Lads you missed out on a massive secret feature on the DD-500!! You can get pan delays and circular delay a la Lexicon PCM70 using the pattern delay. Why is this cool? Because those delays are the key to Lukathers 80s and 90s tone (other session players as well) and the DD500 is the only dedicated delay pedal on the market that allows this (otherwise Helix, Quad Cortex and Axe FX) For a circular delay edit the Pattern delay… set time to 888ms; go to “Pattern” parameter and edit it to read “User”; right below “Pattern” is “Delay1 Time” set to “4/12”; set Delay1 Level” to 100; set “Delay1 Pan” to “R100”. Set “Delay2 time” to 4/12; set “Delay2 Level” to 100; set “Delay2 Pan” to “L100”; Set “Delay3 Time” to 16/16; Set “Delay3 level” to 100; Set “Delay3 Pan” to Center. Set the other Delay taps to 0ms…..Add Mod and High cut to taste; play in stereo ET VOILA circular delay. Sounds huge don’t it?
I did something similar long ago when I got the DD-500 and it's one of my most used presets. I think my configuration must be similar to yours, but I will surely try yours. Thanks!
My hat is off to you, gents! That’s a lot of buttons and dials and settings! I’ve had my Collider for two years, and have yet to fully plumb the depths! Keep up the great work! We love y’all! 😊❤️👍
Collider fan here, too. No menus. 7 quick access knobs. Does everything ✅✅. Plus the footprint is surprisingly small. Oh, and it has both delay and reverb and looks super cool!
Love it! Great video, as always! I’ve bought the SDE3000D blindly, as I do the same with 2290P, and I’ve immediately stuck it into a pedalboard that needed a delay…this happened in May, I’m still today trying to came up with something extra cool! 😅 There’s literally THOUSANDS of little feat to face, I absolutely crazily love the SDE!!!
Great show. All of those pedals sound wonderful. Really great summary showing where each pedal excels, and great to see how a multi function delay can achieve a character delay tone, or not. Thanks leg-ends!
I love my DD-500, it does everything I could want it. I’m not convinced the fine details I can hear at home come through at a gig, and the 500 does it all. I’d add too that I loooove the Terra echo sound and I don’t know if I’d be willing to part with it for that algorithm alone.
Same here. You can get two Tera Echos self-oscillating. I had that once on accident and itÄ's a really cool way to play around with the Mod Depth and Tone. On top a good reverb like a Blackhole and I'm in heaven.
One fine point- the preamp of the Roland Space echo was a big part of the sound. You can clearly hear it on the the Waza preamp/booster pedal. It’s a warm 70s solid state boost sound which fattens the signal quite a bit
Mick, the interlude music played during Dan’s menu diving had me in stitches. Bravo! This vid just confirmed my comfort level with my Ibanez AD-9 for that analog short delay softness, Strymon DIG for that 12-bit ’80 dynamic and Keeley Caverns for that modulated tape feel. Great delays and not a menu to be found!! You guys are the absolute best…..
very very cool episode! love the deep dives and BOSS is as good as it gets. thanks guys, loved this one. I'm an analogue delay guy, but that DD-500 really looks special.
Every Friday, when first thing I check for a new TPS episode, I cross my fingers and hope it's an episode on delays. Another excellent episode, great choice of topic.
@@GeoffByrdMusic its great! i have 5-6 delay pedals (strymon, digitech, mxr, TC), and they're all very different. i find that the DD-200 can approximate almost anything except for very esoteric stuff at very specific settings. for the price and quality you cant really beat it
Thanks for these kinds of shows. We also ask these questions but don’t have time, resource or expertise to scratch the itch. It’s why I watch (and subscribe).
Loving the comparison so far as this format really helps to narrow down what would best suit someone looking to buy a new delay. Suggestion for a future delay episode in similar format would be Free the Tone. Without the ability to try them out, I'm struggling to decide between Future Factory, Flight Time and now the Cosmic Wave.
You guys make perfect content... simple as.... every video you make I can think of nothing to add.... you give me exactly what I'm looking for and I could be more grateful but I can't afford to be so I hope a simple thanks will suffice!
I have found using the SDE3000 if you turn off ddl2 (setup. time^. ddl2-setup-off using depth button) then focus on the ddl1 delay (it is stereo L-R delay, you can add offset ms time or dotted 8th etc (left arrow +time to toggle through…has eq and such. At least you can see the relationship between each delay and how to link them together. One complicated piece of gear indeed but sounds great. Study Pete Thorn’s video carefully will help here too. Hope Dan and Mick get this unit mastered and show us some tricks as I know they can. 😊
Great show. My DD-500 is king of my board. Since replacing my Timeline with it I'm extremely happy. Particularly since I am a "delay always on" player. Just less interruption of my actual guitar sound as the Strymon does impart some shizzle on top of ... well .. everything. Probably has been pointed out elsewhere but the "Vintage Digital" has a SDE 3000 model in it. It's the delay engine I use the most although I do not believe it has two separate delay lines. I use it in single mode anyway because ... that's the way I like it. The "Analog" mode has a "stage" parameter when set to "X2" ... that doubles the delay time to 600 ms so there is that to consider. BOSS is just awesome with these delays. I am at some point going to buy a analog delay and it will be the DM 101.
More then 1 hour delay talk. Awesome! I had a Boss DD20 which was great but something was missing. Upgraded to the RE-202 which sounds fantastic but still something was missing. After adding the Disaster Area micro.clock on midi for tap tempo/time setting in milliseconds I got all I ever need. You can also use an expression pedal and assign knob positions on heel down and toe up position which is a great feature! I have the intensity set on the expression pedal. Great job in comparing gents and Boss is still the Boss on delay pedals!
Thanks once again for a wonderful video! I'm glad to see the DD-500 get some love. I bought it pretty much when it first came out (fun story that) and it's probably the last delay I will ever own. It even does a pretty good Big Muff imitation if you set the controls right. FYI, if you check the Stage setting in the menu, you can double or even quadruple the amount of time you get from the analog delay sim in the DD-500. The downside is that it makes the AD sim sound brighter and cleaner.
IMHO Boss is great, the DD200 has been on my gigging board for 4 years & very satisfactorily replaced my Timeline with easy UI, great sounds, small footprint... does it all
it's one of my faves of all time, wild how much you can do (and how good it sounds) with a pedal that you can usually find on reverb for under $200 if you're patient
Amazing video, I think DD-500 is an amazing do it all delay, you cannot go wrong with that. However by this comparisson I got the feeling that there is a "tone" to it that, no matter the setting, it is always there. The cool thing about the other devices in the end they do what they do and it is a lot, but imediately they have a more distinct sound between each other, and between between them and the 500 they sounded more musical. This being said, these are only small differences that for us pedal buffs to discuss.
Boss is not dumb at all! Their strategy is offering two things: First one is the first thing you mentioned, if you own just one of the pedals, or even DD-200, the little brother of DD-500, it will satisfy most of your needs. They are good pedals, top quality. But the second thing is, they all have some features that the other don’t. And those features are usually niche. For instance, you didn’t mention “reverse” in your feature matrix but it is essential for me and only DD series offer it. Anyway, boss designs the features so that if you’re a pedal geek or in need of an all around perfect delay chain (or just rich) you are gonna want to buy the next one too. The thing is, I own DD-200 and RE-202. The two covers everything I need. I keep the RE-202 almost always on during my gigs, I have a mild echo + reverb preset on it and it sounds amazing. I also use it as a send fx on my DJ mixer, cuz it has both delay and reverb at the same time. I love the momentary effects on it. My DD-200 is synced to the backing tracks, I have 4 presets, one of which is reverse and I control the feedback with an expression pedal. It basically covers everything I need from a delay pedal. But for the last couple of days, I’ve been looking into DM-101, that’s probably why I ran into this video as well. I don’t need it, but I just want it! It is beautiful. It sounds phenomenal! I’m planning to start a new project where I’m after a more vintage guitar tone, and DD-200 somehow sounds cheap. Can’t explain what’s missing, but I want that analog beast on my pedalboard. My mind is trying to convince me that I need it. And that my friends, is what Boss is really good at. They design those babies so well that I wanna have’em all.
My main board is a reverb, 3 delays (Orion, DIG, Fable - so technically up to 5 delay lines), chorus/vibe, two dirt pedals (or one and boost), and a tuner on my textual focused board. Albeit, I can use each of those delays for multiple purposes - Orion has always on preamp, 335ms type and runaway stuff, DIG does clean timed cascading, long times, clean delay-verb, a second chorus/faux-flange, Fable does reverse, octave, "granular" and reverb - but does a cool warbly doubled octave, wonky vibe, reverse chorus, tape stop, stacked s&h step filter, granular verb, and wild stuff. To be fair, it also has 2 hidden effects loops underneath that act as patch points that bring in my modular mini fly board - RE-202, HXOne, Tilt OD, and LA-2A. So I guess when I only have one delay it would be the 202!
Good timing mates! I was just thinking about adding a dedicated delay. I have the Boss RV6 and a Behringer multi effect that includes delay. Have to get out the headphones! Cheers!
Great show lads! I got the re-202 after watching your tape delay shootout and space echo episodes a while back. Most fun I've ever had with a delay pedal!
One of the advantages of the DD500 (and any of the 500 series) is you can use as a very basic midi controller for all the midi pedals on your board - if your needs are simple and you just need to set pedals at the start of a song then scroll down the setlist before the next song, DD500 has got you covered. I use it this way even for songs that don't have any delay on them to set-up the overdrive tones on my Boss OD200 and the modulation on my TC Plethora.
I love deep dive pedal and especially delay videos. I’m such a delay aficionado… I had the RE-202 but eventually the UA Galaxy won me over in terms of tones. Thanks again for being such an inspiration!
Currently only got a memory man and a JHS 3 series delay and I feel like I'm in need of something different, just from the intro i feel like tape is what im kooking for! Less than a minute in and my problem is solved, appreciate you Dan and Mick 😂
I LOVE ... Love ... love my Boss DM-101. Idk, maybe could become a future classic, like the Mooger Foogers. The newer smaller box version of the SDE-3000D is a cool idea too though (SDE-3, think?). Mono in / stereo out is the only frustrating thing with the 101. Because it won't play nice with how I used to have the TC SCF+ running mono-in stereo out, into Meris Polymoon. But, maybe Boss just wants to sell me a Dimension DC-2W to place after the DM-101.
I love mine (purchased Dec 2017) - I created killer Tape, Analog and Rhythmic Dub-Reggae Delays. Boss has alway done incredible delay-pedals. An entire toolbox of delay pedals.
I've learned so much from you guys (y'all, you'uns). I just started shopping for my first delay pedal and have been revisiting all of your relevant videos. Now this? You must be effing my reading mind.
As others have said, the computer editor makes setting up patches on the DD-500 much easier, and gets you diving into obscure features, e.g. the assigns that let you automate up to 16 parameters - it's like setting up a mod matrix on a synth! And the user defined pattern delays are incredibly flexible - one trick I like to do is have two patches with different euclidean rhytms, then run them together for weird rhythmic insanity
The DD-500 has a lot you can do with the controls. Hold/Freeze, Twist, Warp - The Tap/Ctl switch can do so much. I stick to only a few pedals in my ambient signal chain (H9, DD-500, Specular Tempus), but the DD-500 is a delay beast. Ironically, the H9 and Specular Tempus have some great delays as well.
So I've already got a Strymon Volante, Meris LVX, and Catalinbread Belle Epoch Deluxe, and after watching this I'm soooo itching for the DM-101 now. Also, it's worth noting that there is the EVH model of the SDE-3000 for a bit more that has a more comprehensive physical I/O section that facilitates a full stereo W/D/W setup like Van Halen used.
So essentially it's DD500 that does it all but that requires learning the user interface vs. other boxes that give you a specific sound only but give a simple(r) access to their functions. What's also cool about 500 series pedal is battery operation; probably not a big deal, but imagine wanting a minimal rig and going with rechargeable batteries, and getting so much delay firepower without plugging into the wall! Thanks to 9v battery rechargeable via USB I could turn a Boss TU2 as a trusty tuner that's lying around always ready to go, wouldn't mind an advanced delay working like this too! (I have Strymon Timeline, btw).
Yeah, not boring. I think even the time spent w/ the menus is helpful for people who are shopping this out. I grew up on rack stuff, so I took to the DD-500 after a few hours. After a year, I was using 3 sounds - and 2 were similar. I sold it and got the Halo when it came out! Anyway, very worthwhile show: the 202 is my favorite in this show!!
I got rid of the DD500 for an SDE3000D specifically because its easier to tweak from the front panel than to dive into the menus on the DD500. I actually got rid of all of my 500 series pedals because of the menu diving.
Menu diving should be a mortal sin, as it's a waste of everyone's time. A guitar player we'd invite over to jam would spend 3 out of 4-5 hours tweaking his AxeFX, let alone T-ing off the vocalist, as the guitarist relied on the her PA to amplify his junk sound. After we told him to leave and never return with that menu diving POS, he returned with an actual amp, and actually played music, instead of knob tweaking.
I got a great deal on the rv500 a few years back. Thought it sounded great but I can’t even spend 20 minutes leaning to use a pedal, so offloaded it for no loss… just snagged an SDE-3000d for half nothing but will try and learn it this time, promise…
@@ordinalkirk very interesting. Is there a decent video anywhere explaining how to use it? I’m close to selling mine cos I just really can’t muster the courage to read the damn manual… I have two DM-2Ws that cover most of the ground I need, but I wouldn’t mind properly trying the SDE-3000 before offloading it…
Mick, if the DD-500 works like the DD-200, tape saturation is (oddly) in the head selection - they start like 1, 2 , 3, but if you keep scrolling, the numbers are followed by periods, 1., 2., 3., and the period means "with tape saturation."
@@corpse-in-orbit bummer, I think that may be a DD-200 addition. I tried on the 500 and it doesn’t let me scroll further. No dot to be seen (sad noises)
As owner of the DD-500, I really enjoied this comparison. I was almost thinking that my dd-500 was becoming obsolete, since BOSS has released other devices. But I have to think again and be happy with mine.
Another terrific overview, thanks for taking the time! In the '70s I was using WEM Copycat and then Roland Space Echo as part of my live rig. I'm currently using TCE Alter Ego, which has some pretty good tape simulations, but I'd love to grab the Boss Space Echo - the 'pre-amp saturation' feature is definitely enticing! Cheers.P.S. FWIW I also run a TCE Flashback Triple Delay after the Alter Ego so I can have a comfortable slap-back or tighter delay up front and then have a longer 'distant' dotted eigth or whatever bouncing around in stereo . . .
Similar to the SDE-3000, the Roland DEP-5 had 12 bit processing and despite the low bitrate - or maybe because of it - it was an awesome multi-effect processor. The delays were incredible, as were the chorus and reverb, and the programmability made it one of the best-sounding, most useful pieces of gear in both my live setup as well as for studio work. Along with the Lexicon PCM60, it was the core of my effects setup. I'm still, after all these years, trying to find delay and verb plugins that sound as good and as transparent... to no avail, thus far.
Recently purchased the SDE-3000D and it is a great pedal and the modulation and width is something special but the menu system indeed is a right pain to navigate!
It’s not boring! These deep dive shows are excellent especially for delay junkies like me! I look forward to this show every week.

@@plectrummx I meant the bi-phase, which is availible on every algorhitm. I set the rate very low so the phase effect isn´t really noticable. Since you don´t have to use the rate control from there on, the mod depth knob works like a spread knob.

I received my t-shirt. Thank you for that. It was beautifully packaged, with lots of attention to detail and love.
Lads you missed out on a massive secret feature on the DD-500!! You can get pan delays and circular delay a la Lexicon PCM70 using the pattern delay. Why is this cool? Because those delays are the key to Lukathers 80s and 90s tone (other session players as well) and the DD500 is the only dedicated delay pedal on the market that allows this (otherwise Helix, Quad Cortex and Axe FX)
For a circular delay edit the Pattern delay… set time to 888ms; go to “Pattern” parameter and edit it to read “User”; right below “Pattern” is “Delay1 Time” set to “4/12”; set Delay1 Level” to 100; set “Delay1 Pan” to “R100”.
Nice. But headache. Ha!

That pattern delay mode is incredibly useful and should not be underestimated.
I did something similar long ago when I got the DD-500 and it's one of my most used presets. I think my configuration must be similar to yours, but I will surely try yours. Thanks!
@@Dethfield It is. The one thing it missed is that I can not tap the pattern as far as I know.
Great to see some DD-500 love! It's an incredible unit and deserves more play all around
Agree. Love mine. Boss has always done incredible delays.
These kinds of episodes are the reason why I subscribed so many years ago! We want you to get nerdy!

I love analog delay so I went with the dm101. It is such a sick sick sick delay. The chorus is subtle but can get wobbly.
Very nice! DD-500 has setting for parallel/series. So you can combine any two delays in parallel mode.
Every Friday, when first thing I check for a new TPS episode, I cross my fingers and hope it's an episode on delays. Another excellent episode, great choice of topic.
Watching this for like the 5th time maybe. It’s like the pedal documentary that never ends.
Omg, I have been trying to decide witch one to buy for a month now and you made this video
So what is the verdict?
DD-200
@@RyanRenteria Interesting choice. Do you like it?
Why decide? Buy all of them!
@@GeoffByrdMusic its great! i have 5-6 delay pedals (strymon, digitech, mxr, TC), and they're all very different. i find that the DD-200 can approximate almost anything except for very esoteric stuff at very specific settings. for the price and quality you cant really beat it
DD500 has been out for years now. The fact that it is still stands up shows they did a great job.
Haha
I was rocking the DD-20 until earlier this year, so I agree, Boss holds up

To be brutally honest!!! If I had to pick one!! I would have to go with the DD500
The new SDE-3 stompbox is very tempting, even though I love the TC Flashback 2 that I’ve been using for years.
It’s really good. We just got one and it’ll be in the upcoming Blues Breaker or Blues Driver video. I’d use it over ANY of the delays here. Mick here.

The summary in the beginning was great! Much appreciated!
Nice to see fellow car enthusiasts in the UK loving a Corvette! Keep the content coming!!
Future Factory and Flight Time should be very simple. FF is a dual delay - two delay lines - and the FT is a single delay.
Cosmic wave, not sure!
You guys make perfect content... simple as.... every video you make I can think of nothing to add.... you give me exactly what I'm looking for and I could be more grateful but I can't afford to be so I hope a simple thanks will suffice!
Thank you kindly!
If you turn off ddl2 then what is the menu sequence to turn on dotted eighth?
This stuff is endlessly fascinating! Please keep this type of stuff coming! And all your other videos too... Can't get enough!
Not boring. Love shows like this.
Always a pleasure to watch, and always sad when it's over. Love this podcast.
I'm still using three DD-20's and a Strymon El Cap...I'm happy!
You friggin deserve at least 1-2-3 mil subscribers! Love your shows!
Thanks mate 🙏
IMHO Boss is great, the DD200 has been on my gigging board for 4 years & very satisfactorily replaced my Timeline with easy UI, great sounds, small footprint... does it all
it's one of my faves of all time, wild how much you can do (and how good it sounds) with a pedal that you can usually find on reverb for under $200 if you're patient
The DD 500 is great, but honestly, I think The DM-101 would be the bomb if it can get into the lo-fi area too. Loved this video, thanks legends!
Not boring. I want MORE Boss content. Not less.
I’ve had many delay pedals, and I held out on the DD-500 for a long time. Once I tried it, I made the switch and haven’t looked back. So versatile.
Boss is not dumb at all! Their strategy is offering two things:
First one is the first thing you mentioned, if you own just one of the pedals, or even DD-200, the little brother of DD-500, it will satisfy most of your needs.
Cheers!
Space Echo 202 or the 101 Analog are both stellar. I don't have either one yet, but I've played both extensively and they are fantastic.
I'm afraid the answer is 'Both' 😊
@@jonpardoe I'm afraid you are correct sir.
14:05 lift off😍👽🚀 awesome playing Dan!
I have DD-200 and it's amazing, I will definitely go for DM 101 in the future.

The DD-500 is a magic bullet for ny looping rig, I may not have looked at it, if not for trusting you guys.
Currently only got a memory man and a JHS 3 series delay and I feel like I'm in need of something different, just from the intro i feel like tape is what im kooking for! Less than a minute in and my problem is solved, appreciate you Dan and Mick 😂
I've got the RV-500, DD-200, RE-2, DM-2w, plus 2 or 3 of the compact digital delays and I still want ALL of these!
I will pray for you. 😂
Brilliant show, guys. We are out traveling and visiting dear friends. So nice to take TPS on the road! Love you all. -G
I LOVE ... Love ... love my Boss DM-101.
@50:44 - dd500 analog delay time can be increased by increasing the number of chips in the menu - think it can go up to 1200ms
I think I've had my DD-500 for 10 years and it is still wonderful! Great UI and Computer Editor, great sounds
Same here. Bottomless.
I love mine (purchased Dec 2017) - I created killer Tape, Analog and Rhythmic Dub-Reggae Delays. Boss has alway done incredible delay-pedals. An entire toolbox of delay pedals.
I've enjoyed all the amp related content lately but I reaaaaaally enjoyed you guys deep diving into some pedals again
Geesh! Some epic playing on this episode, too! Love it!
Another feather in the DD-500’s cap is that it can be acquired for less than 300 quid these days
Dan! You are looking Great you fine Gentleman! Greetings from Texas. I’ve been watching for SEVERAL years! Keep it Up
Hey @johnD-Hart , greeting in Texas, from Texas.
Weren’t the first few shows on Dan’s GigRig channel?
Ah, cheers mate 🙏
Thanks guys. The display on the SDE3K always makes me think of a doomsday clock!
Omg… I have an RE-202 arriving today. What a coincidence!
are you in Canada?
Yeah, not boring. I think even the time spent w/ the menus is helpful for people who are shopping this out. I grew up on rack stuff, so I took to the DD-500 after a few hours. After a year, I was using 3 sounds - and 2 were similar. I sold it and got the Halo when it came out! Anyway, very worthwhile show: the 202 is my favorite in this show!!
This is so good! Would love to see this with the boss compact delays as well!
I’ve been able to get close to the sounds of my old Chandler Digital Echo out of the SDE-3000. Amazing. Nice show.
I love seeing what they all do. I know I will NEVER part with my RE-202. It adds all sorts of color when I need it.
42:49 The 80's 12-bit thing that I really DIG. Da-ga-dish! 😅
Great recap at the beginning! But always worth the deep dive!
Yes. SDE 3000 is much easier to use than the DD500. My DD500 sits in a drawer and the SDE 3000 is likely on my board forever.
@@ordinalkirk very interesting. Is there a decent video anywhere explaining how to use it? I’m close to selling mine cos I just really can’t muster the courage to read the damn manual…
I have two DM-2Ws that cover most of the ground I need, but I wouldn’t mind properly trying the SDE-3000 before offloading it…
@@CradleRawk The Pete Thorn video is a good starter. Then look up one called "Vintage Digital Delay...TWICE!! Boss SDE-3000D Dual Digital Delay"
Mick, if the DD-500 works like the DD-200, tape saturation is (oddly) in the head selection - they start like 1, 2 , 3, but if you keep scrolling, the numbers are followed by periods, 1., 2., 3., and the period means "with tape saturation."
For real??? Is this in the space echo mode? I haven’t seen this. I’ll have to give it a try
@@plectrummx On the DD-200, yeah, it's in Tape and Drum modes, and I would guess the DD-500 works that way too
@@corpse-in-orbit bummer, I think that may be a DD-200 addition.
Cheers.P.S. FWIW I also run a TCE Flashback Triple Delay after the Alter Ego so I can have a comfortable slap-back or tighter delay up front and then have a longer 'distant' dotted eigth or whatever bouncing around in stereo . . .
Great intro guys - after that I just had to watch the whole video to understand how you came to these conclusions 😁
yeah! dirt and fuzz are cool, but delay are modulation are my personal faves!
Pedal board real estate: please do a BOSS small pedal delay…and include the new SDE 3!
I enjoy the pedal deep dives. The DD500 is a great pedal, but I’ve “down sized” to the DD200 for simplicity and size.
Value added episode. Thank you dudes.
