- Time to go back to good old Freelancer. A game developed by Digital Anvil and published by Microsoft. It was released for PC only on March 4th, 2003. Now, what the game lacks in graphics, it makes up for in a huge expansive universe, spot-on controls and a pretty gripping story.

I'm very happy that someone gives an updated review of this game. I tell you whoever didn't try it, this game is beyond amazing! Awesome story, beautiful graphics for its age, wide variety of ships and factions, and of course, modders do an amazing job with this game too! Probably this game won't get a remake but it's absolutely worth to play! Especially when you get the Valkyrie ship!

Oh, just a side note! It's best to upgrade the game with mods for modern systems. There are HD texture packs you just need to dig around, widescreen patches, bloom graphics enhancement, etc. I played through this game many times so I got a mod where I can buy stronger ships earlier and can equip any kind of weaponry, making it more fun to blast through the story >:))))

There's a part in this game where you find some kind of artifact, and you have to run away because you become wanted when you find it. Then you go to this far off base to hide... I have no idea why but its the reason I love those sequences in game where you have to Run away as part of the story and it takes you to a new part of the world you can only experience for a short time
I remember playing this in 2003. I still think it was way ahead of it's time. I'll have to try out Star Citizen now.
Played this game a lot in my teens. Great memories. Looking forward to Everspace 2 full release in 2022 now.

After playing the game, I don't recommend it. It doesn't feel like Freelancer to me. Starfield in a few days from now, for early access! I am truly hyped for this game! @@James-Lifts

I've played this game many times.
I've installed the various popular mods, played on custom servers, run my own servers for friends to play with.
Yeah I got my money's worth and more.
I wish there was a sequel, but for some reason it never happened, which is a darn shame.
It was made by the same people working on Star Citizen, but I doubt that game will come out at all, it’s been almost 11 years in development and they supposedly adding new features without ever showing proper gameplay of the things they add. What they need is what they had for this game, they need a publisher to tell them that enough is enough and release the damn game. That what Microsoft did to them for this game, Microsoft wasn’t having any of their antics about 10 year development cycle.
Thank you for the nostalgia. I love this game, it was and remains a masterpiece.

Im 23 Years old and this was one of my first games ive ever played. And i still LOVE this game, i love the story, the ships, the galaxy. I hope someday there will be a Remake

Still the best space sim of all time, no game manages to scratch the itch that Freelancer left. I find myself coming back to it at least once a year.

Loved Freelancer, but Elite: Dangerous with HOSAS, throttle, wheel and VR is one way to scratch that itch and more.

Loved the sections when you were friends with pirates I spend hours upon hours in the section just to play as a pirate docking at pirate stations and raiding trade routes
I used to play this game with my Dad, brother and friends growing up. So nostalgic. I play a lot of Elite: Dangerous now. . .
Such an amazing advanced game for its time. Actually amazing. When things were made out of both pure passion and to push boundaries.
Fav all time game! Love the systems that you can travel and there are also hidden aliens system to explore. Great review of the game btw !

Thank you for this review. I can add only that if you know how to find wrecks, you can do campaign in about 12 hours and get best ship in the game with best gear in like 15 hours. Nuff said I still have to visit every wreck and system.

One of the best space games I have ever played. I played this over the summer in college. I spend a couple of night playing this. Felt compelled to go to bed when he started to get light out.

If you are genuinly curios: The game is not on GoG because the license to the IP is in a state of limbo, just like with Dune. Not for the lack of trying of the guys from CPR from what I know some are huge Discovery fans.
The music "Liberty Bar #2" is the best. Also, why do the bars have endless pits and canyons around their tables?

in 2023 there is X4 although it does not have such great main storyline it has mutliple decent subplots , space station building, trading, missions, multiple factions, ship boarding and stealing, sabotage and most important one entire game can be played in pretty much RTS mode...
One of my top 10 games of all time. I'm replaying this for the first time since it was new and surprised at how well it stands up. The cutscenes look like crap... but the space scenery, combat, controls, storyline, and everything else pretty much are top notch! There is a widescreen hack by the way.
This game was phenomenal, I can't remember how many countless hours I spent playing multiplayer as an early teen. And this was around 2009, when it'd all ready been 6 years since its release.
Unfortunately the closest thing we have to a sequel is Star Citizen, also helmed by Chris, but we all know the development hell that's experienced. Almost 10 years later and still no official release date...
Great review, I totally agree with your final summary. I really enjoyed this game back in the day and played it a lot. It was a great mix of story, missions and freedom to explore and trade. Was a great step forward from the older 8 bit Elite and Wing Commander generation of games. Without story and people to meet more modern games like Elite Dangerous feel empty and lifeless. They are impressive simulations but I can't feel immersed and don't feel part of a game world. The game play just feels more like work. I have been waiting for another great mix of Story/RPG/Space sim since Freelancer and finally there is a chance that Starfield will have all these elements. The other reason I am very excited for Starfield is that it is designed to support mods. We have been waiting for a space sim rpg for many years, so I think the modding community will go nuts with Starfield. It's going to be great times ahead.
Everspace 2 and Rebel Galaxy Outlaw are the closest things to Freelancer we have for now but they're both too flashy imo and geared more towards the arcadey elements than the worldbuilding which defeats the purpose

Might also be worth looking into games development deeper, especially for this one...and now with hindsight 20 years later : how it has impacted the genre.

Love Freelancer, definitely top 5 all time games. Best part? NO MICRO TRANSACTIONS! I modded the crap out of this game. I gave the outcasts access to Kusari battleships, and now I fly around a systems I made, shooting down infinite battleships. I also made a system where the house navies fight the outcasts with battleships. I just can't seem to get the info cards for planets and bases to display the proper text, but I'll figure that out someday. Good video! Thanks.

this game was awesome dog fighting, used to lol at my flat mate taking 10mins to turn his ship around in Eve. Even better online, our clan had its own system Lootopia built on our server, even had a npc with my real name on one of the starships hehe. shame Microsoft stopped supporting it, could imaine that kind of game doing well with a cosmetic shop

Freelancer is a very good game. Still played it so now and than. But Chris Roberts is now working on star citizen. Looks very promising imo.

freelancer needs more modifications just like Path of exile for example. Not just relay on these very simple shoot and aim mechanics. would be cool if ur shots forked off enemies or chained between enemies and so forth. maybe you could add more depth with mods. witch they have done but those mods usually are very simple too and doesn't really change combat too much
