  • Are you having difficulty using your hand after a stroke? If you do then you need to watch this video.
After you have a stroke, it is often difficult to use your arm and hand again. Your first goal is to regain muscle control. Once you regain your muscle control you need to strengthen that arm. Getting your hands stronger might take a little longer because the muscles there are smaller and thinner. But there are exercises and techniques that you can do to Strengthen your hand after a stroke.
First let’s try to mobilize the joints. Let’s start with turning your forearm with your hand facing up and then facing down. Do that 10 times.
Next let’s mobilize your wrist. Hold your stroke hand with your good hand from the base and move it up and down. Then you move your head side to side. Do this 10 times.
Now let’s move the joints in the middle of your hand. Hold your stroke and the middle part. Push down words with your thumb while the rest of your fingers pushes up. Next move your fingers towards the base while your thumb moves towards the knuckles. Push the thumb downwards and again your fingers upwards.
Then let’s mobilize your fingers. Let’s start with your thumb. Hold it at the Finger nail part and move it in circles. Do the same with the rest of the fingers.
Now let’s work on opening and closing of the hand.
To close the hand, let’s start facilitating that movement. I just rub the hand with your good hand 10 times and then try to close it. Do this several times until it makes it easier for you to close that hand. To strengthen the grip just open and close that hand 10 times with arms straight, with your arm rest up, and with your hand to the side. Do each position 10 times.
Opening the hand might be more difficult than closing your hand. Most of the time a stroke hand will curl up and will make a fist. You will notice that opening the hand is more difficult. So when you are able to open your hand, it is also very important to strengthen the muscles that opens that up. So let’s facilitate the opening of that head first. Just rub or swipe uo the entire hand 10 times and then open that hand. Do this for three routes. Now place your hand on the table with the palm facing down. Open your Health and spread your fingers 10 times. You will notice that your hand will get fatigued quickly. That is because the muscles there are small and slender.
Next is to practice opening that han from neutral position. Just put your elbow on the table and then try to open your hand 10 times. Then let’s put your hand back on the table then pick up your thumb off the table then your index finger, the middle finger, ring finger then your little finger. This will not only improve the strength of your hand but also improve your coordination.

I am glad I found this channel, need to sleep, will check back tomorrow. Thanks for choosing to help others. It is good to find someone who knows what strokes are about. In hospital Dec. 30, 2022-Jan 4, 2023. I came home wore out with the hyper-extension. I improved from rgt side gone all the way to foot had dropped and I had to tie a string around my shoe to pull my feet forward in order to walk. I realized by Dec. 29, 2023, I was n stroke mode 2 AM that morning. I climb out the bed using my right side and slide down like a noodle in a child like squat between a chair and the bed. I didn't make it to the bathroom on time, but I was thinking ahead. I put on a pull up before bed just in case. I come to the realization that I had become as one of my former health care patients. As I laid on the floor realizing that I was either in stroke mode or my sciatica, which I now realize could have been PAD all along; It has me pinned and I could not get out of that position. After I prayed and thanked God for strenght, l pulled the rgt leg out and move my left leg so I could rock myself back and forth but cheek side rock to scoot up closer to the dresser while trying to use my left side to pull up on. My phone was know where to be found at this time. I thought I would grab the bottom of the bed frame, but to know avail. Finally, I scooted to the dresser, and one of the draws was opened, and I squeezed my two hands in the drawer, while positioning my left leg for the pull of our life. That was the hardest pull I have ever had. I made it to 5he bathroom at 2:58 AM. I was in need of a shower and I wanted to soak my body. I was slow to get ready that morning, but was on time for work. I wrote this for those who think that you are alone, but you are not. It is February 24, 2023 and I am in recovery mode. I needed must rest before this came, so if you are over working and being under paid; Your job will be hear when you are dead and gone. Take time out to give your soul a break. Thanks 😊🙏

After searching far and wide in TH-cam, I finally found a channel that I think can help me regain my grip strength. I had a stroke just last month and it's trying diligently to recuperate in coordination with my neuro doctors's advice. I am a dedicated long- distance runner before my stroke and a hard-working government employee when the stroke suddenly occurred.and caught me off guard despite my healthy lifestyle. Thank you sir, sincerely. I shall update you on my developments.

      FINDINGS: Endotracheal tube noted insitu.
Blood attenuating hyperdensities [Mean Hu: 70] are noted in the midbrain & pons extending to the left cerebellar hemisphere. Adjacent ill-defined hypodensities noted - likely perihemorrhagic edema. Mass effect noted in the form of mild compression on the 4th ventricle.
A calcified granuloma is noted in the right frontal lobe in the parafalcine region-measuring 7.2 x 6.0 mm (CCxTR).
      Diffuse cerebral edema noted.
Ill-defined symmetrical periventricular hypodensities noted adjacent to frontal horns of bilateral lateral ventricles - likely small vessel ischemic changes.
A subcentimentric anterior falcine lipoma noted. Bilateral vertebral arterial calcifications noted.
The Basal ganglia, internal capsule, thalamus and corpus callosum appear normal.
The Interhemispheric fissure is centered. No midline shift seen. Lateral & third ventricles are of normal size and are symmetrically arranged. Sella and pituitary gland appears normal.

You have helped me so much with after open heart surgery exercises. I have so much pain in the heck. It relief my pain some. The exercises they told me to do were stretching and going above my head . They didn't do nothing. Then again this is Canada so called free health care. Terrible. I had absolutely horrible experience after surgery. Nurses were mean specifically in after surgery trauma care. I cried for two days. I am thankful for you . I appreciate you. God bless you 🙏

If the person can easily move her fingers. I want to type fast again. Thank you for these exercises. I had TIA just last week. My therapist doesn't want to help me out (from the hospital). That's why I'm looking for alternative therapies online for me. I can move my left arm and left leg.

I did everything with my hands after my stroke even though it was difficult, but I had to adjust what I was doing and take breaks often. The key is repetition over the long haul and not to push yourself to hard especially after a traumatic event

I was in therapy for almost 2 years and I was not taught these exercises! Especially the finger lift. I will follow these to improve my chances of typing with my left hand again. Noone has been able to help me and I need to get back to work. The finger lift seems very promising.

I hope it does. The muscles there are so narrow and small. Practice and exercise it but do not over do it. The rest breaks are also very important

I echo everyone when I say thank you for our videos. Do you have advice for someone who doesn't have a strong hand? I had a bilateral pontine stroke. I have movement and sensation in both arms, but they are both weak. (Not strong enough for ADLs but enough in my right to operate the joystick of my wheel chair.) My wife helps with the exercises.
