First Mafia, Battlefield 2, Call of Duty 2 (and 4), Doom ( 1 2 3), Gothic.. and many more. Games made, so taht when you pay a full game, you get a full game. You can buy expension packs, but they were mostly worth it. I am glad I grew up in that time as well. First games I played were on DOS btw, yes I am old...

You're absolutely right about the 100 hours mark - they lure you in with free to play elements and you get invested in your character and when you reach end game, they will make you want to pay to progress your character simply because almost everything will cost 'diamonds' or whatever it's called in this game. I don't mind spending $10 a month end game but unfortunately, games like this tend to cost way, way more to maintain.

I miss when games where pay a set amount for the product. Then later on pay for dlc expansions. Before you buy it you can experience it as a demo. This was a great set-up. I think on mobile you should be able to play through the first part without paying. If they make it free to play its just that and you pay for expansions to the game or cosmetics after you invested time into the base of the game.

The whole game is completely free to play. I'm up to hell 1+ paragon and you unlock way more free content. The only aspect of "pay to win" is the legendary crests, however I don't think it's too pay to win as legendary gems have a small chance of dropping in vault raids and dungeons anyways and also all your armour drops get buffed as you level - keeping your combat rating on par with the content they throw at you at higher levels. You're all just whining about something that won't impact your gameplay unless you sink 200+ hours into it. Will you?

In the game development jargon, this game is the prime example of what we call an "honey trap".
It's actually really hard to make a good honey trap in video games. The principle is to put enough honey (good stuff) to make sure the player have fun rolling in it, but not too much as to allow him/her to have its fill and move on elsewhere before being trapped into the vicious circle of investing into the product. Diablo Immortal does it quite perfectly as in it doesn't just allow player to invest hundreds of hours for free, but can make the process "fun".
Those who feel like other are wrongly complaining about it are usually those who are still in the "rolling in the honey" phase. It doesn't mean that they will be part of those who will put money into the game, but they are still potential buyers even if they are currently highly doubtful of it. It's the concept of the honey trap as to make the game endearing enough for people to think they believe in something only just to slowly crawl into their temptation.
It always starts as "I'll just put 5$ here. I haven't paid anything yet and It's not like I paid 60$ (or more) for it anyway." and then "Another 5$... no make it 10$. I get more from putting 10$ anyway!" and 2 years later from that point, the amount invested is usually equals or higher than that of a regular priced game. It's a vicious circle that doesn't start when you launch the game, but when you get trapped by the fun you had playing the game. It's the exact same trap principle used by casino, but in this case the player has an absolute 0 chances of actually getting their investment back outside of the game.

@@dgage1776 There's no "real gamers" anymore. There's only "gamers with enough self-control" and "gamers without enough self-controls".
You could also replace the word "control" with "patience" as it's 99.9% of the time related and a good (in terms of business model) honey trap will make use of the player's patience as one of the many ways of crawling into his/her temptation.
I could write a wall of text about how the market and explain the market's various points (saturation, peak, evolution, etc.) There are multiple reasons (not just $$$) as to why games with badly-viewed business models (like the Honey Traps model) keep appearing instead of just following the popular trend of the Cosmetic-Only approach (like Path Of Exile) or the Time-Skipping Approach (like Warframe). In fact, that's mostly the reason why PoE and Warframe still exists today, ironically.

The game really sucks tho. Being a long time Blizzard Supporter, i do infact understand people complaining about this.
Gameplay sucks, it feels like watered down Diablo 3, with bad Mobile Controls (decent in comparison i guess)
Pay to Win lures you in at first seeing nonexistent, than endgame you need to invest.
The Lore absolutely sucks, no doubt. Not even a debate really.
Also Blizzard has made a joke out of themselves with this and the way they teased and released this..
And then the most obvious. Nobody asked for this. Diablo 4 is what was asked for, Diablo 4 is what they used to make people care about the announcement even remotely, and Diablo Immortal is what they did Annonce then. If they just casually mentioned, yo where going to make a mobile game, nobody would have cared as much.
Also it feels like the lack of Content for the way better Diablo 3, as well as the non existing sequel of Diablo 4 / an alternative PC-Product (aka a "Real Game, most people really dont care about mobile, me included, wouldnt even given this game a try if it wasnt a Diablo game" ) in a similiar fashion is related to the Production of this game.
The critic really is justified. Sometimes over the top, but justified nonetheless, this really is a fail in my opinion

It makes me sick how corporations pull every trick, hire every lawyer, use every loophole, lobby every politician, bend every law, and exploit every oversight to drain us dry, with no morale, ethos, or any slightest sent of good intentions. The only thing that counts, is profit, leaving dead bodies, poisoned communities, and exploited war thorn countries behind. As long as the shareholders are happy, aka my dick gets sucked tonight.
It's quite interesting to look back and inquire about what kind of mega projects past and present societies would pour their resources into.
As in the different Pyramids around the world, cities, water irrigation systems, and roads.
Well in modern history it's a weapon system. Not a super skyscraper, not a green mega city, not a transcontinental transit system, not a way to green the desert, use solar power or fight world hunger, no the F 32 Lightning 2 cost an estimate of 1.5 TRILLION dollars to develop.
What does that tell us about a society that spends more energy, ingenuity, time, and manpower in its mutual, complete, and many times over self-destruction than ever in human remembrance? What does that tell us about our leaders? About our opinion-makers? Lobbyists? Media outlets, all over the world???
It would be so nice to just shut it all off, just for a day. nobody logs in, nobody turns on the tv, nobody goes to his non-health or security-related job, nobody shots in the wars... yes, the system would collapse to a big part, but it would only restart with our help, not our blood...

I appreciate the unbiased review, and I like your guys' content. But I feel like you guys didn't go into nearly enough detail or do your research regarding the monetization practices of this game, and just how bad it really is. It is absolutely egregious, even by mobile game standards. P2W Players will have literal years of progress over F2P players all because they were willing to shell out some money. The end game gets extremely grindy from what I've heard and seen, and this is where the MTX gets pushed even more and more.
From rough estimates it would take 10 years, yes you read that right: YEARS, not hours, not days, not weeks, 10 YEARS, to fully max out ONE character with all of the required 5-star Gems on F2P. Or, you could just pay anywhere from 100-500K USD and skip all of that to max out your ONE character. Like I said this is shameful even by mobile game standards. We can't allow this to be "normal" because it's not, and shouldn't be. They keep moving the needle further and further to try and normalize this sick behavior, and prey on people who are prone to gambling addictions.
Highly suggest checking out Bellular News' videos on the game if you're at all interested in the topic because his team has gone into great detail at the absolute lengths that Blizzard has gone to make this game a shameless cash-grab.
Really heartbreaking to see this go this way because I'm a genuine fan of the Diablo IP, and this feels like a sick and utterly complete bastardization of it. I hate to see all of these talented developers and game designers work go to waste, because by all accounts it is a SOLID game when not considering the MTX.
It has been so egregiously monetized because of greedy Bobby Kotick and his goons want to squeeze the general population for everything that we're worth. Please boycott this game, or - at the very least, don't give them a dime of your money. Rant end 😮‍💨

But from what I've been hearing, there's layers of unreasonable monetization in here especially towards the end game. I'm not a fan of having any sort of progress influenced by how much money I've spent in the game, so that's a pass from me.

The vids you see are based from beta , none of the vids feature the Dev and tester chat . They revamped system and entirely changed gem stats and how many variables. There are 4-6x the total gems and they now come in . 01 % incremental differences . So those idiots with under 10 gems and only 5 increments figured out it costs 100k , there is easily 40+ gems in 200 increment variants and upgrading doesn't cost premium any more . The actual p2w number is likely in the millions of dollars and thats if you are lucky as hell.

Yeah, this is what I was thinking would happen. Good story, good combat, then hits you hard for endgame. $10 a month may be a good boost for awhile, the cost will go up for sure. Games like FFBE, now you’re expected to spend about $100 a month (and they get plenty of people who do) just to be in the top 10% of ranked events.
I’d say even after a few months and a healthy endgame player base, you still can’t accurately say how bad it can be. Because the developers can always start to bleed the players.

I played this on PC with KBM and it worked pretty well, never really had issues with anything. Though I will say the UI seems like a mess, like you get awards on one screen, then you earn rewards on another, that'll earn you XP on the Battle Pass and the XP from the Battle Pass gets you gems - like it's just waaay too much going around the UI to claim stuff from the different pools of materials, currency, upgrades, etc. At least that's how I feel.

Over the past decade people have become obsessed with being "the best" or "maxed" in games. This was never the case in the mmorpg scene. Most players were just enjoying the games regardless of their progress. I keep this in mind in regards to pay to win games. You don't have to spend thousands of dollars. You don't have to be the best. You don't have to be maxed. Just hop on, enjoy the game and when your bored hop off. It's not that serious. Back in diablo 2, I played it for years and was never "good". I never had maxed gear and the best rune words yet I still had a blast and it's one of my favorite games of all time. I don't understand people's obsessions with maxing. If you're maxed what's left to do anyways?

    • @apoliticalfolly5250
      @apoliticalfolly5250 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

TLDR- The monetization system in this game is the most egregious I have ever seen even considering some of the nastiest microtransaction free to play titles I've touched or seen. This isn't just about "maxing" like you've framed it, its much more insidious a system than I think you fully understand.
      Non TLDR:
Some short background on my experience with Diablo Immortal: I've grinded to Paragon 16 on a Necro without spending any money on anything but the battle pass so my present "investment" is 5 dollars. My toon's combat score is roughly around 900. I have no X out of 5 star gems, but I've been grinding with what little crests I've gotten and most of my extra unwanted gems are being sold on the marketplace for platinum so I can just outright trade my way up. This is possible but its extremely grindy and today is the first day I have outright just refused to play the game.
Now for my response to your comment.
"This has never been the case in MMORPG scene" What do you mean? Those games literally are all about being "Maxed." The endgame content in WoW, Rift, Guild Wars, Guild Wars 2 FF11, FF14, Destiny, Destiny 2 etc. is literally all about maxing your gear and centering your legendary equipment around your build so you can complete higher challenge raid/instance/dungeon content. There are entire strategies players have built out to fully power level their toons and maximize their gear/equip score and they've existed now for decades starting back before WoW ever even game out. Not everyone goes about playing for the endgame but to act as though most people who've dedicated years of their life to MMOs aren't trying to maximize their character is kind of a farce. Think Mythic Raids or in Diablo 3 Elder Rifts. In the case of D2 for example the ladders in D2 were centered around first to finish content. Those leaderboards in DI? Those are centered around how the majority of the ladder playerbase played Diablo 2 just like seasonal content in D3 is centered around that same premise. They did this in D3 because its what PLAYERS wanted out of the endgame experience. In DI the monetization is beyond insidious because people were able to dedicate ONLY TIME to this before, they spent their 40 or 20 or whenever they bought the D2 battle chest and then they were able to try to push for weekly or monthly ladders in the first to finish level 99 uber portals etc. Now they've taken that format and forced you to pay to play, not pay to win, and they've done this in such a way that its predatory. I don't actually have a problem with the game pushing microtransactions, its a fact of the mobile gaming life. I have a problem with the way that they are implemented. Soon enough when players reach paragon 30 and hit Hell 2 difficulty I guarantee they are going to reach a hard wall where content is unplayable without at least spending some money. This is not to mention the fact this game will have SEASONS like D3 does meaning the content you could give in and pay a little for now MIGHT be completely useless. I say might because we aren't there yet and I am trying to be fair.
To compare this a bit to Genshin Impact I think is a fair bet because the Eternal Orbs are basically a 1-1 in real world money valuation to Primogens(the pay for currency in genshin) and the Elder Rifts in DI are essentially toon draws you have to play a minigame before you draw a toon and instead of toons you get gems. The thing about Primogens? You can acquire them through playing. I played a fair bit of Genshin when it came out and I enjoyed my time with it without spending money. I drew a couple five star toons I drew good equipment drops and I made it fairly far before having to pay out anything. I also was incredibly lucky in my draws. Which brings me to another point. The pity system in DI is fucking Egregious. Every 50 runs. That's it. Now you might think "Okay that means every 50 rifts I do I get a gem right?" Wrong. Every 50 Rifts that you SLOT A LEGENDARY CREST into. It has no bearing on the amount of crests you slot in and you could in theory (and people have. Streamers have done this already) spend 25 dollars a rift for 50 ten crest rifts you can spend 1,250 dollars before you get the RNG to get a single solitary five star gem. These five star gems aren't just something you want, its something that is REQUIRED for PVP content or end game high difficulty PVE content. There are people who've spent money to the tune of 10 grand already without reaching a single five star gem that their build uses and this is not to mention that the gems dropped aren't AUTOMATICALLY 5 star even if they are "5 star" gems because you're dropping "X out of 5 star" meaning even if you get the gem you want you probably need to upgrade it to being 5 star from whatever star it is, requiring you TO GET THE SAME GEM. No. Just fucking no. This isn't just about "Maxing" a character. This is content that is GATED BEHIND this monetization. The Pity system in Genshin Impact is much much more forgiving. I forget the actual numbers but I know for an absolute fact it was not this bad at all. This should NOT be seen as okay because it just isn't okay. This is predatory and DESIGNED specifically around lifting thousands of dollars out of peoples pockets and is one of the worst if not the absolute worst examples of "Free to play" content I have ever seen in my life. This is **WORSE** in **EVERY** **POSSIBLE** **WAY** than any gacha title I've ever seen or played or heard of and it absolutely needs to be PILEDRIVEN into the dirt and publicly shamed by every person who has any self respect and loves the Diablo titles.

well the real truth that nobody likes to hear is that people are trading real life for gaming, so they put all the effort on the game and get obsessive about it. it used to be just a game, people would play a bit for fun then go back to the real world, now its the other way around. and there is money in this, companies are making sure the games hooks more and more, and people are becoming zombies, mostly young men.

Do you think everyone in 1950 read the paper for the news? No. No they did not. Entertainment changes with the ages. This isn't a new phenomenon. People in older generations spent a majority of their time after work watching television, before that they did so with radio. Some of them spent a LOT of their time, even during work hours, listening to ball games on the radio while waiting for customers. How is this any different? People aren't being "Zombified" and "Mostly young men" also just isn't true. The gaming sphere we're talking about here is mobile games which actually have a much much MUCH larger female representation than some other more ensconced genres. I think you're either wildly uninformed on the topic or you're pining after a time period that didn't exist. People have for the most part always worked so they could have things they want. These things are often entirely superfluous and unnecessary for survival. These things are focuses that allow human beings to deal with the real world you love so much. This is no different from any hobby, and its also good to note now that the professional E-sports scene also makes this a viable opportunity to do this as a job. Would you deny a baseball player or a football player the opportunity to compete on the professional level if they were good enough and trained for it? No, I don't think you would. NB4 "Real sports are different." No they aren't. They are perfectly in line with the same rulesets, ludological structure (meaning having the structure of being a "game"), strategic thinking and so forth. No one is being made zombies any more than they were made zombies by the constant influx of television media content that came before it, or the cultivated obsession that people have with a sport they aren't even good at or playing. And this obsession with sports is pushed just as hard if not harder by society and advertisement industry in general. Look at how many television commercials for sports related media are constantly pushed. You think there isn't money in an industry that pays its players exorbitant amounts to the tune sometimes in the hundreds of millions? How do you think that money is made? Out of thin air? No and its certainly not made through event tickets either. Its made predominantly through merchandising which is just as predatory as the monetization in mobile games. Genshin Impact as a game it doesn’t get worse when you invest couple of bucks like 5$ to million$. What happens is, the experience gets worse.
When you drop any kind of money, the game becomes too easy and you start one shotting every mob in the game (except spiral abyss.)
So technically the f2p experience is a lot better. The game remains challenging enough with the limited amount of characters you get from the base game currency.

    • @Yarsig
      @Yarsig 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The F2P experience isn't OBJECTIVELY better though. Mihoyo throws in loads of limitations to get you to feel like you need to pay.
You're stuck with a small roster of characters that lack variety.
You have to be careful with your pulls, and even then, you don't realize how unfun a character may be until hours after playing with them. Pulling for a character that you thought would be fun only to find out later that their playstyle is too one dimensional or boring is libel to make people quit. Especially so when you just used your very valuable primos.
loads of progression is locked behind artificial lengthening, where you login for an hour a day then logout when you've done your "dailies." The game actively doesn't want you playing it at later stages, it seems like.
Genshin is a great game that is completely destroyed by its monetization scheme. (And I'm not advocating for P2P either, seriously, just don't even play Genshin)

I love the rational you use for poorly balanced gameplay. Almost all end game or recent content does expect you to have reached a point where you can keep up, and they've balanced it around paying or getting lucky. Some segments are also clearly made to be played using the new character, as they will have an insane advantage. You gotta be living under a rock to not have heard of all the issues new players face when it comes to the difficulty curve the game takes. If you started early it wasn't noticable but now it almost feels like new players are hitting a brick wall and can never catch up, unless they pay. Especially with their engery system that limits how much you can do in a day.
Free to play games don't have to be pay to win to be awesome, and they should never make players feel that they need to pay to mearly keep up with upcoming content. Want an actually good free to play game? See Path of Exile for that.

If you want to stay at a power level that can one shot everything without having to invest too much then don’t level the world, problem is that also limits to what your characters can really do at higher levels so you basically have to advance everything to the point of every enemy being a bullet sponge to also be allowed to advance your characters. If not, then ActiBlizz is deliberately trying to force two countries to change their laws in favor of predatory business practices.

I own D1, D2, D2:R, and D3. So far I like it, it does what it says on the tin. I think all of the hate comes from the tone deaf reveal they did - something that will take a very very long time for them to shake. The game's good, give it a try. I haven't spent a dime on it but may pay to expand inventory space (PoE does the exact same thing). Yes it may take 100k to max your char without playing, but then what is the point because leveling/grinding _is_ the game.

This actually looks like a lot of fun! I'll give it a try but will *absolutely* not spend anything on micros. At least not until *waaaay* down the line if they rework it after fan backlash like the companies always do. They try a *super* greedy microtransaction model first, so they can "scale back" after backlash to seem like "good guys" to the fans, when the model they "scale back" to usually isn't much better.

I am not joking people have calculated that to max out your character it will cost you around 100 000 dollars.
Yes that's right, not 10 , not 100, not 1000, not 10 000, but 100 000 dollars. This is the most shameless immoral money grab ever seen.
Any one who starts giving them money is stupid and deserve to lose money and also you are helping to finance this shameless practise.

I'm having a lot of fun with it. I guess I'm desensitized to F2P stuff? There's SO MANY mobile games that do this nowadays, some much, much more predatory than others. I've gotten used to it over time-- and since I have a pretty long work schedule, most of the time mobile is the only way I get to scratch my gaming itch. Hopefully the progression won't be hindered by monetization, but even WoW has gotten cash heavy over the past few years, what with WoW Tokens and stuff.

Thanks for the levelheadedness in your video.
Monetization methods aside, Immortal seems like a solid game so far for the scope that the project is aiming for. I don't see myself wanting going too deep into it yet. I am more looking for D4.
Personally, it's more a scaled down D3, for obvious reasons. It is what it is now.
Personally what I missed is the skill rune system. Not the exact thing per se, but the ability to change how your skills work.
The linear upgrade of gems/armor/etc seems boring. I guess I've seen too much of these.
As far as the monetization model, I think the company could do worse. To me, the annoying part of the product is just too much clicking/tapping around the menus. Anyways, take it or leave it.

Everything was on point except for saying that Genshin has a point around the 100 hour mark that forces you to pay to get ahead. That's just not true man. You can totally get 5 star characters and weapons, it's just that you get more chances for them with the battle pass, and seeing how they've had reruns of several characters it's very possible and attainable to get the ones you want. All the actual story content is lightly gated by level restrictions, but spending money doesn't level up your adventure rank faster at all.

I think it's just sad that Blizzard went this way with the Diablo franchise. Cannot be played offline, microtransactions, free to play, etc..
Had they taken the route of a single player game with online features with PvP and co-op much like the recent FromSoftware's Elden Ring they could have easily revived this franchise.

What do you guys that believe this actually think is going to happen to you? How does your social credit score affect you if you don't buy things directly from China?
The answer is... it doesn't, because that doesn't exist in America.
So unless you're planning on going to buy a house in Beijing any time soon... you'll be ok.
Aaand if they did implement this in America, which they probably already do secretly, it wouldn't be done through the Chinese govt. American tech companies would have their own American version of it... and they'd already have all your info from every other piece of technology you use. They would not require Diablo Immortal for this. Ya'll thinking too big and too small at the same time.
