras. Too many point and shoots to name. It's GAS by a different path. I need help.

I'd argue people need to purchase different equipment then to sell it to find out what they like and or need. I went through a few though probably smaller than many to arrive at a camera and a few lenses I stick with. I purchased and sold most inexpensive older gear which really didn't hurt, but I found what I liked. For example, I found out I prefer eyepoints above 20 and magnification size is not as important to me on evfs like dslrs. I'm not a fan of dslrs (I like the split/prism focus screens), but I am fine with SLRs and Rangefinders. Finding an older and hard to use camera makes you appreciate even the cameras people think are old or too dated. I settled on the x-e2, xf 16mm f2.8, ttartisan 25mm f2, viltrox 56mm f1.7 and xf 70-300mm. :)

This is so true. On gear I've started a one out one in policy on lenses. Sold my XF 18mm when I realised I wanted to buy the 16mm for the newer lens tech. Instead I bought the Sigma 10-18mm and am loving it. It's bigger than both but I go out with it at 18mm and just drop back to 10-16mm if I need to. Now selling my XC 35mm so that'll leave me with the wide zoom, a 27mm and a 56mm. Just three lenses. Now I need to sell two cameras, why do I need three XF mount bodies?

How true. However, I do find GAS comes in waves. Periods of impulse time. I convinced myself i needed a 35mm f1.8 stabilized instead of my 40mm 2.8 for lower light.. but.. do I? I can take good photos wirh both and I can make do most likely.. or the R6 instead of the RP. Or even mirrorless instead of a reliable SLR when my last one partially failed. I worried myself about FPS and autofocus speed when I only occasionally shoot wildlife and mostly just for myself and to hang out in nature with a friend. I usually just prefer a normal 35-50mm lens and good light to work with. It makes you move around to try compositions, then when you do get photos it looks natural to the eye as a person might see it, similar with not having a stupidly large aperture, just a little to direct some attention. Ive even taken my 2005 5D out and taken much the same photos as I could on my R6 and.. well, they look good. It just takes a little bit more effort for some tasks.

GAS is a clear symptom of a lack of confidence on our own photography work. As new gear could fill the gaps somehow. I have been using my xpro2 for almost 7 years and rather spend my money travelling than on new equipment. Vision and practice are way more important than gear.
